CHOOSING BETWEEN CHLORINE & BROMINEThe BENEFIT TO CHLORINE is that it begins sanitizing and reaches a proper ppm reading almost immediately. The downsides to Chlorine are you need to add a little every other day to maintain a proper ppm level or it will give off a scent. It also is not as effective as Bromine in high water temperatures making it more preferred for swimming pools. It’s also not recommended in the high pH range, compelling you to keep your pH level between 6.8 and 7.0.

The BENEFITS TO BROMINE TABLETS is that it requires less maintenance allowing you to go up 1 to 2 weeks without adding more tablets. It works well in high water temperatures and is also effective over a wider pH range, so if your pH fluctuates your sanitizer is still working. The downside to bromine tablets is that they are slow dissolving and take several days to begin sanitizing. For immediate activation you must add both Brom Bank and Spa Activator.

Raising Calcium/HardnessThe hardness of your water is determined by the calcium level. If the calcium is too high, it could cause scaling. If it’s too low, it could cause foaming and cloudy water. Calcium levels in hot tubs should be maintained between 150 – 250 ppm. Test your water’s hardness level to determine amount of Liquid Calcium to add. To raise the Hardness level of your water just 45 ppm higher add 3 oz of Liquid Calcium for every 300 gallons (in a 1200-gallon swim spa add 12 ounces). Allow filtration pump to run for 30 minutes and then retest and add more if necessary.

NOTE: In hot water you can only add 3 oz every 30 minutes but in cold water you can add up to 12 oz. Wait at least one hour, retest and add more if necessary.

RECOMMENDATION: Sanitizer Test Strips provide a hardness reading but for those that need to raise their Calcium level we recommend using Hardness Test Strips more accurate results.

Scaling is a precipitation that forms on internal spa components along with the spa shell (like barnacles). The longer it remains on the spa surface the more difficult it is to remove and this only results from poor water maintenance and it is not covered by any spa manufacturer’s warranty. It is caused by high mineral content in your fill water or high levels of pH or Calcium. Products like Stain & Scale and Protection Plus are protection from scaling.

Healthy sanitized water properly balanced can still become cloudy. To keep it crystal clear requires the use of either Clarifiers or Natural Enzyme products.

Clarifiers are synthetic coagulates that collect and bind small particles into a larger mass so that they can be captured in the filter cartridge. Clarifiers are less expensive, but they can create a film on the shell above the water line along with on your filter cartridge. Natural Enzymes destroycontaminants helping to keep your water clear while helping to prevent added maintenance.

There are many causes; household products (laundry soap residue on bathing suits, deodorant, body lotions, hair products etc.) are a nuisance but they won’t harm you or your hot tub. But if the cause is low sanitizer or hardness levels, a high pH level, or dirty filter cartridges, then any of these could cause harm to you or your hot tub and immediate correction should be taken.

No, overuse of either product will not harm your spa or water chemistry.

If your fill water has naturally high levels of pH, hardness, or mineral content it is recommended that each time you fill your spa add 16 oz. of SpaEase Stain & Scale before adding any sanitizer. Then each week add 2 oz. of SpaEase Protection Plus. It is best to remove and clean your filters 24 hours after adding 16 oz. of Stain & Scale.
