Linking home and school.
Parent’s Meetings: Meeting for
parents of children in Rang 6, Junior Infants
or new children to the school, and meeting
for parents in mixed classes, job-sharing clas-
ses will be held at the end of September/
beginning of October. Ample notice will be
given of these dates.
The AGM of the Parent’s Association will
be held on Thursday October 4th at
8.00p.m. This year a new committee will be
elected and it is vital that parents attend and
get involved in Scoil na mBuachaillí. The
work is not very onerous but is extremely
beneficial to your child. It is also very enjoy-
able.
Music - enrolling for this school year i.e.
Kay O’Flynn (guitar, tin whistle, keyboard
etc), Laurie Hedger (drums) and Ger Condon
(brass instruments): see back page.

Welcome back to all pupils, parents and staff of Scoil na mBuachaillí. We hope
that you all enjoyed the summer break.
A special welcome to our new pupils in Junior Infants and the new pupils who
are entering other classes throughout the school. A welcome also to our new
members of our teaching staff (see page 3).
A special thank you to the SNAs, Thelma and Finbarr for helping out with the
preparation of the school. Thank you to the Parents’ Association for the provi-
sion of refreshments for new parents on their first day.
All Links will be stored on the school website in pdf format - which means you
can download a colour copy any time you wish. Please note: there is also an
Archive section - since June 2003.
Links by email: The Links you receive by email is the colour version and it
helps us cut down on photocopying too. Please consider this initiative. Please
email [email protected] if you are interested.
As you know we have assembly each morning - announcing the various activi-
ties for the day, birthdays, extra curricular activities etc. We would appreciate it
very much if parents would follow the procedures below:
Parents are welcome to wait by the Green gate until the first whistle blows.
After that we ask that you leave so that the boys may be lined up without dis-
traction. It would help us if you would go into the car park area, away from the
lines.
Junior Infants will not join the line for a week or so. When they do - please
drop them off in the main yard and remind them not to leave the yard without
asking a teacher permission.
Many thanks for your help in this matter.
Many thanks to everyone
who supported our fund-
raising Blitz again this
June.
A special thanks to Ms.
Orla O’Keeffe (organiser) and all the staff of the school for their help.
It was a great success and raised €3489.91 for equipment for
the school.

Selection of photos from 6th Class’s
last day at school. Many thanks to
staff members and the Parent’s Asso-
ciation for helping out on the day.
Thank you to Eileen O’Donovan, for covering all
the Rental Scheme and Literacy Lift Off Books during
the summer.
Thanks to Alve Bevan, Susan McCarthy, Mairead
Coombes, Mim Hill, Josie Files, Tina Aherne and Fionnuala Hodnett who prepared the classrooms and Rental Scheme for the coming
year.
Thank you to Finbar O’Connor and Thelma Barry who worked tirelessly over the summer holidays on numerous projects.
Thank you to the SNA Staff who helped to prepare the school for the new year.
Thank you to Eileen O’Regan for the work she does throughout the school year and the summer holidays as Treasurer of the Board
of Management. It is an extremely demanding job and this very hard work and commitment is very much appreciated. Thank you to
Noreen Minihan and all members of the BOM for their continued support.
Thank to John Lowney for sponsoring the medals for the school Chess Competitions. Thanks to Collins Brooks for sponsoring the
medals for the summer football competition.
Thank you to the Parents’ Association for sponsoring the Billy Calnan Music Award and the Basketball Competitions. Thanks to
Galvin’s Bus Company for sponsoring the Orienteering Award.
Thanks to Aiden O’Donovan and all the staff at Construction and Design Studio for their help and for donating a perpetual
plaque for next years’ Prizegiving. We wish them well in Atlanta!
Although the gate is open before 9.00 am, this is done solely to
avoid having the children in danger near the main road.
Supervision in the school yard begins at 9.00 am.
Classes commence each day at 9.10 am sharp.
Classes end each day at- 2.00 pm [Junior and Senior
Infants] | 3.00 pm [1st- 6th]
Parents who wish to have their children escorted home should
make their own arrangements to have them met at the school.
To meet insurance requirements, no pupil is allowed to remain on
in school or school premises after 3.00 pm, unless supervised by a
teacher or for extra-curricular activities. Because of this we ask
that all pupils are collected promptly after school. If you are de-
layed for any reason please contact the school so that alternative
arrangements can be made.
PLEASE DO NOT ASK YOUR CHILD TO WAIT IN
CLONAKILTY PLAYGROUND.
In the case of children travelling by school bus, the school cannot
accept responsibility for escorting them from the bus to the school,
or from the school to the bus. Parents who feel that their children
need to be escorted on these occasions should make their own
arrangements to ensure that some escort is provided. The school
bus collects the children just outside the school gate. Children are
asked to wait just inside the gate until the bus comes.
It is important that children behave on the bus at all times.

If you would like to book an ad for the coming school year 2012-2013 please let Thelma know as soon as possible. The number of ads is limited. Our Links goes to all parents in the school - 10 times a year - at the beginning of each month. The cost is €20 per issue or at a discount of €150 for the entire year! Please ring Thelma 8834487 if you are interested.
Mobile Phones are not permitted in the school; parents may at
any time use the school phone (023-8834487) to contact chil-
dren. If children have to bring the phones to school - the
phones must be handed into the secretary’s office on arrival
and collected at 3.00p.m. The phone will confiscated for a
week if found in the child’s possession in the school.
Ear rings, rings, necklaces or jewellery of any kind (except
watches) are not permitted.
The school uniform is as before - grey trousers, grey shirt, tie
(which has to be worn) and navy jumper. The school track-
suit must be worn for games’ days i.e. P.E. days, Soccer days,
Orienteering and extra-curricular sporting days. All other
tracksuits are not permitted.
A plain navy polo shirt (available in all drapery shops in
Clonakilty) must be worn with the tracksuit. There is no logo
on this polo shirt. Tee-shirts etc are not permitted.
Please note: As last year the O’Rahilly Street rear entrance
will be locked during the school day for security reasons. The
main entrance can be accessed from the playground or by
walking up the right hand side of the building (from O’Rahilly
Street).
We also have a “buzzing in” system - for the safety of the
children. This means that parents must ensure that the doors
are always locked when they leave! This is VITAL!
For safety reasons the school car park is for staff only.
Please do not walk your child through this car park, it is
extremely dangerous. Many of the staff reverse out of their
spaces and may not see a small child crossing this area. You
can walk from the playground through the main yard to the
school. The staff car park was built to hold 12 cars. There are
now over 30 staff in the school - not counting part-time staff!

ing for this starts on Friday 14th of September and will continue until May 2013. Last year it cost €50 in total for the
two days. It is compulsory for the boys to save for Kayaking and not ask their parents for all the money the day
before Kayaking starts. €1 or €2 a week will ensure that the fee is paid for in advance. Please note: this year,
Kayaking is the fifth class School Tour. There is no other tour.
Surfing: for boys in Rang 6 only. Price not agreed as yet but saving for this starts on Friday 14th of September and will
continue until April / May 2013. Last year it cost €80 for 4 days. It is compulsory for the boys to save for Surfing
and not ask their parents for all the money the day before Surfing starts. €2 a week will ensure that the fee is paid
for in advance. Please note: this year, Surfing is the sixth class School Tour. There is no other tour.

wish. The envelope will be handed directly to the GAA Club. This is not a school charge.
Please send in all money by Friday 14th of September.
YELLOW FORM
Each child has been given a yellow form today to aid parents - this MUST be returned with all monies. Please remember to fill
in the child’s name on the form, tick each item you have paid for and sign. This form will be retained in the office for the en-
tire year.
PLEASE NOTE:
This year as in previous years, each child in the family must have his own money (except in the case of twins, who are in the
same classroom) to give to his class teacher. We will not be in a position to accept any family cheques / amounts due to time
constraints - this means if you have different children in different rooms EACH CHILD will have to have his own form and
money. Many many thanks for your cooperation in this matter. Please note: If you are worried about the cost of books, milk,
etc please do not hesitate to contact the school to speak with Mr. Harrington to discuss your concerns.
Parents please remember to sign all school notes – they will
be in your child’s bag. Once you have it signed please return
it to the school the following day – it is the only way we
know that you have seen the note.
You will know that you have to sign the note if it asks for a
parent’s signature. The Links does not have to be signed, as all parents know
when it is being sent out. Please see your Calendar for this
timetable.

tember, for all classes except Junior Infants. Stamps cost €1 each.

Rental Scheme – This is the seventeenth year of the
Book Rental Scheme. It continues to be very success-
ful with more than 99% of the pupils in the school
involved.
The price of books has increased over the past few
years, so it is very important to take very good care of
the books you rent. These books will be needed
again next year. We have spent more than €5000
on books and covering books this summer. Parents
should check up on these books regularly. Any book
that is lost or damaged will have to be replaced by the
child. Our new covers must not be used for storing
pages etc. Please watch this.
Please note: If your child receives a book that
you consider is in poor condition, please return it
to the school and it will be replaced. Please
note that any books that are damaged or lost will
have to be replaced. The Rental Scheme cannot
afford to pay for these books a second time. It is
vital that books are looked after so that we can
keep costs down.
A number of Literacy Lift Off books have gone
missing. Please always return these books on
time. Unfortunately books for this scheme can-
not be bought singly and one would have to pur-
chase a Level in order to get one book - this
could cost €100s. Please look after the books
your child has been given. It is in your best
interest to do so.
Swimming this year starts on Friday the 14th of September. We are hoping that to keep the price of
the sessions as last year’s price - €44. We are collecting the deposit now from all classes - Rang 1 - Rang 6
and if you wish you may pay the full amount.

First Holy Communion (second class) and Confir-

were baptised outside of the parish of Clonakilty will
have to send in a copy of their Baptismal Certificate
(unless you have already done so). Please send in
these certificates as soon as you can. Children in oth-
er classes who have not sent in their Baptismal Certif-
icate can do so at any time – it will be photocopied
and the original returned immediately. For children
in Junior Infants it is the ideal opportunity to locate
and send in your Baptismal Certificate – we won’t
have to ask for it ever again.

The following work was completed during the summer: * New floor cov-
ering in Rang 1 and this room was painted by Finbarr. Rang 5/6 was also
painted.
New floor covering in Senior Infants and new floor covering in Rang 4. All classrooms in the
school no longer have carpets on their floors which should prove to be much healthier and
cleaner! We are still looking for old tennis balls to put under the chairs and desks in the class-
rooms (to reduce noise levels). Please give to Thelma. Click here

As you know children cannot leave the school yard at lunchtime
without one of the following:-
(a) The Lunch Time Indemnity Form – (filled in at the beginning
of each school year).
(b) A note from a parent/guardian or collected by a parent/
guardian.
If you wish your son to go home at Lunch Time this year, please
ask for an Indemnity Form.
Please note: Permission will never be given for children to go to
the shop – even with a note.
Please note: Permission will never be granted for a child to leave
the school during the school day without -
A note from his parent/guardian. An appointment card
from a doctor/dentist etc will not suffice.
Or
If he is collected by his parent/guardian.
If your son is being collected during the school day by a friend or
relative please send in a note/email to cover this.
IMPORTANT All children must be collected from the classroom if they are
collected during the school day.
Listed below are the times that children will be doing P.E. or Soc-
cer. On these days children can wear their school tracksuit only.

Kay O’Flynn is enrolling children (from Senior Infants
to sixth class) for guitar, tin whistle, keyboard, accordion
on Thursday next 6th of September between 1.30p.m.
and 3.00p.m.
Brass Instruments - are for boys in Rang 4, Rang 5 and
Rang 6 only - enrolling now - last day 7th of September.
Drum Lessons - for boys in Rang 3, Rang 4, Rang 5 and
Rang 6 - last day 15th of September.
This year boys will only be able to do two of the above - as
they all occur during the school day - this is to minimize dis-
ruption in the classrooms.
This year, as every year, I urge parents to ensure that your child
attends school every day, unless he is too ill. Without realising it,
these days and others add up over the year and over the child’s
school life.
These absences do impact on your child’s education.
If you are thinking of booking holidays this year, first look at the
school calendar and then try to avoid school days.
This year, as last year, I am writing to all parents whose children
have been absent for 20 days or more this past year, so that you are
informed about this matter.
As you may know, we are obliged under the Education Act to
notify the National Welfare Board when a child is absent from
school for 20 days in a school year. These absences are notified at
the end of each term.
What does it pay for:
it pays for the service contract for the photocopier
throughout the year and
it also contributes to a new photocopier which is pur-
chased.
It may also be used this year to help pay for the ink
for the printer.
