Where has this year gone …? As my term draws to a close, I would like to thank each and every one of you for your deep faith in the leadership of your Board of Directors, Committee Leaders and our ever-so-diligent AHA staff based in Chicago. Collectively, their contemporary thinking and commitment to the growth of AHCAP brought us through another outstanding year. We accomplished our goals and worked together as a team to achieve them. I am in awe of our past leaders for their guidance, tenacity and grit. AHCAP would not enjoy the reputation and benefits it does today, if not for them. Our future is very bright. AHCAP has led by example to build a healthy and vibrant future for its membership. We must have a clear focus on today’s challenges and be ready to embrace those of tomorrow. Our nation’s healthcare environment will be very different in a matter of a few years and we will face a tough political environment as well. As tomorrow’s healthcare professionals, each of us will personally face many obstacles as we work and care for more patients with less financial and human resources. I want to personally thank you for your commitment to AHCAP and to the healthcare profession. I will leave you now with profound thanks for a wonderful year and with the words of the beautiful Prayer of St Francis of Assisi the universal prayer for healthcare workers: Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace: where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon, where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light, and where there is sadness, joy. In 2003, Barnes-Jewish Hospital(BJH) became Missouri’s first adulthospital to receive Magnetdesignation from the prestigiousAmerican Nurses CredentialingCenter.

Recognized as the gold standard for nursing excellence in the UnitedStates, Magnet status is the highestlevel of recognition awarded tohealthcare organizations. Therecognition is termed “Magnet”because the nursing culture in anorganization is one that enables the hospital to attract and retainoutstanding nurses.

“In addition to elevating nursingcare, keeping more nurses bettersatisfied is the main reason BJHpursued Magnet designation,” saysCoreen Vlodarchyk, Vice Presidentof Patient Care Services. “Magnetprovides a road map for bestpractices and processes that impactevery area of the nursingprofession.”

Every four years Magnet hospitalsare required to become recertified. This means that documentation and data that trends BJH processesand programs since 2003 will besubmitted for evaluation.

The hospital must demonstrate thatit continues to promote the higheststandards of nursing care, nursingleadership, continued education and certification of staff, with anemphasis on teamwork andinterdisciplinary collaboration.

The “Forces of Magnetism,” whichprovide the foundation for Magnetrecognition and form the basis forexcellence in nursing care, werefirst identified through researchdone in 1983. They include:

Quality of nursing leadership

Organizational structure

Management style

Personnel policies and programs

Professional models of care

Quality of care

Quality improvement

Consultation and resources

Autonomy

Community and the hospital

Nurses as teachers

Image of nursing

Interdisciplinary relationships

Professional development

“Magnet recognition is a team effortthat requires the participation of ourentire organization. Every nursingunit has a Magnet champion whowill share this information and serveas a resource for everyone on theirunit,” says Tina Ahearn, BJHMagnet coordinator.

Other hospitals are also recognizingthe importance and benefits ofMagnet designation. When BJHbecame a Magnet hospital four

years ago, there were less than 50 Magnet hospitals in the country. Now there are 225 hospitals withthe Magnet designation including St Louis Children’s Hospital andBoone Hospital Center, althoughBJH is still the only adult Magnethospital in St Louis.

Says Ahearn, “Magnet designationhas provided an additional standardin nursing care for us to reach andmaintain, which goes hand in handwith the hospital’s mission of takingexceptional care of people.”

SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEEThe Scholarship Committee hasworked hard this year to informmembers of the AHCAP ScholarshipProgram and encourage submissionsfor these available funds. We arepleased to report that we received thehighest number of applications to date. This indicates that scholarships are a valuable benefit to our members.Scholarships are made possible by the support of our Board but moreimportantly you, our members, and the generous support you provide byparticipating in the ScholarshipFundraising raffle and other initiativesthroughout each year.

The intent of the AHCAP ScholarshipProgram is to give members theopportunity to attend the annualconference by defraying mostconference expenses for those whowould otherwise not be able to attend.

Also this year, the cHAP Scholarship was awarded to an AHCAP memberapplying for cHAP designation. Theintent of this award is to defray costsof certification (application/exam) forAHCAP members whose organizationsdo not cover expenses of this nature.

The Scholarship Committee hasalways focused on our members and their educational needs. Since itsinception in 2004, with your generoussupport the Scholarship Program hasgiven fifteen colleagues an opportunityto attend the Annual Conference andtwo additional members have beengiven the monies needed to taken thecHAP certification exam.

This year Conference ScholarshipsAwards of $1,700 each were given to three members for attendance atthe AHCAP 2008 Annual Conference.

Subject: Why we are so important

A large company recently hiredseveral cannibals as it was expandingquickly and couldn't find enough staff.

"You are all part of our team now",said the HR rep during the welcomingbriefing.

"You get all the usual benefits and youcan go to the canteen on the GroundFloor for something to eat, but pleasedon't eat any of our other employees".

The cannibals promised they wouldnot. Four weeks later their bossremarked, "You're all working veryhard and I'm satisfied with your work. However, one of our administrativeassistants has disappeared. Do any

of you know what happened to her?"

The cannibals all shook their heads"No".

After the boss had left, the leader ofthe cannibals said to the others,

"Which one of you idiots ate theAdministrative Assistant?"

A hand rose hesitantly.

"You fool!" the leader continued. "Forfour weeks we've been eatingmanagers and no one noticedanything. But, NOOOooo, you had togo and eat someone who actuallyworks!"

Julie Osgood is an ExecutiveAssistant at New HampshireHospital Association in Concord.

“It was 27 years ago, this month, that I began working at the NewHampshire Hospital Association. I joined AHCAP many years ago, under pressure from my long timefriend and business acquaintance,Donna Zebe of AHA. Both weregood decisions.

I had previously been part of agroup organized by AHA’s Region1 and 2 Executive Assistants. The group assembled in 1979 andI became a member in 1988 when I was promoted to ExecutiveAssistant. We met once a yearalternating between the regions. This group met until 2002 whenthe decision was made to disband

and take advantage of theeducational and networkingopportunities available throughAHCAP--not to mention theopportunities to visit other parts ofthe country.

Those meetings were a greatopportunity for networking and stilltoday that is the benefit of AHCAPthat I enjoy most. This year Iserved on the AHCAPMembership Committee and havemet so many peers and friends inthat capacity. As a committee, ourgoal is to recruit 700 members bythe time of the annual conferencein Boston and we are almostthere!

I encourage everyone to takeadvantage of the opportunitiesthat AHCAP offers, especially the

annual conference. The sessions meet the specific needs ofHealthcare AdministrativeProfessionals!”

If you plan to attend theconference, or get the opportunityto serve with Julie on an AHCAPCommittee in the future, be sure to congratulate her on 20 yearswith AHCAP and thank her for her many contributions to ourAssociation.

The Certified Healthcare Administrative Professionalprogram – cHAP – was launched to a veryappreciative audience. While the EducationCommittee, Board of Directors, and Chicago staffhad expected some interest in the program, theresponse from members and others inquiring aboutthe program has been incredible.

Congratulations to all of our Certified HealthcareAdministrative Professionals. On April 19, 2007,Sandra Midkiff, Bonnie Sanderlin and Carol Slaterwere the first to complete the test and be awardedcertification. Since that time, 16 have joined theseprestigious ranks (listed below).

Our cHAP recipients have admirably demonstrated their ability to view and understand overarchingprinciples of healthcare administration, while being

attuned and currenton the knowledgeand skills necessaryto manage day-to-day challenges andresponsibilities.

Handling the administration of the exam has beeneye-opening as each of these individuals brings adiverse set of professional and educationalexperiences to the examination process. They aresetting the bar for ever-higher standards amonghealthcare administrative professionals.

One of the most recent AHCAPmembers to receive her cHAPdesignation is René Dean,Administrative Secretary to theVice President of Patient CareServices and Chief Nursing Officerof Stormont-Vail HealthCare, inTopeka, Kansas. Although arelative newcomer to her currentposition, René has a 20-yearbackground in healthcare, 17 ofwhich were as a Dental PracticeManagement Administrator for anoral and maxillofacial surgerypractice. Having a keenappreciation of the value ofprofessional certification, Renéalso earned certifications as aCertified Dental Assistant (CDA)and a Certified Dental PracticeManagement Administrator(CDPMA).

René’s first year at Stormont-Vailwas as the Assistant to theDirector of PerformanceImprovement. Upon taking herpresent position, Mrs Deanimmediately sought outadministrative professionalorganizations for their educationaland networking opportunities.René first joined the InternationalAssociation of AdministrativeProfessionals (IAAP) and thenalso became an active member ofher local IAAP “Kaw Chapter”.She recently co-chaired theirchapter nominating committee andhas future plans to run for aDirector position on the chapter’sExecutive Board. René tookadvantage of certificationopportunities through IAAP;studying and passing the rigoroustest to achieve the CPS

designation (Certified ProfessionalSecretary). She also sat for theCAP (Certified AdministrativeProfessional) examination.

After achieving the CPScertification, René Dean beganlooking for an organizationspecifically geared towardhealthcare. She found and joinedAHCAP in the fall of 2007.

René stated, “I was impressed bythe requirements one had to meetbefore being eligible to even takethe exam.” She appreciated thevalue behind the requirement toprove her skill set and validate theinformation being provided. Usingthe traditional program, shesubmitted the necessaryinformation and began studying. While friends and family “thought Iwas crazy,” René got “knee deepin healthcare governance”. Herhospital library proved to be anexcellent resource.

One might wonder if René is aperson with lots of time on herhands. Oh contraire! She is quitethe busy mother of her fifth gradeson, Connor, who “challenges herparenting skills at every turn.” MrsDean is in her second term asPTO President of Connor’selementary school, serves on theschool district site council and wasrecently appointed to the Board ofEducation Strategic PlanningCommittee. She also has apassion for antique dip pens, inkwells, and a finely pennedletter. René is a member of theInternational Association of MasterPenmen, Engrossers and

Teachers of Handwriting, theoldest and largest penmanshiporganization in the United States.

When asked how she wouldadvise others who are consideringcHAP certification, René said sheenjoyed the challenge and foundthe test to be well written, healthcare driven, and at anappropriately challenging level. The regulatory and governanceareas were her biggestchallenges, so she recommendsconcentration on JointCommission requirements.

René says she learned much bystudying for this exam. “Futurethinking” René says, helps her inher daily work, strengthens herability to serve her Vice President, and hospital well.

René has a desire to serve as arole model for others within herorganization. She recognizes theimportance of education and ofprofessionalism.

René Dean, I believe you are an inspiration to your peers!Congratulations on achieving yourcHAP designation!
