DIARY DATES

D &Ri can announce that three more speakers have been confirmed

for the conference programme at the 2014 World Demolition Summit at the NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolski in Amsterdam on November 6, 2014.

First, Safedem managing director and NFDC president William Sinclair will discuss how explosive demolition is applied as part of inner city regeneration projects. Safedem has carried out a number of high profile and challenging tower block explosive demolition projects across Scotland in recent years, assisting a number of housing agencies with the clearance of outdated mass housing complexes dating back to the early 1960s. Safedem

was also initially charged with the demolition of five of the Red Road towers in Glasgow as part of the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony. These plans were subsequently changed and all six of the remaining towers will be brought down in a simultaneous blowdown at a date to be announced – a presentation on this project is certain to be a highlight of next year’s World Demolition Summit.

Also now confirmed for the event is Cardem’s Patrick Frye, who will tackle the thorny issue

of asbestos remediation as part of demolition projects. The French regulations that govern his company’s activities where this hazardous substance is concerned have recently been changed and he will discuss the implications for the industry of the adoption of the new standards.

Another familiar figure will take to the stage on the day in the shape of ERM’s Robert Klotzbach, who will discuss work that his company is currently engaged on in Japan, where the company is carrying out the demolition of two silicon chip production plants.

Full details on the three presentations will shortly be available on www.demolitionsummit.com ■

Nuclear decommissioning agreement reached

Sellafield Ltd, responsible for the decommissioning of Sellafield, Europe’s most complex nuclear facility in Cumbria, UK, has signed a formal agreement of cooperation with Japanese company TEPCO FEDC, who in turn is responsible for the decontamination of the Fukushima nuclear power station that was devastated by the 2011 tsunami.

The agreement will see the transfer and knowledge and experience between the two, give TEPCO access to the skills available from SMEs engaged in the Sellafield Ltd supply chain and in turn provide access for the UK to advancements made at Fukushima over the coming years.

Sellafield Ltd managing director Tony Price said: “We have much that we can help the Japanese with initially, as they move their focus from power generation and to cleaning up and decommissioning. But the technical expertise of the Japanese is renowned the world over, they are experts in design and manufacturing and, judging by their past performance on everything from motorcycles to nuclear reprocessing – once they start decommissioning in earnest there will be much that they can teach us.”

“What this co-operation statement will do is formalise a working relationship which has existed for 60 years between the UK nuclear industry and

the Japanese, and it opens up channels for us to work more closely together now and in the future. There are many similar challenges that we’ll be facing on our sites over the coming years and we can share our experiences, access to our supply chains and any advancements that come in the future. This will make sure we are both better equipped to deliver our respective missions.” ■Sellafield Ltd managing director Tony Price with the president of TEPCO FDEC,

It would require US$2 billion (€1.5 billion) to deal with the 40,000 structures in Detroit, USA, requiring demolition out of the 85,000 identified as suffering from blight, a recent report produced by Detroit’s Blight Removal Task Force says. The US city has targeted US$456 million (€340 million) that can be used for blight removal, including US$88 million (€66 million) from various federal programmes.

WORLD NEWS

IN MEMORIAM

Marcel SchrõderIt is with the greatest of regret that D&Ri carries the news of the untimely and sudden death on the 15 May 2014 of Richard Liesegang’s technical director Marcel Schroder at the age of 43.

In addition to his full time position, since 2010 he had also served as the Deutscher Abbruchverband’s board member responsible for training and professional development, European affairs and the Association’s finances. He was also an active member of the Blasting Technology Working Group, lead author of the forthcoming new edition of the DA’s technical publication “Abbrucharbeiten” (Demolition Work) and a member of the Board of Directors of the European Demolition Association (EDA).

Thanks to his exceptional commitment during his time as a Board member at the German Demolition Association, Marcel Schröder was able to make a number of important contributions to the industry, the impact of which will continue to be felt in the future.

In addition to his work with Liesegang and the DA, Marcel Schroder was also a member of the judging panel for the World Demolition Awards, succeeding Walter Werner in that position. D&Ri and his fellow judges would like to extend the greatest sympathy to his family. He will be sorely missed by all.

IRock Crushers has appointed Dan Davis to the position of western region manager with a focus on sales, distribution and application

training in the western USA. According to Sean Donaghy, IRock national sales manager: “Dan is very adept in sales training, application analysis, market penetration and market share growth. These are essential skills for continuing to develop and serve our western region, and his proactive approach will be right at home on the IRock team.”

Cherry’s Travis Schultz, who has been with this US demolition contractor in a number of roles over the last 15 years,

has been promoted to the post of divisional manager of the company’s Commercial Demolition division. According to VP of Commercial Demolition Mike Dokell: “Travis started out at the ground level and through hard work and dedication has worked his way up to become a valuable asset to our team.”

2015 Awards deadline approachesThe closing date for the 2014 World Demolition Awards is Thursday July 31, 2104, with no entries being accepted after that date. Full details on how to enter are available at www.demolitionsummit.com, along with downloadable entry forms in Acrobat pdf and Microsoft Word format.

The Award categories have been refreshed this year to offer an opportunity for those smaller contractors who might have in the past might have been put off from submitting entries through the thought of competing against the ‘giants’ of the demolition industry in the Contract of the Year category. The result is that there are now three separate

categories for this award, depending on contract value.

Companies can make multiple entries in individual categories, or across a number of individual categories, BUT a specific project can only be entered for one category and cannot be entered for two or more individual Awards.

If you have any questions concerning the Awards in general or concerning the submission of entries, please contact the editor of D&Ri, Lindsay Gale. ■

Waste fi rst for British ColumbiaA new demolition waste sorting facility has been established at the Okanagan Falls landfill, considered to be the first of its type in the interior of British Columbia, Canada, to reduce the amount of material going into the landfill and thus saving space at the facility. Owned by the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS), the new sorting facility has been contracted out to Wildstone Environmental in a deal worth C$350,000 (€237,000) a year. The aim is to direct most of the region’s demolition waste to the facility, which is expected to process up to 5,000 tonnes of material per year.

Up to 10 workers will be required for the facility, provided by Penticton and Area Co-operative Enterprise.

WORLD NEWS

Asbestos issues are rearing their head in the New Zealand city of Christchurch, with anecdotal evidence suggesting that insufficient concern has been shown to possible exposure to the hazardous material during recovery demolition work following the earthquake. There are suggestions that up to 60,000 people could have been exposed to the substance and a multi-governmental agency review of the issue is currently underway.

In China, seven men accused of illegally demolishing the 200 year old Yangxi Bridge to make way for a real estate project have been detained by Guangdong police with one suspect remaining at large. The 50 m (164 ft) long, 4.5 m (14.8 ft) wide stone arch bridge, which stood 7.3 m (40 ft) above the water, was declared a protected relic by the county government in 2010. Developer Guangdong Changhong wanted to make space for a riverside plaza as part of a commercial estate that went on sale in February. By the early morning of May 1, residents were shocked to find that workers had bulldozed the bridge and dumped the debris into the river before hastily leaving the scene, leaving some of the work unfinished.

Date confi rmed for second Istanbul demolition conferenceAfter a postponement that resulted from the Turkish election held in March and the subsequent delay in the development and issuance of government legislation covering the demolition industry in that country, we can now announce the date for the next Demolition Conference Turkey, organised jointly by D&Ri publisher KHL and its Turkish partner, Apa Yayincilik.

The event will now be held on Thursday March 12, 2015, once again at the Marriot Asia Hotel in Istanbul on the Asian side of the Bosphorus. The event, primarily intended for the developing Turkish demolition industry, will once again see a mix of presentations from relevant speakers from that country as well as from a number of leading figures in the global demolition industry.

The Turkish content will include a presentation from

a representative from the Turkish ministry responsible for the drafting of the new regulations and two from the Turkish Construction Equipment Manufacturers’ Association, IMDER, and the Turkish Demolition Association, respectively. The Turkish content will be rounded off with a case study covering one of the most high profile and challenging demolition projects carried out in the country in recent months.

International speakers will cover a number of topics that are certain to be of interest to the nascent Turkish demolition industry. These will include a review of the last word in modern demolition equipment, an outline

Protests halt Barcelona demolition planThe Barcelona city government has halted plans for the demolition and redevelopment of Can Vies, a building housing a squatter’s civic centre, following four nights of rioting in the Catalan capital in June.

The building was abandoned and then occupied by left wing activists in 1997, after which it became the venue for concerts, training courses and community activities in the run-down area of the Spanish city.

The Spanish police forcibly cleared the building on Monday 26 May using the authority of a court order issued following the breakdown of negotiations between the city and the squatters.

This triggered the night-time riots, which saw rioters launching bottles and other missiles at police barricades, with the police in turn responding with baton charges, the firing of rubber bullets and the use of sound emitting devices in attempts to disperse the rioters.

The protest won support across Spain and peaceful demonstrations had been planned in other Spanish cities to show solidarity with the protestors in Barcelona. At an emergence meeting, the city council announced that it would attempt a new dialogue with neighbourhood leaders in an attempt to reach a peaceful agreement.

In Moscow, 114 cheaply built five storey blocks of flats will be demolished this year. The structures were built at a rapid pace during the Khrushchev era to satisfy a growing demand for housing and were never intended to be occupied as long as they have. In 1999, then Moscow mayor Yury Luzhkov instructed that 1,722 be brought down by 2010 but one of the requirements was that residents had to be moved into new housing before the buildings could be demolished.

Over the last 15 years, 1,451 have been brought down, despite that fact that the entire job should have been completed four years ago. However, the economic crisis had a serious impact on the Russian economy and the demolition drive struggled for momentum because potential

of the planning process and documentation requirements involved in delivering a successful demolition project from initial studies through to completion, how to ensure safety on site during demolition work and finally, a study on best practice in recycling the waste that results from a typical demolition project.

Full speaker details and timings will be released in due course. ■

Moscow reactivates demolition drive

investors are risk adverse following the crisis and have been struggling to provide accommodation for the occupiers of the old blocks. Changes to housing regulations also slowed the drive, laying down that Moscow authorities could no longer assign land to developers without carrying out a tendering process.

This year will see 93 blocks being demolished using Moscow authority funds and the remainder (21) by private investors, meaning that the clearance work in five of the city’s 12 administrative districts will have been completed. Of the remaining outstanding demolitions, city construction chief Andrei Bochkaryov was reported by the Moscow Times as saying that no more than 30 will be left by the beginning of 2016. ■

The technological choice

Hitachi is renowned for the reliability and versatility of its medium excavator range.

The new Zaxis-5 models benefit from several technologically advanced features

that deliver unrivalled levels of productivity and efficiency. Take the unique TRIAS

hydraulic system: it combines the use of a control valve with three pumps to

significantly reduce fuel consumption. This has a huge impact on profitability to

prove that Hitachi is the technological choice.

EXCAVATORS

>10

W hen contractors are working on site, they look for a sturdy, reliable machine that will get the

job done in optimum time at the lowest cost, maximising on fuel efficiency and labour. A new breed of excavator is now emerging that is both fuel-efficient and offers greater cab comfort to help contractors get the most out of their personnel. Excavators are being redefined to be clean, lean and resourceful - be they be new, low exhaust emission models for Europe, Japan and the USA, or new models for countries with lower (or minimal) standards.

SIZE MATTERSIn the infrastructure segment of course, the scale of projects often dictates that the bigger classes of earthmoving machines are used. And with many of the largest projects taking place in emerging markets, manufacturers are putting more and more emphasis on larger, more powerful and more efficient machines for these regions.

Caterpillar’s new 336D2 (Series 2), for example, is a powerful and productive 36 tonne machine that offers an improved fuel system and enhanced hydraulics. It uses the Cat C9 ACERT engine that can meet either US EPA Tier 2 or Tier 3 equivalent emissions standards. The C9 engine provides electronic fuel and air management to ensure optimum performance. The engine runs at a constant speed of 1,700 rpm, which also contributes to fuel economy and reduced noise levels.

Meanwhile, Cat’s improved hydraulic system features a new electric pressure sensor that reduces hydraulic flow from the pump during light-load or no-load situations, which also helps conserve fuel.

The 336D2 is available in standard and long undercarriage and contractors can choose from two booms and five sticks. The excavator offers a maximum dig depth of 8 m and a horizontal outreach of 11.6 m.

Back in more developed regions, JCB has updated its crawler excavator in the same class, the 38.3 tonne JS360, with a new Tier 4 Interim engine.

The various sets of exhaust

emission regulations around

the world are driving

developments in the hydraulic

excavator market like no other.

The result is increasingly

energy efficient excavators with

a more comfortable operator

environment. Sarah McCay

reports for D&Ri.

Digging deepThe JS360 is now powered by a six-cylinder

7.8 litre Isuzu engine, which according to JCB, provides operators with fuel savings of up to 8% compared with the Tier 3 machine. This highly efficient unit produces 210 kW (281 hp) at 1,900 rpm, driving a twin-pump load sensing hydraulic system to deliver strong digging performance. When equipped with a 6.5 m (21.4 ft) main boom and a 2.2 m (7.2 ft) dipper arm, the JS360 delivers 25,300 kgf of dipper tearout and 27,716 kgf of bucket tearout force.

The JS360 is also available in an XD demolition specification or with a 21 m (68.9 ft) long reach boom for waterway maintenance and dredging operations. The JS360LC XD features added protection for both the machine and the operator, including an XD cage for the cab, heavy duty undercarriage and side impact protection.

Meanwhile, New Holland’s E385C crawler excavator, which weighs in at 38 tonnes, is equipped with a powerful common-rail engine to maximise fuel efficiency. It offers

UK contractor B B Enterprises, based in Gloucester, has taken delivery of a Stage IIIB-compliant 14 tonne Doosan DX140LC-3 that it is now using in its demolition and decommissioning activities.Recently delivered by Kellands (Plant Sales) Ltd, Doosan authorised dealer for south west England, B B Enterprises’ new DX140LC-3 was first used on a delicate job in Cheltenham where it had to work in between two Grade II Listed buildings to bring down a disused office. It was then moved to demolish an extension at a former care home, where it was teamed with a smaller 7.5 tonne Doosan Solar 75V owned by the company.

Kobelco's has launched the SK260LC in the European market

an Eco work mode and meets Stage IIIB emission regulations by way of its integrated cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. Designed for heavy-duty work, the E385C comes with a Bulk Excavator Heavy (BEH) configuration, which includes a shorter monoboom and powered bucket linkage to give greater stability and higher breakout force. A bigger bucket is available for the E385C BEH that can carry 18% more material than the standard version.

At the lighter end of the excavator spectrum, Komatsu has introduced its 18-tonne PC170LC-10 to the European market. Following on from the PC160LC-8, Komatsu says the Dash-10 offers between

5% and 15% more lift capacity. Driven by an 86 kW (115 hp) engine with a variable-flow turbocharger, the PC170LC-10 is also up to 10% more fuel efficient than its predecessor.

CAB COMFORTTipping the scales at 42.6 tonnes, the new Hyundai R430LC-9A is the latest addition to the Robex excavator range. The new Stage IIIB machine, which is being rolled-out across Europe, slots in between the existing R380LC-9A and the R480LC-9A. The R430LC-9A’s new economy mode helps operators conserve fuel. According to Hyundai, it offers a fuel saving of 5% when compared to previous models.

However, what sets this excavator apart is the focus on operator comfort.

The R430LC-9A features the Hyundai -9A cab, which offers a fully adjustable suspension seat and armrests. The joystick consoles are also adjustable in height to ensure less operator fatigue. A fully automatic air-conditioning system provides a constant ambient temperature. In-cab technology includes a 178 mm (7 inch) LCD colour touch screen for programming personal machine preferences, including work modes, self-diagnostics, maintenance check lists and start-up machine security codes. The screen also enables the operator to see the rear view

Case keeps river flowingA Case CX130 machine specially equipped with a hydraulic rotating grab was used to clear the River Severn in the UK. WM Plant Hire, based in Shropshire, provided the long reach excavator to clear 500 tonnes of debris from the arches of Worcester’s historic bridge. This had built up following recent flooding and there was concern the lodged debris could restrict the flow of water and cause additional lateral loading and stress on the bridge structure.

The project was co-ordinated by the local council, emergency services, environment agency, and highway authorities. WM Plant Hire operates one of the largest fleets of long reach excavators in the UK.

German demolition and earthmoving contractor Althammer GmbH, established in 1978, is in the process of conducting a fleet replacement programme with the purchase of various models from Hitachi’s Zaxiz-5 range, a process that began with the purchase of two ZX290LC-5s. The company has made the decision to operate a 100% Hitachi fleet following the purchase of its first Hitachi machines – a ZX130LC-3 and ZX290LC-5 – a couple of years ago. Currently employing a workforce of 30, Althammer’s business is now equally split between earthmoving and demolition activities.

Coleman opts for LiebherrsUK demolition contractor Coleman & Company has ordered a total of six new excavators from Liebherr to help it work on the demolition of the Didcot A Power Station in Oxfordshire. Coleman has recently started work on the three year project that involves the removal of a wide range of structures ranging from office accommodation through main plant installations including the boilers, six cooling towers (long standout features of the Oxfordshire landscape) and a 200 m (656 ft) tall chimney.

The Coleman order consists of three 56 tonne R956 excavators, two 80 tonne R954CVH HDW high reach excavators and a special 120 tonne R974C, all of which have been prepared especially for working in the industrial demolition sector. Liebherr designed a variety of specialist demolition rigs with interchangeability across the six machines, with each with a range of different options available, with interchangeability and versatility being key to the unique offering that will shortly be available to the industrial market. “Liebherr has been able to design a variety of boom configurations for Coleman’s requirements to include a variety of different extensions and high reach options which will enable them to obtain the maximum availability out of the new fleet.” explained Liebherr UK‘s Darren Bennet. “We and Coleman believe that between us we have developed a unique ‘Swiss Army Knife‘ range of demolition excavators.”

“We liked the fact that the Liebherr machines are fully designed and constructed in-house” explained Coleman managing director Mark Coleman. “This means they are fully CE certified and should we have any issues with them, we have a single point of contact with no other outside influence.” He went on to say that his company runs a fairly mixed fleet of demolition specified excavators across four recognised brands. However, the only manufacturer contacted that was able to meet all the detailed demands was Liebherr.

Caterpillar has introduced the 13.9 tonne 311F LRR reduced radius excavator that is powered by a 52 kW (70 hp) Cat C3 4B Stage IIIb compliant engine and has an over the side tail swing of 0.5 m (1.6 ft). According to the company, the unique design of the machine allows for a full ROPS cab, and a 2.45 tonne counterweight provides excellent stability and working capacity. The new machine has a maximum dig depth of 5.6 m (18.4 ft) and a forward reach of 8.1 m (26.6 ft). The main boom is 4.3 m (14.1 ft) and this cab carry sticks with lengths between 2.25 m (7.4 ft) and 2.8 m (9.2 ft).

exhibition in the USA, LuiGong’s 50-tonne 950E excavator follows in the tracks of the Chinese manufacturer’s D series. Again, attention has been paid to operator comfort, with the 950E offering one of the largest cabs in the industry. The windows are widened for better visibility, especially the right downward view for steering and excavation. Enlarged roof glazing with rolling sunshade provides excellent visibility and good ventilation.

The on-board LCD monitor displays machine operational states, warnings, audible alarms and maintenance information in a choice of 10 languages. The monitor also serves as the display for the rear view camera, which improves worksite productivity and safety. A pilot lock handle installed on the handrail box prevents unexpected movement as it interlocks the machine ignition system. LiuGong has also designed its operating handles to be soft and flexible to avoid operator fatigue.

FUEL EFFICIENCYFor contractors looking to maximise on fuel efficiency, hybrid machines could be the answer with technology that captures and reuses energy. Hybrid excavators first entered the market in 2008 and today the technology has been refined to offer up to 30% fuel savings when compared to standard excavators.

Caterpillar’s new 336F H hybrid will soon be available with a Tier 4 Final Cat C9.3 ACERT engine. The machine is one of the most efficient on the market as it offers automatic engine speed control that

Komatsu is an established hybrid manufacturer, having just released its third generation hybrid model to the European market. The new HB215LC-2 hybrid hydraulic excavator has an operating weight of 22.6 tonnes and a bucket capacity of 1.7 m³ (60 ft³). According to Komatsu, the new excavator boasts enhanced hybrid components and a new Komatsu EU Stage 3B engine.

Yoshihiro Kobayashi, product manager for hybrid excavators at Komatsu Europe, said, “The new HB215LC-2 will now provide Komatsu customers with an even higher fuel economy. Actual savings will depend on the application, and fuel efficiency is particularly high when operating the excavator with hydraulic attachments. He added that the extra investment required when buying a Komatsu hybrid machine is typically recovered in less than two years.

Hitachi has also launched a hybrid excavator into the European market. The ZH210LC-5 hybrid combines a hydraulic motor and an eco-friendly electric motor that Hitachi claims can give the same levels of efficiency and smooth swing motion as all its Zaxis 5 models. The manufacturer claims

the new hybrid can reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 31%. Hitachi has incorporated elements from hydraulic, electric and battery-powered excavators to create the

Engine conversion kitJohn Deere Construction & Forestry Division is set to launch an engine retrofit kit that will enable Interim Tier 4 (IT4) machines to be sold in countries where ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD) fuel is not available.

The kit will be compatible with John Deere excavators, as well as crawler dozers, wheel loaders, articulated dump trucks, motor graders and backhoes.

The John Deere retrofit kit maintains engine reliability and durability by disabling or removing sulphur sensitive components and systems. The kit requires minimal hardware updates, while software calibration is used to maintain engine performance. The engine kit is designed for fuel sulphur levels from 15 ppm to well beyond 5,000 ppm - ULSD is diesel fuel with 15 parts of sulphur per million or lower.

JCB JS220 offers site clearance solutionScottish plant hire firm Tom Grant Plant, based in Darvel in Ayrshire, Scotland, has taken delivery of three 20 tonne JCB JS220 tracked excavators as a direct result of an upturn in demand from demolition contractors for mid-sized machines to perform site clearance duties following on from the departure from site of the larger machines used for initial demolition.

Owner Tom Grant said: “With its agility and excellent fuel efficiency thanks to the Ecomax engine, the JS220 is significantly cheaper to run than a large demolition excavator yet able to perform a wide range of handling, cutting and sorting tasks required as part of the demolition process.”

The JS220 is the first JCB machine over 20 tonnes in weight to use the company’s 4.8 litre Ecomax engine. This power unit delivers 129 kW (172 hp) and uses common rail injection, variable geometry turbocharger and full electronic control, which the company claims leads to a 10% reduction in fuel consumption. JCB’s clean burn engine technology means that there is no need for the use of a diesel particulate filter.

The three new machines have been specified with specialist auxiliary pipework, a rotation circuit and directional controls to give enhanced attachment utilisation. They have been put to work on a series of demolition projects across central Scotland picking up steel, wood and building materials, and feeding crushers on site using a range of attachments including buckets and a selector grab.

The new Cat 336D2 (Series 2) can use a wide range of pin-on or coupler-type buckets and work tools

COMPACT CRUSHING

I t has long been said that the prospects for the compact end of the crushing and screening sector are more than promising,

with the regulatory drive towards the use of increased proportions of recycled aggregate products as a component in aggregate mixes for new construction a common feature in many parts of the world. However, the expected upturn in demand for equipment capable of meeting the requirements that the regulations and directives currently or shortly will lay down would still appear to be just over the horizon.

It does have to be said at this point that

Despite challenging market

conditions for the compact

crushing and screening sector

in recent years, the market

appears to be recovering, at

least in some regions of the

world. D&Ri reports

the recycling performance of the demolition industry is nevertheless in reality extremely good in many parts of the world, with many contractors routinely achieving recycling rates well in excess of 90%. It is more the general construction sector where recycling lessons are still to be learned.

However, market conditions for compact crushing and screening solutions have been challenging in recent years in line with the overall downturn experienced by the construction sector in general, but the climate is beginning to see signs of recovery, at least in certain geographical regions of the world.

CRISIS MANAGEMENT?D&Ri caught up with Gerald Hanisch, Rubble Master’s managing director, at the recent Hillhead trade show and asked him about the current situation for his company. He told us: “As you know, the UK has always been an important market for us historically, and it was probably one of our first export markets and one of our largest. This was the case until 2009, when it dropped off substantially, really until the end of 2013. Now it seems that the there is sufficient work out there and our machine’s productivity can meet this demand. It is therefore a good time for us to relaunch the brand in the UK.”

He went on: “We are still in a crisis mode, in a manner of speaking. Some markets are back to where they should be, such as Germany, Switzerland, Austria, North America

and the Far East, but this has not replaced the level of demand we experienced in the past across Europe, and particularly France, Spain, Portugal and the Eastern European countries, which have always been good markets for us.”

He went on to say that the company needs to better coordinate its dealers, its sales and after sales effort. The company intends to stay firmly in the compact equipment sector, which Herr Hanisch said is one of the most appreciated types of machine.

Rubble Master’s product development has always been driven by customer requirements, said Herr Hanisch: “If our customers tell us they need a particular solution, we will develop our equipment offering accordingly. We have customer forums on a regular basis and collect ideas from the market to ensure that we meet our customer’s needs. We perhaps have to diversify the range a little more – our intention is to produce at least one new model per year.”

The Anaconda stand held one major product launch at Hillhead in the shape of the company’s new J960 ECO (see box story), and managing director Con Gallagher expanded on the reason for the company’s move into the mobile crushing sector. He said: “The demand

from our dealer network was clearly pushing us in that direction. We always envisaged that we would produce a full range of screens, crushers and conveyors so it was a logical step, but we probably have moved a little bit sooner than we originally intended based on this demand.”

Con confirmed that having made this first move, further crushing models will be introduced over time with the aim of meeting the company’s initial goal. “We will have a variety of not just larger machines but other crusher types as well,” he told D&Ri .

Overall, the demand for the company’s products has proved greater than it expected: Con said: “When we started out just over four years ago, we could clearly see there was good demand for compact equipment, and as our dealer network grew, demand for our product range grew as well.”

“In general, America has always been our biggest market, even from when we started the business, but the UK market has grown tremendously in the last 18 months. It is busy, after a difficult few years. We have found exceptional dealers in the UK who have been able to get us in with customers in this country.”

Donoghue Waste Management, based in Wembley, London, has taken delivery of a Rubble Master 12 tonne RM60 to help process the 4,000 tonnes on brick, concrete and rock it receives each week. The RM60, powered by a Deutz diesel, is regularly delivering a throughput of 50 to 80 tonnes of material per hour and only takes up 12 m2 (130 ft2) of space at the company’s compact facility. The machine was supplied by distributor Promac Solutions Ltd, who supplies construction and industrial equipment to its customer base in the south east of England.

From the beginning, Anaconda products were designed for transport by sea in containers and it is this that Con believes resulted in the company’s success in America. “Going further away from Ireland was the right thing to do at the time. We were all from the industry when we set up Anaconda and knew that while we could be successful, we looked at what we could do to be different, what else could we offer than just another equipment brand.”

The current economic climate is echoed by Rockster Recycler’s head of sales, Norbert Feichtinger: “In Europe, we can see a slight recovery, with Germany, France and Austria still strong markets for us. Unfortunately, in southern Europe sales have decreased noticeably. Looking to the future, we can see that the Asian continent has great potential as the recycling business is developed in that region step by step. In addition, in America we see an upward trend and will invest in that region more intensively.” The latter point is emphasised by the box story in this article.

Norbert summed up the general situation facing the compact crushing and screening sector for all by saying: “There is still no boom in the crushing business – the recovery will need some more time.”

NEW OFFERINGSAnaconda is not the only compact specialist to bring a new product to market in recent times, with a number of new machines making their appearance. Kleemann was another that used the Hillhead show, among other recent events, to preview a new machine, in this case the contractor class 30 tonne MCO-9 cone crusher that the company says has been designed for easy transport and rapid and simple set-up. According to Kleemann, the new cone can achieve a throughput of up to 250 tonnes/hour and also achieves a higher crushing ratio to produce an end product with a higher fine content in comparison to other cones in its class. It can also be equipped with an anti-spin system that prevents intrinsic spinning and therefore noticeably reduces wear in this

COMPACT CRUSHING

Rockster Recycler establishes US connectionThe establishment of Rockster Recycler North American has been announced with the stated aim of bringing the Austrian company’s range of compact crushing and screening equipment to the North American continent.

Rockster Recycler GmbH, established in 2004, has partnered with recycling industry veterans Stu Gamble and Brian Barlow. The two and their team are currently selling the equipment direct to customers in the continent as they simultaneously develop and support a dealer network across the USA servicing customers in the recycling, demolition and aggregates sectors. The new operation has its headquarters in Fort Wayne, Indiana, with a parts and service centre located in Webster, Massachusetts. Rockster Recycler GmbH has also contracted Barlow Strategic Sales & Marketing to provide sales and dealer development and marketing support to assist Rockster Recycler North America’s development.

“We are looking forward to expanding the reach of our Rockster Recycler line in North America, and are confident that the industry experience Stu Gamble and Brian Barlow bring to this relationship will help us achieve our goals for the North American market,” said Wolfgang Kormann, CEO of Kormann Rockster Recycler GmbH.

“Rockster Recycler has a strong brand recognition and reputation throughout Europe, as well as two very unique crushers in the patented, interchangeable jaw/impactor Duplex System and the hybrid electric and diesel crushing and screening plant,” commented vice president of sales Stu Gamble. He added: “We’re looking forward to growing the North American market and working one-on-one with dealers and

contractors as we target the recycle, rental, construction and demolition market segments, as well as the aggregate market, with highly portable and adaptable mid-range track-mounted crushers and screens.”

Stu Gamble (left) and Brian Barlow head up Rockster Recycler North America, established to service the US and Canadian market

area. A magnet and metal detector are also available as an option to significantly increase operational reliability.

The MCO-9 makes use of the same touch screen panel control system already proven on the company’s other EVO machines. When operated together with the Mobicat MC 110 Z-EVO jaw unit, the two machines' material conveying elements can be optimally adapted to ensure that the MCO-9 always maintains the optimum filling level and a that a high quality end product is produced.

Another launch of note at Hillhead was the Maximus MXC-2 cone, which is a medium to large tracked unit equipped with a 1.2 m (3.9 ft) MSP300 high capacity cone crusher suited to secondary crushing applications that provides excellent reduction ratios, throughput potential and finished material cubicity. The machine is equipped with a Webasto lubrication oil heating system as standard in the lube tank that can be pre-set to heat the oil up to two hours ahead of machine start-up in seven day cycles. A Cat C13 328 kW (440 hp) diesel provides the power for the machine.

Maximus has also reworked its MXJ-1 jaw unit through the use of a new modular design and a user-friendly control system to maximise production capabilities to result in a high performance primary unit for quarrying, mining, recycling and demolition applications. It features a 1.15 x 0.75 m (3.8 x 2.5 ft) jaw box developed for demanding applications and its heavy duty construction results in added strength and durability.

MAKING AN IMPACTAnother new unit, this time an impactor, has been introduced by Austrian specialist Rockster Recycler in the shape of the R1100DS that is intended to offer flexibility, rapid set-up and improved performance. According to Rockster CEO Wolfgang Kormann: “We are optimising our machines continuously so that we can offer the best option on the market for our customers. The fact is that our customers can cover a very broad market segment with the R1100, and there is much potential for this kind of machine. That is why we have constantly being developing this plant, taking into account the ever-increasing safety requirements and placing the focus primarily on the ease of operation, application flexibility and performance.”

The machine’s newly developed multi-

function display allows the crushing gap to be fully adjusted hydraulically and continuously to allow the final product to be defined simply and easily, and to ensure an exact screening curve. Conveying speed continuously adapts the crusher load and the operating pressure of the main conveyor to prevent overload and downtime. If required, the vibrating feeder can be infinitely controlled manually using a remote control system.

The R1100DS can be supplied with a screen/return system to allow for crushing and screening on a single plant. With Rockster’s patented double function return system, the return belt can be used as a stockpile conveyor

COMPACT CRUSHING

Hillhead debut for Anaconda jawOne of the new machines on display at the recent Hillhead show was Anaconda’s first venture into the mobile crushing sector, the 26 tonne J960 ECO jaw crusher with a maximum throughput of 150 tonnes/hour. The new machine has a 0.9 x 0.6 m (3 x 2 ft) jaw opening, a dirt belt, magnet and dual power as standard. The feeder has a grizzly section to remove dirt and a diverter chute that can either remove the dirt completely from the dirt belt or transfer it to the main discharge belt and mix it with the crushed product. Power comes from a 100 kVA Fogo F1100 and an Iveco diesel delivering 87 kW (117 hp). The company claims a fuel consumption of 6 to 8 litres (1.3 to 1.8 gallons) per hour for the latter.

According to technical director Martin Quinn: “I guess people have been wondering when we were going to get into crushing as it is a natural step after screening but we did not take this decision lightly. Crushing is not for the faint-hearted and we have spent considerable time on the J960 ECO project to get it right. A lot of time was spent understanding the features that would really make a difference to potential customers and we have designed this machine with standard items that others would consider as being options.”

The J960 features a discharge height of 2.8 m (9.2 ft), a ground clearance of 0.25 m (8 inches) and a feed height of 3.3 m (10.9 ft). When configured for transport, it is 11.4 m long (37.4 ft), 3.3 m (10.8 ft) high and 2.5 m (8.2 ft wide.

Anaconda’s new J960 ECO is the company’s first mobile jaw crusher, joining its ranges of mobile screens and stackers – Anaconda managing director Con Gallagher and Danny Morgan of Anaconda Sales UK are pictured beside the new crusher

with a discharge height of some 4 m (13 ft). As with the R1100D, the new machine is ‘duplex-able’ – within a few hours, it can be converted from an impactor to a jaw unit, allowing its optimisation for a wide range of applications.

NEW JAWSAnother Austrian company, dsb Maschinenbau GmbH, has introduced a new mobile jaw unit, the Innocrush 40J, that features what the company says is an extremely compact design that offers a throughput of up to 330 tonnes/hour. It is best suited as a primary crusher producing a final product with a large grain size. The new unit is 11.6 m (38 ft) long, 2.6 m (8.5 ft) wide and weighs in at 39.8 tonnes. Power comes from a Cat C11 developing 287 kW (385 hp). It comes as standard with a hydraulically lowering main conveyor, side conveyor, hydraulically driven vibrofeeder with integrated primary screen, magnetic metal separator, dust suppression system and remote control.

Keestrack meanwhile has been busy reworking on upgrading its range of equipment, the fruits of which were unveiled at a recent dealer meeting held in Limburg in Austria. The result is three new impact crushers, the Destroyer 1011, 1113 and 1313,

with the latter featuring a new concept rotor and a swivelling oversize return conveyor that can double as a stockpiling conveyor. In addition, two new jaw units made their appearance, the sub-30 tonne Argo and the Apollo with a redesigned crusher and feeder for hard natural rock applications, as well as a new remote control concept that allows its jaw crushers to restart with a full crushing chamber.

In addition, Keestrack took the wraps of a new S175 scalper/screen with a screening area of 1.5 x 5 m (4.9 x16.4 ft). Both the new S175 and the company’s Novum unit are also available with an easily removable side conveyor.

The company also announced that in cooperation with Binder, the Austrian manufacturer of the Bivitec screen, a new track mobile screen called GIANT will be introduced using a Bivitec 1.9 x 6 m (6.2 x 19.7 ft) screening unit. In addition, Keestrack has also announced that working with BHS-Sonthofen, the two companies are to develop a tracked mobile VSI crusher that will integrate the technical expertise of both. ■

Kaeser’s largest Mobilair unit, the M500-2, uses a Caterpillar engine featuring its Clean

Emissions Module (CEM). The unit is pictured here at last year’s Bauma show.

A tlas Copco is using technology based on cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), diesel oxidation catalyst

(DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) for engines in the 130-560 kW range. Tier 4 Interim compressors for the US market were introduced in 2012, powered by John Deere or Caterpillar engines.

For Europe the company used Caterpillar engines with a Clean Emission Module (CEM) to achieve Stage IIIB standards in the 130-560 kW range. Models were introduced at the end of 2012. The CEM comprises DOC, DPF with CRS (Cat Regeneration System).

Atlas Copco said: “One of the reasons for a DPF solution was that diesel exhaust

fluid (DEF) wasn’t required for the Tier 4 Interim standard. When the Interim Tier 4/Stage 3B standard was introduced, DEF on construction and mining sites was rare, meaning there weren’t any established logistic channels so it would be an additional barrier for our customers to accept the new standard.”

“Our aim was that customers would not see any difference in the operation of interim Tier 4/Stage 3B compressors compared to Tier 3/Stage 3A. We integrated DPF management in our new Xc3003 controller to make it easy to operate.”

For smaller Tier IV Interim/Stage 3B compressors, the company is using John Deere, Caterpillar and Kubota engines in the USA and Deutz in Europe.

Kaeser was an early starter in the Stage IIIB shift, introducing its M250 and M350 compressors in 2010, powered by Mercedes-Benz Stage IIIB engines using SCR-Cat and AdBlue technology.

At Bauma last year it showed its largest ever Mobilair unit, the M500-2, a dry-running screw compressor with a 450 kW Caterpillar engine combined with Cat’s V Clean Emissions Module (CEM) that uses DOC and DPF with CRS. The company introduced two other IIIB units at Bauma, the M171 with a Deutz engine and the M115 with a Kubota unit. Both engines use DPF technology. Serial production of these models began in spring 2014.

Finally, the M114 will run with a Deutz

Hipower, Himoinsa’s US subsidiary, showed off a range of diesel, bi-fuel and natural gas powered gensets at ConExpo in March. Pictured is a 165 kVA natural gas unit using a PSI engine and equipped with a system to ‘scrub’ the gas before it enters the genset. Hipower can make natural gas sets up to 1 MW and also now has a 50 kW propane powered set.

stock and customer demand conditions will affect/dictate the introduction dates of new machines.” The company is about to introduce the 12/154, a Stage IV version of the current 12/150.

For Kaeser, the machines are “more economic and always meet the requirements

emissionsengine with DOC and the M130 also using Deutz and requiring DPF. “Thus”, says Kaeser, “we will be able to offer portable compressors with Stage IIIB engines from 85 kW to 450 kW, which corresponds to a free air delivery range from approximately 10 to 45 m³/min.

At Doosan Portable Power, meanwhile, its large compressors are using a mix of Cummins and Caterpillar engine solutions, all using EGR technology.

MEETING TIER 4 FINALSo what about meeting the more stringent requirements of Stage IV/Tier 4 Final engine emission regulations and when will these units compressors be available and in what models?

Atlas Copco will use technology that includes selective catalytic reduction (SCR) in addition to cooled EGR, DOC and DPF. The company is using Caterpillar and John Deere engines. The company says that for Europe, cooled EGR and SCR technology was chosen because “large compressors are mostly used in construction and geothermal drilling. This work is normally done in cities, so availability of DEF is less of a problem. At the same time, EGR + SCR installation is very flexible and compact, which is important as customers expect a small footprint and low noise level.”

Conexpo saw the launch of Atlas Copco’s first Tier 4 compressor, the XATS 1050, available with Caterpillar and John Deere engines.

Arriving in the second quarter of the year was be the Drillair XRVS 1350/XRYS 577, a Tier 4 Final/Stage IV unit for the US and European markets with a Caterpillar engine. Finally, in Europe in mid-2014 some 12 bar Stage IV units became available, with larger, high-pressure compressors coming in the second quarter of 2015.

Kaeser says that its choice of engine technology will be determined by what the engine manufacturers are offering; “From today’s point of view, it seems that most engine manufacturers will focus on solutions with a particlate filter, combined with an additional SCR-Cat.”

The company said that Spring 2014 saw four new Mobilair units offering free air deliveries from 10 to 17 m³/min, comprising the M114 (Deutz engine with DOC), M115 (Kubota engine with DPF), M130 (Deutz, DPF) and M171 (Deutz, DPF).

Doosan, meanwhile, says its choice of engine suppliers may result in slightly different solutions per size, although “all with common market acceptance.” Regarding the timing of new Stage IV/Tier 4 Final compressors, it says; “Introduction dates are fixed for the engine suppliers, however

New compressors from DoosanDoosan portable power has added two new Stage IIIB compliant portable air compressors, the 7/125-10/110 and 14/90, which replace he previous Stage IIIA 7/120, 9/110, 10,105 and 14/85 models. According to the company, their advanced engineering combined with cost-effective features provides optimised performance, serviceability, durability and convenience

The 7/125 offers a ‘Dual Mode’ feature as standard with a choice of two pressure and flow ratings on the same machine. A button allows the operator to switch between low pressure (6.9 bar/free air delivery 12 m3/min) and high pressure (10.3 bar/free air delivery 10.6 m3/min). This eliminates the need to choose between two models as in the past and offers greater operational flexibility from the same machine.

The 14/90, with its free air delivery of 8.3 m3/min at 13.8 bar, is available for higher pressure applications and can be supplied with a traditional dual pressure switch as an option.

The control panel on both new machines has been redesigned, with switches replaced by an eight button keypad that allows the user to start/stop, load, select HI or LO pressure modes and scroll through readouts on the new MdPort display. This is a new interactive digital display integrated in the tachometer that allows the operator to see selected engine and amend temperatures and pressures, as well as features such as percent fan speed and engine load. It has three display lines with up to 11 characters per line, providing the user with the code number and a brief description of an alert or fault. It also has a time-out feature to prolong battery life.

of the acoustic emission regulations. This is not only a benefit of modern engine technologies, but also owes to more sophisticated controllers such as our SIGMA Control mobil, and to additional engineering features like for example a particularly energy-efficient ventilation-system that helps to save around 6% of diesel.”

At Doosan Portable Power, a specific benefit of the new engines is speed control, which gives enhanced performance opportunities. The company points out also that the emission regulations have triggered the development of new compressors, with “new platforms that allow us to introduce

new designs and/or features, enhancing the customer experience.”

Atlas Copco has also seized opportunities offered by using the latest engines; “We decided to take the opportunity of going to Stage IV to integrate new features to improve versatility, efficiency and user friendliness.”

“The new XC2003/3003 controllers provide information on a large control display and have extended logging capabilities. The new controller, DrillAirXpert and extended pressure range will increase versatility, which can positively influence rental utilisation.”

For reliable operation of Stage IV units, says Atlas Copco, ultra-low sulphur diesel fuel (ULSD) and high quality lubricants and original filters are paramount. Service interventions are “limited: DPF service interval is about every 4,000 hours, whereas with a SCR solution, the DEF filter should be normally be replaced every 1,000 hours.”

Kaeser highlights that electronic engine controls have already meant that service jobs have become more ambitious; “so we strongly recommend leaving maintenance to well-trained experts. Here, the trend goes towards a service contract with the operator. The additional exhaust emission treatments with SCR-Cat [and DOC] are mostly

maintenance-free.”The German manufacturer said that

the particle filters in its Mobilair units are automatically self-regenerating during normal operation, and added; “The exhaust emission legislation obliges engine manufacturers to guarantee the exhaust emission values for engines below 130 kw up to 3,000 hours of operation, and above 130 kW even up to 4,500 hours of operation. Beyond this, engine manufacturers offer exchange programs for particle filter components.”

Doosan says that its Stage IIIB/Tier 4 Interim units introduced its customers to EGR technology and new systems like DOC and DPF where required; “Going for Stage IV/T4F the main change will be the introduction of AddBlue, as the use of Urea doping will become prevalent in Stage IV solutions.” ■

Miller adds diesel welder/generatorsMiller Electric Manufacturing has introduced three new diesel welder/generators in the shape of the Big Blue 400 Pro. 800 Duo Air Pack and 800 Duo Pro. “Miller has redesigned its diesel engine-driven welder/generators to maximize power output and fuel efficiency,” said Joe Gitter, industrial engine drive product manager for Miller Electric Mfg. Co. “The result is a full product lineup of exceptionally powerful and robust diesel engine-driven welder/generators.”

The new 400 provides 400 A of output at 100 percent duty cycle. The 12 kW peak auxiliary power or 10 kW continuous auxiliary generator power, available while welding, allows for additional plug-in inverters for more versatile use as a multioperator unit. The Big Blue 400 Pro can handle most jobs with ease, including gouging with up to 1/4-inch carbons.

The 800 units offer a 33% increase in rated power output that results in 27,000 watts of generator power and up to 800 A of weld power for a single operator or 400 A each for two weld operators. Additional inverters can be plugged into the machines to create a multioperator work platform, with operators able to weld and get three-phase power at the same time. The multiprocess machines provide improved weld control that increases arc quality and optimises welding output, resulting in better welds on th icker material.

The Miller Big Blue 800 Duo Pro diesel welder/generator offers 34% fuel savings compared to two single operator units

This is the Tier 4 Interim XAS 1800 compressor, with Cat engine. It is the company’s most popular unit for industrial rentals in the USA.

Atlas Copco Portable Energy introduced the new QAS 25 and QAS 50 generators earlier this year – its first Tier 4 Final compliant generators. The 60 Hz sets for heavy-duty applications are using Isuzu 4LE engines with a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC)-only configuration to achieve Tier 4 Final emission levels. The QAS 25 and QAS 50 models will replace the existing QAS 25 and QAS 45 units and Atlas Copco said that its entire range of portable generators will be Tier 4 Final-compliant by the end of this year. The two new models use the same engine, enclosure and controls, meaning that rental companies need to stock fewer spare parts, including air and oil filters.

SITE REPORTSITE REPORT

I n the early 1930s, the construction crews that built the Bay Bridge that linked San Francisco to Oakland probably did

not consider how difficult it would be to dismantle the historic crossing 77 years later. In fact, the joint venture company tasked with demolishing the bridge worked for almost a year engineering the demolition, determining how to dismantle the bridge piece by piece and taking into account a wide range of major environmental and safety issues.

The contract for the project was awarded in January 2013 to a joint venture of Silverado Contractors and California Engineering Contractors. The first nine months of the project were consumed with engineering and planning, including detailed drawings and animations of every step of the demolition. Crews started work at the bridge site in September 2013, shortly after the new Bay Bridge opened to traffic.

For the first six months, work centered on removing the bridge deck and preparing the structure for precisely engineered demolition so that when a piece is taken off the rest of the bridge stays intact. Support beams were added in strategic places to assure the bridge does not collapse upon itself.

LIFTING NEEDS San Francisco-based Sheedy Drayage has supplied four mobile cranes for the project that is scheduled to be totally completed by

July 2016. The cranes include two 200-ton Liebherr LTM 1160/2 all terrain cranes and two 90-ton Link-Belt HTC 8690 truck cranes.

“Generally, one crane is holding the steel piece that is being cut free, while a second is hoisting the man basket with men who are burning the pieces loose,” said Michael Battaini, co-president of Sheedy Drayage. “Each piece that comes down is in the exact predetermined sequence and it has been precisely engineered for weight, dimension, and centers of gravity. Our cranes lower the beams onto a waiting truck on the bridge adjacent to our cranes.”

Each pick has been examined on an individual basis with 3-D modeling used to analyse weights and centres of gravity. One connection member may need to be cut into 10 pieces to be manageable for the crane being used.

“The cranes are working from the deck of the bridge that is being dismantled,” said Battaini. “Looking at the pictures, it’s amazing. The bridge is broken in two now and the cranes are working their way backwards. The cranes sit right back on the edge of that gap and are cantilevered out. The last point of support is a few hundred yards back.”

The cranes are sitting on the lower deck of

the double deck bridge. From the lower deck to the top of the truss varies from 28.6 m (94 ft) up to 61 m (200 ft) above the lower deck that itself is 61 m above the water surface.

According to Rich Riggs, Silverado’s project manager, in a year or so, tower cranes will be installed to assist on the work needed to be done at higher elevations.

“The lifts are limited by the capacity of the cranes,” Riggs said. “Although there are structural members weighing over 45,455 kg (100,000 lb), we are limited by crane capacities and radii to varying degrees. An average range would be 6,820 kg (15,000 lb) to a maximum of 18,182 kg (40,000 lb).”

ENVIRONMENTAL CARE While every element of the project has been planned down to the nth degree, there are still a range of challenges to overcome at every turn. Environmental protection is a huge concern, as is the fact that the bridge multiple layers of lead paint.

What is the biggest challenge for crews working at the site? “Demolishing a bridge while not allowing anything to enter the water below, even so much as a spark from a torch,” said Rich. “Containment measures are hung below the deck that we are removing. We designed custom man baskets to get the torch cutters to the work and that also act as

localised containment measures.”Demolition work is inherently dangerous,

so the precautions being taken are a huge part of everyday work. Due to the old lead paint on the bridge, crews must wear protective clothing and respiratory protective devices.

Riggs said other safety concerns include fall protection, fire and overhead hazards.

There are also windows where work has to be halted to allow for environmental concerns such as not interrupting bird habitats and bird nesting. Additionally the bridge is located in an active fisheries area so there are restrictions related to work that can be done in the water. Rich said that the joint venture group has coordinated work with a variety of entities and government regulations.

“These groups include the US Fish and Wildlife Preserve, The Bay Conservation District, the Army Corps of Engineers, the US Coast Guard, NOAA and others,” he said. “There are approximately 20 agencies with jurisdictions and permits within the project limits.” ■

About the Bay BridgeThe Bay Bridge was built in 1936. The bridge consists of two equal sections: the older western section connects San Francisco to Yerba Buena Island and the Eastern Section connects the island to Oakland. Before it was closed and the new Bay Bridge opened in September 2013, the bridge carried close to 240,000 vehicles per day on its two decks.

When the demolition is complete, in three to five years, more than 52,617 tonnes of steel and 222,260 tonnes of concrete will have been removed.

During the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, a section of the eastern section’s upper deck collapsed on the lower deck and the bridge was closed until it could be repaired.

T erex Finlay has introduced a new heavy duty tracked screen with the launch of its 893 model that can process up

to 800 tonne per hour and be fed by either a mobile crusher or by an excavator. The company says that it is built for working in a range of applications, including quarrying, mining, construction and demolition applications.

Power comes from either a Tier 3/Stage IIIA Caterpillar C6.6 engine developing 151 kW (202 hp) or a Tier 4 Interim/Stage 3B Caterpillar C4.4 developing 129 kW (173 hp) and it is fitted with three hydraulically folding discharge conveyors to provide maximum stockpiling capacity and rapid set up/tear down times (30 minutes or less).

The forward facing screenbox has a 6.1 x 1.8 m (20 x 6 ft) top deck and a 5.5 x 1.8 m (18 x 6 ft) bottom deck. Hydraulic adjustment is available to vary the working range angle

Powerscreen used the recent Hillhead trade show to introduce its latest heavy duty scalping screen in the shape of the Powertrak 750. According to the company, the new machine is a multi-purpose scalping unit that has been robustly constructed and aimed towards heavy duty scalping in applications such as blasted rock, overburden, and processing construction and demolition waste. Powerscreen says that the machine’s lively screening action allows the 750 scalper to be equally effective for fine screening applications such as crusher runs

The Powerscreen Powertrak 750 scalper has been designed for heavy duty applications

According to Finlay, a key element of the design is the ability to hydraulically raise the screenbox 0.6 (2 ft) at the discharge end to provide additional clearance for ease of media change as well as routine maintenance of the screenbox and fines transfer. ■

The Murphy’s Wharf recycling depot in Charlton run by Day Group is one of the UK’s largest recycling depots. Finlay Group recently delivered a Trackstack VL1000 13.5 m (44.3 ft) fast volume loader/unloader, the first to be operational in the UK, to the facility where it is now being used to transfer recycled glass from hopper trucks directly onto barges on the river Thames. The Trackstack VL1000 is a low-level receiving hopper featuring a radial boom conveyor fitted onto a single track mounted chassis for ease of movement and rapid set-up time. It can also be used to transfer recycled aggregate.

Terex Finlay’s new tracked 893 screen is built for heavy duty applications and can process up to 800 tonnes/hour

IRock launches new jaw crusherCustomer demand has led IRock to add a new tracked jaw crusher, the 50 tonne TJ-3046, to its product line-up. According to the company, the TJ-3046 is a high performance primary jaw plant that is designed for medium-scale operators in the quarrying, demolition, recycling and mining applications.

The new unit features a 9.9 m3 (351 ft3) feeder and includes a grizzly pre-screening grid, with the feeder drive featuring a load control system to ensure continuous, uninterrupted crushing. Power comes from a Cat C-9 ACERT Tier 3/Stage IIIA diesel developing 261 kW (350 hp) and the machine has a production throughput of up to 400 tonnes per hour.

The TJ-3046’s high swing jaw generates an aggressive crushing action and accelerates movement of material into the crushing chamber. The 1.2 m (3.9 ft) discharge conveyor can stockpile up to 3.5 m (11.6 ft), with a dirt conveyor a standard feature.

NLB Corporation

Komatsu has launched the WA270-7 wheeled loader that weighs in at 13.5 tonnes, with power coming from a Komatsu SAA6D107E-2 delivering 112 kW (149 hp). According to the company, the new loader features greater engine power, reduced fuel consumption of up to 10%, improved operator comfort and optimised serviceability over the WA250PZ-6 that it replaces. The machine’s versatile PZ-linkage combines the advantages of the approved Z-bar linkage with the features of parallel lift kinematics. With this design, tilting forces reach an optimal level and parallel movement during fork application is guaranteed.

The new cab provides a more comfortable and quieter work environment. For improvedvisibility, the front glass has been lowered and the dashboard has been redesigned. A newredesigned console has a multi-function mono-lever with proportional control for the integrated 3rd spool, allowing complete attachment control.

Dust Control Technology has introduced a family of adjustable mounting brackets for the DustBoss DB-R dust suppressors that are available to suit all DB-R ring sizes from 7 to 40 cm (17-100 inches), with installation only taking an hour. Originally developed for a coal application, the DB-R fully encircles the discharging material to apply suppression directly to the flow exiting the conveyor. The units are suited to conveyor discharge of sand, aggregates, biomass and other traditionally dusty materials.

NLB Corporation has introduced the Automated Remote Manipulator (ARM) semi-automated water jet system that is designed to improved operator protection and at the same time reduce downtime. The new design sees an operator manipulate

C DE has expanded its product range with the addition of the R2500 static dry primary screening unit that is

electrically powered and has a production throughput of over 500 tonnes/hour. Its use can result in substantial savings in fuel consumption as well as provide quieter and more environmentally-friendly operation, says CDE. It can be integrated into existing or new CDE wash plants and has been designed for use in quarrying, recycling and mining where a range of difficult materials are processed

The new R2500 primary dry screen from CDE Global is electrically powered and has a throughput of up to 500 tonnes/hour

a range of accessories from the safety and comfort from the climate controlled cab

of a compact excavator, using joystick control to position the tools and control the flow of high pressure water (up to 40,000 psi or 2,760 Bar at 600 hp).

The new machine can be used for a wide range of applications,

such as tube bundle cleaning and hydrodemolition. A

unique quick coupling system allows the operator to easily make accessory changes. It has a vertical reach of 3.7 m (12 ft) and a horizontal reach of 5.2

m (17 ft), with a wide water jet pattern to maximise

coverage. This allows the operator to work well away from

the nozzle to not only reduce risk but eliminate the fatigue of manual water jetting and inconsistent results from operators with different skill levels. ■

CDE adds dry screener to range

including crushed rock, topsoil, scalpings, iron ore and construction and demolition waste.

The R2500 features a patent-pending laminate side wall design on the ProGrade P2-7/R screen that has no welds, resulting in a stronger and lighter screen that requires less power, galvanised as standard. The screen’s lattice design has a reduced mass and ensures more energy is transferred to the material, which according to the company guarantees superior screening performance. This screen is an integral part of the CDE range. ■

Ton up at SellafieldS ellafield Ltd recently celebrated a

milestone in the decommissioning and cleanup of the UK’s historic nuclear

facility with the demolition of the 100th structure on the site since 2007, with the most recent being a store. The structures removed include a diverse range of facilities, from legacy chemical plants, R&D facilities, waste stores, reactor cooling towers, right through to portacabins and the original site fire station.

Steve Slater, Head of Decommissioning said: “There is over 1,300 facilities at Sellafield to be decommissioned and reaching our first century is a significant achievement. Demolition of the 100 buildings has released over 35,000 m2 (377,000 ft2) of real estate, which is equivalent in size to five soccer fields. This valuable space at Sellafield is necessary to fuel our continued decommissioning programme. We’re using the extra room to help retrieve, process and re-package historic nuclear waste to make it safe for long term storage and disposal.”

Decommissioning work at Sellafield will take more than 100 years, with the programme stretching out to 2120. Work is currently concentrating on high priority projects where the historic buildings are deteriorating and the nuclear waste is no longer stored to modern standards.

One of the most dramatic demolition projects so far has been the explosive

demolition of the 88 m (289 ft) high concrete cooling towers associated with the world’s first commercial nuclear power station, Calder Hall, which ceased generating electricity in 2003. The four cooling towers were safely demolished in September 2007.

Demolition delivery manager Geoff Carver said: “We’re totally committed to cleaning up

the Sellafield site and one of our problems is often the lack of space available to build new, modern waste processing and storage facilities for the historic radioactive waste. The demolition of redundant buildings is both cost effective as it saves on maintenance and asset care costs and provides valuable space on the congested Sellafield site." ■

The cooling towers at Calder Hall power station fall in 2007, just one of 100 structures demolished at the UK’s Sellafield nuclear site

Making light work of wasteGerman waste recycling specialist Zimmermann Recycling & Transport, based in Lahnstein near Koblenz, is one of Germany’s leading waste handling operations. The company sorts and moves more than 200,000 tonnes of waste annually on its 70,000 m2 (750,000

ft2) site using an exclusively Volvo fleet of machines. Some 60 personnel work on the site, processing the waste that is collected by the company’s own container service operating 20 vehicles and 11,000 waste containers of varying sizes.

Currently Zimmermann is operating 12

Volvo machines including several wheeled loaders from an L30 to L110G, as well as a EW160B and a new EW210D wheeled excavators, both featuring hydraulically elevating cabs.

The machines work three shifts per day and run for 2,000 hours per year, with Zimmermann replacing its machines after 8,000 hours to ensure maximum productivity. According to Ralf Zimmermann, co-owner with brother Frank; “Qualified personnel, logistics and the latest machine and plant technology are key factors in recycling. We mostly rely on industrial waste coming in from the demolition and wood industries but we also recycle green waste, plastics, scrap metal, waste paper and glass.”

The EW210D cabin can reach a height of 5.6 m (18.4 ft), assisting the operator when sorting piled high waste and when feeding the shredders and crushers. The high cab also allows a clear view when loading into high-sided truck bodies. Use of an S6 quick coupler on both machines allows the sorting grab and bucket to be easily changed over on both to suit different tasks.

MGL Demolition, part of the MGL Group, is now using a Sandvik QJ341 to crush -75 mm (-3 inch) demolition material on a variety of projects, as required. The flexibility and productivity of the machine is ensured due to its a 1.2 x 0.75 m (4 x 2.5 ft) feed opening, hydraulically adjustable CSS, high reduction ratios, crushing speed and efficiency. Additionally the crusher possesses a reverse crushing action to relieve blockages, plus an automatic central lubrication system. The QJ341 comes with new features that ensure continuous, uninterrupted crushing and greater operator safety, including a load control system for the feeder drive, level sensor fitted to the jaw and speed wheel fitted to the main conveyor. One of the key design changes now sees the main conveyor being fitted with a raise and lower facility for increased magnet clearance together with ease of transportation.

Robots to the rescueNetherlands contractor De Jong Betonboringen was brought in to help with a major upgrade of the staff and personnel quarters located in the basement of a 468 room, five star hotel built in 1880, located in the centre of Amsterdam,.

The work brought a number of major challenges that resulted in De Jong deploying two Brokk demolition robots, a 160 and a 100, along with a 3 tonne electrically powered excavator and a small track dumper. Access to the work area in the basement was via an opening that was only 0.8 wide x 1.5 m high (2.6 x 5 ft) via a 45° ramp. In addition, the basement contained electrical cables, and central heating water and sewer pipework that had to remain live as the hotel above was still fully functioning for guests. Finally, working hours were limited because the work was being carried out during the height of the tourist season and the hotel was almost fully booked – despite this, the contractor had only a maximum of six weeks to remove 430 m2 (4,629 ft2) of 0.25 m (0.8 ft) thick concrete flooring. De Jong successfully completed the work in the specified timeframe and to budget.

DDS completes Maidstone car park demolitionWorking to a tight deadline, DDS

Demolition has completed the demolition of a multi-storey car

park in Maidstone in Kent, UK, on behalf of Maidstone Borough Council after 18 months of work and achieved a recycling rate of 98%. The car park in King Street had been built in the 1970s using the ‘lift-slab’ technique that later proved to be prone to failure. Despite efforts to reinforce the structure, it was finally declared unsafe and as a result scheduled for demolition. Following a competitive tendering process, DDS was appointed as main contractor for the job, which included the construction of a street level car park following the demolition.

The urban nature of the site imposed a number of constraints on DDS to successfully carry out the project. The structure was in the heart of Maidstone town centre, with surrounding paths, roads and adjacent shops that had to remain unaffected by the demolition work. This meant that very rigorous dust and vibration suppression was essential. In addition, there was insufficient room for large excavators to be deployed in the initial phase of work, meaning that

careful top-down demolition was required until sufficient space had been cleared in the structure’s footprint for their deployment. And if that was not enough, the car park shared a wall with a bowling centre next door that remained open during the duration, meaning that this elevation had to be demolished very carefully by hand.

The structural weakness of the building also had an impact on the demolition methodology. The car park had to be temporarily reinforced during the top down work to ensure that the floors could carry the weight of the equipment required. Each floor was pierced in the same position by a well hole that allowed debris to be cleared from the working level to the ground floor, with regular clearance preventing any possible overloading of the floor being worked on.

A very large volume of the 98% of demolition arisings that were recycled were used on site to form the sub-base of the new car park that was completed at street level. ■

ASSOCIATIONS

Madrid highlife for EDA Decontamination Forum

M ore than 200 individuals were in attendance at the EDA’s first

Deconstruction Forum held in the Intercontinental Hotel in Madrid. The main event was the one-day conference that was held on June 13. It was intended to be a place to “generate ideas” and “engage debate” in the words of EDA president Pilar de la Cruz. Pilar officially opened the conference and was then followed by the NDA executive director Mike Taylor who covered the topic “the new asbestos”, discussing among other thing the potential health effects for overexposure to this material.

Walter Werner followed with a presentation on the successful blasting of a 770 m 2,526 ft) viaduct in Germany. Lindsay Pepperre, from ERM (UK) then covered several case studies on the daily findings on decontamination of hazardous waste.

The second conference session was moderated by IDE president Steve Jack and included a presentation on the development of C&DW recycling in Europe by Geert Cuperus from FIR.

Then followed two demolition case studies. Firstly, Detecsa’s Francisco Cobo covered interior demolition of a building complex in Madrid. Rainer Melzer then explained the process involved in the explosive demolition of the AfE Tower in Frankfurt, believed to be the largest structure brought down in this way in Europe to date.

The first afternoon session, moderated by FIR delegate Giorgio Bressi (Italy), started with a presentation from Christophe Sykes, from Construction Products Europe, on sustainability and end-of-life of construction products.

The second speaker was Gunther Wolff

from the European Commission, with a presentation entitled “Construction and demolition waste management in the EU: the way forward”, explaining the importance and benefits of more and better recycling.

Stine Egsgaard, from J-Jensen then presented on the winning entry for the 2014 Environmental

& Recycling Award – a system for safely removing PCB contamination prior to demolition

The session ended with a case study on the process from construction to recycling through demolition made by John Rimmer from Cantillon (UK) who explained that his company “makes sure no material is sent to landfill”.

The final session, moderated by IACDS president Lars Sandsstrom, was opened by Miguel Ángel Prieto, from DYR/Detecsa. His topic was the dismantling and demolition of the Sant Adriá de Besós and Badalona power stations in Barcelona He was followed by Tamer Öztoygar, president of the national association from Turkey, IMDER, who outlined the Turkish construction equipment

Mike Taylor to retireThe National Demolition Association’s executive director Mike Taylor has announced his intention to retire with effect from July 2015, with his final task for the Association being the organisation of its Annual Convention, which is to be held in the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee, on March 21-24, 2015.

According to the NDA in a news release, the Search Committee of the Board of Directors has been working to evaluate a range of options for the management of the organisation after Mike’s retirement. The committee, chaired by current NDA Vice President Peter Banks of CEI Boston in Norfolk, MA, has met with a number of Association Management Companies (AMC) and executive recruiting firms over the last several months to determine which management option would best serve the needs of the Association in the future.

The Search Committee informed the Board of Directors at their meeting in Vancouver that they recommend moving the organisation to an AMC and intends to review RFP responses from several AMCs and give their recommendation on which to contract with at the fall board meeting in Gettysburg.

NDA executive director Mike Taylor makes his final appearance at the EDA Annual Convention, held this year in Madrid

market. Last, but not least, Jaime Peribañez from PERFOX closed the professional programme with a case study on the application of special concrete sawing and drilling techniques on an old viaduct over live railway lines. ■

Thomas Buyse, machine operator and co-owner of Screen-Renting BVBA

Screen-Renting BVBA in Gent, Belgium, is specialized in demolition and recycling. Their modern 20 t mobile excavator is an essential part of their working process. However, massive dust emer-gence in their sorting hall tends to choke its fi lter. This lead to numerous forced breaks per day, as the hydraulic oil overheated. Changing to a hydraulic fl uid formulated with the DYNAVIS® technology solved the problem – and lead to fuel savings of 11 % and more.

“Formerly we had cool down breaks several times a day although we cleaned the fi lters frequently. Now we work the whole day through – and save lots of fuel at the same time. A superb hydraulic oil!“

Cool oil – and hot savings!

Multiply your effi ciency

Yes, I did it!

DYNAVIS® is a brand of Evonik.
