FROM THE PASTORFROM THE PASTORFROM THE PASTOR

Saturday, November 11th, is, of course, Veterans’ Day — the day on which we as a country pay due honor and respect to those who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States. As many of you know, I am a veteran myself of the United States Army. Everyone always asks me if I was a chaplain — I was not, as it was in the days before I became a priest. I served proudly for eight years in the Military Intelligence Corps. Often when I say that I was in Military Intelligence, someone will think that it’s cute to quote an old joke from that dreadful old TV show “MASH,” and say something like, “Military Intelligence, isn’t that an oxymoron?” My, my, my: how deeply offensive I find that. The men and women of the Military Intelligence Corps were some of the most intelligent, dedicated, and competent individuals I have ever known in my life. So, be warned not

to make that old joke to me — I don’t react well to it.

November 11th is also my father’s birthday, who was himself a World War II veteran of the United States Army Air Force. All three of my brothers also served (one in the Marines, one in the Air Force, and one in the Army, besides me). My nephew is a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the Coast Guard. A niece served in the Army. Currently, another of my nieces serves as a Naval Intelligence officer. Obviously, we are a military family. And, of course, November 11th is Armistice Day — the day on which

the fighting in World War I was brought to an end. And it is the feast day of one of my very favorite saints, St. Martin of Tours.

Pope Francis has declared November 19th (the 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time this year) as the first World Day of the Poor. The pope hopes to raise everyone’s awareness about the presence of the poor among us and has asked every parish throughout the world to participate in some way. Here at Our Lady of Lourdes that weekend, we will take up a special second collection for Pathway House, Greenwood’s local homeless shelter. It is a worthy cause, and I urge you to support it as you are able. All pro-ceeds from that second collection will go to Pathway House. If paying by check, please make it out to OLOL and write “Pathway House” on the memo line — this will enable us to consolidate the collection and send a single check for the entire

amount to Pathway House.

Although it’s still a couple of weeks away, please note that on Thanksgiving Day (November 23rd), we will be celebrating our Mass at 9 a.m. If you’re in town, please join us. As well as an opportunity to give thanks to God in the manner which He has deemed most appropriate (i.e., the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass), it provides a further chance to show solidarity with the poor: those who attend are urged to bring non-perishable food items to bring up in the offertory procession and which will be given to the local Food Bank. Additionally, the monetary collection that day will go in its entirety to Greater Greenwood United Minis-

tries (which, I can tell you, does some wonderful work in the local community).
