    intensi#e training progra"s we were put through for the Ol!"piads ha#e gi#en "e a lot of

confidence in dealing with abstract "athe"atical proble"s.

    +! eposure to >o"puter Science began after 3 entered the 3ndian 3nstitute of4echnolog! (334), Bo"ba!. 4he ecellent facilities, courses and facult! ha#e gi#en "e a

fir" background of the funda"entals in >o"puter Science. Ha#ing been eposed to the

ha#e a concrete basis, originating fro" practical proble"s in >o"puter Science. 4his adds

    to their appeal.

:ecentl!, a lot of eciting de#elop"ents ha#e taken place in the field of

recentl!, se"i9definite progra""ing has been used to obtain approi"ation algorith"s for

Opti"iDation proble"s. An interesting connection with results in 3nteracti#e Proof

    S!ste"s has !ielded lower bounds on the approi"abilit! of #arious proble"s. 3 belie#e

that these "ethods ha#e a lot of potential. A lot of the pioneering work in these areas

has been done b! "e"bers of the facult! at Stanford. Prof. :a?ee# +otwani has been
