    INTRODUCTION

This report talks about the locations of urban projects by discussing what

should be where and what should be its surrounding. By taking an example

of a case of 4.5ha land owned by Punjab government in the center of an

industrial town we can clearly understand the importance of selecting sites

    for the urban development projects.

The site was vacant till 2008. In 2009 the local municipal corporation

planned to develop the site as recreational area a (public park). In late 2009

one minister announced a new degree college of arts and science in the

town. Later on the same site selected for the construction of the new

    college.

    OBJECTIVES

This is how two proposals came up for the same land. The report firstly talks

about the town and the importance of the site for the town. Then it

discusses about the necessity of both the proposals for that town and about

the merits and demerits of these proposals for the selected site by

considering the various aspects of urban planning.

The case is further supports by the case studies of two cities Chandigarh

(planned by le Corbusier) and Amritsar (unplanned) by selecting one

educational institute and one recreational area in each city.

    HISTORY

In earlier 19th century the whole Punjab was ruled by Maharaja Ranjeet

Singh. He captured Kasoor region of Punjab in 1801 by defeating Navab

Nijam-ul-din. He gave Mamtdhot reasat (a small part of Kasoor region) to

    Navab Nijam-ul-din to survive.

In Mamtdhot Reasat the the Royal Palaces were there in Mamtdhot city

which was at one end of the Reasat. So there was difficulty in administration

of whole Reasat from Mamthot city.

In 1863 Jalal-ul-din became Nawab of Mamtdhot Reasat. He selected a large

part of land in the centre of the Reasat for his capital city (Jalal-abad) to run

    his administration easily.

From 1874-1930 slow construction of Market, Residences, Govt.offices,

    Railway station were done.

    ARCHITECTURE AND PLANNING

From 1930 onwards further development of Jalalabad(W) was done

according to the Master Plan prepared by an English Architect from Lahore.

He developed the open land present in between the royal palaces and other

the residential areas. The planning was done in grid iron pattern consisting

of two inter mediate commercial lanes, residential areas, large area for the

market of agriculture products and other buildings. The reason for giving

such a large area for the agriculture products is to attract the farmers to

come to the capital area. It works very efficiently and a large market of

    agriculture products was developed.

The agriculture product market promoted the industrial development in

Jalalabad(w). This industrial development started after the division of India

in 1947. The industrial area mainly consisted rice milling industries. Initially

these industries established in the main market lanes. This industrialdevelopment promoted residential and commercial development. Manyother developments were there like educational (schools), public transport

(bus stand), storage (FCI), vegetable market etc.

population is 38400. Today there is no planning or development pattern in

Jalalabad (w). The town has into two parts

    Industrial area.

    CHAPTER 2 TWO PROPOSALS

It is required to discuss that why there is two proposal for the project. The

detail analysis of both the proposals gives the waightage of these proposals

for the town. This chaper shows the need of both the proposals for that land.

NEED OF RECREATIONAL AREA (1ST PROPOSAL)

There is lack of recreational area in the town. There is only one park in thetown situated southern side of the town. The land in the centre of the town

can easily fullfill the lacking of such areas. So site of this case is very much

appropriate for such kind of development.

NEED OF THE COLLEGE (2ND PROPOSAL)

There is only one private college in the town and the student strength is

arround 500 to 600 in numbers. The fee structure of the institute is not

affordable for the low income group. This condition of education facility

makes many students to travel to nearby government colleges. The nearest

college is situated in Fazilka city which is 33km away from the town. From

Jalalabad (w) there are Nearly 300 students in government college of

    Fazilka.

Above paragraph explains that there should be one government college in

the Jalalabad (w) block. As Jalalabad town is an industrial centre and it is

well connected to the surronding villages and settlements the site of the

college should be very near to the town.

    CHAPER 4 - CASE STUDIES

Chandigarhwas planned by le corbusier as the new capital of punjabstate.

There is the case study of Punjab university as an educational institute. As

from the plan we can see that the University is there at the northern end of

the city. The city expands in south west (mohali) and south east (panchkula)

direction. There is no further expantion of city in northern direction. There

are many other educational institutes arround it.

Case study of rose garden is there as a recreational area. This garden is

there near the commercial centre of the city. There is all planned

    development arround these case studies.

Amritsaris the political capital of punjab state.

There is the case study of khalsa college as an educational institute and

maharaja ranjit singh garden as a recreational area. Khalsa college was

established in 1902 and maharaja ranjit singh garden was established in

    1818.

There was no development arround these areas at the time of their

establishment. But today there is dense development arround both areas.

These developments are there according to the time and need. So the

surrounding areas of these areas come up unplanned.
