1 A Note From Pastor Mark: This month I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for all you do for our church and school. This is a great place because you give. Yes, you give money, and that’s important - but that’s only a symptom of who you are. You give time and talent. You volunteer. You make things run in our church and school. You give support and encouragement to each other and to our staff. You give smiles and friendship to others. You give prayers and love and encouragement to those who are hurting. This is a church and school full of people who give. I’ve noticed that there are two types of people in the world – people who give and people who hoard. “One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.” Proverbs 11:24. The givers give from everything God has given them, not just money. People who hoard do so not just with money but everything else. Today I thank you for being a giver of everything God has given you. As the pledge phase of the Moving Forward campaign draws to a close this month, I want to keep in mind that this campaign isn’t and has never been about the money. It’s about the Vision of the future of our church and school. It’s about Love: God’s love for us, our love for God, our love for each other and our love for the world. We want our church and school to be all about this love. We give love, friendship, friendliness, and inclusion. We give because people need these things. We give because it opens the door to people hearing the Gospel of Jesus Christ. We give because He told us to. We give because we love. The Moving Forward campaign will be done collecting pledges in a few weeks, but it will continue for three years as we give to fulfill those pledges. It will continue for years more as we continue to pursue our Vision of more love. And therefore I am very thankful for all of you and all you give to God and His work at St. Peter. The result is that people do come here and they do hear the Gospel. They do hear what Jesus Christ has done for them. They do come to saving faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. This saving faith is a gift of God alone, and yet, when we give to others we participate in the giving of that gift. There is no greater gift. A Note From Pastor Mark:

This month I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for all

you do for our church and school. This is a great place because you give.

Yes, you give money, and that’s important - but that’s only a symptom of

who you are. You give time and talent. You volunteer. You make things run

in our church and school. You give support and encouragement to each other

and to our staff. You give smiles and friendship to others. You give prayers

and love and encouragement to those who are hurting. This is a church and

school full of people who give. I’ve noticed that there are two types of

people in the world – people who give and people who hoard. “One person

gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to

poverty.” Proverbs 11:24. The givers give from everything God has given

them, not just money. People who hoard do so not just with money but

everything else. Today I thank you for being a giver of everything God has

given you.

As the pledge phase of the Moving Forward campaign draws to a close this month, I want to

keep in mind that this campaign isn’t and has never been about the money. It’s about the

Vision of the future of our church and school. It’s about Love: God’s love for us, our love for

God, our love for each other and our love for the world. We want our church and school to

be all about this love. We give love, friendship, friendliness, and inclusion. We give because

people need these things. We give because it opens the door to people hearing the Gospel of

Jesus Christ. We give because He told us to. We give because we love. The Moving Forward

campaign will be done collecting pledges in a few weeks, but it will continue for three years

as we give to fulfill those pledges. It will continue for years more as we continue to pursue

our Vision of more love.

And therefore I am very thankful for all of you and all you give to God and His work at St. Peter. The result is that

people do come here and they do hear the Gospel. They do hear what Jesus Christ has done for them. They do come

to saving faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. This saving faith is a gift of God alone, and yet, when we give to

Annual Advent by Candlelight – Ladies, consider hosting a table or joining one of our Christian Growth Board

tables for this free event on Tuesday, December 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. The message this year will

be “Where’s your Christmas Spirit” by speaker Karen Dancey.

More information is located on the Christian Growth bulletin board in the Narthex

or call Robin Schulz at (586) 907-3160.

From Bach and Mozart to Glenn Miller, Leroy Anderson, Elvis and the Trans-Siberian

Orchestra, the Capital City Ringers continually amaze audiences with their flashy style

and musical diversity. Comments such as, "I never knew hand bells could do that!" and

"Wow!" are often heard after CCR's performances. Drums, bass guitar and keyboards add

to the rich, musical texture of hand bells and chimes.

Be sure to attend this concert to see (and hear) mid-Michigan's premiere hand bell

ensemble for yourself!

The Capital City Ringers are returning to St. Peter Lutheran Church on Sunday, December 9. This will be their 3rd

appearance here. If you have not been able to attend one of their previous concerts, you don't want to miss this one!

Their performance, A Classical Christmas, includes songs such as: We Three Kings, Blue Christmas, Sing We All

Noel, Up on the House Top, Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24) and Leroy Andersons Sleigh Ride to name only a few.

The concert begins at 4:00 p.m.

You will have the opportunity to purchase their CD's/DVD's.

Refreshments will be served after the concert.

This is a great way to prepare your hearts for the birth of Christ.

Add this special event to your calendar!

I was down in our basement the other day unpacking some of the many boxes left to unpack. You know how it is

when you move; it seems like you never finish unpacking. While looking through the boxes, I ran across a file

folder marked “Mark’s Call Papers”. In it were several official documents. I looked at the date on the papers and

thought that can’t be right. What happened? Did I fall asleep? Where did three hundred and sixty five days ago?

As I glanced at the documents my mind went back to a sunny day in November when

Cherrie and I walked through the doors of St. Peter together. It was a year ago that Cherrie

and I answered the call to come to St. Peter. For us, the time has flown by. It has been one

blessing after another. The people and staff of this church are so welcoming and patient.

From the members of the congregation, teachers, custodians, pre-school staff, students,

school staff to the church staff, you have made us feel at home here. It is a joy to serve here

at St. Peter. I remember how I felt that first day: excited and a little bit apprehensive at what

it would be like serving here. Well any apprehension is gone but the excitement has not.

Cherrie and I feel it is a real blessing that God has called us here. It is great to be at a church

and school that celebrates its past and looks forward to the future. We too look forward to

the future here and are excited to be a part of it. Philippians 1:2-4 “Grace and peace to you from God our Father

and the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always

pray with joy.”

~God Bless You, Cherrie and Pastor Mark Arendell

GriefShare: Our GriefShare ministry continues, and this cycle will end just before Christmas. However, you may

join at any time, the time when you are ready to begin that journey from Mourning to Joy. We have two identical

sessions weekly, one on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. and the other on Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m. Both meet in

the Small Conference Room in the Church Office wing.

To register or for more information, please contact Linda Dunklau at (586) 247-5329.

Stephen Ministry: The upcoming holiday season can bring additional stress on your schedule, your budget, and

family dynamics. If you want someone to just act as a sounding board as you work through troublesome thoughts, take

advantage of a Stephen Minister who will confidentially listen to you and pray with you. If such a brother or sister

can help you through the holidays, contact Roy Fagg at (586) 228-9633 or Linda Dunklau at (586) 247-5329.

SURVIVING THE HOLIDAYS Can you believe it? Thanksgiving is this month! Thanksgiving Day and the

Christmas holidays next month can be hard to navigate if there’s a special someone missing from the table. Whether

your loss was five months ago or fifteen years ago, the hurt can still be very real for you. Join us for a special

presentation of Surviving the Holidays, a practical guide for not just “surviving,” but maybe even “thriving” during

the holiday season. After the video there will be ample time for discussion and sharing. This presentation will be held

two times. Sunday, November 18 at 2:00 p.m. and on Monday, December 10 at 7:00 p.m. Both meetings will be held

in the Small Conference Room accessed by entering through Door 28. Please think about attending to be built up and

encouraged to celebrate the holidays in a new way. For more information, call Linda Dunklau at (586) 247-5329.

ATTENTION STEPHEN MINISTERS: We will be meeting on Monday, November 12, at 6:30 p.m. in the Small

Conference Room. Our featured speaker will be our own Stephen Minister, Lynn McKinley, who will share with us a

personality profile and how that can impact how we relate to others and how they might respond to us. This is sure to

be an eye-opening experience from which we all can gain significant insights.

Our 60+ group will meet on Tuesdays, November 6 and November 20 at 11:00 a.m.

Bring your lunch and enjoy a few hands of Pinochle and/or Euchre. You don’t have to be “60+” to

join us. Anyone who enjoys playing cards and fellowship with others is welcome!

Due to the elections, please use Door #28 for November 6. Please use Door #1 for November 20.

Monday Worship & Fellowship: This gathering is for you if you have difficulty attending a weekend worship

service due to limited mobility. A friend, family member, or caregiver is welcome to accompany you. The service is

held in the Fellowship Hall and followed by a time of fellowship shared around a delicious lunch. A free will offering

is accepted. Help is available for parking and entering the building. Please enter through Door #1. As the second

Monday approaches, please call the Church Office at (586) 781-3434 by the previous Thursday to reserve your spot

for the meal. Our next Monday Worship & Fellowship will be November 12.

As the intensity of human needs increases worldwide, the request for the quilts and kits St. Peter ladies assemble is

also on the rise. Today and every day, Women’s Ministry and Lutheran Women’s Missionary League partners with

Lutheran World Relief to help give families everywhere a helping hand, a sign of comfort and hope for

the future. Our St. Peter congregation helps supply items which are donated throughout the year for the

various kits and sew the many quilts which are boxed up and shipped out to the impoverished and dev-

astated areas of the world each October. By working on these quilt and kit projects, St. Peter builds

community within our congregation, serves as a faith witness to our community and brings us closer to distant

communities that we are likely never to visit but can positively affect.

On behalf of the St. Peter Women’s Ministry and LWML, we wish to express our sincere thanks for helping us with

these projects each year whether by donating items needed or helping put the quilts and kits together. We also want to

thank the children who attended Vacation Bible School, as they also donated many items for the School Kits.

We were able to ship 200+ quilts, 91 School Kits, 43 Baby Care Kits, and 188 Wellness Kits along with the small

bars of soap that were collected this year.

In 2017 there were 576,669 beneficiaries of these items which were in 21 countries. What a testimony of our kindness

and love to our community and our world! God bless you for the mission work you do. ~St. Peter Women’s Ministry

LGBT Family and Friends Support Group: This group is for people who have a family member or close friend

who is LGBT. We help each other to love without compromising God’s Word. If you have been thinking about

attending one of the Family and Friends of LGBT support group meetings, please join us. We meet the third

Thursday of every month at 7:30 p.m. in the Small Conference Room.

Did You Know?

Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood.

More than 41,000 blood donations are needed every day.

A total of 30 million blood components are transfused each year in the U.S.

The average red blood cell transfusion is approximately 3 pints.

The blood type most often requested by hospitals is Type O.

The blood used in an emergency is already on the shelves before the event occurs.

Sickle cell patients can require frequent blood transfusions throughout their lives.

More than 1.6 million people were diagnosed with cancer last year. Many of them will need blood, sometimes

daily, during their chemotherapy treatment.

A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood.

A number of our own St. Peter members have been recipients of blood thanks to blood drives like the one being held

November 18 here in our west wing.

Please prayerfully consider signing up by contacting redcrossblood.org or Paula Hoegemeyer.

Give Thanks! Give Blood! St. Peter is hosting an American Red Cross Blood Drive in the West (Science) Wing.

November Focus: Adoption

Did you know?

In the Old Testament, there are over 40 references to orphans or

‘fatherless’, and the importance of caring for them. Several New Testament

teachings refer directly to the concept of adoption. (“Blessed be the God and

Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual

blessing…even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world…In

love He predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to

the purpose of His will, to the praise of His glorious grace…”) Ephesians 1:3-6.

God’s love for us through our ‘adoption’ into His family is reflected when

birthparents, for whatever reason not in a position to provide, choose to love their child so much that they are willing

to put aside their own needs, and intentionally choose parents for him/her who are ready to provide the kind of life

they want for their child. The adopting parents fully accept a child into their family through another act of love and

grace, giving the child their unconditional love, time, nurture, and providing for all of the material needs of the child.

[LifeDate, Fall 2012]

Birthparents who make adoption plans are fulfilling their parenting responsibilities to make sure their child’s

long-term needs are met in the best possible way. In order to do this, they must put their child’s needs above their

own – a sign of maturity, responsibility, and selflessness. Adoption is by no means taking the easy way out. It is a

difficult decision, and young women especially, need to be supported in this decision by those around them.

[Five Myths About Adoption brochure from Loving & Caring Inc., Lancaster, PA]

Embryo Adoption:

“Embryos created through in vitro fertilization are at risk to be killed. Embryo rescue provides an opportunity

for birth for embryos who have been conceived and then cryopreserved. It is estimated that there are over 600,000

embryos cryopreserved in the United States today.” [Kim Laube at 2017 LFL Regional Conference]

“Lutherans For Life has a position statement favoring embryonic adoption. Instead of framing the issue in

terms of ‘adopting embryos’, it seems more realistic to frame it in terms of ‘rescuing embryos’ through adoption.

Such an approach recognizes their plight of being children without homes, facing certain death, and with no one to

parent them. They are children placed in peril who need rescuing. There is little difference between adopting an

embryo and adopting an infant or older child. Neither our size nor our location determines our humanness. If we

oppose the killing of human embryos because they are human beings, why should we oppose adopting human

embryos?” You can learn more about the actual adoption (rescue) process at www.nightlight.org. [Rev Dr. James

Lamb in LifeDate, Fall 2007]

Please pray:

-for birth parents (especially teens and young adults in a ‘crisis’ pregnancy) as they make difficult decisions regarding

the future of their children – for God’s direction and peace.

-for families considering adoption or foster care – that God would grant wisdom and guidance as they make

life-changing decisions.

-for adoption to be more highly promoted as a better choice than abortion in a crisis situation.

Brochures on various life issues are available in the tract rack in the narthex

(on the right side of the large bulletin board).

HISTORY CORNER

It is important to remember that St. Peter History is not meant to show

how great St. Peter is, but how amazing God is as He works through

His Word and Sacraments among us. History is His story. Our History

is a Ministry that proclaims His great deeds to future generations.

We have a story to tell!

MEET YOUR HISTORY COMMITTEE - Part 2

With this month's History Corner, we will introduce you to the remainder of our History Committee. They also will

share with you what they are thankful for at St. Peter. As we approach the Thanksgiving Season this month, let's give

thanks for our Pastors & Teachers and all in a leadership role for their dedication to our church & school.

Joyce 'Rachow' Schwark: As a lifelong member of St. Peter, I am thankful that my parents brought me up in the one

true faith at St. Peter. They faithfully brought me to church every Sunday. This faithfulness on their part has led me to

be an active member and to grow in my faith. My great uncle, Johann Rachow, was a Charter Member at St. Peter.

Brenda 'Stark' Schwark: My husband and I are lifelong members of St. Peter as were my parents and grandparents.

My great-grandfather, Joachim Stark, was a Charter Member. I am thankful I was baptized, confirmed and married

here. There is no greater joy than knowing the gifts that God has given our family. St. Peter is the 'rock' on which I

stand. My hope and prayer is that our church and school will be your roots and the rock of your salvation.

May 'Sharp' Schramm: My husband, Ken, was a lifelong member of St. Peter and I feel very blessed to be a part of

this church. The people here have been a strong support system for me and my family. I am very thankful that the

ministry here has given me the privilege to grow in the Word and to know God's amazing grace. I am also thankful

for our Christian Day School. My five children all attended St. Peter School, which provided them with a firm foun-

dation in Christ.

Janet 'Penzien' Stange: I am so grateful to my parents for raising me in the Christian faith at St. Peter. My

grandparents and parents were lifelong members, as my family and I are. Our families have been baptized, confirmed

and married here, some in our first little white church and some in what is now known now as Kaiser Hall. Over the

years, we have been nurtured by the teachers and pastors and have been surrounded by Christian family and friends. I

was blessed to have been able to teach here at St. Peter for seventeen years. Our faith and opportunities to serve have

grown tremendously over the years. God is good.

Wilma 'Penzien' Wangelin: I am a lifelong member of St. Peter. My great-grandfather, Christian Schoof, and

grandfather, Joachim Schoof, were Charter Members. I am so thankful that these men and others through their

foresight and determination were responsible for organizing and establishing what St. Peter is today. There have been

many physical changes to our church and school as we continue to grow, and we have been served by many dedicated

and devoted pastors and teachers, but the saving Word remains the same. To God be the Glory! I pray I will be able

to continue to be of service in promoting the mission of St. Peter Lutheran Church and School.

It's still all about Jesus!!

The History Committee is looking for missing

Confirmation pictures. They are a valuable part of our history.

Here is a list of missing class pictures: 1899, 1900, 1901,

1905,1906, 1907, 1908, 1909, 1911 through 1926.

Please contact any member of the Historical

Committee if you have any of these and are able

to help fill in our missing years.

NOTE: If you are a longtime member of

St. Peter, we would love to have you write

an article about some of your favorite

memories you have, either about your

school days at St. Peter or memories of

being a member of St. Peter. You can

drop articles off at the Church Office.

We invite anyone interested in joining our committee to please contact one of

the committee members listed in the October and November History Corner.

forward to the vicarage interviews. Its been great to see Kyle Wangelin on campus. I’ll be looking forward to Call

Day for him in a few short months.

Thank you for the generosity you have shown to me for so many years. Sincerely, Matt and Shannon Lorenz.

All St. Peter applicants regardless of race, color, and national or ethnic origin may apply for the

Dear St. Peter Lutheran Church and School ~

Thank you so much for your participation in Peacemakers International Octoberfest, Chene Street, Detroit.

We were blessed on both Wednesday, October 17, the clothes sorting event and then again for the main event held on

Saturday, October 20 at Peacemakers.

At the Wednesday event, about 50 youth and adults helped to sort the mountain of donations. We completed the task

in less than 2 hours. We were blessed!

On Saturday at Peacemakers, we ministered to, handed out clothes and fed between 150-200 people from the

Chene Street area.

We were blessed again! The weather on Saturday was threatening rain, strong winds and storms all day. It did all of

these. But God was in the midst of everything! Because of His presence and love, everyone was kept safe and

blessed!

Thanks again for anything and everything you did to help us make this year’s events a blessing to

many. Many hands make much lighter work!

God bless you richly today!

The Holiday’s Are Coming!! Remember Scrip This Season!

What is Scrip?

SCRIP is a fundraising program that allows individuals to generate revenue by

purchasing gift cards through our program. Gift cards are available for a variety of

retailers: drug stores, gas stations, restaurants, hotels, cruise lines, oil changes, online

shopping and many, many more. There are more than 100 merchants that participate

in the program with more joining regularly. St. Peter purchases the cards at a discounted price and that discount

becomes extra for St. Peter Lutheran Church and School as well as for the participating individuals. The more cards

you purchase during the year, the more profit you generate. Cards are purchased at face value; the discount is from

the participating retailer. The retailers offer discounts that vary from 2% up to 18% or more. They also run specials

from time to time and increase their discount. The amount of discount you receive will be distributed as you

designate. School families apply the credit toward their tuition with 75% to tuition and 25% to the general fund

of the Church and School to help with operating expenses and maintenance of the building. If you do not have

children in the school 100% may be applied to the General Fund.

Sunday School continues with teachers and students enjoying learning the love of Jesus. We are very busy now

putting together our Christmas Service, “Celebrate The Gifts”. It certainly takes a lot of team effort to do a great job

‘Celebrating Jesus’s Birth, Our Greatest Gift.’ I am very thankful for our volunteer Sunday School teachers.

They are faithful to their service here at St. Peter. We continue to press on being

“Abundantly Blessed” and to “Bless Abundantly!”

Yours In Christ, Pat Losey, Sunday School Superintendent
