Partnering with local community groups for programs, outreach and the benefit of others is one of our priorities. Did you know that the library hosts monthly donations to benefit charities locally and throughout the county? December is Hats, Gloves and Mittens month to benefit residents of St. Joseph’s Center. We have also been able to donate to other worthy causes like the North Pocono Food Pantry and Friends of the Poor. The Library’s Garden Group donated over 1000 pounds of fresh produce to the North Pocono Food Pantry this year. The Library recently partnered with the Minisink Lions Club relief efforts for Hurricane Harvey victims. In an effort to combat prescription drug abuse, the Library sponsored a drug take back day in conjunction with the Lackawanna/Susquehanna Office of Drug & Alcohol Programs, the Voluntary Action Center and the Moscow Police to safely dispose of prescription medications. YES! I’D LIKE TO SUPPORT NORTH POCONO PUBLIC LIBRARY’S ANNUAL FUND!

2017 Annual Fund Drive

As fall fades into winter and we think about family, friends,

and giving, we hope that you will support your North

Pocono Public Library with an end of year gift to the

library’s Annual Fund! The library offers collections,

program, and services for people of all ages!

Your generous contribution to the NPPL Annual Fund will

benefit thousands of local residents who rely on the North

Pocono Public Library. These are a few of the ways that

the library supports our community:

Story hour programs that provide early literacy

skills and social development for children from

birth to preschool.

Summer Quest – a summer reading and learning

enrichment program that provides encouragement

for children and teens to read throughout the

summer and to learn about gardening, science,

music, and much more!

Services for College Students – the library provides

a quiet study space and e-resources for students.

We also provide test proctoring for students

studying online.

Support for Seniors – the library offers assistance

with technology, tax services, social programs and

outreach to the Covington Senior Center and St.

Mary’s Villa.

Resources and programs for all including

books, e-books, audio books, computer, fax,

and printing services.

Community space for local organizations such

as the NP Boosters, the Dandy Lion Little

League, the Moscow Fire Department, speech

therapists through the local Intermediate Unit,

the Red Cross.

We continue to strive to:

Engage teens and young adults to provide

them with knowledge and resources to better

prepare them for the future.

Promote the PA Forward five literacies – early

literacy, financial literacy, health literacy,

information literacy, and civic and social

literacy.

Provide the most excellent service and

resources to assure that the library is meeting

the needs of the community and is sustainable

and essential!

Please join us in being a library sustainer. Your

support will go directly to programs that directly

benefit YOUR community! We thank you for your

generosity!

The North Pocono Public Library has an amazing group of people who are interested in promoting the library and fundraising to support the important programs and services that help the library thrive! This group is the Friends of the Library! As the Library Director, I am taking

time to reflect upon the many

wonderful efforts made by these

dedicated volunteers. They organize

and run the Spring and Fall Book Sales

which continue to be more and more

successful each time. They assist at

community events such as the

National Library Week Celebrations,

the Fall Festival, and the Moscow

Street Fair by making hot dogs,

organizing basket raffles and

promoting the library in various ways.

It was another successful and productive season for the North Pocono Public Library Garden Project. We accomplished our mission of being a Giving Garden by providing the North Pocono Food Pantry with 1000 lbs. of fresh, organically grown vegetables. Our mission of being a Learning Garden included offering a children’s program, “How Does Your Garden Grow?” For 8 weeks, children met in our garden to learn about gardening and about vegetables. Topics such as starting seeds, vegetables that grow underground, and jobs in the garden were among the most popular with the children. Adult classes included “Dig in – a Guide to Successful Vegetable Gardening”, “Compost Happens”, and “Putting Your Garden to Bed.” These classes are open to

all adults. Suggestions for new topics are always welcome. The Garden Project expanded its learning mission this year through a grant from the Moses Taylor Foundation. In 2017 we piloted our first apprentice gardening program. The Biesecker family and the Mattern family were provided with all the necessary information, supplies and training to grow a successful vegetable garden and that they did! They are now ready to transfer their knowledge and experience to their own home gardens! If you are interested in being considered as an apprentice family/individual for the 2018 growing season, contact the library for an application. The third mission of the Garden

Project was to plant and maintain a

Pollinator Garden. In 2017 our

Pollinator Garden was recognized as a Monarch Waystation as well as being certified as a Penn State Master Gardener Pollinator Garden. We had many beautiful flying visitors to the garden including bees, butterflies, and moths that helped to pollinate our flowers and vegetables. The garden is open for the public to enjoy throughout the spring, summer and fall. We are always in need of volunteers! If you are interested in learning about our garden or volunteering please contact the library.

They offer painting classes throughout the year that provide entertainment as well as support the community. They also engage the community by working with various generous restaurants in the area to offer fundraising events. Places like Kay’s Italian Restaurant, the Olde Brook Inn, Brick’s Tavern and Van Brunt Grill have partnered with the Friends to help library. The funds that have been raised provide needed items that aren’t in the budget. Things like a tent that the library can use for outreach events, a digital piano that we plan to use for music events and for patrons to use to digitally compose music, Legos for our Children’s programs and other items that support the mission of the library. I encourage you to consider joining

the Friends of the Library as either a financial supporter or as an active volunteer! We can always use more Friends and we truly value and appreciate the ones that we have. Thank you so much to the Friends of the North Pocono Public Library for all that you do!
