Background of Ergonomics
Ergonomics – How people relate to their work & home environments.– For you this means school.
Ergonomics is partly physical, and partly environmental.
Improper ergonomics leads to injuries, and other health problems.
How Ergonomics Relates to Technology
Physically:– Posture– Stretching– Exercise
Environmental– Uncluttered work area– Computer Placement– Monitor placement
Physical Ergonomics
Good Posture– Sit upright– Chin in– Shoulders relaxed– Wrists straight– Head upright– Feet flat
Stretches– Finger/wrist– Arm– Neck– Back
Exercises– Finger-flutter– Blink often
Environmental Ergonomics
Uncluttered workspace– Keep papers at monitor
level.– Easy access to mouse
and keyboard.– Room for chair
movement
Monitor Placement– Top of the screen
should be even with eye level.
– Near arms length away.
Possible Injuries
Repetitive-Stress Injuries– Carpal Tunnel
Muscle Related Injuries– Muscle Strains– Headaches– Eye Strain– Fatigue
Major Points
Maintain Good Posture! Change Work Positions Frequently! Rest Your Eyes – Look away and focus on a
distant object for several seconds! Stretch During Breaks! Don’t wait until you feel pain to stop an
activity!
