Overpopulation, industrialization, urbanization, and various economic activities have been causing air quality to go down significantly. In some large cities around the world, the sky is gray with smoke and pollutants for most days of the year. It is not uncommon to see people wearing masks when they go out in many Asian countries these days to protect themselves from the dangerously polluted air. More and more people are getting respiratory conditions and diseases.

And then there is Covid-19, which has made 2020 a wasted year for many, if not most of us, and which unfortunately is not stopping soon. Yest, this is probably not the last pandemic we have to deal with.

All the challenges facing us, especially the ongoing pandemic, help to show that all the current equip-ment and devices on the market right now either fail to give provide the protection we need or are not comfortable to use for long stretches of time.

What we doVihelm upgrades the concept of a traditional PAPR by adding ingenious features to extend product’s use and maximize comfort, convenience and communication.

Basic PPE (personal protective equipment) products, are simply too basic to deal with something as dangerous as Covid-19. An upgrade is PAPRs (Powered Air Purifying Respirators), which are designed for short-term wear and they can cause irritation, headaches and pain if worn for long, which is not suitable for people who need long-term protection in such case as an pandemic or those who work long shifts in dangerous environments. Vihelm aims to fix that problem. With Vihelm, you don’t have to be torn between two options: staying home safely without an income or risking your life while trying to make a living.

Notable innovative features, including a built-in glove, 2 side pockets, 6 holes covered by latex to scratch the head on top of the helmet, allow wearers to carry out basic activities such as wiping their face, scratching their nose and head, even eating or drinking without having to take their helmet off and risking getting exposed.

Vihelm - the Mobile Isolation HelmetOur first creation, Vihelm - the Mobile Isolation Helmet, is designed for people who need complete protection for long stretches of time.

Vihelm includes two main parts - a respirator blower and a helmet - which are connected by a breathing tube. The blower with 2 filter layers (a non-woven filter and a HEPA filter), which can be worn on the waist with a belt, continuously pushes clean air into the helmet through the breathing tube.

The helmet is fitted with an adjustable strap to completely cover the wearer’s head, keeping out pathogens, pollutants, and respiratory droplets.

Vihood - the Lightweight Respirator HoodAiming to make products that can cater to various occasions, we also created Vihood. This is a more comfortable version that you can wear on a daily basis, when you're out and about doing chores or when you're using public transport.

Meanwhile, wide-viewing visor and voice-out valves enable effective communication. Vihlem provides a comprehensive solution for fighting Covid-19 as well as any respiratory pandemics in the future. What’s more, it can also be used as an effective PPE for people who live or work in toxic and/or polluted environments.

Vihelm's multi-layered filter keeps out all health threats. A nonwoven filter blocks respiratory droplets while a HEPA filter captures 100% particulate matter down to 2.5 microns in width.

The most ingenious feature is a built-in glove that allows safe access to the face. You can wipe your face, scratch your nose or rub your eyes at ease.

The superior blower provides 6 cubic feet of purified air every minute, meeting NIOSH standards. Run like crazy and you are still able to breathe clean, purified air to your heart's content.

Two exhalation valves are placed on two sides near the bottom of the helmet, helping maintain positive pressure inside the helmet. Each valve is covered by nonwoven so the air out is also filtered, keeping the people around safe.

You can store personal items like tissues or glasses or even your favorite snack in 2 pockets attached to both sides of the helmet. So it won't get messy if you sneeze. And the snack bar would be a life saver if you work long shifts or have little to no breaks.

Vihelm’s powerful blower can supply 6 ft³ of fresh air into your breathing zone every minute. As a result, the CO2 build-up inside the helmet is kept at 2,471 ppm (part per million), or 0.2471%.

Do you have to meet a lot of people during work?

Temperature and Humidity

If so, you are probably not a stranger to the severe discomfort of long-term mask-wearing. It leaves your face painful and itchy. It raises the humidity and temperature inside the breathing zone, fogging up your glasses and causing rashes and pimples.

Version 1, with another model of blower, had already shown remarkable power in keeping the temperature increase to only 0.9°C. With version 3, we have gone even further and reduced the difference to only 0.3°C.

Thanks to the superior blower, the air in the headgear constantly moves and provides a feeling of coolness. When test participants put on VIHELM and walk around indoors, the difference in tempera-ture and humidity becomes virtually unnoticeable: an increase of 0.54°F (0.3°C) in temperature and 6% in humidity.

This is a great result compared to the concentration of 5,500 to 11,700 ppm in other surgical helmets and PAPRs measured by the CDC. Even inside N95, surgical, and cloth masks, the concentration can vary from 9,000, up to 14,000, depending on the experiments.

OSHA sets the legal exposure limit to only 5,000 ppm averaged over an 8-hour workday, as high levels of CO2 build-up in the breathing zone could impair thinking, cause headache and dizziness, induce unconsciousness and even death.
