Dear Parents/Guardians:

Sleep is the best meditation. Dalai Lama

According to Canadian Paediatric Society, middle

school students need between 9-10 hours of sleep

every day. Teens need more sleep because their

minds and bodies are growing quickly. In order for

us to perform at optimum, we need sleep. There

are many reasons for student sleep deprivation.

The increase use of technology, social media and

gaming can raise concerns about physical and

emotional health. Chronically sleep deprived

students will have difficulty learning, listening,

concentrating, solving problems and making good

decisions. Insufficient sleep can also affect their

mood and ability to regulate negative emotions. A

consistent sleep routine, every day, with a

consistent sleep and wake time will improve

memory, engagement with learning, motivation and

social interactions. Think of sleep as important as

the air you breathe, the water you drink and the

food you eat. I hope you find this BBC article

Our Grade 8s have begun their secondary school

transition process. Many thanks to Ms. Sullivan

and the Grade 8 teachers for their efforts on

helping students have a successful transition to

Grade 9.

We are continuing to focus on our school goal of

building community. Teachers have been

facilitating talking circles about respect, belonging

and inclusion. We are cognizant of not becoming

complacent and remembering that we still have

work to do regarding diversity. On this note,

February is Black History Month, a time to honour

the legacy of Black Canadians. For 2018, the

theme of the Government of Canada’s Black

History Month campaign is Black Canadian Women:

Stories of Strength, Courage and Vision.

Happy Year of the Brown Earth Dog!

TEAM HURRICANE

Welcome to 2018! Team Hurricane teachers would

like to take this opportunity to thank families for

their generosity. We truly loved reading your kind

words and the thoughtful gifts. We are looking

forward to continuing our important work with your

child this year.

In French with Mme. D’Alfonso, students are

working on a unit on Carnaval that will conclude on

“Mardi Gras” (Feb. 13) with a pancake breakfast.

Joyeux Carnaval tout le monde!

In Language arts students are busy researching

and writing their speeches. They will also be

learning how to best present their information in a

captivating and entertaining way. Thank you to

parents, in advance, for listening to your child’s

speeches and supporting them through this

process. We will have team finals towards the end

of February. Students who are successful in their

presentation may have the opportunity to move on

to the District Speaking Festival on April 10th.

In Science, we have been working on a Chemistry

unit and have done some work with crystallization.

Students will be writing a test in the middle of the

month before moving on to an experiment based

project to learn about the scientific method.

In Socials with Ms. Leach, students have just

finished up a project about Mesopotamia and are

moving into a study around Ancient Egypt.

In field trip news, Team Hurricane will be going to

Science World on Feb. 26th. Our students will

explore the various galleries, participate in a

workshop, and view an OMNImax movie. In order

for this field trip to happen, we will need parent

drivers and volunteers. Thank you in advance to

those who are able to join us.

TEAM AVALANCHE

So far in 2018, our team has been learning about

ancient civilizations as well as the factors which

cause civilizations to thrive and decline. Ms. Turje’s

class has begun a unit on Mesopotamia and Ms.

Mattson and Mr. Rasmussen’s classes have been

studying Ancient Greece as well as Greek

Mythology. In Science, our team is looking at

Extreme environments as well as finishing a unit

about Climate Change. For P.E, our team is in full

swing with our wrestling and basketball units. We

also are having students investigate healthy living

through tracking a daily food journal and will begin

to research during Career Ed in order to prepare

for our Community Action Project. Our upcoming

team fieldtrip will on February 26th will be snow

tubing at Mount Seymour. We ask that you please

return permission forms and cash or cheque by

February 19th. Thank you for your continued

support in your child’s learning.

TEAM FIRESTORM

Team Firestorm students have been working hard

in January. In Math, the grade 7’s recently

finished a unit on transformations and the grade

6’s started Math Basics Testing. All of our classes

finished off their unit on electricity. This included

a lively debate about power generation methods in

the MACC classes.

With February upon us, the team is really looking

forward to beginning the Firestorm Olympics in

Social Studies.

TEAM THUNDER

January has been a busy month for team Thunder!

Our grade 8s just finished their high school visits,

and many of our student have expressed interested

in attending different honors/IB programs around

our district. While the grade 8's were out of the

building last week, our grade 7's had a

blast getting to spend some special time together

on a bowling field trip. In Language

Arts, all classes started reading Madeline L'Engle's

classic novel, A Wrinkle in Time, in preparation for

the Disney film release of this title coming up in

March. In Integrated Studies, students focused

on science this month, studying light, computational

thinking and microscopes. Up next, we are looking

forward to continuing with our Renaissance unit and

our upcoming Skating field trip on Monday

February 26th!

TEAM TROPICAL

Grade 8’s toured their neighbourhood high school

on the afternoon of Fri. Jan. 26. This opportunity

to see how a high school is organized, and gain

insight to the Electives is very valuable for many

students. Being able to picture their new school

also alleviates some uncertainty.

Students are asked to think about their yearbook

quote, which will be read as they cross the stage at

our Leaving Ceremony in June. They will be given

time in the computer lab to submit this online, as

well as to complete a survey for the yearbook.

Unfortunately, Langley Extreme Air Park field trip

planned for Feb. 26 has been cancelled. We are

working on alternative plans for that day.

Parents can follow their son/daughter’s school

work by checking Edmodo, Freshgrade, and the

student’s binder.

EXPLORATIONS

TECH ED NEWS It’s hard to believe Term 2 is almost done in the

Shop. All students started the term with a safety

and power tool review. We also spent some time

looking at hand tools, gave them a try and then

they learned to really appreciate the power tools!

The Grade 6/7’s started the term by designing,

building, decorating and rolling gravity racecars.

Some of their designs were quite unique and cute

and they worked hard at adjusting them to get the

best roll possible. We spent some time before

Christmas break working on tea light holders which

they cut, drilled, sanded and put a finish on.

Hopefully some of you received them as Christmas

presents. There’s nothing better than a homemade

gift made with love under the tree. These classes

are currently working on making a yo-yo to finish

the term, a toy which requires no batteries or

technology!!! The Grade 8 classes started their

term by cutting, power sanding and finish sanding

their big letters which hopefully they have hung up

in their rooms. They also made a project just in

time for Christmas, a beautiful cedar and pine

trinket box. It’s always amazing how their skills

improve over the three years of Tech Ed. The 8’s

are finishing up their term by designing, cutting

parts, drilling holes, and sanding their gumball

machine, a favorite project for the students.

ATHLETICS

We are starting basketball

again and we have four teams

running.

Grade 6’s are co-ed and they

play at lunch time Tuesday,

Thursday and Friday, with

some grade 8’s helping to coach and referee.

Coaches are Mr. Svorinic and Ms. Marcone

Page 4: A Special Pl-ace for a Special Age . · PDF filethrough tracking a daily food journal and will begin ... Citadel Middle School Page 4 st January 31 , 2018 Grade 7 boys are

Grade 7 boys are coached by Ms. Dawson and Ms.

Ryznar (Sam’s Mom) and they practice Friday after

school with games on Tuesday.

Grade 8 girls are coached by Ms. Weir and Ms.

Bjerke, and they practice Thursday afterschool

and games are on Wednesday.

Grade 8 boys are coached by Mr. Goring and they

practice Monday’s, with games on Wednesday.

We still need Refs and Scorekeepers for the

upcoming season, parents are welcome to

participate. E-mail Mr. Goring to request more

details. [email protected]
