Current Approach
• All “tritium wetted components” are located inside a glovebox – Why
• Explosion Prevention – Ar/N2 filled • Fire Prevention - Ar/N2 filled • Tritium Leak/Spill Mitigation • Tritium Leak/Spill Recapture – Strippers
• Provides access to components for maintenance

Current Approach
• Implications – Large glass surface area – Leads to large number of gloves installed over time – Large equipment replacement difficult
• Usually requires Open Glovebox Maintenance • Preparation very time consuming
– Hut Construction – Fire Suppression Issues
• Compensatory measures required for fire/explosion hazard • Compensatory measures required for worker hazard • Re-establishing confinement time consuming • Overall very time and labor consuming • SRS OGMs run several weeks to several months in duration.

Current Approach
• Implications (cont’d) – Stripping glovebox atmosphere using catalytic oxidation is not
efficient • Majority of hydrogen loading is from permeation of humidity into the glovebox.
– Gloves – Gaskets
• Typically tritium concentration less than 0.1% tritium, balance protium. • Through-put required for isotope separation to reclaim this tritium has to be
orders of magnitude larger than necessary. – Energy intensive – Space consuming – Increases Operational/Maintenance demand

Glovebox Boundary Valves, Instruments and Fittings
Electrical Instrument Connector
• Locate components which require periodic replacement in easily removable “modules.”

Modularization Benefits
• Reduces water processing – Significantly reduces glovebox volume/surface area – Reduces glass/gaskets – Reduces gloves – Reduces “water” loading
• Reduces maintenance cost – Complicated Open Glovebox Maintenance eliminated
• OGM can add several hundred thousand dollars to work cost
• Reduces maintenance duration

Estimated Savings
• Converting from current approach to modularization estimated to result in: – 30% less glovebox volume. – 50% less glass/glove surface area.
• Floor space requirements will be reduced as well. • Estimate large equipment/ limited life component maintenance
cost reduction of 30%. • Study currently being performed for the SRS Tritium Facility
to validate these estimates.
