*Katherine AlexanderKatherine Alexander earned her teaching certificate attending classes at Gainesville Junior College (where she attended on a full theater scholarship), UGA and Northwestern University. Certified to teach Theater as well as Mathematics she taught at Hilsman MS, Athens Tech, and George Walton Academy. Prior to her arrival at Mill Creek in 2008 she taught theater full time at Berkmar HS for nine years, directing 41 main stage plays and musicals. Annie will mark her 19th play/musical here at Mill Creek. She developed a love for theatre in early childhood and has been involved in theatre for over 26 years. Some of her favorite roles as an actress over the years include Dorothy in The Wiz, Annie Sullivan in The Miracle Worker, Guinevere in Camelot, Dr. Einstein in Arsenic & Old Lace, Dolly in Hello, Dolly!, Mrs. Pearce in My Fair Lady, Maria in The Sound of Music, Dolly in The Matchmaker and The Clown in Reese & Babe. Some of her favorite things about directing are the collaborative process and the unique and interesting challenges that each show present.

LOCKED INA PLAY IN ONE ACT

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Strokes, Locked-in Syndrome patients lose control of all voluntary muscles except for some eye movement. In Complete Lock-In Syndrome, the patient can not even move his/her eyes. The patient is aware of everything that occurs around them and can feel excruciating pain due to the awkward body positions from which they are helpless to extricate themselves. There is no treatement for Locked-In Syndrome, and recovery is very rare.

People with Locked-In Syndrome can sometimes communicate with eye movements. A French journalist and victim of Locked-In Syndrome named Jean-Dominique Bauby dictated a book entirely through eye movements. This book, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, is an excellent source for understanding both the suffering and victories that these patients can experience.

**Melody WahausMelody began pursuing acting early on during middle school when she took part in multiple summer acting camps and took acting lessons. Melody says, “I learned my freshman year that high school theater was a completely different experience, as well the best way to grow as an actress.” Melody has made it a priority to be involved with any show she can, whether that means being on stage, backstage, or in the booth. This year, Melody served as a Student Officer for Thespian Troup 6855. This means that Melody was at every rehearsal and every show this season. Some of Melody’s favorite roles during her time here at Mill Creek High School are: Beatrice in Jekyll and Hyde and the mother in Flowers For Algernon. Melody has also played Emerald City Citizen in The Wiz, Mary in Canterbury Tales, Flunkie in John Lennon and Me, Hooverville Denizen/Nurse in Annie, and finally, Penny in Pressure, and Anastasia in Mirrors, both one act plays presented this evening.

This is Melody’s first time directing and she describes it as “a great journey”. She says, “My cast is a wonderful group of people who care about the show as much as I do, and my stage manager, Victoria Rexhausen, has been an amazing help along the way. We make a good team. Through directing, I learned the difficulties of casting, the stress of creating a set, the adventure of finding the right costumes/props, the pain of persuading cast members to learn lines, but above all else, the immense joy of watching my ideas come to life before my eyes.”

Melody’s future plans include directing as well as acting, because, as she puts it, “This is what I am truly passionate about. I know, regardless of what path I take, I will always be a theater kid at heart.”

Setting: Present DayThe backstage of a theater at Wonderland, a

corporate amusement park.

Through the Mirror is a loose adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. It is also, more importantly, an exploration of problems prevalent amoung the youth of today. The majority of the play is Aly’s hallucinations personified by characters and scenes from Carroll’s novel; moments of confusion, illogic, and irrationality are, therefore intentional and deliberate .

*Eric BurlesonEric has been part of Mill Creek High School’s Theater group for all of his high school career. Beginning as a Wickersham brother in his freshman year, to Daddy Warbucks in his senor year, acting on stage has become a pivotal part in Eric’s decision making process. Through his roles as Jeff Levine, in John Lennon and Me, the cowardly lion, in The Wiz, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Eric came to realize that theatre work is the one thing he is dedicated to and passionate about. Eric plans to follow this path to a career in acting and says, “I know that this will make me happy through all of my days. The overall enjoyment I’ve had while working

with cast and crew members of each show has been a force that has lifted me to heights I never thought possible, and has ultimately led me to acting as a career.”Eric chose Through the Mirror because it has a theme relevant to the youth of this generation and grasps a story line that is familiar to us all through Alice in Wonderland. Through the directing process he learned that in order to have the best show possible, time is needed to put forth the effort necessary for creating one’s vision of a show. Eric says, “The responsibility as a director is large and difficult, and when it is among a cast of your peers it is that much harder. Throughout this process the level of respect has grown between us as a unit, because we all desire to have the best show possible. I thank my cast tremendously for that opportunity.”

Pressure focuses on the lives and circumstances of several students, and how each handles the pressures to perform in various aspects of life. A girl ignoring what she loves in order please everyone around her; a young immigrant faced with the responsibilities of manhood while still a boy; a girl trying to fit in wrestles with a difficult decision; and a boy who has given up because he can’t live up to neither his parent’s expecations nor his brother’s accomplishments.

**T’ché Christiana EdwardsT’ché has been part of the Mill Creek Theatre group for the past four years. Her roles include: Seussical-Who, John Lennon & Me-Flunkie, Girl in the Mirror-Student, 14 Lines-Felicia, Hairspray-Cindy Watkins, Canterbury Tales-Eve, Don’t Fear the Reaper-Donna Destiny, and Flowers For Algernon-Brandy Seldon.

T’ché choose Pressure for tonight’s production when after reading it, she had so many techinical ideas for it. She says, “ I knew I could make this show absolutely wonderful, especially with the actors I had available to me in 7th period.” T’ché found directing Pressure a ‘mind blowing’ experence. With all the work I have to do this year, I am overwhelmed, but I love the thrill of people getting to see a show that my actors and I put together - something magical that we made out of thin air.”

T’ché plans to attend Culinary Institutes of America, where she will major in Culinary Arts and minor in Business Management. Her goals include owing her own restaurant and/or catering business. Even though she does not plan to ‘full out’ do theatre, she does want to continue to act, here and there, because well, as she says” “to be honest, I love the stage, and the thrill of theatre.”

*Bianca RobinsonBianca has been part of Mill Creek High School’s Theatre group for all of her high school career. This is her first show as a director, although she has been stage manager for two competition shows, and had some input “here and there” as she says.

Bianca has played a variety of roles over the past four years. During her sophomore year she was not only stage manager for that year’s competition show, but played Miss Motor Mouth in Hairspray. Other roles include Pertelo in the Canterbury Tales, for which she was awarded “Best Actress” for her performnce, and Dorothy, in The Wiz. During this, her senior year, Bianca was not only stage manager for this year’s competition play, No Problem, she gave an uproariously funny performance as Miss Hannigan in this year’s production of Annie.

Bianca picked Boy Meets Girl because of the way it was written. She says, “It made me laugh, so I assumed it would be funny to others as well.” She pauses and then says wistfully, “I hope”. Of her experience directing this play, Bianca says, “I’ve learned that everyone has their own way of doing things and you really have to be careful in the way you direct so no one goes away with hurt feelings.”After graduation, Bianca plans to attend Georgia Gwinnett College. Her goal is to become a very successful singer/singwriter.
