FROM THE ROC PRESIDENTBy Marcia Currie

By the time you read this we will be celebrating a Happy New ROC Year. With the election behind us, we will have a new Board and new officers. We will continue to work with the manager to make things even better here.

Of course, there are, and always will be issues to be resolved and plans to be made. Where do you fit in?

As I look around I see more and more people I don’t know. I sure wish everyone wore nametags. That is one of the best ways for us to connect with each other. If you have one, please wear it. If you want to order one, contact June Bodwell at 558 Parkwood Avenue (426-8807).

We are now enjoying the new Hospitality Room. Have you noticed that the mirror over the sink has been repainted to complement the new furnishings? Have you noticed the two paintings of egrets beside the clock on the end wall? Our own Karen Caudill did all of these. We thank her for this wonderful contribution.

Thank you to so many of you who have been so helpful and cooperative during this year of my presidency. I come away loving Harbor Cove even more.

FROM THE MANAGERBy Brian Bender

It’s been a busy start of the year as expected. This is our peak season for residents, new owners and visitors. Here are some items that I would like to mention to all owners and residents.

FROM THE CIVIC PRESIDENTBy Pat Thams 429-4864

February 14th is the 50th Anniversary Party. Couples married to each other for 50 years are welcome to attend. There will be entertainment, food and prizes. If it’s your first time to attend to celebrate your 50 years, it is free. Other couples that have previously attended the luncheon

will be asked to pay $5.00 per couple. Carol Utz and Erika Brown are chairing the event. Tickets will be handed out at Tuesday ticket sales thru February 4th.

February 19th at noon is the annual Volunteer Luncheon. ROC and Civic combine efforts to thank all the volunteers who freely give so much of their time to make Harbor Cove the wonderful community it is. Anyone who has assisted with an activity, stacked or put away chairs at The Civic shows, served donuts or helped in any way is welcome to attend. Pam Pearsall will be handing out free tickets at Tuesday ticket sales.

Civic cards can be purchased at Tuesday ticket sales for $3.00 each or from your plat director whose name, address and phone number are listed on Page 2 of the Harbor Cove bulletin. Civic cards must be shown to buy tickets for any of the 12 Civic sponsored activities including Civic shows, dances, 50th Anniversary Luncheon, Volunteer Luncheon, Newcomer’s Party, etc.

This past year Civic donated $700.00 to the Boat Club to help defray the $1,400.00 cost of installing, maintaining and replacing the Christmas lights in the park and clubhouse and the new Christmas tree for the Rec Hall. The addition of the two dolphins leaping across the waves which was designed and built by Bob McGreevy and Bob Mayer and realistically painted by Vivian Beaudry and the Art Club. What an outstanding addition to the already stunning display in the marina. The lights were absolutely beautiful, and are certainly enjoyed by everyone.

Diane Mattison is selling the pictorial directories at ticket sales on Tuesdays. If you did not have your free picture taken for the directory, you may, for a

limited time purchase one for $10.00.

Next Civic meeting is February 3rd, 7:00 pm in the rec hall. I’d love to see more of you attend, we attempt to keep the meetings to an hour; coffee and rolls are served following the meeting.

FROM THE EDITORBy Sue Nanz

I am trying to put some kind of order to the newsletter. Starting will be listed in order as on Page 2 of the bulletin: Civic, ROC, Brian Bender (our Manager), Boat Club, Ladies Auxiliary, Grandmothers, Leaseholders, Lot Renters and Beautification. Next will be the

ongoing activities followed by those special events for the month. Then I will try to list any events coming up in the months after if I have the information. We’ll end up with Writers Group articles, Birthdays, Civic Sunshine Cards, etc. It might help you if you are looking for a particular event if I try to keep it in that order. If you have a suggestion, though, make sure you let me know.

I am pleased to announce that once again Eileen Fearing has helped me out by making more little dresses for Africa. This is an on-going project started by a company called “Nancy’s Notions” which sells anything having to do with knitting, sewing, needlework, etc. The dresses are made throughout the United States, sent to Nancy’s Notions who sends them on to villages in Africa. The church my husband and I belong to – Community Presbyterian in Englewood – is one of the groups to send these dresses. I mentioned it to Eileen that we were working on the dresses again and she gave me 150 of them! Can you imagine how wonderful for a child who has nothing to receive a little dress so she can now go to school? Here are a couple of pictures of her with the dresses. EILEEN – THANK YOU FOR YOUR WONDERFUL GIFT OF YOUR TIME AND TALENT.

Safety-Please obey the stop signs. I have been guilty myself of “rolling” through the stop signs. Also please watch your speed while driving your cars, especially on Blackburn.

Anything done to the outside of the home needs approval for the most part but please check with the office to make sure. Even TV dishes need approval so always check!

There is no overnight night parking allowed in the common areas without permission from the manager. Also no overnight parking on the street is allowed.

Tired of writing checks to pay your reoccurring Harbor Cove fees? Sign up to have your maintenance fee or rental fee automatically deducted from your checking or savings bank account! Save checks, bank charges and postage. You no longer have to write a check. Your fees will always be paid on time. Never pay any late charges. All you have to do is fill out a form that Emilie will give you and return to office with a voided check.

I want to remind homeowners who rent their homes

seasonally that a criminal background check is required for each person renting your home. The minimum stay is two months. One person needs to be 55 years of age or older while the other has to be at least 40 years old.

You must live in the pet section to allow your renter to bring a pet. The pet must weigh 25 lbs. or less.

Again if anyone has questions or concerns feel free to stop by the office. We are open from 8:30 am - 12:00 noon and 12:30 pm - 4:00 pm.

FROM THE BRIDGEBy Doug Shearer, Commodore 240-5158

This being my first newsletter article as commodore for 2014, my hope is to continue the excellent work of my predecessor, Jim Glowacki. January, as usual, started with a flurry of meetings and activities. January 4th & 5th found members of the boat club, ladies auxiliary and civic gathered

at the marina and rec. hall to remove and pack up all the lights and Christmas decorations. I wish to thank all those who donated their time and energy in accomplishing this task. To name each and everyone would be a monumental task. You know who you are, and I again give all participants of this wonderful and enjoyable activity a HUGE AND HEARTFELT THANK YOU!

January 10th brought the installation of the Boat Club Nautical officers and board of directors. (Pay attention there is a quiz at the end):

Commodore - Doug ShearerVice Commodore - Bob Carr Rear Commodore - Gilles Girard Fleet Captain - Dave Sampson Sectary - Pat Detman Treasurer - John Kushner Past Commodore - Jim Glowacki Board of Directors are Russ Denesha, Larry Tombaugh, Fred Jones, Dan Cox, Mary Murfitt, and Joann Karwecki.

January 19th brought the Blessing of the Fleet, with a large number of boats and friends in attendance. The boat procession was headed by John Yonan, with Pastor Vic Willes, from the Englewood Methodist Church, giving the blessings. Each boat and crew were identified by past commodore, Jack Thams. The ceremony was followed by a sumptuous dinner, prepared and served by the boat clubs own “master chefs,” Tom & Connie Garlie and staff.

January 31st the club members loaded and transported items for our Flea Market, held on Saturday, February 1st. The event is chaired by JoAnn Gall, our “head retailer”. The market was a huge success with buyers going out of the parking field loaded with bargains as if we were giving them away (in some cases we were). Tom and Connie Garlie supervised the preparations and sale of hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage, etc. from the grill on the patio. Thanks to all who worked a very long day and especially those customers who purchased items large and small? You helped make the sale a success.

Upcoming activities will include a Boat trip (February 20th) down the river into the El Jobean area of the Myakka River and upper Charlotte Harbor, led by fleet captain, Dave Sampson. A Golf Cart Treasure Hunt (February 23rd) chaired by Dottie & Duke Duquette, Judy & Doug Shearer, Ed Diorio, and Russ Denesha. After participants raced through the park in “hunt” of items on lists, they will return to the patio for pizza and Karaoke for entertainment. And on February 28th Charlie Torissi and staff will conduct a rousing game of Bunco in the rec. hall.

In finishing you can see that there are a plethora of events, not only for boat club members, but also for the whole community.

We are always looking for new members, so please consider volunteering in any way possible. THANK YOU – till next month….

be given after the final count is given to the caterer on February 26th. The 50-mile rule applies to this event. We urge all members to attend and honor our commodore, Doug Shearer and his wife Judy. We have a wonderful evening planned and look forward to a large turnout. As usually with all Boat Club functions BYOB.

HARBOR COVE BOAT CLUB LADIES AUXILIARYBy Mary Murfitt, President 426-6340

I’m honored and proud to be serving as your President this year. This is my 30th year as a member of the Auxiliary and it “seems like yesterday” that I was introduced. I’ve gotten to know so many wonderful ladies during those years, including the current members that it feels like

a sorority.

The Installation Service in January was impressive, as usual, and the credit goes to Carol Walters who always makes sure everything is in order. Thank you to Mary Jo Huber for serving as escort for the Board members. Barbara Swartztrauber, assisted by Judy Shearer and Jean Lefelhoc, served a delicious luncheon following the meeting.

Two big events are scheduled in February. By the time you read this, you will have already contributed to the Flea Market Bake Sale on February 1st. Thank you, Janet Kramer and Liz Cooley, for organizing the bakers and workers. It’s always a success because

so many of you pitch in to bake and to help on the sales. February 27th brings Elvis to Harbor Cove for a fun evening of entertainment for all residents. JoAnn Gall, Chairman, will be calling on you to help make this a success also.

Last but not least, thank you Joanne Dziuba for demonstrating your dedication to the Auxiliary by serving these past two years, first of Vice-President and then as President. You have contributed so much to Harbor Cove and to our organization. Everyone appreciates and recognizes your dedication.

Your 2014 Officers and Board members are listed in the front of this bulletin and posted in the glass case in the lobby. I encourage you to call any Board member or me with your ideas or suggestions on how to continue to make this an enjoyable and worthwhile organization.

The next General Meeting is February 7th at 11:00 am in the Rec Hall. Please come early to sign in so the meeting can start on time. Coffee and pastry will be ready at 10:30 am.

Don’t forget to wear your name badge!!!

HARBOR COVE BOAT CLUB LADIES AUXILIARY SHOWBy JoAnn Gall 423-7410

Elvis arrives in Harbor Cove, along with Priscilla, on Thursday, February 27th. Harbor Cove residents mark your calendars and come a see a fantastic show from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

You can plan on an entertaining of fun with Bruce Nye, the Elvis Guy. He looks like Elvis. He sounds like Elvis. (Maybe he Really Is Elvis.)

Bruce has entertained audiences with the sights and sounds of the "King of Rock 'n Roll” during the winter months in Florida and New England in the summer.Be ready for a blast from the past, with special effects, and a sing along with Elvis attired in his spectacular costumes. It wouldn't hurt to wear some comfy dancing shoes as they might come in handy during the evening.

HARBOR COVE SINGLESBy Carol Farley 427-1716

The January meeting of the Harbor Cove singles was held January 8th (due to the Holiday) where Lois Haus and Shirley Leicht gave out the schedule of the January events, these included breakfast at IHOP in Venice, lunch at the Salt Water Cafe in Nokomis, dinner at Troyers in Sarasota and a Pizza dinner at the Clubhouse.

Donna Hill and Alice Pothier are making plans for the February activities. Any Harbor Cove singles are encouraged to come to our meeting February 5th at 4:00pm, in the Hospitality Room, to find out what they have in store for us. We always welcome new members, so come give us a try.

FEBRUARY LEASEHOLDER NEWSBy Jim Ringler 423-2426

Final reminder of our 2014 ANNUAL MEETING to be held on February 24th at 7:30 pm in the Harbor Cove Recreation Hall. Please come early to sign in and if you have not paid your transfer fee, you can pay it at this time. If you have acquired your Lease property after the year 2001,

you should pay this fee. We started collecting this fee when we stopped collecting annual Leaseholder dues at that time, and voted to collect a small transfer fee instead. We felt that this would cover the minimal expenses that we have each year. We have not been going door to door to collect this fee; so many of you were missed. And if you do not read this article each month, you may not realize that you should have paid this fee. If you are unsure if you have paid, contact our Treasurer, Dottie Walters (426-3459) and she will look it up for you. If you would like to pay, make your check out to “Lease Holders Association of Harbor Cove Inc.” Please come to this Annual meeting and find out what the Lease Holders are all about. By now all if us snow birds should be back to our little part of Paradise. Did you notice the improvements that have been accomplished? New paint. New furniture and carpet in the Hospitality Room. And the new plantings at the entrance of the community. I have heard many good comments on the Christmas

decorations. You may have noticed that we had very few problems with the electric out front. I would like to give a big THANK YOU to our community manager for working with a different electrician and myself this year to rectify the problem. Also on behalf of the Lease Holders, I would like to thank all of you Harbor Cove residents who turned out to put up and take down all the Xmas Decorations, both inside and out. It was a big job to keep up with the precedence that had been established by our beloved John Walters. I would also like to thank the many other volunteers that make this community the great place that it is to live. The many directors and committee people that it takes to manage this R.O.C. We just finished installing the Civic Association of officers and directors. Take a minute some time to look over the listing of Civic Association directors and committees in this Bulletin and see just how many people are involved to make this association function. Many thanks to all of you. Remember to follow the rules. They are there to benefit all of us. God bless you all.

BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE REPORTBy Sue Fulford 426-0657

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone. Hopefully, any cold weather in Florida will soon be over and we can start planting some new trees and shrubs.

We have begun taking orders for personal house signs again. The

signs are being made by Jim Julian from Riverwalk and are the same shape and lettering of previous signs, but are made with improved material of high quality signboard. We will be taking orders on Tuesday, February 4th and February 18th from 10:00 to 11:00 am during ticket sales. Signs sell for $30.00 due at time of the order. Sorry, we cannot accept Canadian checks.

February’s Home of the Month was awarded to Jim Morris of 371 Trailorama Drive. Jim is a long-time resident of Harbor Cove and can always be seen working on his property to keep it looking nice. Stop by and tell him what a great job he has done.

Congratulations, Jim.

Our next meeting will be Wednesday, February 5th at 9:00 am in the office conference room. Our meetings are always open to new members to join us. We welcome new ideas.

ONGOING ACTIVITIESNEWS AND NOTES FROM THE HARBOR COVE ARTCLUBBy Eileen Thomson 505-717-6439

Did you resolve to take up rock climbing….skydiving…..hang gliding? Here is a much better idea. Come to the North Rec Center and join the artists at the Harbor Cove Art Club for a fun, fulfilling and creative outlet! We areunderway for another great season but it is not too late to join our club.

This month we are showing our work at the North Port Library in the Juliano Room for the entire month. Please come in and see what we have been working on and bring your friends. The Artists’ Reception will be on February 15th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. Now this is open to the public (not just for the artists) and it is a chance to meet and talk to the people who are in the club.

The next big event for us is the arts and crafts show

on the clubhouse patio on Saturday, March 15th. There will again be a raffle for paintings that have been donated by our artists. This year the tickets will be on sale at the show onMarch 15th but if you want to buy them ahead of time, see one of us.

Remember, we have all levels of talent in our group from beginners to accomplished artists. The schedule looks like this:

Monday and Thursday mornings – WatercolorsFriday mornings – Oil painting with Clare Harvey, InstructorWednesday afternoons – Oil painting Open StudioTo be announced – Viewing of Videos for Learning

Our thoughts and warm wishes to Shirley Nepean whose return to Harbor Cove has been delayed because of back issues. Shirley is in charge of our library show and does a great job. She will be working on that from up north but we wish her a speedy recovery.

See you at the North Rec Center, Fine Arts Room?

HARBOR COVE LIBRARY By Elaine Ribaudo 866-1884

If you’ve been in the library recently you’ve seen a number of changes. A special THANK YOU goes to Al Turcott and the woodworkers for the additional shelves and book-drop they did in it. With larger books coming in almost daily more space to accommodate them was really necessary.

Also, if you look around, descriptive categories have been put on the top of shelves to help residents find what they’re looking for.

We’ve also separated a section for DVD’s if people would like to share them. (We no longer keep VCR or cassette tapes.)

The library volunteers hope all these changes have been beneficial to all.

WATCHING OUR WEIGHT By Dottie Duquette 423-4121

We are meeting on Friday morning at 9:00 am in the HR. Please join us if you are in the same rowboat as us. The tide is up and then down, but as soon as we enter the gate of Harbor Cove, it starts to rise. We know by meeting once a week and weighing in that it helps hold the tide

back. It may not go down, but it is good we can

keep it the same or maybe less. We weigh-in, then have a discussion around the table about food and exercise. There are no leaders just friends together in hopes of giving support to one another. From the meeting you can join the pool exercise class at 9:30 am. Hope to see you there.

FLEA MARKET NEWSBy JoAnn Gall 423-7410 and Doug Shearer 240-5158

Today is the day!!!! February 1st. We will probably be in full swing setting up, selling or possibly cleaning up from our annual Boat Club Flea Market as you come to the Club House to pick up your bulletin. A special thank you to ALL who showed up Friday to pack up, move, unpack, and set up items to sell. THEN came early this morning, to sell those items. You are all really appreciated. I am always amazed at how many turn out to help. THANK YOU!!! What

a great community Harbor Cove is and how great her residents are!

It is sad that more people don't get involved because these activities create friendships as it brings new people and 'old' people together. Having been involved with the Flea Market for many years I have seen and experienced this first hand.

Left over items will be donated to Habitat and other charitable agencies.

Again, Special thanks to all you helpers.

MICHIGAN PARTYBy JoAnn Gall 423-7410

As you open and read this month’s bulletin, you will notice that you are only one week away from the annual Michigan Party. Yep, that's right! Next Sunday, February 9th. If you don't have your ticket by now, Tuesday morning, the 4th is the cut off day.

It has always been one of the very best state parties

FEBRUARY CIVIC SHOW IS A “HEADLINER EVENT” By Grant and Sandy Powers 426-4232

It has been two years since a comparable musical act appeared on the Harbor Cove stage. Playing to a sold-out crowd, the Bobby Hendricks Revue “brought down the house”. Their rock and roll mesmerized the audience with an incredible variety of fun, music, and song. Now, the Special Events Committee is proud to bring another big-time act to our stage.

Meet “The Marlins”, four incredible musical brothers,

Gary, Jace, Rick, and Robert. They have been performing together for over twenty-five years. They have appeared at every type of upscale venue to include, conventions, fairs festivals, and corporate events in the US and Canada. Recently they enjoyed great success at Casino Aztar, in Evansville, Indiana, The Resorts Hotel in Atlantic City, N.J. and the Nugget Hotel in Reno, NV. They have appeared over the years with, Lee Greenwood, The Smothers Brothers, Randy Travis, The Association, and many others. In 2012, The Marlins’ original song, “I Believe in America”, was included in the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York City.

The Marlins offer what can be truly called a variety show. It includes all kinds of music including, big band, classical, rock, ragtime, bluegrass, and pop. Songs made popular by names like Glen Miller, Willie Nelson, The Beach Boys, Liberace, Neil Diamond, Elvis, Santana, Andrew Lloyd Webber, and even Tiny Tim, are always heard at a Marlin performance.

Each Marlin brother is a well-trained musician, and not just on one instrument. They play piano, drums, trumpet, guitar, bass, mandolin, synthesizer and flute. Strong solo voices meld into tight harmonies, as the style of music changes. The fact that they are truly brothers is just one more reason that makes The Marlins, unique in the entertainment world.

Tickets for this big-time event are $12. Ticket sales will be Tuesday, January 28th, February 4th and 11th in the Rec Hall at 10:00 am. Please bring your 2014 Civic Card. A 50/50 raffle sale will take place before the performance. Winners announced at intermission. No ticket sales at the door. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Show date: Sunday, Feb. 16th, 2 at 7:00 pm.

expenses are paid, those funds will be donated to the Harbor Cove Memorial Committee to be used to fund their projects.

This golf outing is open to all men and women golfers who own or rent in Harbor Cove. A sign-up sheet is posted in the clubhouse. Payment can be made on Tuesday during ticket sales. The last day of ticket sales will be on Tuesday, March 11th. The cost is $45.00 for each golfer. This includes: green fees, cart, coffee and donuts at the course, lunch on the HC patio plus golf balls, contests, and many prizes. Non-golfing spouses are invited and encouraged to join us for lunch and refreshments on the patio after golf at the cost of $8.00.

When you sign up at the clubhouse, please indicate your handicap, if you have one. If you don’t have a handicap, just indicate what you shoot for 9 or 18 holes. Also, include what golf courses you play. The Golf Committee will determine the teams based on handicaps.

Anyone interested in donating a door prize, making a donation, refreshments or sponsoring a hole in memory of a friend or loved one can do so by contacting a member of the Golf Committee. Donations will also be accepted on Tuesdays during ticket sales. Any little help keeps the cost down and helps the memorial cause.

Please note the location of the golf course for this year. We are playing at Sabal Trace Golf Course.

We hope all Harbor Cove golfers will join us this year for a day of fun and a great way of meeting new friends. Just a reminder, this is a fun tournament only. No PGA or LPGA golfers (Just kidding). See you there.

MEET THE NEIGHBORSBy Betty Falch-Johnson for the Writers Group

John Baldwin lives at 530 Blackburn Blvd. He hails from New Jersey and moved to Florida after his retirement in 1998. He lived briefly in Harbor Isles before purchasing his house on Blackburn Blvd.

His significant other, Josephine, is a snowbird but enjoys the winter season in Harbor Cove. They like to dance and you will probably see them at some of the winter dances. He also has a son named John who lives in Oklahoma.

John grew up in Morrisville, PA. He got his B.A at La Salle College and his master’s degree from Temple University. His life work was that of a research scientist.

John loves poetry and has written and published many of his poems, but also enjoys reading the works of many famous poets. He was named a “Home-town Hero” for his poetry reading at nursing homes and assisted-living facilities in Monmouth County, N.J.

He enjoys living in Harbor Cove because he found it to be such a friendly and welcoming community. He participates in many of the Harbor Cove activities that include the Writers Group, playing Tock, bocce and shuffleboard. His hobby is setting up racecars to run the “NASCAR 2003” computer game, which is fun and time-consuming.

He really enjoys life in Harbor Cove!

DECEMBER POTLUCK “RECIPE OF THE MONTH”By Diane Matteson, Potluck Chairperson 429-8008

At December’s potluck all the dishes were so delicious that no one wanted to pick their favorite so I decided to pick my favorite Holiday Cranberry Relish prepared by Sharon Cox.

Holiday Cranberry Relish……………• 1 Bag of fresh cranberries chopped fine or

run through a food processor• 1 orange peeled and seeded run through food

processor with cranberries• Zest of 1 orange• 1½ cups of sugar• 1 cup of chopped walnuts• 1 small can of crushed pineapple drained• 1 small box black cherry Jell-O• 1 cup boiling water

In a medium-mixing bowl add the cranberry orange mixture, then the orange zest, sugar, nuts and pineapple. Stir the mixture until well blended. (Add more sugar if not sweet enough for you) For a little extra crunch you could add a finely chopped apple to the mix.

Boil water and add the black cherry Jell-O and stir until thoroughly dissolved. Add to the cranberry mixture and stir until well blended, cover and chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours (better overnight).Great with any poultry or pork.

Sharon, thank you for sharing your special recipe with all of us. It certainly was delicious.

ANTS, RUGS AND FACESBy Bethany Nightingale for the Writers Group

When I was a youngster, my best friend was kidnapped. She was five years old and lived to tell. It wasn't much; she only remembered colored leaves and a big tree trunk with what looked to her to be faces in it. Like the clouds that shape themselves into faces so did the bark on the tree trunks. Cloud faces disappear even as we watch them but the tree trunks keep their faces intact.

She remembered thick green grass and said it was like the one in Auntie Polly's living room. There was a small space on the ground where the grass was bare, and little black ants were moving in and out all in a line. They carried bits of food, or bugs, some bugs bigger than the ants themselves.

I still picture her talking about the ants, a thick velvety rug of grass and faces in the trees. She had emerged triumphant from the woods wearing nothing but colored leaves in her matted hair, an emerald pygmy covered with green moss and purple bruises, her memory of the day and night before erased, but for the ants, the rug and the faces in the trees.
