The small letter b. stands for born

s. for single.
A capital B. means that the persoc member of the Brethren church.
Samuel Miller was a son of Daniel Miller. Daniel Miller was born
May 13, 1752. His father's name was Lewis Miller. Lewis Miller was
the father of fourteen children—nine sons and five daughters. Daniel
Miller was married to Barbara Long April 4, 1780.
Barbara Long was born March 6, 1757. This union was blessed
with seven sons and two daughters.
Samuel Miller, the subject of this sketch, was born in Rockingham
county, Va., Dec. 17, 1793. He grew to manhood in the same county
in which, he was born, and on March 19, 1S16, was married to Barbara
Sanger. Barbara Sanger was a daughter of Conrad Sanger. He was
twice married, and was the father of thirteen children, eleven of them
living to reach manhood and womanhood. Barbara, our esteemed grand-
mother, was born in Lancaster county, Pa., Aug. 27, 1791. She was
the only one that lived of a set of triplets, the other two having died at
time of birth, and she was so small that she could be placed in a quart
cup and the hand placed on top of the cup, but she grew to be a large,
portly woman, weighing over two hundred pounds. She, with her
parents, moved from Lancaster county, Pa., to Rockingham county. Va.,
in the year 181 3, and settled on a farm about six miles south of Harri-
sonburg, where she became acquainted with the voting man to whomshe was married three years later. Also three of Barbara's sisters mar-
ried three of Samuel Miller's brothers. After Samuel and Barbara were
married, they settled on a farm about two miles southwest of Harrison-
burg, Va., along what is known as the Warm Springs pike. They were
both members of the Brethren church. Their family consisted of three
sons, as follows
:
Daniel, b. Feb. iS, 1817. No. 1.
John B., b. April 27. lSwS No 2
Martin, b. Jan. 9, 1825. No. 3
They continued' to reside on' the above mentioned farm until the
fall of 1S39, when thev, with their entire family, moved to Allen county,
Ohio, and settled on the farm now occupied by Samuel R. |acobs, where
they lived until the lime of their death, which came ,to the husband miSept. 7, 1S61, at the age of 67 years, S months and' 20 days, lie wasburied in the old Miller cemetery, one mile east\>f the Sugar Creekchurch. His devoted wife continued to live at the old homestead, with
the second son, John B., until the death summons came to her, on May9, 1875, at the age of 83 years, 9 months and 12 clays, and she wasburied by the side of her faithful husband. This ends the earthly-
career of two persons, who should ever be held in high esteem by all of
their descendants, for the privations which they had to undergo and thehard, incessant labor necessary to convert the wilds of a new countryinto the beautiful and productive farming lands now enjoyed by manyof their descendants. Above all, should we hold them in high esteemfor the pious, Christian example which they have left us. Let us eachearnestly endeavor to live such lives that when our life work is endedwe can strike glad hands with, not only grandfather and grandmother, but also with our fathers and mothers, in the great -and grand reunion
around the dazzling throne in the sweet by and by.
No FIRST GENERATION.Daniel Miller, eldest son of Samuel and Barbara Miller, was born
in Rockingham count), \'a., Feb. 18, 181 7. He grew to manhood on
the same farm where he was born. His school privileges were what the
district school afforded, in the winter season only, and then not the full
term, for in his school days the grain had to be threshed by trampingwith horses, this being always left for the winter work, and as Danielwas the oldest of his father's family, it fell to his lot to lead or ride the
horses on the barn floor until the threshing was done, before he could
start to school. Well do I remember of hearing him say that the last
term of school he attended he went thirty-one days, and that was the
best chance he had ever had. In the summer and autumn of 1S38, whena young man of twenty-one, he, in company with several other youngmen of his community, Elder Daniel Brower being one of the party,
started for Ohio on horseback, coming first to Fairfield count)', wherewere living some of their relatives and friends, and from there the)'
came to Allen county, and passed through Lima when it was only a
small village. After they had viewed the country in different parts of
Allen county to their satisfaction, the)' returned to Fairfield county,
where Daniel's horse took sick and was unable to travel further. Theother members of the party desiring to return home, Daniel was obliged
to stay behind, but as his disposition all through life was never to allow
time to pass unimproved, and having been offered a position as teacher
in the district school where he was stopping, he procured a set of the
text books then in use, applied himself to study for three weeks, then
attended the county examination and received one of the best teacher's
certificates given by the county board that year. He then accepted the
position offered and taught the winter term of school. His horse having
regained its health by this lime, he again mounted for the return trip
home, arriving safely in Aur time*
