PROGRAM AT-A-GLANCEKEYNOTE SPEAKERS
PLENARY & CLOSING SESSIONS The Innovation Takes Root plenary spans speakers which include global Brands, thought leaders, leading academics, and non-governmental organizations.
Confirmed plenary speakers include Ikea, describing their vision for sustainable materials innovation – “Circular Ikea.” They are joined by the Green Sports Alliance who explain how their more than 300 member sports leagues, teams and arenas are partnering with industry to drive societal change. Hear a broader context on bioplastics place in the USA’s $369 billion bioeconomy from the Director of Duke University’s Center for Sustainability & Commerce. And, understand an NGO perspective from the World Wildlife Fund’s Bioplastics Feedstock Alliance on their partnership with Brands to more responsible bioplastics.
The closing speaker will be NatureWorks President and CEO Marc Verbruggen, giving a perspective on the industry and his company’s place in it. In what has been a well-attended session in prior conferences, Verbruggen gives a commentary that past attendees have described as sometimes blunt, often frank, but always thought provoking.
CRACKING THE CODE ON SINGLE SERVE BEVERAGE DELIVERYThe increase in popularity of single serve beverage systems for coffee, tea, and now soft drinks raises the question of how best to avoid spent capsules ending up in landfill. The conventional plastics in use in the majority of today’s capsules make it impractical to compost the organic material in each spent cup. Similarly, the damp organics, small size and multicomponent structure of the typical capsule means that recycling is not straightforward.
Supply chains which span from nonwovens, to flexible films, to sheet extrusion all converge to produce a performance beverage capsule, and this session includes speakers representative of that entire spectrum, discussing how they’re rethinking the numerous components necessary to enable the industrial compost of spent capsules without compromising taste. Italian coffee company Lavazza will be presenting their vision on the best way to move towards capsules that are compostable without sacrificing the performance expected from their brewing systems. Other confirmed speakers include representative from the Italian Composting Council, Ahlstrom, Club Coffee, and Nippon Gohsei for barrier films.
ADVANCEMENTS IN DAIRY, DESSERT AND CHILLED SNACK PACKAGING In rigid packaging, Ingeo has been used successfully in yogurt cups for several years. This session will focus on the supply chain developments that provide an end-to-end sales solution for rigid packaging. Reduced density performance sheet will be discussed by company representatives from MuCell and Arcil Synerlink. They will review the performance of Ingeo sheet on high speed forming, filling, and sealing packaging machinery.
KAIHAN KRIPPENDORFF The best-selling author of Outthink the Competition, Fast Company blogger, and business strategist sets an appropriate tone for the conference in an opening keynote address that speaks to the very heart of “ITR” - how companies can succeed by unlocking innovation and seizing opportunities others ignore.
JEN OWEN, E-NABLE Hear how the creation of the first 3D printed hand made for a 5 year old child has quickly evolved into a passionate volunteer network that is positively transformed the lives of children around the globe.

PROGRAM AT-A-GLANCE (Cont.)
NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN INGEO FLEXIBLE PACKAGING Designed for participants in the packaging supply chain spanning from suppliers to brand owners, this seminar on sustainable packaging explores the latest in Ingeo-based performance derived from films and sheet. Leading global confectionary company MARS provides the unifying theme for the flexibles section of the seminar. Together with their partner Rodenburg BioPolymers, Mars discuss their journey to develop a new lighter weight, pack-aging film that has the potential to change the way confectionary is packaged. Metalvuoto will unveil its latest Ingeo based technology with increased film barrier via a surface treatment that enables its use as a paper lamination for perishable and long shelf life foods. Void Technologies will describe a process that improves properties and reduces the density of a fiber resulting in improved fabric strength.
FOOD SERVICEWARE WORLD SERIES While food serviceware is a well-established market for Ingeo, rapid evolution in both products and supply chains continues, and this session illus-trates the latest developments on both fronts in an interactive case study format. Hear discussions which include:
PROTOTYPING THE FUTURE – NEW HORIZONS FOR INGEO IN 3D PRINTING The rapid evolution of enhanced material properties for 3D printing filament is taking Ingeo into new areas of application, including Ingeo-based prototypes and parts that rival key ABS properties. This ITR session covers filament, printers, and rapid prototyping, and is collectively designed to provide comprehensive information on the latest from resin to finished product, for filament producers, printer manufacturers, and brand owners that want to bring products to market faster and at less cost through 3D printing. Noteworthy speakers include Polymaker on filaments and D6 for rapid prototyping of packaging. And look forward to a keynote address at ITR by e-Nable on this non-profit’s open source 3D printing of prosthetic hands for children.
INGEO FIBERS AND NONWOVENS ADVANCEMENTS IN SINGLE-USE APPLICATIONS Recent developments in nonwovens have traditionally been a focus of ITR and 2016 will be no exception. The Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry (INDA) frames out the session, overviewing markets and application areas that promise new opportunities for Ingeo. This year major innova-tions featured include Hills, Inc. reporting on its new process for improving loft and performance of Ingeo nonwovens for greater comfort and func-tionality. The session wraps up in the best way possible where the unique properties of Ingeo nonwoven structures make it possible for Treleoni to offer a product with superior performance and economics compared to the competition.

2016 MEDIA PARTNERS
“This suggests an imminent escalation in the adoption of Ingeo PLA fibre by
the industry... A significant number of major suppliers to the global nonwovens industry have been present at this week’s Innovation Takes Root conference held by NatureWorks in Orlando, Florida.”
— Sustainable Nonwovens
“And for me, at least, this event is reminiscent
of a time decades ago when the big polymer producers would gather together other segments of the industry—machine builders, additive suppliers, and processors—to help each other learn how to tap the potential of an upstart family of materials that was challenging the established order...”
— Matthew H. Naitove, Plastics Technology
“Brand owner and converter speakers at
Innovation Takes Root 2014 turn the focus on PLA’s technical functionality. It is almost as though PLA is now being treated as (gasp!) a ‘normal commodity’ plastic.”
