Message From The Chair

Now that 4th of July has passed summer is officially here and hot. There are several ways to enjoy the heat: go away, go higher or stay in a cool place. One cool place to enjoy Monday thru Thursday and on Saturday is the library.

Summer programs for children are on Monday mornings. The summer reading table is set up just as you enter and staffed with young volunteers to help the whole family.

FOAL has evening concerts and astronomy nights to keep everyone entertained in the cooler hours after sunset. FOAL Teen Tours have several events planned and have already gone to the coast and the Underground Garden in Fresno.

Participating in any of these events provides an opportunity to make new friends which is what FOAL is all about. Our mission to provide a cultural gathering place is very important in all seasons but especially during those times of year when we can be outside enjoying our foothill community and weather. Come join us!

Telescope Contest Winner: “Star Searcher”

FOAL is proud to announce the winner of the contest to name our large telescope. Five year old Elodie Crane of Shaver Lake took the honors among 47 entries with the name “Star Searcher” Her reason was “Because it searches the stars”. Contestants responded to the question “Why do you think your choice is the best name for the telescope?” According to Mitch Smith, one of the judges on the panel, “Elodie’s entry summed it up the best”.

A plaque will be mounted on the telescope with its new name. Congratulations to Elodie, and thank you to participants and judges for helping us find the best fit for this fantastic addition to our astronomy program. See Star Searcher in action on the upcoming astronomy nights: July 13th and Aug 6th, 8:30-10 pm. and Sept. 17th 8:00-9:30 p.m.

Congratulations are in order for Sierra Frost, winner of the

2018 FOAL Scholarship. Each year, seniors have the

opportunity apply for the $500 scholarship, which is

awarded to a graduating high school senior who resides in

the Sierra School District, has been an active member of

the FOAL Teen Program and a regular library user. The

applicants must have volunteered at least 40 hours for

FOAL or the Auberry Library.

According to the committee members, this year was

challenging, with several well-deserving applicants. The

winner, Ms. Frost, plans to attend Oakhurst Community

Laurie Morvan Returns to Auberry

Blues artist Morvan & her band play in Sohm Garden

On June 2, lead vocalist and sizzling guitarist Laurie Morvan returned with her band to Auberry to a cheering crowd in Sohm Garden. The event marked the 111th free concert sponsored by Friends of the Auberry Library. Locals took advantage of the late spring, cusp of summer weather to enjoy a pleasant musical night out. The touring band was busy celebrating its new album “Gravity” having left Santa Rosa that morning, stopping in Auberry to play, and set to arrive in L.A. that same night. Besides Laurie, the band features Pat Morvan, bass; Lisa Morvan, backing vocals; Tommy Salyers, keyboard; Lonnie Jones, drums.

Laurie greeted the crowd and thanked fans everywhere for the band’s recent surge in airplay on Sirius XM and RockRadio. The group has been around the proverbial blues block, beginning with its debut album “Out of the Woods” in 1996 when the group called itself Backroad Shack. As the Laurie Morvan Band it has produced “Find My Way Home,” 2004; “Cures What Ails Ya,” 2007; “Fire It Up!” 2009; “Breathe Deep,” 2011; and “Gravity,” 2018.

Although the concert featured mostly selections from their new album, like “My Moderation” and “Shake your Tailfeathers,” the band also served up some old favorites including “My Baby Says” and “No Working during Drinking Hours.” Laurie is a consummate blues vocalist and guitar player. She covers everything from the sonorous and soulful -think B.B. King- to downright searing slide guitar riffs. She closed the concert with a personal version of “Little Wing,” which she introduced as, “Laurie Morvan playing Stevie Ray Vaughn, playing Jimi Hendrix.”

which still continues today. James also teaches poetry-writing seminars though

Harvest Festival Date Set

Festival goers enjoyed music, food, and arts at the new venue last year.

Mark your calendars for Oct 13-14th, the date set for this year's Harvest Festival. After last year's move to the Sierra High campus, event sponsors FOAL and Eastern Fresno County Historical Society are looking forward to an even larger festival this fall. Look forward to seeing more food booths and vendor opportunities. Although this is not a fund-raiser for FOAL, we have taken it on in the interest of one of our key mission elements: building a vibrant cultural gathering place. It has also been a great opportunity to partner with other community organizations. We look forward to seeing you there!

This summer marks the 10th year FOAL has partnered with the Bertha and John Garabedian Charitable Foundation to present Free Teen Tours. Fun, educational trips focusing on cultural and natural History.

June saw two tours. One trip to the coast included tide pooling and visiting an Elephant Seal reserve. Another trip visited the historical Forestiere Underground Gardens in Fresno.

Future tours this summer will include the Downing Planetarium at CSUF and the Fossil Discovery Center in Fairmead.

For more information on our Free Teen Tour Program visit our website or contact the Auberry Library.

6 Longing for a Garden Party? FOAL has you Covered!

Have you looked for the ideal outdoor venue for an event in Auberry and found nothing? Want to have a small afternoon or evening get together?

As a result of several requests to use the Sohm Garden, the FOAL board adopted a use policy for that space at the May board meeting. Anyone in the general public, an individual or group, may apply in advance to use the park-like area adjacent to the Auberry Library. Included in use (which must be after library hours) are parking spaces, two restrooms, and the lawn with benches and electrical outlets for a price of $25. Use of the small kitchen may also be arranged. The use policy stipulates no alcohol, pets or firearms and all trash must be removed.

Locksmith Donates Time

FOAL wishes to give a big thanks to Scott Adams, owner of Foothill Mobile Locksmith. As part of the preparation to allow for the rental of Sohm Garden, we needed to close off the main library space from the kitchen/restroom space. Mr Adams removed and replaced the existing lock, installing a new sturdy lock to protect the library. After the job was done, he let us know that he would not be billing us for the work. Thank you Foothill Mobile Locksmith, for helping us serve our community!

Summer Book Sale Completed

FOAL conducted its latest book sale Jun 4-6 at the FOAL office. The sale netted $542 , which will help support our programs. Many thanks to Aaron Turner, who routinely donates a large amount of time and energy to organizing books and helping to make these sales happen.

The Runaway (Valkyrie, #2) by Kate O’Hearn (2014)

The second book of the Valkyrie series by Kate O’Hearn, The Runaway, was an amazing book for all fantasy lovers. The Runaway is about a young Valkyrie named Freya who is one day asked by her leader, Odin from the Norse myths, to go and bring back a banished and de-winged Valkyrie Brunhilde from Midgard, otherwise known as Earth. Along her way, Freya finds out Brunhilde’s secrets. Knowing these tells her that if she were to bring Brunhilde back to Asgard, Freya’s family would be endangered. Along her course of securing her family’s safety, she discovers her twin.

If you’re interested in learning more about Valkyries or if you want a thrill, you should start reading the Valkyries series now.

Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller (2011)

Reminiscent of Mary Renault’s Greek novels, this is the story of Achilles, Greek hero of the Trojan Wars, as told from the perspective of his childhood friend and, later, lover. The author has modernized the old texts to make the legends more accessible. But she accurately reflects the Greek mythology and the tale of the Iliad. The characters come to life for the reader, making this an excellent companion to the Iliad or to books on the Greek myths and heroes.
