PrESiDENt’S MESSaGE

Dear Members,

Firstly, let me wish all of you a Happy New Year.

At the last Members’ Luncheon and Enjoy Orchid! Day on 20 November 2010, many of you participated in the activities that were organised for you. It was heartening to see such a great turnout and I thank you for your keen involvement in the Club’s events. I hope you will continue to join in more of such members’ activities in the future and enjoy Orchid with your family and friends.

With such encouraging response from our members, the Management will endeavour to bring you more events catered to your interests and needs in 2011. An exciting lineup of events is already in the pipeline. Do keep a look-out for movie screenings for the whole family, monthly pool events like friendly swimming competitions and water carnivals, and activities to keep you fit such as tennis competitions and bi-monthly gym challenges.

As we step into the new year, Management’s main focus is to increase traffic to the Club and improve utilisation of our facilities. A few initiatives are in place to achieve this, such as bringing in new tenants to make the Club a more vibrant and family-oriented place. The labour movement has been very successful in creating the Downtown East. We hope to create Uptown North in this neighbourhood with facilities for recreation and food and beverage. I seek your help in this.

This is, after all, a Club meant for you to patronise. Activities are organised for you to participate. Since you enjoy preferential members’ rates here at OCC, do come more often to make full use of the excellent facilities that have been specially built for you.

As you know, the cost of running these facilities and the Club operations is covered by the monthly subscriptions. The Management has tried their best to set it at a reasonable fee. In the past, we have been very careful not to increase our monthly fees rapidly. It looks as if this has now become very difficult.

The two new integrated resorts have robbed us of a substantial portion of our Jackpot Room takings and we are not alone in this. Some clubs have lost as much as 60% of their original revenue. We have our gross takings dropped by between 20% and 25% and this is very significant in our financial position.

I am letting you know in advance that we have no choice but to impose an increase of our monthly subscription soon to keep pace with market rates. To make it easier for our members we will try to increase this by small increments rather than in one lump sum. More details will be provided later. Meanwhile, you are aware that with effect from 1 April 2011, our golf club membership transfer fee will be increased to $20,000 to be in line with other similar clubs.

Finally, I wish to say that our General Manager Mr Choo Wee Khiang who was seconded to us has completed his term at OCC on 31 December 2010. On behalf of the General Committee and Management, I wish to thank him for all the hard work that he has put in to position OCC to what it is today. A new General Manager should be on board soon. In between this, I can assure you that it is work and service as per normal.

Many improvements have been made and much more lies ahead. As we look forward to a year of fresh starts, I wish you and your loved ones a happy and prosperous Lunar New Year in advance.

Members were greeted with several fringe activities before the luncheon began on 20 November 2010. They immersed themselves gleefully in the timeless Chinese calligraphy, artistic silhouette cutting, caricature drawing and some even had their fortunes read, while awaiting for the luncheon to commence.

President Mr Lim Jit Poh gave his welcome address and updated members on the up-and-coming changes at the club. At the end of Mr Lim’s address, the feast began! Members were treated to a sumptuous array of delicacies from Vanda Terrace, Peach Garden and Kitagawa Japanese Restaurant. It was truly a display to satisfy everyone's palate.

Dan Thomson continued to delight the audience with his slick impersonations of Elvis Presley and Kermit the Frog. Familiar tunes, in English and even Hokkien, resonated across the Grand Ballroom which was already filled with cheer as members mingled with each other.

The luncheon eventually came to an end, but there was still a host of activities lined up across the club for members to proceed on to Enjoy Orchid!

ENJOY OrCHiD!20 NOvEMBER 2010

The day kicked off with the Family Treasure Hunt and seven families of three geared up early in the morning for this challenge. They had to complete five tasks at various locations across the club. It was truly a match of wits and brawn as teams raced around the club and against the clock to complete all the stations. The challenge ended with smiles on everyone’s faces and they were all rewarded with prizes; everyone’s a winner just by being a part of it!

Sculpture Square had trained instructors over to conduct various kids’ art & craft activities. Kids got down to work with clay, wire, sand and paper to make lovely Christmas decorations. Kids were so delighted with their art work that even the adults got interested.

ACT 3 Theatrics entertained both kids and their parents with two performances of ‘Taro, the Dragon Boy’. Founder-Director of ACT 3 Theatrics, R Chandran, the storyteller with 10 different character

voices, from that of a young girl to a fearsome ogre, brought to life the Japanese folktale of Taro and his quest for his mother, who has turned into a dragon. Audience saw the story come to life through the magic and skills of the storyteller’s voice, masks, mime and movement. Do keep a look-out for the child’s enrichment programme, ‘Readers’ Theatre’ with ACT 3 Theatrics in January 2011.

Kids also got to enjoy the various water activities at the pool. They played games at the fun pool and raced against each other at the pool obstacle course. They were also treated to yummy burgers and popcorn by the pool – something to keep their energy level up!

The afternoon continued with 30 bowling enthusiasts of all ages gathering at Orchid Bowl for the Fun Bowl activity. This friendly game ended with three happy prize winners and friends enjoying time together at Orchid Country Club.

All the time spent practising at the driving range finally paid off as successful challengers walked away with prizes such as a Taylormade Putter, adidas gift packs and FairPrice Vouchers! Our gym goers sweated it out at the Gym Challenges as well, and pit against each other for the title of the Fitness Champ!

As the sun began to set, our anglers' spirit began to lift as we set off into the golf course for a Night of Fishing @ the Green. Within minutes of casting their fishing lines, anglers were adrenalised as the

first catch come reeling in. Family members who were still laying out their picnic mats stopped in amazement of the speed. Everyone was fired up and even more determined to make the next catch. It was an evening to remember as friends and family enjoyed the serenity of the golf course and each others' company at the green and under the stars. The night ended with Mr Steven Lim walking away with the top prize of a Panasonic LCD TV!

Over 90 golfers took part in this year’s Captain’s & Lady Captain’s Cup, held on 27 November. It was a friendly competition among members, in which top spots in the women’s and men’s divisions were taken by Ms Cathleen Wong and Mr Giam Jia Hao respectively. Dinner was held at the Sapphire Suite, where golfers wound down and relaxed with friends. Winners for the Club Championship and Matchplay for 2010 were also announced during the prize presentation, and it was certainly a night where OCC’s junior members took top honours. Kudos to our young golfers! The night was topped off with a lucky draw as some members walked with prizes, making it a night to remember.

wHat tHE Law DOESN’t tELL YOu aBOut PLaNNiNG a wiLLThe mention of Wills conjures up images of death. Superstitions notwithstanding, Wills are a useful part of life. But much misconception prevails about what a Will can and cannot do. Some believe that making a Will exempts them from estate expenses or that joint property can be distributed under a Will. Making a Will is not just for the rich or the old. When an adult acquires some assets, e.g., a house, bank account, shares etc., he should consider making a Will as part of his overall estate plan. In the absence of a Will, one’s estate may well end up in the wrong hands, or worse be entirely dissipated by expenses. To educate the public on the importance of making Wills, and to dispel any misconceptions, this talk aims at raising awareness of the subject. It covers the legal and practical aspects of making a Will and how it protects your estate in more ways than you now know and the important factors one takes into account before penning a Will.

ROMANtiCPREDICTIONS

ratRats are charming, elegant and clever. They can be a bit gossipy and prone to being distracted. They’re also thrifty and very good with handling money. Family and close friends

are exceptionally important to them. The Rat is charming beyond words and throughout his undoubtedly long life he will always be popular and will have many friends.

On the love and romance side of life, there could be cause for celebration during the year in the form of an engagement, wedding or birth. July, August and December and January will be particularly special months. The Rat should avoid being too emotional this year, or he or she may be hurt.

Good relationship with: Rat, Dragon, MonkeyConflicts with: Horse, Rabbit, Ram

Ox Sturdy, earthy, and no-nonsense. Affectionate and easy-going, the Ox can show a fierce temper when agitated. He is neat, tidy, quiet and studious, with a great love of his home.

Music can be a great love. Family life and a loving partner are high on the Ox’s priorities. A wonderful and loyal friend.

Romance is highlighted in a very special way this year, with unattached Oxen finding themselves in exactly the right place at the right time to meet someone very special. For those in a relationship, this will strengthen and grow. June, July and October are wonderful months for love and romance. Friendship will be important during 2011. Whether the Ox is looking for new friends or drawing on friendships he already has, it’s important that he stays socially active. March, August and December will be particularly busy socially. The Ox must be careful not to be emotional this year, else you may get hurt on relationship issues.

Good relationship with: Rat, Rabbit, MonkeyConflicts with: Horse, Dragon, Ram

tiGEr Magnetic, passionate and grand! Nothing the Tiger does goes unnoticed! Indecisiveness and stubbornness can mar the sparkle of the Tiger personality. Generous on one hand, and mean

on the other, it’s sometimes difficult to know where one stands with the Tiger. Flexible, honest and truly entertaining, one has a friend for life with a Tiger.

Romantic matters will take centrestage with many born under this sign deciding either to get married or to take the relationship to the next level. Single Tigers are expected to meet a partner within the

period of June to September. If faced with recent personal trials and tribulations, 2011 will prove to be a much brighter year.

Good relationship with: Horse, Dog, Dragon Conflicts with: Snake, Ox, Monkey, Rabbit

raBBit Warm and affectionate. Mysterious and a great party-giver and host, the Rabbit enjoys being the centre of attention once in a while. The Rabbit is occasionally over-cautious and can

be a bit boring. He is also one of the luckiest signs in the Chinese Astrology chart.

Socially, August, September and December will be hectic! Single Rabbits could meet their significant other this year and the relationship could move very fast. Those with partners will find their relationship become more serious and important. He or she must also remember to call on friends and loved ones for support and advice during any challenging times.

Good relationship with: Ram, Dog, Dragon, Pig Conflicts with: Rooster, Rat, Tiger

DraGON Assertive, energetic and talented. On the other hand, the Dragon has a tendency to be condescending and tactless without realising it. In the Chinese Zodiac, they are born under

the sign of luck. They generally enjoy robust health and tend to be very successful in their endeavours.

Romance is beautifully starred with opportunities to meet new people all through the year but particularly during April, June, September and December. On the whole, this will be a positive and happy year for Dragons. Hobbies and talents should be pursued and enjoyed as they will provide great pleasure and relaxation during 2011 and could lead to other interesting opportunities.

Good relationship with: Rat, Rooster, Monkey Conflicts with: Tiger, Ox, Dog

SNaKE Intelligent and highly intuitive. He makes an amusing and romantic friend with a definite flirtatious streak. When challenged or criticised he can appear a sore loser. The

Snake is very lucky with money and is fond of the odd bet or two. He is quick-witted and enjoys reading, music and on occasion, the paranormal side of life.

Romance and friendship will be superb in 2011 and he will get much enjoyment from social gatherings, especially ones connected with

work. A word of warning for all Snakes – there is the possibility of a lapse in judgement or a piece of harmful gossip – this could lead to awkwardness. Tread carefully!

Good relationship with: Rooster, Ox Conflicts with: Tiger, Snake, Pig

HOrSE Fun, charming and attractive. They love parties and crowds and being the centre of attention. They can also be egotistical, hotheaded and impatient. The Horse is a

considerate and protective friend and partner and when in his company, excitement is always just around the corner.

Socially, as always, the Horse will be busy, with May to September and December being full of fun opportunities with friends. Attached Horses will fare better than single ones in 2011. If a new romance is on horizon, the Horse would be well advised to relax and let the relationship develop slowly and without rushing. March, September and October are prime months for finding someone special.

Good relationship with: Ram, Tiger, Dog Conflicts with: Rat, Monkey, Ox, Horse

raM Graceful and optimistic, kind and easygoing. But they can also be petulant and discontented and most likely to throw the towel in at the beginning of a problem. They can be charming

without revealing their true feelings. The Ram is very talented and imaginative and can turn his hand to most creative pursuits.

The support and friendship of others will be very important to him this year and give him the encouragement and confidence he needs. The single Ram will find 2011 an excellent and thrilling year for romance and those who already have a partner may be thinking of taking it to a more serious level. February, August and September will most likely present opportunities for romantic encounters, but the whole year will bring happy social occasions.

Good relationship with: Rabbit, Horse, Pig Conflicts with: Rat, Ox, Dog

MONKEY The Monkey is playful, lively, fun and a quick thinker. They get bored very easily and find it hard to settle down to doing any one thing. The Monkey can also be vain and offhand.

They are ambitious and usually very good with investing money. Their quick wit and wonderful sense of humour make them great party guests. The Monkey’s life will never be dull and predictable!

Friends and family will provide many happy and memorable occasions during 2011 and there may be one or two special celebrations. March to May and December will be very active socially for most Monkeys. For single Monkeys, there should be quite a few opportunities to meet someone special through outings with friends or at work. In addition, trips to art exhibitions, museums or other cultural venues will prove delightful for many Monkeys.

Good relationship with: Dragon, Rat Conflicts with: Tiger, Horse

rOOStEr The Rooster is always popular, extravagant and creative. They can be brutally honest and generally like being showered with attention. They are wonderfully loyal friends and also give advice freely – whether they are asked for

it or not! Family means the world to the Rooster and they are one of the most loyal signs in the Chinese zodiac.

On the social and romantic side of life, this will be a much more settled and quiet year, which will be to many a Rooster’s liking. March, July and August look to be the most active on the social scene. A word of warning though – the Rooster must take care to temper his words with friends and not be too harsh. A quarrel or end of a close relationship could result.

Good relationship with: Ox, Snake, Dragon Conflicts with: Rabbit, Dog, Rooster

DOG The Dog is a wonderfully hard worker, a perfectionist and someone who loves the small details. He is also a bit anti-social, pessimistic and stubborn. They are one of the most honest and trustworthy signs of the Chinese zodiac

and will always go to bat for a worthy cause. The Dog is a fantastic listener and his advice is usually very intuitive.

The main emphasis will be on their personal life. If attached, the Dog will find their relationship grow and become much more meaningful on all levels. Single Dogs will be particularly lucky in finding someone very special. All social occasions will carry the possibility of meeting someone new, with April, June, August and December being the busiest months on their social calendar.

Good relationship with: Tiger, Rabbit, Horse Conflicts with: Dragon, Ram, Rooster

PiG The Pig is an innocent, sweet and lovable personality. They can also be given to melancholy and be over-sensitive. The Pig loves the company of others, and adores parties, gossips and chit-chats. They are

highly intelligent, but prefer to keep this side of their nature under wraps. The Pig does not care that much for money, but is one of the Chinese zodiac signs that is very lucky.

The Pig loves to have fun and socialise with family and friends and on this front, the Year of the Rabbit will not disappoint him! He may not have been the life of the party recently, but in 2011 his social network will greatly increase with April, May, July and October being the most enjoyable months. Single Pigs could very well meet a romantic partner through a friend or at a family gathering. The Pig parties hard and works hard and in the Year of the Rabbit he will be bringing in the rewards for all his hard work.

Good relationship with: Rabbit, Ram Conflicts with: Snake, Monkey
