IRNEA SENDLER: In the name of their mothers
Filmmaker Mary Skinner spent seven years making “Irena Sendler: In the Name of Their Mothers.” The documentary tells the story of Polish social worker Irena Sendler, who was part of a clandestine network of social workers and nuns. Working together to outwit the Nazis,
they were able to save 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto and almost certain death at Treblinka. Skinner recorded over 70 hours of interviews with Sendler and other eyewitnesses to history, including people who were active in the Polish Resistance.

THORNE ROOMS: Tiny Grandeur
In the basement of the Art Institute of Chicago are 68 houses, none bigger than a shoebox. All are scale replicas of home interiors, from the Middle Ages to the Art Deco era: a Jacobean bedroom, a Shaker living room, a Biedermeier sitting room. Thorne Rooms curator Lindsay Morgan gives us a tour of this American art in miniature and explains why it has remained one of AIC’s most popular features.
LINDSAY MICAN MORGAN
Richard Nickel is an urban legend, of sorts. The photographer and preservationist is remembered for his brave and lonely 20-year crusade to protect Chicago’s architectural heritage from the wrecking ball. Richard Cahan and Michael Williams bring Nickel’s remarkable personal story to life through compelling photographs that highlight the structural and decorative details of the buildings he loved.
