introduction We are excited to provide a Chromebook for every third through fifth grade student in Alexander County Schools. We believe having their own Chromebook will help our students learn in new and exciting ways. Students will be learning the technology sills that are essential for critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication.    Your student’s Chromebook will open a new world of learning possibilities. It will also give your student and you, the parent or guardian, important new responsibilities.  In the pages that follow, we introduce you to your student’s new Chromebook, explain how to care for it, provide procedures, and list important rules for using it safely.    Video Introduction link   Video How to Set Up Home Wifi and Zscaler Account  Receiving the Chromebook The Chromebooks are the property of Alexander County Schools, and students will use them during the school year to complete assignments. Students and parents or guardians need to complete and submit all required paperwork before a Chromebook is assigned to a student.  Technology Fee Alexander County Schools requires that a technology fee be paid prior to deployment of the Chromebook to your child. The annual fee of $15.00 per device will cover/include individual student insurance and protective cover.  Returning the Chromebook Students who withdraw or unenroll from Alexander County Schools for any reason must return the district Chromebook, protective cover, power adapter, and cable in working condition on or before the date of withdrawal.  Opting Out Parents or Guardians have the right to ask that their student does not use a Chromebook or other technology resources provided by Alexander County Schools. You should be aware that the decision to limit or eliminate access to technology resources will significantly affect your student’s ability to work collaboratively on projects and assignments, and will hamper the development of skills. For more information on how to restrict technology use by your student, please contact your student’s school.    What is Personalized Learning?

North Carolina Department of Instruction and Alexander County Schools believe that  today’s digital-age classroom provides structures and supports for each student to have learning experiences based upon their individual needs and aspirations. With the support and guidance of their teachers, students in these student-centered learning environments can develop the agency to set goals, to make informed decisions about their learning, and to navigate their progress in a setting that is flexible and adaptable. Click here to read about North Carolina’s definition of Personalized Learning.  Why provide a Chromebook for every student? A Chromebook is a powerful technology device. When each student has a Chromebook just for his or her own use, the device can be personalized to meet individual interests and learning styles. Chromebooks include a camera (if Principals approve to turn them on), access to wifi, a word processor, access to Learning Management Systems, and access to Chromebook extensions. Chromebooks also come with built-in features that make learning easy and enjoyable for all students. Chromebooks are easy to carry and their batteries last a long time, so learning can take place anywhere.  Video Link to Device Introduction   Chromebook Basics The Chromebook is a small computer that has a screen that can be easily damaged. Chromebooks are useful and sturdy when cared for properly. Alexander County Schools would like to tell you about using and taking care of the Chromebook. Please read the pages that follow and be sure to contact your student’s teacher with any questions you might have.    VIdeo Link to Chromebook Basics/Features   What makes a Chromebook go? The Chromebook runs on an internal battery that can be recharged. Use only the Chromebook wall charger provided with your Chromebook to charge the device. Students are responsible for taking care of their chargers and cords and must be kept at home during the school year. They must return them along with the Chromebook at the end of the year or when they leave the Alexander County Schools.   Does the Chromebook come with a protective shell? Yes. Your Chromebook comes with a protective shell. The protective shell will only provide basic protection from everyday use. It is not designed to prevent damage from drops or abusive handling. Please use extreme caution when transporting your Chromebook.

    Cables and Cords

● Please be careful when you plug a cable or cord into your Chromebook. This will prevent damage to the device.

● Do not force a cable or plug into a Chromebook. ● Use only the district-provided Chromebook power adapter to charge the

Chromebook. ● Do not write on or make any permanent marks on the cables or power

adapter.  Video Link to Chromebook Cables and Cords  How do I care for the screen? To clean the screen use a soft, soft, dry anti-static, or microfiber cloth -- to wipe off the Chromebook. Never use window cleaners, household chemicals or cleaners, ammonia, alcohol or alcohol-based products, or other abrasives to clean your Chromebook. They could remove the special coating and/or scratch the screen. Also, do not use compressed air to clean ports (the little openings on the edges of the Chromebooks where cords are plugged in).To protect the screen while you are moving through the halls at school, close the Chromebook and carry the Chromebook in front of your body and avoid bumping into other students. The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure on the screen.

● Do not lean on top of the Chromebook. ● Do not place anything near the Chromebook that could put pressure on the

screen. ● Do not place anything in the carrying case that will press against the cover. ● Do not poke the screen. ● Do not place anything on the keyboard before closing the lid (e.g. pens, pencils,

notebooks, earbuds).  Video Link to Chromebook Care  Chromebook Distractions Any electronic device can be a distraction and disrupt the sleep cycle if used right before bedtime. To discourage late-night, unmonitored use of the Chromebook, experts suggest that families store it and other electronic devices in a common room of the home. Identify a central location in your home where students should store and charge their device.

For Students - Responsible Uses Chromebooks can be a wonderful educational tool. Alexander County Schools (ACS) is excited to be able to provide each third through fifth grade student with Chromebooks for use at school and home. Responsibilities come with the privilege of Chromebook use, and some uses are not allowed. Students may use district resources to create files and projects for school related work, research, and college and career planning. Students will:

● follow all district and classroom policies, procedures and guidelines when using technology.

● treat others with respect and use appropriate language in all electronic interactions with others.

● immediately tell a teacher or other adult staff member if an electronic comment or communication is received that makes them feel uncomfortable, or if they accidentally access inappropriate materials, pictures, video, or websites.

● respect the work and intellectual property rights of others, and will not intentionally copy, damage, or delta another user’s work.

● students will properly cite their sources when they use someone’s information, pictures, media, or other work in their own projects and assignments.

● respect the privacy of others. Students will limit all in-school photography, video and audio recording to educational use.

● students will use the Chrome browser to access the internet and Learning Management Systems

Video Link to Chromebook Responsibility  How do I transport the Chromebook when the weather is bad?  Always protect your Chromebook from the weather. Avoid exposing your Chromebook to extreme temperatures by keeping it in its case at all times. Always carry it in a backpack when outside. Also:

● do not leave your Chromebook in heat above 95℉ . ● do not leave your Chromebook in cold temperatures below 32℉. ● keep the Chromebook away from water and extreme humidity.

Video Link to Your Device and the Weather  Keeping Your Chromebook Safe A Chromebook is a valuable device and could be the target of theft. To make sure this doesn’t happen:

● never leave the Chromebook unattended in school or out of school.

● do not leave or store the Chromebook in a vehicle. ● do not lend the Chromebook to another person. You are solely responsible for

the care and security of your Chromebook. ● do not use the Chromebook or allow it to be visible when waiting at a bus stop

or when walking in the community. ● carry the Chromebook to and from school in a bookbag so that it is not visible. ● do not leave a Chromebook on the floor or ground, even if it is in a bookbag. It

could be stepped on and damaged. ● a username and password will be required to prevent unauthorized access to

your personal information on the Chromebook. Do not share your username and password with anyone else.

Video Link to Chromebook Safety  Is the information on my Chromebook safe? Digital identifications, email addresses, and the usernames and passwords for online systems and accounts, are for the students use only and should remain confidential. Never share your username and password with others and do not use another person’s username and password.    Using the Chromebook at School Your assigned Chromebook is intended for school use and must be brought to school every day with a fully charged battery. Students must bring their Chromebook to all classes, unless a teacher specifically instructs them not to do so. Students are responsible for completing all course work, even if they leave their assigned Chromebook at home. All activity on the Chromebook and district-issued email account, and Google Apps account, whether conducted at school or off-site, is subject to search as district property.    Google Apps for Education Students have access to G Suite Apps (formerly known as Google Apps for Education), an online suite of productivity tools. All teachers and students are provided Google Apps accounts. These accounts allow users to create and share collaborative presentations, documents, spreadsheets, and drawings. These items are created and housed within our Alexander County Schools domain. Additionally, students have access to an email account generated by Alexander County Schools. Students shall limit email use to communicating with teachers and other students within the Alexander County Schools domain. Students should not share passwords for Alexander County Schools Google accounts.  How are apps selected for student use? Alexander County Schools choose appropriate extensions through the G Suite App Store. These extensions:

For questions about these extensions contact Dr. Betsy Curry at [email protected].    Managing Your Files and Saving Your Work  G Suite Apps (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drawings and Forms) automatically save to a student’s Google Drive. In addition, students may save images and documents to their Google Drive. Saving to Google Drive will make the file accessible from any computer with internet access. Students using Google Drive to work on their documents will not need to save their work, as Drive will save each keystroke as the work is being completed. It will be the responsibility of the student to maintain the integrity of their files and keep proper backups. Students will be trained on proper file management procedures.  Is the battery full? Students must bring the Chromebook to school every day with a fully charged battery. If the battery is not charged, students may not be able to participate in classroom learning activities.  Can I print from the Chromebook? Printing functionality via the Chromebook will not be supported by ACS. Teaching strategies will facilitate digital copies of homework. This supports college and career readiness for students and will help schools save paper.  Sound Sound must be muted at all times unless permission is obtained from the teacher for instructional purposes. Students are responsible for having their own headphones or earbuds. Classroom teachers will not provide headphones and earbuds for student use.   Video Link to Device Sound   What if the Chromebook is being repaired? Students will need to inform their teacher if their Chromebook needs to be repaired. Do not attempt to gain access to internal electronics or repair your Chromebook. If the Chromebook fails to work or is damaged, contact your teacher or school staff to report the problem as soon as possible. ● modify the operating system, add restrictions, remove security profiles, or vandalize district technology resources.

● install any apps or software.  Monitor and Limit Screen Time The Chromebook is a great tool for learning, but it also has the potential to be a distraction. Adult supervision and clear expectations for appropriate use are critical.

● Have your child use the device in a central location in your home, such as the kitchen or living room, so that you can easily monitor and supervise their use.

● Set expectations that your child is to complete assignments and tasks before they use the device to access the internet, play games, or listen to music.

Manage Access When the device is at school on the district network, internet access is managed with the industry standard content filtering tools as required by the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). Content filtering tools cannot guarantee that all undesirable content is blocked. Teachers and staff make every effort to monitor online activity during school hours.  When the device is used at home or on a public WIFI network, students have unrestricted access to the Internet, including inappropriate websites and content. Parents with a home wireless network can filter it by installing special filtering software. Many cell phone and cable providers also offer filtering solutions. Simply do a Google search with your internet provider’s name and the terms “Parental Controls,” to learn more.  Video Link to Parent and Guardian Expectations
