VC News

As we begin this new school year, I am very pleased to have the opportunity to help lead this faith and learning community as the Principal of Vancouver College. I am looking forward to the challenge and also am excited to meet the many members of the Vancouver College extended family. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. David Hardy for his fine stewardship of the College. It was a pleasure to work with Mr. Hardy for three weeks in August to ensure both a smooth transition and to better understand the rich culture and traditions of the school.

It is a very exciting time at Vancouver College as the finishing touches are being made to the new Field Turf athletic field, Mondo-surface running track and the re-vamped elementary playground. The boys are very excited to have these proj-ects completed and they will add greatly to the wonderful facilities of our school.

All of these projects should be finished in early October so be sure to drop by and see the newest addi-tions to the campus.

Our annual Homecoming Football game takes place at 1:30pm on Saturday, September 26th. This day will also be the re-dedication and blessing of O’Hagan Field. I hope that you will be able to join us for this event and look forward to meeting you!

New ArrivalsCongratulations to John-Paul Planta (‘97) and his wife Cheryl Antonio-Planta on the arrival of their first son, Jaxson Owen Planta. Jaxson was born on July 17, 2009 and weighed 7 pounds 5 ounces.

Lindsay (’97) and Tracy Wiebe just added a second child to their family! Melanie Brooke Wiebe was born September 10, 2009 and was welcomed to the family by her mom, dad and big brother Ryden (2 1/2 yrs).

Soccer, or football as it is known around the world, has been played by Van-couver College athletes throughout its 86 years of history but never on O’Hagan Field. The new turf now provides the opportunity for the soccer, rugby and field lacrosse teams to join football in playing at home.

Over the years, many players have donned the VC uniform, along with some very talented players that went on to play at the university level and even professionally. This year is no different with over 20 players eager to put on the school colours and shoot for another good showing at the Provincials. The most anticipated games, of course, are against St George’s where we play one regular season game on Oct 13 at O’Hagan and a home and away playoff series to deter-mine the independent representative for the Vancouver Richmond Zone playoffs.

Let’s raise the roof. Come cheer on the Irish!

Remember Vancouver College in your will.

Last year two members of Vancouver College’s class of 2011 had a very spe-cial summer to remember. Ganasan Ponjani and Brendan Lim, both played for the Bantam AAA Vancouver Mount-ies baseball team, who represented BC at the Western Canadian Champion-ships. Earning the right to compete at the prestigious tournament based on their team’s strong performance at last years BC Provincial championships.

At the BC Championships held in Port Coquitlam, both VC students contrib-uted to their team’s success. Ironically, the team-mates and class-mates are former Little League foes. Ponjani is a slick fielding shortstop and 2nd base-man from Little Mountain Baseball, while Lim, a Dunbar Little League gradu-ate, plays 1st and 3rd base. Both young men also pitched when called upon to do so, and had innings in the outfield. In addition to their defensive contribu-tions, the VC 2011 students contributed offensively. Lim was selected as the Pro-vincial MVP in large part because of his hot bat at the BC’s, which included a 320 foot grand-slam homer in a must win round robin game, and a base clearing double in the semi-final game against a previously undefeated team. Ponjani, the consummate team player, contrib-uted whenever called upon, and even bypassed a family vacation to allow him to practice with the team before depart-ing for Saskatchewan.

At the Western Canadian Champion-ships, Team BC dominated the round robin portion of the tournament, and outscored their opponents 53-13. This propelled them to the gold medal game where they lost a heart-breaker 4-2 to Team Saskatchewan. While not the fi-nal outcome they had hoped for, both VC students can hold their heads high knowing they contributed to their team’s very successful season, which included 73 games, over 50 practices, and count-less travel hours. Of the two Vancouver College 2011 students, their Team Man-ager, Ted Pawlick, had the following to say: “Ganasan and Brendan are great baseball players, and their character, leadership, and commitment were out-standing. These are two fine young men, and were a pleasure to coach.”

For the 2009 season, Brendan played as an under-age player for the Vancou-ver Cannons in the highly regarded BC Premier Baseball League, and hit his

first BCPBL home run. Ganasan opted to play for the Vancouver Community Baseball Midget AA team, where he teamed up with his brother Ellan (VC 2010). Remarkably, despite the hours on the diamond and traveling to the many practices games, both grade 10 students have maintained First Class Academic Honours, so are meeting VC’s goal to be well-rounded life-long learners.

Phillip ScrubbThe consummate basketball player represented BC at the Canada sum-mer games placing fourth after a hard fought semi final game loss to Quebec the eventual winners.

Evan Cheng and Marc AddisonStayed behind after the Canadian High School championships to attend the national junior rowing team selection camp. Both made the Junior team that would represent Canada at the CanA-mMex regatta. Both made the 8+ boat that eventually placed 6th under a new format. Instead of a tri-regatta between the three countries the CanAmMex was fully integrated into a large scale re-gatta, which provided excellent racing and learning opportunities. Many of the races included US development boats providing highly competitive racing.

Canadian Junior rowers improved with each day. “We came down here as strangers to each other and after sev-eral days of rowing and racing together we left as a team. It was really fun to see the individual and team growth over the week,” remarked Men’s Coach Brian Carr. Mark returns to VC for grade 12 while Evan has moved on to UBC.

recent Alumni Continue to ImpressAngus Taylor and Rohan Stewart com-peted at the Canadian National Track & Field Championships and the Pan AM Junior Track & Field Championships over the summer, Angus - placed 2nd in dis-cuss and hammer at nationals and 8th in the Pan Ams; Rohan placed 1st in 200m at nationals and 7th at the Pan Am’s.

Competing at the Canada Summer Games, Trey Henderson placed 3rd in hammer, Angus Taylor placed 2nd in dis-cus and 2nd in hammer and Sean Addi-son won Gold in the men’s rowing 8+.

Anthony Jacob rowed for Canada’s U23 men’s 4 at the World U23 Rowing Cham-pionships placing 4th.

Roy Cameron played football under Coach Fred

Owens at Vancouver Col-lege. He was one of the most outstanding football players in VC’s history. He later played for the BC Lions along with Peter Ohler, Paul Seale, Sonny Homer, Barney Therrien, and Greg Findlay.

Where Are They Now?

Over this past summer, a group of VC Fighting Irish competed in the National U -15 Flag Football Championships in Ottawa on July 24 and 25, bringing home the silver medal. Representing the Westside Warriors were Vancouver College students Liam Mahara, Liam Mackay, Miguel Banting, Alex “Bubba” Kucher, Luke Frigon, Andrew Pauls, subbing for Eli Pauls who suffered a broken arm at the Eastern Washington football camp, and alternate Paul Glambin-skas. Coach Mike Pauls and assistant coaches Kevin Frigon and Doug Pauls made up the team.

In Flag football, teams play 5 on 5 on a smaller field, with 3 downs to make it to mid field and then 3 more to score, making it a fun and very fast style of football. It is suitable to the group of quick players from last season’s grade 8 provincial championship team (except for Luke Frigon QB -grade 7 last year).

The team earned a berth and all expenses paid trip to the Nationals after placing second in the lower mainland and going unbeaten in the provincial playoffs and defeating the defending BC champs from Coquitlam in overtime.

At the nationals, the boys would be up against experienced pro-vincial teams including Ontario, who had won the last two World Championships in the United States. BC went undefeated in the round robin 3-0 with a combined score of 121 - 44. Quarter final action saw them play Nova Scotia beating them 40 to 24, moving the team into the semi-finals against Quebec where they dominated play, coming away with a 35 to 13. The final was a tight battle against Ontario. With minutes to go and a 4 point lead, all that was needed was to drive down the field and run down the clock. Unfortunately the Irish were not able to sustain that drive, giving Ontario the ball where they scored on a long bomb to win by 2 points (30 to 28).The Irish players played like champions and represented Vancouver College with pride and determination.
