Lake View Hill Park is a conservancy park

situated uniquely on the

grounds of a former sanatorium.

The Friends of Lake View Hill Park was

formed in 2005 after decades of effort to

“save the hill” and preserve this woodland

historic treasure.

We are part of the Dane County Parks Friends

program and work in partnership with Parks

as well as Dane County Human Services.

The Friends organizes activities year round,

including ecological restoration work pro-

jects, educational events, and seasonal

events with the Lake View Neighborhood.

We work in partnership with neighbors, area

schools, scout troops, churches and youth

groups.

The board of directors meets quarterly in the

former Lake View Sanatorium at 1202 North-

port Drive in Madison, WI.

Lake View Hill is a Dane County Park overlook-ing Lake Mendota and Madison’s Northside. The Park is one of the highest points in the County and has 26 acres of upland woods, 15 acres of meadows, and the great lawn.

This park is the former site of the Lake View Sanatorium, used from 1930 until 1966 for the treatment of tuberculosis. The site was chosen for its view, fresh air, and park-like surround-ings. The design contained many aspects of well-known parks and gardens of the period, including the restored fountain below.

The original sanatori-um building now houses Dane County Human Services.

Lake View Hill Park’s Master Plan empha-

sizes ecological restoration and management, and the Historic Landscape Study documented the human use of the park and the remaining historic and culturally features.

The Dormitory for Help, or the Nurse’s Dorm was de-molished in 2016. The ve-randa portion to the left will be preserved to com-memorate its history.
