In May 2017, Dr. Mark Mann, assistant professor of urology, (pictured) along with a medical assistant, began seeing general urology patients and looks forward to expanding the number of Urology providers as the practice grows. Traditionally, urology residency programs consisted of two years of general surgery followed by four years of urology training. For the last 10-15 years, the trend has been to shorten this total length of training time to five years by eliminating the second year of training in general surgery. After many years of deliberations, the Department of Urology has applied for and received approval from the Residency Ruling Committee (RRC) to reduce its training program from six to five years.

“Getting residents through five years versus six years will allow residents to get into practice or fellowship sooner,” says Dr. Patrick Shenot, Deputy Chair and Residency Program Director.

Shortening urology residency programs began in the 1990s when the government changed funding of graduate training resulting in hospitals, making it more challenging to fund residency programs at a time when there is a growing shortage of urologists. As a result, urology departments

recognized that shortening total training times would help in mitigating a growing shortage of urologists.

The recent Jefferson decision to reduce the number of residency years is consistent with more than 90% of all other U.S. training programs that are structured to provide one year of general surgery followed by four years of urology. Dr. Shenot is confident that the change will not compromise the quality of the training.

“The quality of our trainees’ experience will be enhanced

by this adjustment,” states Dr. Shenot. “Quality is something that will be managed to make sure our residents are competent in their practice and are more focused on what urology should involve. We’re training smarter rather than longer.”

Residents, who will start in July of 2019, will be the first to participate in the revised five-year program. Due to this change Jefferson will not participate in the 2018 match.

Philanthropy News

Dr. Daniel Verges, PGY6, recently completed his year as the C.R. Bard-Bagley Fellow in Endourology and Minimally Invasive Urologic Oncology. Working alongside Dr. Brent Yanke (also an alumnus of this fellowship) as a senior urology resident, Dr. Verges had the opportunity to further develop his clinical skills and working relationships with Jefferson faculty and residents.

Dr. Verges spent the year heavily focused on hands-on inclusion in cases and patient management, with time allotted for self-directed learning and discovery within minimally invasive urology. Under the tutelage of Drs. Costas Lallas, Edouard Trabulsi and Scott Hubosky, he performed 266 cases, including 65 endourology cases for nephrolithiasis and upper tract urothelial carcinomas; 67 robotic prostatectomies; 33 radical nephrectomies; 34 partial nephrectomies; 4 nephroureterectomies; 18 radical cystectomies; 13 adrenalectomies; and 32 miscellaneous open and robotic cases.

During this tenure, Dr. Verges served as a visiting professor at his alma mater, SUNY Downstate Medical Center Department of Urology, where he spoke about endourology and the fellowship application process. Additionally, he wrote three urologic textbook reviews for Doody’s Review Service; prepared didactic presentations on laparoscopic and robotic surgery for Jefferson’s urology residents; and developed, with Dr. Lallas, the Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals Department of Urology Basic and Advanced Robotic Surgery Training Curricula, which incorporates virtual reality surgical simulation via the RobotiX Mentor platform (3D Systems).

Dr. Verges also had the opportunity to present research on “The Current State of Robotic Surgery Training Curricula in United States Urology Residency Training Programs” at this year’s American Urological Association Annual Meeting, and published on delayed renal artery pseudoaneurysm after robotic partial nephrectomy in the Journal of Robotic Surgery.

In August, Dr. Verges began working with the urology group at St. Luke’s University Health Network in the Lehigh Valley, PA.

Dr. Daniel Verges (4th from left) at the Bard Fellow Breakfast held at the 2017 AUA in Boston with Gary Teague, Director of Sales Operations, and Tim Walsh, Global Director of Marketing from Bard (left), sponsors of the fellowship. In addition to Department of Urology faculty Molly Gerber, Associate Vice President & Chief Strategy Officer from Jefferson’s Office of Institutional Advancement, and Dan’s father, Dr. Leonard Verges, also a urologist, participated.

Dr. Edouard Trabulsi (pictured third from left) recently served as a visiting professor for the Department of Urology at the Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, VA. Dr. Trabulsi had the opportunity to address the residents and fellows, discussing challenging oncologic cases. He spoke on innovative research originating at Jefferson, “VPAC PET imaging for Assessment of Urologic Malignancy,” as well as “Postoperative Radiotherapy after Prostatectomy and the use of Genomics.” He also had the opportunity to speak at the Tidewater Urological Association, discussing the topic of “Enhanced Ultrasound Modalities for Prostate Cancer Detection.”

Dr. Mark Mann (pictured left with radio host Bob Burns) was a special guest on the Bob Burns and Don Williams Talk Show on Radio 1400AM this past spring. Dr. Mann discussed the urology program at Jefferson, LUTS, prostate cancer survivorship and kidney stones, among other topics. He also answered questions from callers who phoned in to the program.

Department News

Jefferson Urology Network News

Department of Urology Now Hospital BasedOn June 28, 2017, the Department of Urology transitioned to become a hospital-based department following the trend of most other JUP/SKMC-based departments. This administrative change allows more of the extensive TJUH System resources to be available to patients in the Urology outpatient setting and affords participation in the government 340B program, which enables covered entities to stretch scarce federal resources as far as possible, reaching more eligible patients and providing more comprehensive services. This was a tremendous effort spearheaded by Marlene Vallett and Scott Bowes with incredible support from the department’s 833 outpatient staff and the TJUH conversion team. In recognition for all of the hard work to make this happen, the Department said, “Thank You” to its staff and conversion team members with a “340B Luncheon.” TJUH President Rich Webster also stopped by to express his thanks. Pictured are Dr. Scott Hubosky and Marlene Vallett.

Service Awards

Several faculty and staff members celebrated anniversaries with Thomas Jefferson University over the past year. They included Barbara Devine (30 years), Dr. Pat Shenot (25 years), Denise Tropea (20 years), Dr. Jeanne Llenado (15 years) and Dr. Scott Hubosky (10 years). The Jefferson Urology Network was established in 2014 to create strategic alignments through clinical affiliations with community specialty Urology practices in the Delaware Valley. The program, part of other Jefferson Specialty Network programs, provides seamless access to tertiary and quaternary care for complex care and treatment for community-based specialists. In addition to increased access for community Urologists to Jefferson educational programs, the network helps facilitate patient care coordination between Jefferson

Urology and community urology practices. Current members of our Urology Network include practices in Scranton and Pennsville, as well as at the Aria Jefferson Health locations.

Congratulations to our Jefferson Urology Network partner Dr. Cadence Kim (Aria) on her election as President of the Philadelphia County Medical Society.
