THE COACHES CLEVELAND BROWNS - ERIC MANGINIEric Mangini was named the 12th full-time head coach in the history of the Cleveland Browns franchise on January 8, 2009. For Mangini, it marked a return to his NFL roots, having kicked off his tenure in the league as a ball boy and an in-tern in the Browns’ public relations department in 1994. His tireless work ethic was just as evident in that fi rst year as it is today, a quality that led then-head coach Bill Belichick to add Mangini to

the team’s coaching staff in 1995. In his 15 years of NFL coaching experi-ence, Mangini has been a part of six teams that qualifi ed for the playoffs, including fi ve that captured division crowns and three that came away with the Lombardi Trophy as Super Bowl champions. During his fi rst year at the helm in Cleveland, Mangini displayed a sense of resiliency that rubbed off on his team and led to the Browns winning their fi nal four games of the year. Prior to being hired by the Browns, Mangini was the head coach of the New York Jets (2006-08). In 2006, Mangini took over a team that had gone 4-12 the previous year and guided them to a record of 10-6 and a Wild Card playoff berth. The Jets started with a 5-5 mark before compiling victories in fi ve of their last six contests, including their fi nal three. Prior to joining the Jets, Mangini spent six seasons with the New England Patriots (2000-05). His fi rst fi ve seasons were spent as de-fensive backs coach (2000-04) before being promoted to defensive coor-dinator in 2005. Mangini’s fi rst coaching opportunity came in 1995 as an assistant on the Browns’ staff. Ted Marchibroda retained Mangini when the team moved to Baltimore in 1996 and became the Ravens. Mangini was an assistant coach with the Jets under head coach Bill Parcells from 1997-99.

BROWNS TO UNVEIL RING OF HONORThe Browns’ best will be on display starting in 2010 at Cleveland Browns Stadium. The Browns will pay homage to their great his-tory - one of the richest in the NFL - by introducing the Cleve-land Browns Ring of Honor. The initial group of inductees will consist of the 16 former Browns enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The names of these 16 greats will be prominently displayed on the facade of the upper deck of the stadium.

The Ring of Honor induction ceremony and unveiling will take place at halftime of the Browns’ regular season home opener, against Kansas City on Sunday, September 19, and will culmi-nate a week-long celebration of activities.

The Browns are also partnering with the Pro Football Hall of Fame to create a special season-long exhibit known as Heritage Hall. This 4,600-square foot exhibition space will be located in Browns Town at Cleveland Browns Stadium and will serve as a tribute to the club’s storied past. This area will consist of dis-plays from the 16 Ring of Honor inductees, including their busts, as well as memorabilia and photography from the team’s history.

The Browns will also reinstitute their Legends Program in 2010. This program, which started in 2001, honors the men who have contributed to the success of the Cleveland Browns organization.

The Browns signed punter Reggie Hodg-es, who picked up where Zastudil left off by booting a career-high 15 punts inside the 20. The Browns’ total of 40 punts inside the 20 this season tied for fourth in NFL history.

PILING UP THE YARDSRunning back Jerome Harrison fi nished the season with three consecutive 100-yard performances. He became the fi rst Browns player to accomplish that feat since the 2004 season, when Lee Suggs totaled 105 against San Diego on December 19, 143 at Mi-ami on December 26 and 131 at Houston on January 2, 2005.

Running back Jerome Harrison became the fi rst Browns player to follow a 200-yard rushing performance with a 100-yard perfor-mance. Harrison’s 286 rushing yards at Kansas City (12/20/09) marked the eighth time that a Browns running back reached the 200-yard plateau. The next week, he racked up 148 rushing yards against Oakland (12/27/09). Harrison’s combined 434 rushing yards ranked fi fth in NFL history in back-to-back games.

ERIC MANGINI SAID...(On making improvements week to week)- “One of the things that I talked to the players a lot about, we talked about it before the brown and white game, we talked about it again this week: win or lose, you come in and you look at the tape and you draw value from the experience. You draw value from whatever happened and it only has value if you can take that information and apply it to the next time that you play and you stay consistent with the approach. Often times in a post-game analysis, if you win you can gloss over some things that have to be fi xed. If you lose, you can harp on some things overly so. It was a good chance for me to go through that process again.”

(On the one thing that most needs to change this season)- “I don’t look at it as change as much as I look at it as being consistent with what we did at the end of last season. I thought we developed a lot over the course of last season and really understood how we had to play, what the approach had to be and what Browns football was and how we were going to be in each game. Those lessons are valuable if you can take those lessons and carry them over into the new season. Also indoctrinating all the guys that have come in, whether it’s rook-ies or free agents and all of us helping them understand exactly what we have to do, the way we have to play in order to be successful.”

(On his comfort level heading into his second season compared to last season)- “I feel really good about the progress we’ve made, the strides we’ve made. The second year is different. Guys under-stand expectations. There are so many things that you don’t have to cover because they get it and they become teachers to people who are new and that helps a lot. Having the staff together for a second year is huge. Matt Eberfl us was a guy that came in from college, so he was learning this system. Rob (Ryan) had come in from Oakland, done some different things there. Getting together there on defense, same thing on offense, we really had a fi rst time coordinator and then you had guys from all different places getting together and now they understand me more. The staff meetings are more fl uent. All that stuff is more fl uent, so that’s been really good. I think we had just moved into our house at this point last year, so that’s been really good, for the boys too, who had a year of school. There’s always the home component. There’s the work part that you guys see, but it’s nice for everybody’s families to be established and be over the hump as well.”

(On if it is important for the team to connect with the Browns history)- “I think it’s important for anybody that comes in to a team to be able to appreciate the history of the team. It’s been nice for me to be able to have guys like Paul Warfi eld around and him talk to the team or Jim Brown around and have him talk to the team or Bernie (Kosar), him talk to the team. It’s a rich history and it’s got to be appreciated. That’s why we start in rookie camp with showing them some clips through the decades of the guys that really built this team.”

(On if Joe Haden is making progress in his coverage skills)- “He’s making strides and it’s good that he’s getting to play as much as he’s playing because there are a ton of things to learn out there. There are some things that we are going to continue to work on and stress with him, which will help his improvement, which will create some jumps in his improvement. He seemed more comfortable out there operating with the group, but we have got some areas that we are go-ing to focus in on with him that I think can really help him.”

(On the effect Jake Delhomme has had on others in the locker room)- “I think it’s just a function of who Jake is. He’s a really good guy. He’s fun to coach, he’s smart, he has a presence, the guys like him. That’s him. I’m sure when you talk to the people in Carolina, that’s what they say about him as well. It’s just who he is and I’m happy we got him.”

(On T.J. Ward’s progression)- “He’s continuing to improve, but he’s pretty new to this whole deal. With rookies, he’s going to make mistakes, they all do. We are going to work to limit how many of them there are. The one thing that I really like about T.J. is that his mistakes are going to be fast and someone is probably going to get hit. Even if he is wrong, someone is going to get hit. That’s what you talk about is that you can make a mistake, but make it fast and hard. Don’t make it slow and soft.”

(On if he has been pleased with the wide receivers)- “I’ve been pleased. I hope you guys see some of the progress that Brian (Ro-biskie) has made, both through camp and in games. Mohamed (Massaquoi) had the one game where he wasn’t able to participate, but again last week had the really nice play on the slant for 29 yards. He’s grown as a receiver, his consistency has improved. Chansi (Stuckey), you saw some of the things that he can do, not just in catching the ball, but some of the catch and run plays that he makes. To me, Josh (Cribbs) is another guy, I think he lead the team in receptions last week. It’s just good to see. The other thing that’s good to see is the ball goes to a lot of people and they catch it when it’s there. That makes it harder to defend. When you have to defend one guy, at least you know where to concentrate the forces. When you have got to defend them all, then you have to spread out. That’s a positive thing, forcing the defense to defend the whole fi eld.”

(On if Brian Robiskie will be the second starting wide receiv-er)- “For us, it’s not about who starts the game. It’s never really been about that, it’s more what packages they play in. On any giv-en day, somebody else could start the game, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t have faith in the other person. It just means in that package, he was the starter. When the play-by-play comes out, his name will be on there. I have faith in all of those guys whether it’s him or Josh or Chansi or if we start with 22 personnel, which is two tight ends, two backs and one wide receiver. It’s not really about who starts it, it’s how meaningful of a role they can have. I think all of those guys can have real meaningful roles for us.”

(On making cuts for the fi nal roster)- “The other thing I talked to the guys about is just what a diffi cult time of the year this is be-cause there is a lot of good people in that locker room and there’s a lot of good players and unfortunately, we can’t keep them all. It’s one of those things where I want you to know how much I appreci-ate the hard work that they put in and that whether they are with us on the 53, on the practice squad or they move on, that I am going to be there to help them.”

BROWNS PLAYER QUOTESLB David Bowens(On what he sees this year with the new defensive additions in comparison to last year)- “A lot of people in different places and everyone on the same page. We’ve gone out and installed all of our defense since March, so everyone is on the same page and everyone knows what they are supposed to do. As opposed to last year, there was kind of a lot of uncertainty on the proper way to run different things. If you look at the big plays that we gave up last year, a lot of it was mental errors. We’ve eliminated a lot of those mistakes and everyone is on the same page. The new people that we have just added a lot of quality to what we had already.”

WR Joshua Cribbs(On if it is exciting that the skill players on offense are a young group)- “Yes, defi nitely. We are getting better and better and we have a lot of years to go. It’s helping us that we have a veteran quarterback that can spread the ball around and get it into these playmakers’ hands. The good thing about it is that we are not con-centrating on getting the ball to one person. Everybody is touching the ball and that’s what’s good about it. When the quarterback gets the game ball and not just a receiver or a running back, then you know the ball is being spread around to guys.”

(On if Jake Delhomme has done anything as a leader that is surprising to him)- “No, he’s been living up to what I’ve thought of him. He’s a great veteran quarterback. He spreads the ball around really good. He leads the offense. What’s key to me is leading the offense. He leads the team well and that’s what we look for him to do and he’s doing a good job.”

QB Jake Delhomme (On if his faith in his wide receivers has been justifi ed by their play)- “I think without a doubt. I think they all make plays, every single one of them. We have put them in all kinds of different positions, we move them around a great deal and it’s almost by committee. They are egoless, in a good way. Everybody has to have an ego to a certain extent, but they’re egoless when it comes to the team. That can make for a very healthy offense, I believe.”

(On him previously saying that he would have a feel for the team by the end of the preseason)- “I think at the end of the pre-season, you have an idea, but I also did say that day that when we went to the Super Bowl in Carolina, I did not go with the ones until halftime of the fi rst game. It takes time. You don’t know whether you have a good team or a bad team, when is that defi ning moment going to come? Are you going to get over the hump or are you go-ing to fall back down? That’s something that we don’t know when it’s going to happen, at what point in the season where, ‘Okay, this is kind of who we are.’ I really like where we are at. I think we have done some decent things. There’s a lot of room for improve-ment, but I like where we are at. I like the mindset of the guys. We do a lot of different things offensively and I like the mindset the guys have. The coaches, they throw a lot of stuff at us and it’s going well. I think the biggest thing is you have to control what you can control. For us, offensively as the Cleveland Browns, we can only worry about us and just try to get better each and every day. We will see the results as the season starts.”

LB Scott Fujita(On how the defense is coming along)- “It’s coming along great. You have a lot of guys who can do a lot of different things within the scheme, and that’s good. You have to have smart guys who communicate well and can get on the same page. From that stand-point, it’s player friendly.”

(On playing inside and/or outside linebacker this year)- “I’ve done a lot of these different things throughout my career. Again, physically you have to train your body to do certain things a certain way. From the mental standpoint, it’s just learning the scheme. There are only so many different ways you can run coverages and blitzes and a lot of us have seen it all. Now, it’s just putting it to-gether and communicating it the right way.”

RB Jerome Harrison(On the fi nish the team had last year)- “That was a huge fi n-ish for us. My offensive line dominated across the board, from tight ends all the way to the backside guard. I think as a unit we performed very well and held each other accountable and got into a good groove. I think after these fi rst couple days of practice the offensive line and the tight ends, running backs and the fullback, I think, are ahead of schedule. I think we are on pace and I think we have a real good feel for each other now.”

(On Jake Delhomme being a leader)- “Throughout his whole career, he has been a leader. You talk to guys that played against him and the fi rst thing that they say is, ‘You have a true competitor out there. He is going to line up to play and lead all of these guys.’ You can only respect that.”

WR Brian Robiskie(On if the chemistry is starting to show on the offense)- “Yes, I think that is something that started all the way back in OTAs for us. It starts in the meeting rooms, sitting with those guys talking through some of the plays, talking through what they’re seeing, talking through what we’re seeing, so we can get on the same page and once we get on the fi eld, you can go through it and just build upon it. I think that it’s not something that you can reach and all of a sudden you’re at that pinnacle and that’s it. It’s something that you can continue to develop over time and I think we are just continuing to do that.”

OL Joe Thomas(On if he’s become a leader of the team)- “I feel like that’s hap-pening. Last year, was my fi rst year as a captain. I feel like I’m starting to step up in the locker room and meeting rooms and hope-fully, trying to carry that over for another year and improve on that. Getting with Jake Delhomme and trying to kind of get this offense moving in the direction that we want.”

BROWNS 27PACKERS 24

August 14, 2010Lambeau Field, Green Bay, Wis.

The Cleveland Browns started strong and fi nished with a last-second 27-24 victory over the Green Bay Packers in the 2010 preseason opener for both teams. The Browns hit the ground running on their opening drive as quarterback Jake Delhomme led an impressive 80-yard drive that ended in a four-yard touchdown run by running back Jerome Harrison. On the drive, Del-homme completed 6 of 7 passes for 66 yards. On the fi rst play of the ensuing offensive series by Green Bay, defensive lineman Ahtyba Rubin forced a fumble off of Packers running back Ryan Grant, which Cleveland capitalized on with a 13-yard pass from quarterback Seneca Wallace to wide receiver Brian Robiskie three plays later, giving the Browns a 14-0 advantage. The Packers answered back with two touchdowns of their own, knotting the game at 14. Wal-lace later connected with tight end Benjamin Watson on a 20-yard strike to give the Browns a 21-14 lead heading into the half. Green Bay would score 10 unanswered points to give the Packers a 24-21 lead, before kicker Phil Dawson connected on a 58-yard fi eld goal to tie the game at 24-24. After the Browns defense forced a three-and-out, Dawson made a 46-yard fi eld goal as time expired to seal the win.
