MOSMAN HIGH FLYER DECEMBER 2016
1
Well the end of the school year is fast
approaching and on behalf of all the staff
at Mosman High school, I would like to
thank all our Mosman High school
families for their support and
contributions to our school. Many of you
have attended information evenings,
parent teacher nights or forums or you
have been part of the P&C or the many
committees that take place at our school.
Your students also have been very busy
not only with exams and assessment
tasks but with the many extra-curricular
activities that take place at school
including performances, overseas and
local tours, Duke of Edinburgh
excursions, dance and so much more.
On Friday 9 December, students from
Years 7 – 10 will all receive their reports.
The standard of the achievement for our
students seems to improve every year. It
was a delight to give out so many
Certificates of Achievement and
Certificates of Excellence at the report
assemblies. The students are proud to
receive these awards and in every case
they are deserved.

A school community fostering creativity individuality and leadership while striving for excellence in teaching and learning.
Lots happening in the holidays
Over the summer vacation there will be
lots happening at Mosman High. The
playground will be resurfaced to
remove the irregular blocks (better for
handball ) and the library and main
foyer will be painted and carpeted. This
will be great as our library is probably
the most used area in the school. The
last day for students and teachers is
Friday 16 December.
2017 Students and staff return
On Friday 27 January 2017 all teachers
and office staff return.
Then on Monday 30 January:
Year 7 - arrive for an assembly in
the hall at 9.00am
Year 12 - arrive in the hall for a
9.40am assembly
Year 11- arrive in the hall at 10.00am
On Tuesday 31 January Years 8, 9 and
10 arrive at 8.55am for an assembly in
the COLA before moving to year
assemblies.

Year 7 will participate in O Week and all
students will start the year with
Motivational Media.
Staff changes
Generally we have only minor changes
at Mosman but this year there have been
a number. On the HSIE staff we sadly
say farewell to Mrs Burns who has been
a dynamo and asset to our school. She is
retiring and will be sadly missed. Mr
Neil Parsons will be replacing Mrs
Burns.
On the mathematics staff Mr Gosney is
moving interstate and will be replaced by
Mr Callum Johnson and we welcome
back Jenny Harris after maternity leave.
In PDHPE Rob Winslow is leaving and
we welcome Reece Watson in his place.
Mrs Brown will be taking maternity
leave and Jessica Richardson will be
filling her shoes. Mr Clarke is taking a
well-deserved sabbatical and while Mr
Jones will take over the Industrial
Technology timber, we welcome back
Ms Katy Doppler. On the science staff
we farewell Mrs Campbell and welcome
Mr Adip Komada and Mr James Lee to
the science team. Also in HSIE Mr Toby
Jones will continue at Mosman High.
There may be a few other changes as our
numbers have increased a little and I will
let you know of those at the start of
2017.
Good News
Congratulations to Tian Zordan (Y12)
whose HSC art work will be displayed as
part of ArtExpress at the Armoury
Gallery. Also congratulations to his
teacher Mrs McCarthy. Speaking of
success, our jazz ensemble was invited to
perform at the main Christmas function
held by Mosman Council. The Christmas
thank you to all Mosman volunteers is a
feature of the Mosman Council
Christmas Calendar. We will be holding
our very own Christmas function “Carols
in the COLA” on Tuesday 13 December
commencing at 6.00pm.
Presentation Night for Years 9-11 will
take place on Thursday evening and as
always it is a celebration of the
wonderful achievements of our students.
Then on Monday 12 December we hold
the Presentation Night for Years 7 and 8.
By holding two Presentation Evenings
we are able to reward the many
deserving students and complete the
events in a timely manner.
It was a delight to welcome our New
Year 7 students for 2017. They seem to
be a very impressive group. I also must
commend the Year 9 students who as
trained Peer Support leaders introduced
Year 7 to the school and conducted
tours for the students.
Fowlers Gap exhibition
In the last school holidays a large
group of art students, teachers and
parents, travelled to Fowlers Gap,
which is south west of Broken Hill.
They spent a week at the UNSW Field
Centre painting drawing and sculpting
the beautiful outback scenery. This
Friday evening at 6.00pm the works
constructed on this field trip will be on
display in our wonderful art block. I
know this is a busy time but you are
very welcome to pop in and see the
incredible art constructed.
2017
I wish each and every one of you,
Season’s Greetings and hope you have a
wonderful holiday vacation. I look
forward to seeing you in 2017 when we
will strive to do it all again and even
better than this year. Thank you again
for your incredible support and
contributions to Mosman High School.

Salvation Army Christmas Appeal
MOSMAN HIGH FLYER DECEMBER 2016
3
From the Deputy Principal - Tony Gahan & Colette Longley
As we conclude the 2016 school year and
head towards Christmas, I encourage
everyone in our school community to
take some time out from the end-of-year
hustle and bustle to reflect on the past
year and how Mosman High School has
had a positive impact on the students. It
is the synergy which exists between the
students , their teachers and the parents
and carers which makes this school so
great.
I would like to thank everyone who
involved themselves in the life of the
school this year. Many wonderful events
occurred through-out the year which
were successful due to the product of
hard working and generous volunteers. I
particularly thank the Parents and
Citizens Association and its
committees for their enthusiasm and
energy throughout 2016.
The students of Mosman High School
have upheld the moral principles
regarding the spirit of giving, to those
children who are less fortunate. To this
end, they have generously given
presents to the Salvation Army
Christmas Appeal. The Kombi is
almost full and its Friday display of
ever increasing numbers of presents
has been a lot of fun and supported a
feeling of good will.
I have included a list of books
compiled by Ms Mulhall which may
help encourage youth to embrace the
love of reading books. This is
particularly pertinent regarding issues
around sleep deprivation and its
associated problems facing students.
The link below might be a useful
discussion point as well. There’s some
very relevant information relating to the
impact of technology on our sleep
patterns with a particular focus on
teenagers.

deserved break.

Stiefvator, The Raven King. Stiefvater’s Raven Cycle started with a dark prophecy: that Blue Sargent, the unmagical

Zlatka and Fania, in Auschwitz.
Wynne-Jones, Tim. The Emperor of Any Place. Evan meets the grandfather he has never known after his father’s

Performing Arts News FROM John Feros, Head Teacher Performing Arts
Is the term over yet?
This has been such a busy term for the
school and the Performing Arts Faculty.
But wait there’s more! Our Music
Ensembles are performing for local
primary schools and the String Ensemble
will be at The Garrison bringing some
Christmas cheer. We began the term with
Year 9 Drama performing Blindside
under the guidance of Ms Mulhall. This
was a successful production as students
delved into the Epic style of Brecht and
certainly extended their acting skills.
Next came our fabulous MOscars
presentation. This evening just gets
better and better with our young
filmmakers producing entertaining and
well-crafted films. Winners included
Julian Kopkas ‘The Split’ and Spencer
Turnbull ‘The Exchange’. Special
mention must go to ‘The Detectives’
from Yr 7; this film had a solid
narrative and was well edited. Finally,
‘Greendale Creek’ – Juliette Davies,
Emily O’Brien and Tilly Drew certainly
caused some controversy with its horror
genre.
But wait, there’s more!
After the MOscars Year 8 Drama
presented Hating Alison Ashley. Miss
Urlich and class entertained audiences
with a classic interpretation. The
students were well cast and really grew
with their characters to create some
memorable stereotypes.
We finished November with a brilliant
concert Glam and Glitz. This was
perhaps one of our strongest end of year
shows. We normally miss the
contribution of Yr 12 due to their first
term of the HSC, but our students from
year 7-10 produced some outstanding
performances. The second performance
was memorable for a few thousand
reasons, but our students demonstrated
such professionalism in continuing the
show. As they say in showbiz, the show
must go on. Special thanks to everyone
involved in making the night work!
I’d like to thank all the Performing Arts
staff who have made 2016 such a
productive year for our students. School
is all about opportunity and our staff
have certainly provided our students
with numerous performance
opportunities to showcase and nurture
the incredible talent in our school.
Looking forward to some fabulous
performances in 2017.

If looking for activities in the holidays
the State Library offers a Holiday
program : http://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/
learning/kids-and-families.
From 16th to 25th January they will be
offering a range of fun activities and
workshops for kids including free
weekday tours at 11am, a full
photography workshop and a May
Gibbs inspired artmaking space.
They also have a Christmas Survival
Guide to help you get through the silly
season.
And still on the subject of the State
Library – it is worthwhile joining. You
Sirius Library Matters FROM Deborah Mulhall, Librarian
BY Elisabetta Dent, Year 8 Student
During the past two terms, Year 8 drama
guided by our teacher Miss Urlich
worked on the production of the play
Hating Alison Ashley. The play follows
the story of Erica Yurken as she
deals with the struggles of being an
overly-dramatic teen living in the
eighties.
She battles with her unbearingly
embarrassing family and also has to deal
with the unfortunate blessing of being
intellectually more capable then all of her
classmates combined! That is until she
meets Alison Ashley...
The light hearted play was a joy to
perform and all students, including
myself, were very excited when given
the opportunity to show off all our hard
work. We performed a matinee for
Year 7 special drama and also performed
two full night performances for friends
and family.
The production included lighting and
sound as well as 80’s themed costumes
and multiple set changes. So much time
can then access their databases for free!
Much better than Google when it comes
to academic needs.
And at the end of this year I leave you
with this quote:
“One can never have enough socks,”
said Dumbledore.”Another Christmas
has come and gone and I didn’t get a
single pair. People will insist on giving
me books.”
― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the
Sorcerer's Stone
Year 8 ‘Hating Alison Ashley’ Performance
and enthusiasm was put into the play
over this term, with it being rewarded
by great memories and gathering
further experience to channel into future
drama pieces.
And the countdown is on to a Library
refurbishment! We are very excited that
the Sirius Library will be newly
carpeted and repainted in the holidays,
even though it means packing up over
14,000 items. It will be well worth it to
have the students come back to a
vibrant, enticing reading and learning
space. I promise before and after
photos!
With the holidays upon us, some new
good reading is always welcome and
makes for great stocking stuffers. I could
give a list 3 or 4 pages but instead will

National School Basketball Championships FROM Phil Webster, Head Teacher HSIE
Our U17 boys and U15 girls are
currently mid tour at the 2016 national
school basketball championships in
Melbourne.
Our boys have beaten Doncaster Vic and
Bendigo Senior College with a narrow
loss to Rockingham WA.
Our girls had narrow losses to Mater
Christie and Berwick College and have
had some injuries to key players.
The Mosman school spirit is playing a
huge part in the 154 team tournament
and our players and parents should be
very proud of their efforts against very
strong opposition.

TAS Report FROM Mark Jones, Head Teacher TAS
Wow, what a year in TAS.
2016 has been a very productive year in
the TAS Faculty. I’d like to thank all our
staff for guiding the students through an
ever increasing range of skills
development and technology. I’m proud
to say that Mosman High students are on
the whole, very capable designers and
work in a very safe manner in our
workshops. We have successfully
transformed the Tech. Metal workshop
into a more multi-purpose Design studio.
The laser cutter, new data projector, an
upgrade to the tools needed to shape
wood, plastic and metal combined with
textiles equipment, has made the
workshop a truly flexible creative space.
Also, CLS3 has 26 new computers
installed and we thank Mr Panagopolous
for his hard work in making the transition
for this fabulous technology resource as
seamless as possible.
With the success of our Design &
Multimedia Exhibition behind us, we will
enjoy hearing of the successes when the
HSC results are released next week. As
mentioned previously, we’re pleased with
the success of James McIntyre and Mae
Hartrick who have had their Multimedia
Major works nominated for the HSC
Intech Display. Congratulations also to
their teacher, Mr Walker.
Mr Clark finished the year as the much
admired leader (Year Advisor) or Team
’16. He embarks on a 1 year sabbatical
which will see him creating some more
marvellous creations in wood as well as
sailing along the west coast of Canada.
We wish him an enjoyable year and look
forward to his return in 2018.
We thank Mr Shiells for his work with
the TAS Faculty filling the load after Ms.
Miles left. As Mr. Shiells has a Masters
in Filmmaking, his stop animation
classes received some invaluable tuition.
We wish him well at South Sydney High
for next year.
Mrs. Brown’s Food Tech class recently
had a celebratory lunch where the
students designed a wonderful menu and
prepared a variety of delicious dishes
We wish Mrs. Brown all the best for
the safe arrival of her baby early in
2017. We look forward to frequent
visits next year and her return to
teaching at Mosman in 2018. We have
2 fantastic teachers to take the classes
in place of Mr Clark & Mrs Brown but
I’ll tell you about them in the New
Year.
An interesting collaboration of
Faculties has been embraced by
Mosman High and we look forward to
seeing the new STEAM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, Art, Maths)
classes take shape. Mr Walker & Mrs.
McCarthy are driving this initiative
and I’m sure the Yr 9 & 10 classes for
next year will be involved in some
wonderful units of work.
This will supplement the initiatives of
Mr Wood (and the coding groups led by
Evan & Ian) when we acquire and build
a few robotic arms, Arduino units and
some upgraded Lego robotics. With the
successful use of our laser cutter across
so many areas, we may find the need for
another form of rapid prototyping, CNC
Mill, to complete the trilogy with the 3D
printer. Again, I’ll keep you posted.
The Year 10 Engineering class have had
recent success constructing and flying
their around the pole planes. The Design
lab was a real buzz as we had numerous
dog fights closely contested. I will place
some of the video on the school website.
All designs successfully flew although
some were faster than others. An
enjoyable competitive atmosphere
prevailed.

With wonderful work being completed in
Textiles, Art Metal Jewellery,
Hospitality, Software Design,
Technology Mandatory, Food
Technology, the lunchtime wood turners,
Multimedia, Timber and Design &
Technology all year, I could fill this High
Flyer with fantastic photos & tales.
I thank the parents for their support in
paying their materials contributions. I
thank the TAS staff for their dedication
to and passion for to the subjects they
teach and I thank the students for
treating our workshops with respect
and allowing their creative dreams to
become 3 dimensional.
Enjoy the holidays and see you all next
year.
Student Stars Congratulations to Erin McKinnon (Year
12) who was recently honoured with the
prestigious Pierre De Coubertin Award.
Named after the founder of the modern
Olympic Games, the Pierre de Coubertin
Award recognises students who
demonstrate academic excellence and
sporting prowess while exemplifying the
Olympic values, in particular good
sportsmanship.
In other exciting news Harmony
Lovegrove (Year 10) will be performing
in the Packemin Youth Production of
CATS at the Chatswood Concourse in
January 2017. Composed by Andrew
Lloyd Webber, and based on Old
Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T. S.
Eliot, CATS is currently the 4th longest
running musical on the West End
and Broadway.
Harmony will be sharing the stage with
Simon Pryce (the Wiggles, The Phantom
of the Opera) as well as over 100 other
young performers from all over Sydney.

Spectacular Science
On the 23rd November 7 Yellow and I
attended Spectacular Science at the
University of Sydney. This was
a great experience for all of us as it
provided an opportunity to extend the
students scientific knowledge as well as
expose them to real scientists in real
laboratories!
We all made it to school by 8am for our
super early start and were dropped off
inside the University of Sydney. The
students were amazed at the ‘Hogwarts’
style buildings and the fact that the
University actually is like a small town.
For many it was their first experience
inside a university and some interesting
observations followed - for example, the
brand new glass Law building versus the
old Chemistry building!
Our first activity of the day was a
Spectacular Science presentation by the
chemistry staff. During the hour
they witnessed hydrogen gas explosions,
the luminescence of luminol, how to
make fireworks (in a laboratory of
course), thermite reactions and the
hard-to-believe touch powder - that
explodes upon touching (or too many
bumps as it is wheeled in on the
trolley!).
After a very quick morning tea we
headed into our first workshop of the
day which was hunting for
invertebrates in leaf litter. Once the
students had found some they had to
identify them using a microscope
and identification chart. Students also
learnt a lot about bees - including a
dissection under the microscope!
We headed off to our next workshop
which was in the second year Physics
laboratories. Students were broken up
into 3 groups and worked with tutors
who were current and recently
graduated students. They moved
around the stations and explored the
phenomenons of optics,
thermodynamics, magnetic levitation
and radiation.
The closing lecture of the day was
from Dr Karl Kruszelnicki , who
enlightening the 300 strong crowd on the
topic of where science is heading - in our
lifetimes, the new jobs that will be
created and how Australia can
become World leaders in a Zero
Emissions future within the next 10
years. We were so engrossed in the
Q&A at the end that we had to cut it
short and rush off for the bus!
Overall, the day was a huge success. I
was immensely proud of all the students
for their impeccable manners, their keen
interest in all the activities and their
appropriate use of mobile phones! They
really shone, not just to me, but also to
the tutors who made numerous positive
comments about their behaviour and
engagement. I can’t wait for next year !!
