ATaleofTwoExpos1986wastheyearthattheWorld’sFaircametoVancouver.Atthattime,thecitywasstrugglingwitharecessionandhighunemployment,itwasuncertainwhetheritcouldgrowandbecomealarger,morecosmopolitancity.30yearslaterVancouverisavibrant,dynamiccity,onethatthewholeworldwantstobothvisitandownapieceof.In2016,thelegacyofExpo86seemstobreakdownintotwocamps:thosethatfeelitmessedupthecity,turningitintoalargeresortcommunity,whererealestateistheprimaryindustry;andthosethatparticipatedintheFair,asvisitors,workers,musiciansorentertainers,andforwhomExpo86isaseminalexperienceintheirlives.ThesetwolegaciessuggestthatahistoryofaneventsuchasaWorld’sFairwillalwaysbederivedfrompersonalexperiences,andtheseexperiencescanvarywidelyintheirmeaningandmanifestations.Therewere,andcontinuetobe,widerangingimpactstotheCitycausedbytheplanningandconstructionofExpo,aswell social andeconomicproblemscreatedby thepoliticalpowers that implemented theFairandcreatedthestrategiesforforeigninvestment.Thisexhibitionisnotabouttheseissues.ItisaboutthepersonalhistoriesofthosethatexperiencedExpo86.Itisaboutmemory.Itisaboutstyle.Itisaboutfamiliesonadayout.Itisaboutthosethatparticipatedinwelcomingtheworldtoourplace,andwhohadadamngoodtimedoingit.Itisabouthowwegrowandchangeasindividualsandourdesiretoembrace(orreject)ourpastselves.Itisalsoabouthowwerememberandhowweaccessthosememories.Weforget–andthoseunder20haveneverknown–atimebeforeFacebookandInstagram,whereeveryminuteofone’slifewasn’tdocumentedandstored.1986wasapre-digitalageforphotographyandmostoftheworksintheshowhavebeensourcedfrombasements,attics,storagelockers,anddustycupboards.Itwasn’teasytoaccesstheseimages,eitherbythecuratorsorthosewhotookthepictures.Itoftenfeltlikeanarcheologicalexcavationratherthananartshow.AlthoughmanypeoplerememberExpo86,andoftenhavegoodstoriestotell,thephotodocumentationwasoftendifficulttocomeby,andpeoplehadtobeproddedandcajoledtodigouttheprints,slidesandnegatives.ThisistrulyAnUnofficialHistoryinthatwehavefocusedonquirky,personalimages,totheexclusionofanyattempttodocumenttheOfficialProgramoftheFair,orpresentselectionsfromthemyriadofsouvenirsandephemerageneratedby theevent. Due tocuratorialandpractical reasons,weareonlypresentinga smallselectionofimagescomparedtothetotalnumberofphotosthatwereundoubtedlytaken,butinmanywaystheyrepresentacommonalityofexperienceduringthatlongsummerin1986whenweandourCitycameofage.ChrisKeatley,CuratorPendulumGallery
WorkingonthesetofRainbowWar,1985Text:SaffronHenderson/Image:BobRogersYouknowhowtherearesomemomentsinlifethatyouknowaresospecialthatyoushouldsavourtheminyourmindforever?Well,backin1985,whenwefilmedRainbowWarforExpo86,therewerenocameraphones,noeasydigitalsnapshots,noFacebookorTwitterorInstagramfeeds.Justmy16-year-oldmind,andthesesweetstillsthatweretaken.WhenIauditionedforthepartofthe'RedPrincess',IunderstoodverylittleexceptthatBobRogers,directorandproducer,waslookingforayoungactresswhowascoordinatedandcomfortablewithlotsofmovement.RainbowWarwouldbecompletelywithoutdialogueandcharactersandrelyheavilyonphysicalexpression,choreography,costumes,amazingmusicandelaboratesets/specialeffects.Asadancer,itsoundedlikefuntome!Iknewitwasanimportantopportunity.TheExpo86themeofCommunicationandTransportationwouldbeverywellillustratedbythisproject.IrememberbeingsoexcitedbythecallbackauditionthatIwenthomefromitandpromptlyputthetoasterinthefreezer.Likeyoudo,whenyoucanfeelthatsomethingwonderfulmighthappen.
Idon’trecallhowlongwefilmedfor,Ijustremembermissingalotofschool.IlovedbeingonasetatPanoramainNorth
Vancouvereverydaywithanamazingcastandcrew.IfeltlikeaveryspecialguestinBobRogers'magicaluniverse.This
universeincludedsomeotherverytalentedguests,manyactorsthathavesinceappearedinmultipleotherTVandfilm
productions.Everyonefromthecostumedesignerandcoreextrastothecateringstaff,andtheproductioncrew,were
kind,creativeandsupportive.Bobkneweverydrawing,everytrick,everyshotandsplashofcolouraheadoftime.Hehad
agreatsenseofhumour.Watchinghimorchestratethisprojectwaslikewatchingabigkidinacandystore-havingthe
timeofhislife.Wegottobeapartofapre-CGIfairytale.Imaginehowdifferentlythismightbeshottoday!
Igottohangoffabridge(whichwasreallyjustapieceofsomethinghangingoverabigpadformetofallon).Iwasproud
tofeellikeastuntmanforaminute!Thehairdesignerstreakedmyhairwithcolourfulpaintandmadeitstandonendso
thatwhenI'fell',myhairlookedasifitweretrailingaboveme.IevengottoheadtoLAforfilmingpartofthemovie,I
waspickedupinalimoatLAX.Howexciting!
Sixteenyearsold,sittinginthebackofastretch.IstayedattheBeverlyHilton,whereIdiscoveredthatahamburgerand
acokecouldcosttwenty-fourdollars!
I'llneverforgetBobsayingtome,"Youknowwhat?Nomatterwhatyoudoinyourcareer,Idon'tthinkthislittleproject
willeverfalloffyourresumé."Hewasright,sincethen,I'vesunganddancedaroundtheworld.I’vebeenapartofmany
otherfilmandTVprojectsandsangonpeople'salbumsinthestudio,buttheonlyprojectI'veeverbeenapartofthatwas
nominatedforanOscarwasRainbowWar.ItwasalsotheonlyprojectthatI'vebeenstoppedinthe(Vancouver,mind
you)streettodiscuss?Youguessedit!RainbowWar!Peacethroughpaint!

A10-metrewidepedestriancirculationrouteextendedthroughouttheentiresite,alongwithanelevatedpeoplemover
(train)incorporatedintothemiddleofthemainthoroughfare.Aseawallalongtheentirewaterfrontofthesiteallowed
accesstothewater’sedgeandcirculationalongitsperimeter.TheSiteDevelopmentTeamworkedinunisontocolour
renderthelargescaleillustrativesiteplanwhichwasinitiallypreparedbyhandwithtechnicalpensandCADdrawings.
Threegenerations,BirthTimeTravelingandErnieDevinPihlainen,CarolPihlainen&WalterTerentiukMysonDevinwasbornwhilemyfatherwasvisitingExpo86.My father foundout thegoodnewsaftermidnightOttawatime,about11pmVancouvertime.Technicallyhelearnedofhisgrandson'sbirthonSeptember20,eventhough he was actually born September 21. I was hired by a friend as amascotescort,themostbizarreemploymentI’vehad.JerrywasplayedbyAlexDiakun,who went on to better, andmuchmorechallengingroles.
RememberingExpo86ThroughaSouvenirImage&text:JillianGloverIfyouwereakidinthe80sgrowingupinVancouver(likeme),Expo86isprobablyoneofyourfirstmemories.Allof your family from Ontario or rural BC or wherever,cameouttostaywithyou.Youwenttothefairgroundsregularly and got your passport stamped at all thepavilions.YourodetheSkytrain,huggedExpoErnie,andwatched Rainbow War. As I grew up, I watchedVancouver grow up too. The city became moreinternational,sophisticatedandcosmopolitanafterExpo86.Ifeelfortunatetobepartofwhatisnowconsideredits"comingout"party.Sadly,Ineverkeptmysouvenirs.Butseveral years ago I was on a trip withmy husband toPrinceEdwardIslandandwasluckytofindthisExpoErniecoinjaratanantiqueshopinanold,convertedchurch.He has since returned with me to his hometown ofVancouver.Now Iwill sharehimwithmy two-yearoldson, who never got to experience this moment in hiscity'shistory.
SummerSantaClaus:RubyPartridgeText:PeterPartridge/Image:PattiRickettsThisisRubyPartridge,whoattheageof67,spentmorethan100daysatExpo86playingSummerSantaClaus.Wefoundoutaboutitmuchlater.MomwouldgetupearlyinthemorningtouseherseniorsbuspassandExposeasonpasstospendthedayatthefair,enjoyingthesightsandtheeventsalltoherself-orsowethought.OnlyinthelastfewdaysdidwefindoutwhatMomhadbeendoingthereintheselittleexcursions.ShewouldarriveearlyontheExpositeandlineupfortimedadmissionticketstothemostpopularshows.Armedwithseveralsoughtaftertickets,MomwouldthenspendhourspatrollingtheExpogrounds,andespeciallythelongpavilionlineslookingforoutoftowntourists,preferablyelderlypeopleuncomfortableinlongqueuesorhaggardcoupleswithanarmfulofkids.OnceMomspiedalikelygroupshewouldaskifthey'dseenthemorepopularshowsonthesite.Usuallytheanswerwas"no".Oftenduetolongline-ups,outsidersweren'tawareuntiltoolatethattherewereadvancetimedticketstolineupfor.WhenMomfoundthe"right"people,shewouldwelcomethemtoVancouverandExpoonbehalfofallofusinBC,andhandovertherequiredamountofticketsforashowtheymayotherwisemiss.Withoutexceptionhergesturewasaninstanthitwiththevisitors,andshe’dmakenewfriends.Shewouldalwaysdeclineanycreditforherself.Shelikedtotellfolksthateveryonewholivedherewasouttoensurethateveryonehadagoodtime-thateveryoneinBCwasahostfortheFair.Momkeptall this toherselfuntil Expohadonlya fewdays left.Her sadnesspromptedour curiosity,and twoofhergranddaughters,mydaughters,accompaniedhertotheFair.That'showwefoundout"Nana"wasgoingtomissplayingSummerSantaonbehalfofusall.
Something'sHappenedHere
Eachmemorythatwehaveisbothamutationandaconvergence.Memory,isitsowneventhorizon:apointofnoreturn,beyondwhicheventscannotaffectanoutsideobserver.Thelatterhalfofthedefinitionmakessense,noonecanconjureyourmemories,theyarespecifictoyoualone.Itisoftensaidthatyoucan'trelivethepast,anobviousstatementinthephysicalandtemporalsense.Butnow,wealsoknowthateveninyourmemories,youliterallycan'treliveanything.Yourmindisconstantlyrecalibratingthefarpast;infact,allofthepastisonlyeverarecordofamoreimmediaterecollectionofitself.Similartoagameoftelephone,whenweenvisionanoldmemory,weareneverrecallingaspecificisolatedexperience,wearerecallingthe,mostrecent,previousmemoryofthatexperience...whichwasactuallyamemoryofthepreviouslyrecalledversionbeforethat,andsoon,andsoforth. Intertwinedwithpastexperience,overlainwithexistingknowledge,informedbythehumdrumofourcurrentbodily circumstance, and connected to the vibrations of our present mental state, each memory is neverrememberedthesamewaytwice. Withthisinmind,wheredoesonebegintotellthecollectivestoryofaneventthatisthirtyyearspast?Expo86spannedover70hectaresand164days,ithadover22millionvisitors.Apartfromthe2010Olympics,thiseventislikelyBritishColumbia’sandVancouver'slargestcollectivelyrememberedeventinhistory.TherearetheknownfactsonExpo86thatcanbefoundonWikipediaandviaseveralotherofficialinformationchannels.ButtherearealsothemillionsofmemoriesthatwerecreatedoverthecourseoftheFair'ssixmonthrun.Onecan'tevenbegintoimaginethemutationsandconvergencesofthesestoriesoverthepastthirtyyears. Itwasasurprisinglylaborioustaskgathering,scanningandprintingimagesforthisexhibition,over200photoswerereviewedfrom80differentsources.Describingthecuratorialmethodologyandpreparationfortheshowisanevenmorearduoustask.Itwasastrangeprocess,oftenguidedheavilybyintuition.Asan'unofficialhistory',perhapstheprocessandexplanationarelessinterestingthanthefinalresult.Officially,whatshouldbeknown,isthatthisexhibitionrepresentsanunconventionalsetofinterpretationsofExpo86. Visitorsareinvitedtowadetheirwaythroughthepastelshort-shortsandkneehighsocks.Thebrightprimarycoloured, Lego-like architecturewill serve as a visual harbinger, activating personalmemories.
