On February 22-March 1,2015 Thomas and Jeannette Johnson celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary cruising the Southern Caribbean. Their Itinerary was San Juan, Puerto Rico, ST. Thomas, Barbados, St.Lucia, St. Kitts, and St Maarten.

WOW! What a honeymoon!

On April 16, Mary Lee & Howard Cameron drove with their daughter to Dripping Springs, Texas. They attended the wedding of their Granddaughter, Marigay Hluza. It was a beautiful outdoor evening wedding in the Hill Country and was attended by several family members. Before and after the wedding, they toured the area, visiting Canyon Lake, Wimberly and other places that brought fond memories of their younger days in that area. Marigay is presently employed as a Drug Enforcement Agent (DEA) in San Diego, California.

Howard recently had surgery but is presently doing fine. With all the rain falling in Texas they appear to have been blessed with good weather in April for the wedding.

On April 9 Jean Houston attended the destination wedding of her cousin and bride Erica Harris to groom Maurice Kelly. The couple married in Puerto Rico because of the romantic setting.

The wedding took place on the beach at La Concha Resort. The thing Jean remembers most is the wedding was supposed to start a 5:00 pm and all the guests were seated when it started raining. Everyone went inside but before everyone could get settled down again, the rain stopped and the wedding went on outside as planned. The wedding was beautiful as the wedding party danced into the evening.

Jean, her two sisters and her cousin flew there on Southwest Airlines. There were many family and friends, 25 were from Houston. Jean also got to meet the groom and his family for the first time plus meeting another twenty five persons who were also attending the wedding.

While there they did some sightseeing and one of the days went to the Bacardi Rum Factory.

June/July 2015

During April 28 - May 14, Lawson & Kay Cook vacationed in Switzerland and Italy. In Switzerland, they rode the Bernenia Express, a scenic train through the Swiss Alps. The snow-covered mountains and quaint villages were spectacular. They then joined a Trafalgar guided tour group in Rome for the “Best of Italy” tour. Among the many scenic and historic sites they visited were: Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Cathedral, Colosseum (Rome), Pompeii, Isle of Capri, Amalfi Coast, Basilica St. Francis (Assisi), St. Mark’s Cathedral, Doge’s Palace (Venice), Milan Cathedral (Milan), Lake Maggiore, Leaning Tower (Pisa), and Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore (Florence). This was Lawson’s first visit to Europe and Kay’s second in quite a few years. They say that it was a wonderful trip and Springtime is a very good time to visit Europe.Only on the last day of the tour did they hit a bump in the road. Kay fell on the steps of the tour bus and broke her arm. They got to ride in an Italian ambulance to the hospital where her arm was set in a cast. When she returned home, she required surgery. It was completed on May 19th and she is recovering and doing well now.Even though it was not on their trip itinerary to experience the Italian medical system, they say it was not a totally bad experience and they thoroughly enjoyed all of their vacation except that last day.

Sugar Land Mayor James A. Thompson speaks at April 2015 Lunch Meeting

Programs Chairlady Bobbie White introduced our April luncheon speaker, Sugar Land Mayor James A. Thompson, to an audience of 40 TIHAA members and guests at the America Buffet. Bobbie read from the Mayor’s lengthy resume of public service: being a native Texan, a USAF C-130 pilot, a board member of the Ft. Bend MUD #12, a board member of the Ft. Bend Levee Improvement Dist. #2, Sugar Land City Council board member and finally as the Mayor of Sugar Land.

Mayor Thompson began by giving us a brief history of the city of Sugar Land that now has a population over 86,000. The modern city was founded in 1959 from a portion of a the 24,000-acre “Oakland Plantation”, dating from the founding of the Republic of Texas.

The Mayor said that he was pleased when he heard that Texas Instruments was planning to build a new building in Sugar Land. He said that the city worked to help fast track the building of the new TI facility. He said that this was actually the first building that TI had built on its own for its own use. He said that the city offered incentives to help make the project a reality. Mayor Thompson then covered some of the projects that will be developed soon on some of the adjacent property, some of which is owned by the city. The area is a planned development zone of mixed use, including housing. In addition to the 6,500-seat Performing Arts Center that is currently under construction, they plan a Hotel and Conference Center complex near the TI site. Flour Corp. has land adjacent to TI for future development, and of course the U.H. Sugar Land campus is across University Boulevard from TI.

He talked briefly about the former Imperial Sugar site that is currently being developed. A hotel is planned for the old Char House, the old building with the Imperial Sugar sign on the top. Next door will be a Children's Museum and room for the Heritage Foundation.  An area around the transformed sugar mill will be a Town Square, similar to the one at First Colony.

Mayor Thompson said that one of the cities top goals was to be the safest city in America. He said they were currently rated as #3 in Texas.

The Mayor asked if there were any questions from the audience. Several questions were submitted and he was given an appreciative applause by our membership at the conclusion of his remarks.

Mayor Thompson is now serving his final 2-year term as mayor, being limited to 8 years by term limits. He and wife, Gay, will continue to reside in Sugar Land after his term ends in May, 2016.  The mayor's resume/biography and contact information can be found on the official City of Sugar Land website:  sugarlandtx.gov.

TIHAA Day TripThe Cotton Gin Museum & Lavender Farm

ByDella DuHart

Early Saturday morning, May 16th, a total of 15 TIHAA members: Clarissa Bank, Sandra & Roger Coughran, Cindy & Tom Croissant, Bernadine Dennis, Gwen Dickey, Della DuHart, Mary & Rudy Gomez, Mary Green, Marian & Bob Gruber, Sarah Harvey, and DeAnn Thomas took off down Hwy 290 to the Burton Cotton Gin Museum & the Chappell Hill Lavender Farm.

Now you know of course our first stop was Buc-EE’s. We all went inside and got snacks, looked around and took a potty break.

We then boarded the bus and continued our journey. Upon arrival at the Burton Cotton Gin Museum, we met our tour guide, Jerry Moore. He took us on a short tour and gave us a small presentation of how cotton was baled and picked. This led some of us back down memory lane — picking cotton. We learned the difference between picking and pulling cotton.Picking Cotton: Holding the bowl & removing the cotton only.Pulling Cotton: Removing the bowl and the cotton.

After the tour, a short video documentary made it a little more understandable.

Next, we moved on to enjoy a delightful lunch at “Must Be Heaven” Restaurant. Then, we were off to the Chappell Hill Lavender Farm where some of the ladies cut flowers and did some shopping.

On the bus, several small tokens were given out from the Lavender Farm. Those lucky club members were: Roger Coughran, Cindy Croissant, Mary Green, Marian Gruber, Sarah Harvey & LeAnn Thomas.

We had so much fun laughing and catching up on old TI times that we forgot to play Bingo! So, I just decided to give 3 lucky club members gifts. Bernadine Dennis, Mary Gomez and Sandra Coughran were the lucky winners.

Thanks everyone and join us again soon for our next day trip!

SPRING FLING/BINGO PARTYby

Israel Morales

Wow!! What a pleasant three hours we spent at the Annual Spring Bingo Event on May 23rd at the new TI Building in Sugar Land.

Jean Houston and Della DuHart were there to greet all the guests with a sign-up and a White Elephant Bingo card.It was the first time ever for the membership to enter the confines of the new TI Building. And the lunch/break room is where we had ‘our party’.

As most parties go, we ate first. And as in most parties, there was plenty for the guests to eat. And as bargains go, we made out like bandits for only the $3.00 we paid at this event. Considering that we had at least two sandwiches, chips, fruits, drinks, ice cream and cake, it was a steal. We owe this much in part to Ralph and Estella Garcia who made the rounds visiting several businesses to get us the best deal our money could buy.

The excellent help and cooperation from our lady club members helped Estella and Ralph lay out the spread in such an attractive and appetizing fashion that everyone was ready to dig into any of the variety of sandwiches. Members chose either a ham and cheese sandwich, a turkey and Swiss sandwich, or a beef and cheese sandwich. But food is not really all that this event is about. It’s about friends coming together and having fun playing a game that all seniors can play – BINGO.

Gary Luckett then started the games proclaiming “LET THE BINGO GAMES BEGIN.” The White Elephant bingo games went swiftly and without a hitch. Everyone won at least one of these funny, strange, or what the heck is this gift until they were all gone.

Lydia Barker, ever so gracious, donated five bags and purses to add to the games and winner’s excitement. Spring Super Bingo, as we call our games today was the highlight of what used to be The Spring Event. Unfortunately, our great Bingo Caller, Don Stefan was not there to call the game. Don had pneumonia so it has been a tough week for the Stefans.

Filling in was Bob Gruber, who as an 80 plus year-old rookie, did a great job. After a few dropped Bingo number balls, he got the hang of it and finished in great fashion. Of the sixty-nine members who signed up, seventeen did not show, giving us a total of 52 present. And of those, forty-seven played Super Bingo.

The prizes were for eight Super Bingo winners of $25.00 gift cards and then three more winners of $50.00 each. Winners of the $25.00 Gift Card were: Cheryl Fellnew, Bob Gruber, Kathleen Lyons, Sharlet Matlak, Jean Houston, Dora Gray, Della DuHart, Daryl Moss.

Winners of the $50.00 Cash Prizes were: Patricia Oates Collier, Mary Green, and Ralph Garcia.

Thanks go to all of the club officers who were involved in putting this event through. Mary Brown, our special inside TI person did a great job in making our first visit to the new TI building a pleasant one should be commended for a job well done. Bob Gruber spent many hours in this endeavor also.

Those who might not be officers but did lots of work in helping Ralph and Estella with the food spread are: Sandy Zamora, Dorothy Wanza, Mary Brown, Brenda Moss and Nora Morales.
