Ephesians 6:1-4 – the fourth commandment of the Old Law is brought
intact into Christ’s Law.
“HONOR” – to fix a value on something, to consider it a prized possession.
The Hebrew word in Exodus 20:12 literally means “to be heavy” and was used to describe someone heavy with wealth.
Honor Your Parents
What does it mean? Obey Them
• Eph. 6:1 – “for this is right”
• Col. 3:20– “this is well-pleasing to the Lord”
• Proverbs 1:8-9 – it means listening to their teachings and applying them to your life.
• Proverbs 15:5 – especially when being disciplined, children are to give attention.
Honor Your Parents
What does it mean?
Bless Them• Proverbs 30:11-13 – a child is to be
grateful for what his parents have done for him.
• Proverbs 30:17 – the opposite of honoring your parents is to mock them or treat them scornfully, even with a look.
• Proverbs 20:20 – A child must not curse his parents. (Not referring merely to profanity, but also treating them with contempt.)
Honor Your Parents
What does it mean?
Bless Them• Exodus 21:15 – A direct application
of this law is that a child must not strike his parents.
• Leviticus 19:32 – honor is shown in body language as well as speech.
Honor Your Parents
What does it mean?
Be Truthful and Honest With Them
• Proverbs 28:24 – they are not people to overrun and think nothing of it.
Honor Your Parents
What does it mean?
Meet Their Needs• 1 Timothy 5:3-4,8 – they sacrificed
their lives (though imperfectly) for you; they blessed you with their possessions, their time, and their tears. You owe them your life.
Honor Your Parents
But what if they aren’t fair?
No excuses. The commandment is not qualified. It does not
mean:• Honor only if your parent is
deserving.• Honor only if the parent gives
you praise and honor back.• Consider 1 Peter 2:18; 3:1
Honor Your Parents
But what if they want me to
do something wrong? • Respect for a parent does not mean
following them into sin. A parent’s authority is granted by God. A child is to obey God’s higher authority. Acts 5:29
• Matthew 10:37 – respect for a parent must not exceed our respect for God.
Honor Your Parents
Implied in this command are obligations on each
parent’s part. • A child does not automatically have
respect. A habit of respect must be instilled in him.
• Prov. 22:15 – foolishness is in a child’s heart.
• Prov. 13:24 – if you truly love your child, you will discipline him.
• Prov. 23:13-14 – beating him with a rod will deliver his soul from hell.
Train Up A Child
Implied in this command are obligations on each
parent’s part. • Parents must instruct, manage and
discipline in accordance with God’s will.
• Ephesians 6:4 – “discipline and instruction OF THE LORD”
• Deuteronomy 11:18-21 - a constant reminder of what is right.
Train Up A Child
Are parents sacrificing their children to demons?
Psalm 106:35-41
On The Altar of Pleasure“Some parents are so concerned about their children having ‘a good time’ that they will sacrifice the soul of their own
child on the altar of pleasure.”David Padfield, www.padfield.com
Train Up A Child
Are parents sacrificing their children to demons?
Psalm 106:35-41
On The Altar of Popularity“Since the moral code revealed in the New Testament is not in harmony with
the ‘standards’ of the world, many parents will yield to pressure and allow
their children to engage in activities they would rather you not know about.”
Train Up A Child
Are parents sacrificing their children to demons?
Psalm 106:35-41
On The Altar of Education“My heart breaks every time I hear some
parent tell me their child could not make it to Wednesday evening Bible class because
‘they had homework.’
Train Up A Child
Are parents sacrificing their children to demons?
Psalm 106:35-41
On The Altar of Education“What excuse can a parent possibly have for
their children not having their Bible class lessons
prepared? Out of 168 hours in a week they couldn't find
one hour to study their Bible? ...I don't blame the
children near as much as I do the parents!”
Train Up A Child
“that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the
earth”
Proverbs 4:1-13; 20-27
