School should be a fun place where learning happens. A home away from home.

A warm, inviting environment. Children own this environment – their work

will always be on display. That each child is an individual and has their

own learning style and growth in learning. That children learn by doing and being

actively involved in their learning. Building a strong, caring family within our

classroom. Being organized and disciplined.

These are units that are inquiry based – the children are actively involved in their learning and their interests in each topic are covered. Other areas such as Language Arts, Math, Bible are also covered within these units for example – writing about our own characteristics that make us a good citizen. Specialist teachers also align what they are doing with our units where possible.

The children learn bible stories – eg. Jesus’ life, people from the old testament eg. Moses, Noah, and Joseph, and the message of the New Testament.

Where possible Bible will tie into our Units of Inquiry. For example right now we are learning the 10 commandments: God’s Rules for helping us be Good Citizens of the world. We always look back on the learner profiles and how the people we meet in the bible are risk-takers, principled, caring etc.

A folder containing your child’s work comes home every quarter for you to see exactly what your child has been learning.

When the folders come home I ask that you keep all pages in order and send it back within a week so I can continue to add work to them.

Please view the portfolios tonight: we have started to add work. The children are allowed to view their folder during the day and add work that they see is important.

Page 14: Open night presentation grade one

Each day the children will bring their folder home.Inside there will often be:• Letters from the Elementary Principal• Newsletters from us• Learning tools eg. sight words, phonic aids• Readers and Homework• Menus from the cafeteria – J and J.• Anything important will come home in these folders.

PLEASE SEND THEM BACK EACH DAY – THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.
