“My first job was at a clothing store in Carrollton, Ga. I was asked to model outfits for the local newspaper and I was asked to find a male model for the job as well. There was a “gorgeous” guy that I had my eye on in one of my classes at West GA College. I mustered up the courage to ask him to model with me and to my surprise, he said yes. We became great friends through this experience but I luckily realized he wasn’t someone I cared to date since he never asked me out anyway.”

York who treated us like family. Capiche? The best part of the job is they let us eat all the ice cream we wanted. So, of course, we did. We created frozen concoctions you won’t find on any hidden menu. Eventually the novelty wore off. But I held the owners in awe. They knew that by giving us this freedom we would eventually tire of it and they wouldn’t suffer the financial loss of “missing” inventory – nor would they have to deal with any issues of mistrust. They were a sweet couple who treated us teenagers with respect and we treated them with respect. Unlike my next boss, manager of a party supply store, who hated her workers…but that’s a story for another day.

Meet the Staff...

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Labor Day “constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.” This issue we’re celebrating Labor Day and going Back to School!

And in acknowledgement of Labor Day the staff discussed our first jobs, our worst jobs and our favorite jobs. Everybody has stories of their entry into the working world – usually these first jobs involve retail or fast food and those industries naturally lend themselves to humor. My first job – which also happened to be my favorite – was working at Carvel Ice Cream in Florida. The owners were an Italian couple from New

this page you’ll hear some of the funny anecdotes. And we’d love to hear yours! Visit us on facebook.com/85 South.

What our readers may not know is that many of the folks who work at 85 South also either own local, small businesses or work at other local companies. The staff of 85 South is comprised of small-business owners, working for a small business (85 South magazine) supporting small businesses. It’s the ultimate small-business trifecta. And, we are proud to announce that 85 South / Out & About has been selected as one of the top 10 finalists in this year’s Newnan-Coweta Chamber Small Business of the Year presented by SouthTowne Motors. The winner will be announced at the Small Business of the Year Awards Luncheon on August 21.

We would like to thank our staff for all the work they put into making this magazine a success and upholding our mission, “To inform and entertain the citizens of 85 South, from East Point to West Point.”

We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Labor Day. But before you break out the brats and fire up the grill, it’s Back to School. To help you through this time of year we’ve provided you with a school-related section with great information on buying school supplies, dealing with

distracted students, packing healthy lunches and technology in the classroom. The transition to structure and discipline may not always be an easy one, but hopefully we’ll help you get through it.

Speaking of getting schooled, Gwen Patterson encourages us to educate ourselves on the legislative system in her column, About Horses. This month she talks about a seemingly well-intentioned bit of equine-related legislation that is taking place in Tennessee that will affect us here in Georgia. Be sure to read her article to learn more.

We hope that you will send us your summer and Labor Day holiday photos! Email them to us at [email protected] or post them on our Facebook page (Facebook.com/85South). “Thinking back in time, my first job was in a local small grocery market during high school. My responsibilities were stock-ing shelves and delivering grocery orders to customers’ houses or apartments. At that time a 10 cent tip was big money. My favorite job was when I started as a clerk in a bank. The company supported its employ-ees who were eager to advance. College tuition was paid for by the company and they offered an in-house executive train-ing program for those who qualified. I took advantage of the opportunity they of-fered. After a number of hard working and sacrificing years, I’m happy to say I retired as Executive Vice President. It was a great rewarding experience.”

“My first job was cleaning toilets and chipping gum off of the drive-way at the Dairy Queen. My parents were

my boss and wanted me to understand the meaning of work. I got it. My favorite job is being a mother. It’s definitely the toughest, but the most rewarding.”

KATIE VAN SCHOOR

“My first job was at Steak N’ Shake where I waited tables and slung steakburgers. My favorite job is my current one as a journal-ist. I’m endlessly curious so learning about new things every day is great. I love being able to cover subjects like music, art and culture. My least favorite job was working at a clothing boutique because I never took home a paycheck!” Lindsay is our new-est addition to the 85 South team. She will be writing the About Live Entertainment column. Welcome Lindsay!

“I worked at Old Time Pottery in the dinnerware department in the summer of 1994. I lasted 9 days. After 9 days of 10 hour shifts stocking pastel coffee cups and discussing the features and benefits of Oneida dinner plates, then

driving an hour to play summer baseball, I opted to move onto other career options. I still get a little twitchy when walking through those departments.”

JOHN HARRIS

“My favorite job was when I worked for a marketing firm in Or-lando, Florida. It was fun when we would pitch to represent the different clients....One client was T G Lee Dairy products. When we had the presenta-tion in our office we

brought in a live cow and everyone had a carton of T G Lee milk on their desk. Ex-plaining why we had a cow in the elevator was quite amusing.”

RENE HUNT

SAL CITRANO “As a provincial, my first engineer-ing job was in Paris; I hate big city but I enjoy to visit musea, and Paris is the city for them nurturing over 150 musea. In the past, I enjoy writing code for web development but you spend

your day in an inside cubicle and I hate it. So, I return to the true sense of life, which is living with earth and embracing nature where Labor Day is irrelevant, to be just a simple gardener.”
