2018

A Note From the Principal…

Dear DHS Families:

Hearts across America are mourning the loss of 17 students in Parkland, Florida. Tragedies such as

this continue to remind us why we keep student safety as a top priority at DHS. The past couple of

weeks, I have had the opportunity to meet with groups of student leaders who are passionate about

the importance of school safety. The students are focused on ways to show the Floridian families and

Stoneman Douglas High School that Davison High School cares and supports all of them during this

difficult time. Their plans include developing meaningful activities with/for their classmates to express

their passion for school safety. Today’s world is so much different than when we grew up. It was

nothing to be playing outside with neighbors and friends all day long and into the evening. We rode

our bikes across town to the swimming pool, a friend’s house, the DQ or the local diner any time of

day. We did not second guess our safety. Today, we have to remain vigilant everywhere we go for

everyone’s safety.

I wanted to reassure you that Davison Community Schools and DHS take school safety very

seriously. Below are some of the safety activities and processes in place without divulging too much

detail that would jeopardize our safety protocols.

Davison High School moved to one point of entry a few years ago.

DHS has a trained, retired law enforcement officer that staffs the Welcome Desk placed at

our single point of entry.

There are three full time security staff members at DHS.

Regular drills are conducted to prepare students to appropriately respond in the event of a

real emergency. They are not announced ahead of time so it simulates as close as possible to

the real deal.

Davison Schools works very closely with local law enforcement from Davison Township,

Davison City and Richfield Township. This relationship is very unique to our community. What a

blessing that we can work so closely together for the safety and well being of our students and

the greater Davison community.

Camera footage is recorded both inside and outside 24/7.

Many of the staff have participated in active shooter training. A few months ago, the district

committed to further intensified training for staff using a new protocol called ALICE training. This

training will occur within the next few weeks.

Students are instructed to never open a locked door for anyone.

Students are asked to not wear hats or hoods as it makes it very difficult to identify the

students.

Ironically, the most important system of security is our students and staff. If someone hears a

possible threat, whether it is bullying, a physical threat, a possible fight, or there is a concern about

someone, a report is made to staff and/or administration. I am grateful that our students report

these concerns to an adult in the building. Please encourage your child to report anything of concern.

As parents, we are a phone call or email away and always appreciate information you bring to us.

We all are grieving at the loss of these southern high school students. Let’s continue

to work together - school and community - to ensure our students and our community

are the safest they can possibly be. Your child means the world to us!

Respectfully,

Sue A. Kenkel
