In seven educationally backward StatesBihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Orissa, Uttrakhand, covering 4000* Panchayats in 100 Blocks, in 20 Districts.

** The project was based on the estimation of 4,000 Panchayats in 100 blocks. The actual number of Panchayats finally turned out to 3,883.

Kala Jatha Pre Jatha Activities

Artists for 20 Kala Jathas were identified Jatha route of all the districts were finalised Kalajatha reception committees were formed at Jatha

points Prepared campaign materials like Pamphlets, posters,

book on scripts, audio CD of songs etc. Conducted meetings with different groups at local level Arrangements were made by the Reception

committees at each point to receive the kalajatha team

Mobilised the community including panchayat members, teachers, students, parents to see the performance

Jatha Movement After about one month’s ground work, the Kala Jatha programme was launched in

December, 2010 Kala Jatha moved for 15-20 days in each district Performed on an average of three at Cluster

locations every day 20 kalajatha teams performed at 995 points in

100 blocks An estimated 5 Lakh people witnessed the

Jatha performances with an average viewership 350 – 500 per location where women viewers outnumbered men.

Response More than 10,000 people have given their names

and contact details. There were community contributions in terms of

food, stay arrangements for the Kala Jatha etc. People appreciated the programme and were

happy with the information given about RTE People complained of the low standard of

education in schools, rampant child labour, corporal punishment, poor learning environment etc in many places during post Kala Jatha discussions.

People demanded the need for continuous awareness programmes and discussions regarding RTE

Sustaining an environment for effective implementation of RTE

Transforming a school in a block as a model RTE School in quality aspects and democratic functioning including SMC, which can be used as the resource centre for other schools in that block.
