About three years ago, two foolish con-men hadan idea: to help pull together the Texas Steampunks withan event that was for the community and organized by thecommunity with their best interests in mind. So, they pulled together what little funds they had, bargained withOutlaws, traded with disreputable types and stole (and ran)from pirates until they had enough backing and support topull this wonderful idea off. We welcome you, all of you,to therFest, an unconventional Steampunk convention!

Where mad scientists show off their wares that whiz & whooz and adventurers brag about their travels over drinks(or brag about bragging about their travels over drinks).

We, Con-Chairmen of the San Antonio Neo Victorian Association, put this all together for you with a passion only matched by the furnaces of an airshiparmada. The only reward we want is for all of your support towards therFest and to get this going again next year. This is a convention, a festival for you, where we revel inthe beauty of Steampunk and our wonderful Texascommunity. Yes, we'll take this opportunity to yell"FIRST!" for being the first Steampunk convention inTexas, but we hope we're not the only ones. WithClockwork Con in Austin and the Difference Engine in

Dallas kicking up, this will be an exciting decade forSteampunk and we hope you'll join us for however long our crazy celebration lasts.

therFest is here because of you and we couldn't have done it without you. Thanks for everything and if yousee us walking around, say hello (and buy us a drink)!

A MANIFESTO OF THE STEAMPUNK ETHOS By Pablo Mr. Saturday Vazquez III

Take a look around you. Despite our societys leaps in technological development and civilized advancement, we lack an essential spirit. We cant exactly pinpoint it, but we know its missing. Its the same feeling an artist gets when he looks at an empty canvas and just doesnt know what to paint, but he knows hed like to at least paint something. I can tell you what

were missing: A tru e renaissance. Our creative spirits are starved, no longer tied to the innate truths of being human, of truly living, and whenever we look at our world, we only feel as if our canvas has been damaged by some unseen force that wehave quietly supported this whole time. If the future looks cold and endangered, what must we do if not look back? Theimages of the future-past we see in the works of H.G Wells & Jules Verne, the wild ideas of old wizards like Nikola Tesla and Charles Babbage, and many more are those of technological optimism, social advancement, communal harmony, individualistic development, and boundless creativity, virtues and dreams which the Steampunk community fully embracesand even evangelizes. We are not just some community hiding in the shadows, living high off its own elitism, prancing around in anachronistic fashions with no true purpose or standing. In reality, Steampunk becomes the rallying call of thesleeping adventurers, the once and future poets singing a eulogy to our dead society and, like a phoenix, awaiting themoment from which our wildest dreams can emerge from the decaying corpse of the modern order.

We take our cues from science fiction, a world that never was that should have been, a reality in which our minds andour hearts roam the skies in search of the new, the true, the exciting. We want our present and our future to be one, full of endless wonderment and adventure, our weapons against the dullness of our mass fabricated world. We do not advocatesome sort of primitive nightmare, but rather, we ask our friends to approach the pool of reflection and see that instead of themajestic individual that they should be, they see instead a chained clone, covered in the trite vestments of the modernreligion of branding and greed. With our souls in the past, hearts in the present and minds in the future, we are retro-futurist time travelers on a mission and we will not fail. The closest thing we could be labeled is a social art movement, in which

we seek to transform society not just through our actions and attitudes, but also through our art. It is not the kind that hangsin galleries and museums, though one might find us instead wearing our creations in such esteemed locations. We are

walking masterpieces, armored Grecian statues parading our craftsmanship for all to admire, learn from and even criticize. We do not close our minds to the possibilities of human imagination and reason, but rather attempt to encourage each otherand others to let their dreams run wild and see where it takes them. Our community is united by purpose and aesthetics, inseparable as though we had all been siblings, born of the same beautiful vision which we all live and seek propagate. Weare equals and those who have pushed towards the horizon and have achieved great things are nothing more than thehonored heroes, the first amongst equals that do not tower above the rest of us, but rather want us to reach for the skies asthey did and collect the stars.

We are eccentrics, dandies, fops, pirates, fringe academics, mad tinkerers, outcast reactionaries and revolutionaries, bohemians, rakes, visionary authors, and other such desirable undesirables. No matter what you may choose to call yourself,

we embrace you as family and we know that you will do great things. Steampunk wants you to reflect on who you are inside

and then dress accordingly and, most importantly, act accordingly, as your aesthetics and actions are the only true reflectionany of us can have of who you really are. We are wildly anachronistic with modern twists, a fine absinthe before heading off to the IMAX in our full finery. This is not to mean that we've become caricatures of those silly stuffy Victorians, but rather,Steampunk was best described by the ever-wonderful Nath an Fillion as embracing the simplicity and romance of the past coupled with the hope, promise and sheer super coolness of futuristic design. Dreamers of the modern world, we ask younot to stop dreaming, but open your eyes and make those dreams a reality with us. Together, we will sail the skies and aimour cannons at the assembly line mentalities which lead us to dull societies and decaying cultures. Together, as a phoenix, we

    will rise.

The Saint Anthony Hotel Staring at a plot of land with nothing but a background of cattle, two successful cattlemen desired to create one of

the greatest hotels in San Antonio history. Unbeknownst to them, their financial partner and expert guide, F.M Swearingen, would not only accomplish this, but he would create the foundation for one of the most legendary accommodations in theNation's history.

Only a few days into the christening of 1909, The St. Anthony Hotel opened its doors to droves of anticipativepatrons. Positioned as one of the most modern hotels ever created, visitors marveled at illuminated closets, bedroom lightsthat turned off when the door was locked from the outside, and the use of their very own private bath and toilet. Theseamenities, although small by today's standards, set the stage for a series of hotel innovations that made The St. Anthony a leader on the technology curve.

Following their grand opening, the hotel recorded a blistering year in revenue, allowing the financial backbone tocreate another tower before the year was through. Doubling capacity to a monstrous 430 beautifully furnished rooms, TheSt. Anthony was now being mentioned by the elite classes in the same breath as the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York. By 1915, rates began at $1.50 and the history of the St. Anthony had only begun.

Since first opening its doors, the historic St. Anthony has played host to royalty and presidents and to celebritiesfrom the worlds of music, theater and film. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt visited Peacock Alley, as did President Eisenhower, and General Douglas McArthur. Prince Ranier and Princess Grace of Monaco were honored with a receptionin their honor in Peacock Alley during their visit to San Antonio in 1968. In 1999, their son, Prince Albert of Monaco, graced the Anacacho Ballroom by hosting a private reception for the World Pentathlon Organization.

Many guests from Hollywood's "Golden Era" enjoyed the style and luxury offered at The St. Anthony: Judy Garland,Mickey Rooney, Lucille Ball, Fred Astaire, Betty Hutton, and Greer Garson. Lyndon Johnson, John Wayne, Gregory Peck, and Rock Hudson dined many an evening in the prestigious St. Anthony Club, which today host weddings for San Antoniobrides as does the Georgian Room.
