    met at Camp Weld in 1864 to negotiate a peacesettlement. Participants included Black Kettle (middle

    row, center), Edward Wynkoop (ront row, let), and Silas

    Soule (ront row, right).Above:On November 28, 1864,

    Jesse Haire and other soldiers stationed at Fort Lyon,

    Colorado, were ordered to leave on an expedition with

    Col. John Chivingtons troops. They marched through

    the night, and at dawn the next day, they launched a

    surprise attack at Sand Creek.
