A CHECKLIST OF THE WORKS OF JOHANN NEPOMUK HUMMEL

By JOEL SACHS

Few of the lesser masters of the past have received so much attention recently as Johann Nepomuk Hummel. After a lifetime of phenomenal success, Hummel passed rather quickly into oblivion, remembered as a pianist but grossly neglected as a composer. With the recent revival of interest in early-nineteenth-century music, however, Hummel's true accomplishments (as well as his failings) have been recognized, and his position as one of the key figures in the passage from classicism to romanticism acknowledged. Viewing Hummel anew has greatly illuminated our conception of the late-classic period, but it has also served to highlight the serious lack of complete and reliably-dated works-lists for the prolific composers of that period. In the case of very popular composers, the multiplicity of pirated early editions complicates the establishment of authoritative texts, and will continue to do so until better bibliographies appear. Furthermore, the lack of a coherent body of information obscures even the general patterns of an individual composer's development. In short, the early-nineteenth century will remain something of a jumble until some order can be put into the mass of surviving music.

It is hoped that this Checklist will at least clarify the compositional life of Hummel, one of history's most successful composer-virtuosos. It is meant to complement the recent Thematisches Verzeichnis der Werke von Johann Nepomuk Hummel compiled by Dr. Dieter Zimmerschied.1 While that catalog took a giant step toward setting Hummel's works in order, it has many serious defects, the most conspicuous of which is the omission of some 100 unpublished works. Other problems include the erroneous classification of some orchestral works as piano pieces because they were only published in piano reduction; the confusion of authentic English and French editions with pirated editions2; and,

finally, the lack of any index, which renders the catalog impenetrable without a priori knowledge of opus numbers. This Checklist, used in conjunction with the thematic catalog, should make possible a rather comprehensive picture of Hummel's activity as a composer.

Listing and Numbering A single chronological listing of Hummel's works appears to be

impossible. While publication dates can be established with fair certainty, and dates of composition can be known or estimated more-or-less accurately from the manuscripts, far too few manuscripts of the published works survive to permit a decent determination of their time of origin. The temptation to equate date of composition and date of publication must be resisted, even though Hummel published easily, for there is evidence that at least on some occasions he delayed publication of a work for years - as many as ten in the case of the Piano Concerto, op. 110. Since no unified chronology could be arrived at, it seemed necessary to employ separate chronologies for the published and unpublished compositions. Hummel's music has therefore been divided into categories (generally by medium of performance). Each category contains published compositions in order of date of publication (with date of composition where it is known), followed by unpublished compositions, arranged according to date of composition. Incomplete works conclude each category. While numbering of published works follows Dr. Zimmerschied's catalog, all unpublished works have been assigned new supplementary (S) numbers. The "WoO" numbers of the thematic catalog, which do not reflect chronology, are given in parentheses.

SCORING

Compositions published only in piano score have been listed according to the medium for which they were intended. For most works, the source of the original version can be found in the Hummel Thematic Catalog. In many cases, however, Dr. Zimmerschied has not given the precise instrumentation. While space does not permit a full listing here, suffice it to say that Hummel's orchestra normally included 2 each of flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons, horns, and trumpets, as well as strings and tympani. Some minor departures from this scheme occur, particularly in codas of the dance sets. Unfortunately, Dr. Zimmerschied's catalog lacks a number of manuscripts for orchestral and other compositions, some of which are unique sources of original instrumentations. I have given those of which I am aware in Appendix II.
