The students used the checklist to help evaluate their own writing and set goals for how to improve. After that, students had time to write independently and continue focusing on storytelling. For a separate assignment, students continued writing an opinion piece about whether or not they think kids can change the world using examples from books we have read this week (Boxes for Katje, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, and Alex's Amazing Lemonade Stand). In reading, we read an informational article from National Geographic magazine about different types of deserts. We practiced using text features to help increase our comprehension of the article. We used a graphic organizer to identify the topic, main idea, and key details of the article. This is challenging; we will be practicing all year. The students practiced doing this independently by reading an article about deadly predators. Homework

Class Update       In math, we practiced various addition strategies when adding three digit numbers. Please see the email (9/15) I sent today for more information 9/15.  In writing, the students learned strategies they can use to help them spell words they don't know. Then, students had time to write independently and continue focusing on storytelling.

In reading, we read the book The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind and identified how the main character changed the world and contributed to the common good.

In science, we analyzed the results from yesterday's experiment. We determined that the texture of the ramp DOES affect the speed the ball travels down the ramp. The ramp covered in wax paper caused the ball to roll the fastest and the ramp with the plastic wrap caused the ball to roll the slowest. We discussed why this might have happened and realized that the plastic wrap and the rubber of the bouncy ball must have created a lot of friction, which slowed the ball down. The wax paper was super smooth, so there must have been less friction which allowed the ball to roll faster. Then, we conducted another experiment to try to answer our testable question: How does the type of ball affect the speed the ball travels down the ramp? Each table group was assigned a different ball (bouncy, wiffle, Styrofoam, ping pong, and marble). We discussed the importance of controlling variables-making sure we keep as many things the same as possible so it doesn't impact our results. We will analyze our results tomorrow.

In math, the students completed a rounding assessment. Then, we practiced various addition strategies when adding three digit numbers. Here are two examples:

In writing, we read part of the book Come On, Rain! by Karen Hesse. We are using this book as a mentor text so we can use Karen Hesse's storytelling as inspiration for our own writing. After identifying things we liked that Karen did in her writing, the students tried to do that in their own writing. We

In reading, we reread the book Boxes for Katje. While reading, the students sequenced the main events. After reading, we discussed how Katje and Rosie both contributed to the common good and how their actions affected the sequence of events.

Class Update In the morning, Mrs. R came by to work with us on exploring the features of Google Chrome and our Chromebooks! We added some bookmarks to our bookmark bar, learned about properly shutting the Chromebook down, and more!   In science, we conducted an experiment to try to answer our testable question: How does the texture of the ramp affect the speed the ball travels down the ramp? Each table group was assigned a different textured ramp (felt, wax paper, plastic wrap, cupboard liner, sand paper). We discussed the important of controlling variables-making sure we keep as many things the same as possible so it doesn't impact our results. We will analyze our results tomorrow. In math, we used rounding to help us estimate in word problems. If we see the word ABOUT in a word problem, that gives us a clue that they want us to estimate by rounding to find an approximate answer (not the exact answer). Rounding helps us make friendly numbers to work with which makes it easier to add or subtract.

In writing, we explored the difference between reporting and storytelling. While writing, we want to include details that make our reader feel like they're there with us! We want to tell the story bit by bit with action and talk. The students applied this to their writing today.

In reading, we read the book Boxes for Katje. Before we began reading, we reviewed the genre of realistic fiction/historical fiction. We practiced asking and answering questions before, during, and after reading.

Class Update In the morning, the students completed the MAP-R. Please see the email I sent on 9/6 for more info about it. Due to how long the test took, we did not have time for math or our weekly timed basic facts quiz. We will have the basic facts quiz next Friday.

Page 6: 9/16montgomeryschoolsmd.org/uploadedFiles/schools... · Web viewWe were looking to see if they were telling the story bit by bit and including action, talk, and feelings. The students

In science, the students played TinkerBall (here's the link: http://invention.si.edu/tinker-ball). The students were challenged to get the ball into the cup in different ways using different materials. We also headed outside to explore how the texture of a surface can impact a ball's motion (i.e. how fast and/or how far the ball rolls) by rolling balls on different surfaces (grass, sidewalk, asphalt). It was so much fun!

In writing, the students learned another strategy they can use when they can't think of a true story to write about. They think of a place that means something to them, list memories/small moments they have there, and then choose one. The students wrote fast and furious again today! I'm so proud of them and their focus.

In reading, we reread the book Crow Boy. While reading, I challenged the students to think about how Chibi felt and his point of view throughout the story. After reading, we discussed how important it is for readers to make connections to books they read so they can better understand the story. We practiced making connections to how Chibi felt (lonely, excluded, sad).

In the morning, the students completed the MAP-M. Please see the email I sent on 9/6 for more info about it.

In math, the students practiced rounding two and three digit numbers to the nearest ten using a number line.  Then, they played math games to practice rounding numbers to the nearest ten, practiced their addition/subtraction basic facts, or used math clues to help them solve a riddle using the hundred chart.

In science, we ran out of time. We will do the TinkerBall activity tomorrow, but if your child would like to try it at home, here's the link: http://invention.si.edu/tinker-ball

Class Update In math, the students practiced rounding three digit numbers to the nearest hundred using the 1-1,000 chart. Then, they played math games to practice their addition/subtraction basic facts or used math clues to help them solve a riddle using the hundred chart.

In science, we discussed pushes and pulls and how both are forces that can change an object's motion. We observed and described changes in an object's motion. We also practiced using positional words to describe an objects position.

In reading, the students completed a preassessment. They had to read two different texts (one fiction and one non-fiction) and had to answer two different questions about the article. Later, the students looked at two pictures. Before I presented the pictures to the students, I told them to tell me the FIRST thing that they saw when they looked at the pictures. The students saw two different things for each picture. In the first picture, they saw a young lady with her back turned to us or an old woman's face. In the second picture, they saw a rabbit or a duck. While discussing what we saw, I told the students that we all have a different point of view, which is why we were able to see different things while looking at the pictures. To help the students better understand this concept, I read them the book The Pain and the Great One by Judy Blume. The story is told from two different points of view-one part is told from the older sister's point of view and the other part is told from the younger brother's point of view. It was fascinating how differently they viewed things! After that, students got into their groups and continued writing a story to go with their group's wordless picture book. In order to do this, the students have to make inferences about what is happening from the pictures.

Class Update In the morning, the students shared their Brown Bag (Auto)Biographies! It was so fun getting to know each other and realizing how much we all have in common. After that, we had our first class meeting. We did our team builder activity, compliments, and I'm So Proud Of...board. Then, I introduced the Issue Bin and how it's used. Later, I introduced ClassDojo! ClassDojo is an online tool I use to give students feedback on their behavior by identifying positives and identifying areas that need work. The students are so excited!

In writing, we reviewed the book The Best Part of Me and the students wrote about their favorite body part and why it's their favorite. I took pictures of their favorite part and will get them printed so the students can glue it to their explanation of why it's their favorite!

Later, we finished reading How to Behave and Why. Each table group wrote down a list of classroom rules. I will look at them over the weekend and use their ideas to create our class rules!

In math, the students identified patterns in the addition table and in hundred chart. Then, they used math clues to help them solve a riddle using the hundred chart.

At the end of the day, we had our Movie and Snack that the students earned for filling our class cotton ball jar. YAY MRS. TALVAC'S CLASS! Mr. Lee stopped by to visit and complimented us, so they students filled the jar a SECOND time. We will vote on their next class reward next week.

Class Update We began math with a timed (3 minute) assessment of their addition and subtraction basic facts (50 questions each). Then, the students worked on Me By the Numbers (using numbers to describe themselves) while I met with groups to look at patterns in the addition table.

Later, we continued reading How to Behave and Why. When we finish the book, we will finish developing our classroom rules.

In reading, the students made inferences while reading the wordless picture book Rainstorm about the main character's actions and thoughts. We worked together as a class to write the story based on our inferences. Then, the students worked with groups to look at a wordless picture book and make inferences to write the story of what was happening.

In writing, we read the book The Best Part of Me and the students began thinking about their favorite body part and why it's their favorite.

Class Update We began the day with an introduction to the Chromebooks! The students are learning how to properly care for, use, and maintain their Chromebooks. They also set up their Google Classroom accounts. After that, they took a spelling preassessment.

In the afternoon, the students completed a writing preassessment. Later, we learned about the process we use to make inferences. I began by telling students that they make inferences all the time! To demonstrate, I performed two skits in which they had to determine how I was feeling. The students used clues that I gave them (both verbal and non-verbal) to make their inference. I explained that they were able to figure out how I was feeling, even though I didn't TELL them. After that, we discussed how this could help us when we're reading a book. The students realized that the author often gives us clues with his/her word choice and we can figure out how a character is feeling by what they're saying/doing. Later, I challenged the students to work with their table groups to create skits in which they would give us clues to help determine the secret word I had given them (words I gave them were: bored, excited, nervous, scared, rude). I was so impressed with their creativity!

Class UpdateWe began the day with an assembly in the APR with Mr. Lee, Ms. Gordon, and Mrs. Zeitlin. We learned more about the Carderock Cub program and the reading program (which are both different than in past years). Mr. Lee also went over his expectations of students in the hallway and at lunch/recess.

When we returned to the classroom, the students worked in teams to complete the MARSHMALLOW CHALLENGE! Ask your child to learn more.

After that, we read the book A Bad Case of Stripes and discussed the main character's thoughts and feelings. We identified the lesson of the story: it's important to be yourself without worrying about what other people think of you. Then, the students shared a unique fact about them we wouldn't know just by looking at them.

In the afternoon, the students completed a math preassessment so I can see what math concepts they know and which ones they need more practice with.

We began reading the book How to Behave and Why to help us develop our classroom rules. We will finish this tomorrow.

We ended the day with a tour of our classroom! We went over the classroom library procedures and class jobs.

HomeworkMath: Practice + and - basic facts (your child should memorize their basic addition and subtraction facts from 0-20). You can use flashcards, apps, or just oral practice.

Reading: Read for 20 minutes every night

Other: Students need to think about 5 different objects that represent their personality, their interests, and/or what's important to them to put in their Brown Bag (Auto)Biography assignment. They must complete the back of paper to explain why they included each object. Remember, the objects cannot have their name on it and should not contain pictures of them. The 5 objects should be put in a plain brown paper bag (like the ones used for lunch) and brought to school this Friday 9/2. Their name should not be on the bag either! On Friday I will collect all of the bags and then distribute them randomly throughout the class. The students will then look through the bag and use the objects as clues to try to figure out whose bag it is. After that, students will share the objects in their bag. This is a great way to learn more about each other and to see our common interests! As always, this should be written down in their planner and the Brown Bag (Auto)Biography assignment sheet should be in their yellow Take Home folder. I presented mine in class today so they should have an understanding of the assignment. Students should show you everything in their Take Home folder.

Class Update

We had an amazing first day of school! I can't believe how fast it went by! It was so much fun getting to know your children better and starting to build our classroom community. I'm looking forward to a wonderful, productive year!

Today, we read the book The First Day Jitters and completed a class consensogram to show how we are feeling about the first day of school. Then, we reviewed some of our classroom routines/procedures, expectations for behavior, and positive consequences (ask them about cotton balls in our Class Cotton Ball Jar). We will continue this all week. Later, we read the book How Full is Your Bucket? and discussed how we can be bucket fillers! This led into a discussion about what the students can expect from each other and what they can expect from me by completing a chart that lists things that a great classmate/great teacher is, does, says, and is not. At the end of the day, we got to know our fellow third graders better by playing a bingo game outside. Thank you for sending in your children with (mostly) already labeled/organized supplies. I appreciate it! It saved us SO much time today!! If your child was missing supplies or didn't bring them in already labeled, I took care of it in class today.  You can take a look at their supplies at Back to School Night!

Tomorrow we will continue doing community building activities to learn more about each other. We will also talk more about behavioral expectations and work as a class to develop a set of classroom rules.

HomeworkMath: Practice + and - basic facts (your child should memorize their basic addition and subtraction facts from 0-20). You can use flashcards, apps, or just oral practice.
