School Bus Safety - Mr. Haag

Parents and Students - Riding on the school bus is a privilege and not a “right.” School bus safety is one thing we take very seriously. The main goal of a bus driver is to transport your students from point A to point B safely. Every time a student does something out of line it takes the driver’s eyes off of the road. This could be a student being too loud, not

sitting properly, showing bullying behavior, inappropriate language, etc. Depending on the severity of the action, if a student receives a bus misconduct notice, the following consequences will occur:

First write up -

Verbal warning or a 3 day suspension from the bus.

Second write up - 3 - 5 school day

suspension from the bus.

Third write up –5 - 10 school day

suspension from the bus.

Fourth write up - 1

month suspension from the bus.

Fifth write up - your student will be

suspended from the bus for the remainder of the school year.

We do reserve the write to issue a higher consequence depending on the action of the students involved. Please help us help your students to be safe on the bus and help the bus drivers instead of work against them.

Welcome Back to the 2019-2020 School year. It has been a fantastic start to the school year as we are off and running with high levels of learning and continued opportunities for students to grow academically, socially, and in their own character. You will notice a few new faces around Jardine Middle School this year. We welcome the following staff members to our school. Ms. Tammy Hazelton is filling the role of 1/2 time assistant principal and 1/2 time special ed teacher. Mr. Steve Beitz is teaching 8th grade math. Ms. Deneen Schoenfeldt is our new instructional coach. We also have Ms. Gesner as a new paraprofessional. We are excited for you to meet them and excited to have them a part of our school community and family. Thank you to everyone who came out to Back to School Night. This is such a great evening to be a part of such a special community as well as see your student's schedule and meet the teachers they come in contact each and every day. It's a wonderful opportunity to open up the lines of communication with our staff to build a great partnership between school and home. With that said, this is early, but please mark your calendars for Fall Conferences on October 23rd and 24th. This is an important event to check in on your student's progress as well as check the pulse on their academic growth in their classes. Sports are also off an running this school year as well as our all school musical, “OZ.” We are adding one sport to the calendar this year. Soccer will be offered in the Fall for boys and in the Spring for Girls. Thank you for sharing your most valuable asset to us, your children. Let's have a fantastic school year.

WELCOME BACK -Ms. Hazelton

Hello! My name is Tammy Hazelton. This is my first year at Jardine Middle School, and I am excited to begin my Jaguar journey! I have been a part of TPS for twenty-nine years where I began my career at Landon Middle School as a special education teacher in 1990. I spent the past seventeen years as an administrator at Robinson Middle School. Wishing to parallel my administrative work with teaching, I recently landed at Jardine where I will be a half-time assistant principal and half time special education teacher. This seems to be a perfect fit for me at this point in my career.

I love animals and doing about anything outdoors. Bicycling is a passion of mine, and I enjoy sharing that passion with students. My favorite memories as a principal were taking students on bike rides through Topeka. I plan to carry that on at Jardine. Please reach out to me if you would like to help with this.

MATH RULES!!!!! - Mr. Way

Mike Singletary of the Chicago Bears once said, “Do you know what my favorite part about the game is? The opportunity to play.” We at Jardine Middle School want you to know that every student has an opportunity to participate in after school activities. To begin the school year our fall activities are: Volleyball, coached by Mrs. Gilliland, Mr. Falk, Mrs. Scott, and Mrs. Latham. Girls tennis,

coached by Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Abellon. Foot-ball, coached by Mr. Daniels, Mr. Brown, Mr Bell, Mr. Roe, Mr. Beitz, and Mr. Esau. All students participating must have a physical on file and have maintained grades set by KSHSAA and USD 501 regulations. I would like to inform you that we have soccer coming in the fall for boys, coached by Allen Burke and spring for girls, coached

by Mr. Lobatos. This year our drama department is presenting the play “Oz,” directed

by Mrs. Rowe and Mrs. Shelton. We encourage all students from 6th, 7th

and 8th grade to participate. Play try-outs begin Sept. 9th and

performance will be in November.

Welcome, new 6th grade students. We’re going to have a great year! We will start our school year with our unit on Ratios and Rates (this is pretty much what the whole year is about). We will cover ratios (if 3 candy bars cost $6, what would 2 bars cost” and ratio tables. Also covered are percentages and rates (the card rove at 10 miles an hour).

The 7th grade math team has started the year working with ratios and proportional relationships. In Module 1, students will build upon their 6th grade reasoning about ratios, rates, and unit rates to define proportional relationships and the constant of proportionality. Students will learn that the unit rate of a collection of equivalent ratios is called the constant of proportionality and can be used to represent proportional relationships with equations of the form y = kx, where k is the constant of proportionality. The math team is grateful that we have programs like IXL and Freckle Math to help our students achieve success when learning new mathematical concepts. These programs allow our students to work on their assignments anywhere they have internet access. Any encouragement for your student to practice at home would be greatly appreciated. We are looking forward to a great year with this 7th grade class. Welcome back! We are off to a great start so far. For the last few weeks of school, we have been working on using a protractor, measuring angles, finding the missing degrees in supplementary and complementary angles and reviewing two step equations. If you would like to help your student be successful, please have discussions with them about how angles are used in the real world. Please let us know if you have any questions. Jardine artist begin their year learning about the process of wax resist and designing a sketchbook that will hold all project planning, sketchbook assignments and notes for the semester. We are really going to place our focus on the importance of research, design planning, and our process of art making.. I believe every good idea deserves time to develop, and I want to place focus on the importance of creative thinking and bringing personal meaning into our art work. We are building up to a unit project that will focus on artist Aaron Douglas. Student work will be selected to represent Jardine and will be on public display this year at the Aaron Douglas Art Fair. Please join us in celebrating our Jardine artist by attending the art fair Saturday, September 28nd from 10am to 5pm. The park is located on 12th street between Lane and Washburn, in Topeka Ks. In addition to viewing this work, our Jardine art club will be selling work to raise money for our after school art club.

Dress Code: Coats, hats, and bandanas belong in student lockers. Hoods from Hoodies will be kept down at all times. Clothing or belt buckles which contain obscene language, alcohol, weapon, or drug advertisement are not acceptable. Any clothing or accessories that would hinder the education of others or shows too much skin is not acceptable. Exposure of under garments or sagging pants is not acceptable. In all cases in which students have inappropriate clothing they will first be given the option of correcting the situation. If they refuse, it will become a disciplinary matter and a consequence will result. Backpacks, etc.: All gym bags/purses/large backpacks/string bags are to be placed in lockers during the school day and are not allowed to be carried to class. Spreading rumors is not tolerated. It is defined as passing unwanted, untrue or hurtful information about another student verbally, in writing, e-mail, or by repeating and/or encouraging rumors by receiving rumors (verbally or in writing). Frequently, extreme conflicts, threats of violence, or violence are a result of rumors.

We have been busy plugging in the “new” P.E. Standards. Each month you will see a new standard and example(s) we will be using in our daily activities. There are five new standards. STANDARD 1. The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns.

1A. Locomotor: Combines locomotor skills and manipulative skills (i.e. throwing, catching, dribbling, kicking and striking) in various activities. JMS example-Hantis, frisbee, pinball 1B. Manipulatives: Performs manipulative skills consistently with a mature pattern. -Executes manipulative skills with dominant and non-dominant hand or foot. JMS example-Floor hockey, tennis lead up games, etc. 1C. Offensive and Defensive Skills: Demonstrates basic offensive skills (i.e. pivot, fake, jab step, screen) in modified and small-sided games. -Performs defensive skills (i.e. drop step, defensive stance and movement) in modified and small-sided games. -Changes direction and speed as necessary during gameplay. The Language Arts Department will continue using the “Collections” textbooks this year. The textbook has an online feature that the students will be able to log on to. my.hrw.com Textbooks w ill remain in the classroom but everything they need can be accessed through the online feature when away from class.

I am the chromebook contact so if your child needs anything associated with the chromebook please tell them to come see me in the Library.

This week we have been busy checking out library books through our Language Arts classes. All students are able to check out books for their reading pleasure.

What’s going on in Science??? - The Science Team

6th graders are now using our HMH curriculum module A, Unit 1 – Introduction to Engineering and Science. They will explore the connection between engineering, science and society. They will also investigate how scientists and engineers use system and model as they work through the design process.

HMH Science Dimensions™ is our new online program this year for science. This will be our resource for readings, various assignments, and labs. Just because we are moving towards being more digital does not mean the hands-on stuff is gone. Part of science will always be about learning through experiences. The 7th graders are off to a great start! We are learning Scientific Method and lab equipment we will be using during our investigations and experiments this year. In our first quarter this year we will be learning all about the different types of Energies through labs and investigations. This will be our Physics section this quarter.

As 8th graders head into their final year of middle school, we will actually dive into

the past to start off in science. Using evidence from fossils by dating them and having an understanding of how life has changed over time, students will be able to organize that evidence from oldest to youngest. With this basic understanding, we will go into detail how animals have appeared to become more complex over time and how scientists have been able to explain how and why it happened. This leads into topics like survival of the fittest, mutations in DNA, and the evolution of species.

7th/8th Computer Applications

Hello! I’m Mr. Esau and I teach 7th and 8th grade computer courses here at Jardine. I previously taught 5th grade at Jardine Elementary and Avondale West. For September, I will be working on Digital Citizenship and Microsoft Word/Google Docs. The goal for 7th grade is to prepare them for the 8th grade ICA (Integrated Computer Applications) course which can be taken for a high school credit in fine arts. HISTORY HAPPENINGS - Ms. Morelli

6th Grade Social Studies Welcome 6th Graders and their families to Jardine from the Ancient World History teachers, Mr Jennings and Mr. Schawo! This year we will be learning about a number of Ancient Civilizations including Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Greece, and Rome along with a few others. We actually begin with prehistory and the hominids during the Stone Age. During the month we will show how hunter/gatherers learned to farm, which led to the first civilization of Sumer in Mesopotamia. We are also learning about the tools historians use to learn about the past and historical thinking skills students can use to help determine the validity and reliability of sources. At the end of September, the students will be learning how to write a 5 paragraph essay that uses appropriate evidence to prove a thesis about hunting-gathering and farming societies. Please contact us anytime if you have any questions or concerns. 7th grade Social Studies Kansas History is in full swing. The 7th Grade History Teachers are Ms. Miner and Ms. Morelli. We are starting the year off with Native American History. This will include a guest speaker, atlatl demonstration, and a multi-faceted project for our students. Our fall DBQ (Document based Questioning) will be done in conjunction with our Language Arts Team as a teaching model prior to our Spring DBQ. We are looking forward to an exciting year and getting to know your young people. 8th Grade United States History The craziness of 8th grade has begun! The 8th Grade History Teachers are Ms. Morelli and Mr. Schawo. Students are getting used to their new schedules and their new teachers. In 8th Grade students are learning about American History. We have started with the causes of the American Revolutionary War and will continue on to the American Revolutionary War. They will be taking their District Writing Assessment (DBQ) at the end of September/beginning of October. Ms. Morelli does have a student teacher this semester. Ms. Crawshaw is from Emporia State University. She will be taking over teaching towards the end of September and will be teaching until around Thanksgiving Break.

The first week of the 2019-2020 school year has flown by and the majority of my 8th graders are settling into the class. So...What is this Class About????? This semester class is designed to help each student explore a life-management plan for life beyond high school. Strategies designed for caring for self and others, career success, and coordinating personal and career responsibilities will be covered. Personal life choices made now and throughout life determine quality of life for the present and future. High School Credit as an 8th Grade Student 8th grade students have the first 6 weeks to decide on taking Career and Life Planning for high school credit. A parent/guardian permission slip is required to receive credit. If students decides not

to take the high school credit or if they fail they may have to retake the class later in order to move on to other high school courses If taken for high school credit, the GPA will stay with the student throughout the rest of their high school career. Please talk the options over with your student.

“OZ!” A DAZZLING MUSICAL BASED ON THE L. FRANK BAUM CLASSIC STORY

A cyclone carries Dorothy and Toto to the magical Land of Oz. When Dorothy’s house squashes the Wicked Witch of the East, she is ecstatically thanked by the liberated Munchkins and given permission to wear the witch’s powerful silver slippers. From there, Baum’s lovable characters, rubber-legged Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion and Tin Woodsman, join Dorothy on a journey to meet the great Oz. While on their trek, they battle the Wicked Witch of the West, who is determined to get revenge for the death of her sister. Eventually, Glinda the Good Witch helps Dorothy defeat the evil witch and her winged monkeys. The great and powerful wizard grants Dorothy’s friends their wishes and of course, helps Dorothy return to Kansas.

Play tryouts will take place September 9-12 after school in the Music Room. There will be an information meeting for parents and students on September 16 at 5:30 pm in the JMS Commons. SCHOOL GUIDANCE COUNSELORS

We would like to welcome all students and parents to a new year at Jardine Middle School. Mr. Falk is the counselor for the 6th and 8th graders. Ms. Sullivan is the counselor for 7th graders. Jardine Guidance Counselors provide services for students regarding academics, career planning, and personal/social needs. Students may meet with a counselor by asking a teacher for a “Request to See” pass. During August and September, Mr. Falk and Ms. Sullivan will be visiting classes regarding Jardine’s Policy on rumors, bullying, emotional and physical violence, and harassment. All students and staff have the right to be safe at school.

Behaviors that compromise student safety will not be tolerated.

All known safety issues are to be reported to a counselor, administrator, school resource officer, or trusted Jardine staff member.

Parents are encouraged to report any safety concerns to school officials.

Jardine students and staff:

Will not spread rumors, bully others, use physical violence, racial or sexual harassment.

When safe, will help others who are victims of these behaviors.

Will include students who feel left out

Will tell an adult at home and school when we know a student is a victim of these action or any unsafe behavior.

Spreading rumors is defined as passing unwanted, untrue or hur tful information about another student verbally, in writing, e-mail, or by repeating and/or encouraging rumors by receiving rumors (verbally or in writing). Frequently, extreme conflicts, threats of violence, or violence are a result of rumors. Bullying is identified as any ongoing physical or verbal mistreatment that involves an imbalance of power and the victim is exposed repeatedly to negative actions on the part of one or more students. Emotional & Physical Violence occurs when anyone inflicts or threatens to inflict physical or emotional injury upon another student’s body or feelings. Racial Harassment (Board Policy #8110) “The Board of Education is committed to providing a positive and productive learning and working environment, free from discrimination, including harassment, on the basis of race, color, or national origin. Discrimination or harassment on the basis of race, color, or national origin (‘racial harass-ment’) shall not be tolerated in the school district. Racial harassment of employees or students of the district by Board members, administrators, certificated or support personnel, students, vendors, or any other person having business or other contact with the school district is strictly prohibited.” Jardine supports and follows the district guidelines. Sexual Harassment is defined as unwanted and unwelcome behavior of a sexual nature. Sexual Harassment can be in verbal, written, physical, or nonverbal form. Sexual harassment will not be tolerated at Jardine Middle School.

Students with reports of these behaviors should complete an anonymous safety report which is available in “A” Office or outside the counselors’ offices. Students can also receive safety report upon request from their classroom teacher.
