A sad farewell to Avril who will be truly missed
Tributes have been pouring in for Avril Harris who was
known for her kind and generous nature for her love and
affection for animals, particularly cats.
John said she had been a volunteer at two cat rescue
centres and often picked up strays on her rounds and gave them a home. “The
Dereham Cats Protection in Longham was probably her favourite place, and Venture
Farm cat rescue in Mattishall. They were a very important part of her life. She would
go to socialise the cats ready for rehoming and also help clean them out and feed
them. Paul said ‘she had been a volunteer for over 14 years and will be greatly missed’.
“She came every week without fail and was very good with the cats,” he said. “She
was always rounding up strays and bringing them in. She was such a caring person and
also supported us at fund-raising events.”
“She always had biscuits for the cats and a stroke and a cuddle for them too”.
We have been homing over 50
cats a month for the last 6
months, we have now broken a
record.
Well done everyone for your
hard work :-) x x

Happy cats in their new homes
Dear Everyone
We just thought we'd drop you a
little line to give you a progress
update on Muffin since our
August update and to let you
know that Muffin now has a play-
mate called Janet.
Firstly Muffin - after a very
traumatic trip to the cattery in October - we found out how much he
actually hates being put into a cat box and poor Jon suffered multiple
scratches, Muffin was stressed out so badly it upset us both. Once at the
cattery our lovely lady who runs it said that he settled in, albeit spent most
of his time in his igloo bed, but ate well and went out of the cat flap
regularly, which pleased us both. Since October we have been here all of
the time and he has really made progress. He rarely hides now, even when
we have visitors. He sits on my lap (not so keen on men we have found)
and is super loving. He eats well and now comes up and down stairs
(something he wouldn't even entertain in the beginning). He has definitely
made himself at home - which is great. Although he still very difficult to
handle - we are steeling ourselves for his visit to the vet for his booster!!!
We had a heart in mouth moment before Christmas when late into the
evening he went out into the garden (something he had shown no interest
in) and went missing for about an hour. I called and called but nothing.
About an hour later in the darkness I saw a ginger flash jump over the fence
and back into the house. He now goes out fairly regularly but only at night (I
suppose it is quieter) and is never gone for more than about 1/2 hour.
Cont….
Muffin and Janet
Not long after we brought Muffin home
we noticed a lovely little black and white
cat that kept coming into our garden and
eating all the food that we put out for
birds and regularly catching birds and
eating them, she was ravenous. She
seemed to be in our garden when we
went to bed and when we woke up. We asked around our village but nobody
seemed to know who she belonged to. After a couple of months we took a photo
of her and put posters up in the village and took her to our local vets to see if she
was chipped, but she wasn't. We also registered her on a missing animal website
but to date no one has come forward for her. As winter started we left an
outbuilding door open for her at night and made a little bed up and noticed that she
slept in there. We both felt really bad for her so started to feed her but did not let
her in because we were so worried about Muffin (we did not want to alienate him,
especially as he was making such fab progress). We decided to let her in one
morning to see how he would react and he was brilliant - he sniffed her and licked
her a bit!. To cut a long story short we let her into our home in December and she
has been with us ever since. Muffin absolutely loves her and she seems to have
brought him out of his shell even more. They especially love playing together first
thing in the morning and race around chasing each other all over the house. We
are so pleased that he seems happy with the situation.
We have now had her checked and vaccinated and all seems healthy and we have
since found out from a neighbour that there is a possibility that somebody from our
village moved and left her behind.
Anyway I attach a more recent photo of Muffin and a picture of the two of them
(they were playing when this picture was taken). We hope you enjoy seeing Muffin
and we feel so lucky to have him, so thank you.
We hope all of you and the rescue cats are all keeping well.

she has grown and in
her mischievous
behaviour.
We thought you'd like to see the
attached photo of Smokey (who you
knew as
'Molly') relaxing in her new home.
When we brought her home in
January she was very nervous but
now she's discovered the warm
spring sunshine in our conservatory
she's much happier and enjoys watching the garden and seeing other cats
passing by.
We've managed to get the last of the tangles out of her fur and the flea
problem seems to be OK now. She's also had an introductory check-up with
the vet in Attleborough.
With many thanks and best wishes, from
Elizabeth & Robert Puddicombe and Smokey

So unfair for a cat
who is so beautiful! Katie is now in
her new home
Colin was abandoned by his owners and
then upset the cats of the neighbour who
took on his care, so he arrived into our care
following a unsettled period of his life.
His unusual appearance, is caused by a old
injury to his ear which was most likely left
to heal without assistance. He is very
unsure of life here in his pen and sits quiet-
ly watching and waiting for something to happen. He appreciates a fuss
after a little reassurance and seems to be quite a gentle boy.
He now needs a home in which he can settle and build a bit of confidence.
Colin needs to be the only cat. He would appreciate some space and a
quieter home. He has the makings of a pleasant pet and we are sure there
is more to him than he is letting us see.
Howard is quite happy to lay upon
your lap and receive a nice fuss. A
friendly, handsome boy who prefers
human company to that of other
cats, so is best
taken on as a
only cat. He will
need access
to a garden and
the outdoors.
Nice boy.
Handsome young chap aged at
only 18 months. He has given us
the appearance of being a friendly
and cheerful boy during his short
stay with us. Unfortunately we
know little of his background as he
was abandoned by his previous
owner.
