samlinger.
Nikita Krushchev i 1964.
hen p Det Kongelige Teater. Gennem rene fik hun blandt andet opbygget den her udbudte fine
pryde adskillige europiske kongehuse.
Welcome to the autumn international auction of fine art and antiques in 2009
Among the golden age gems we find Constantin Hansens charming 1864 portrait of the sisters
Bertha Marie Weis and Angela Jacobe Weis daughters of ministerial undersecretary Carl Mettus
Weis. This painting has never been presented at an auction before. It is a fine example of the artists
special ability to portray children. In an altogether different vein, we find an entirely unique
allegory of summer in the form of a portrait with fruits and vegetables. It was painted in the 17th
century by an artist from the circle associated with the Italian painter Giuseppe Arcimboldo, and
most likely it belongs to a series of four season paintings of which the remaining three are located
in Italian collections.
As far as Russian art and antiques are concerned, many items are characterised by remarkable
provenances, e.g. Martiros Sergeevich Saryans colourful flower and fruit arrangement from 1951.
According to the actress Helle Virkner, the Soviet Prime Minister and First Secretary of the Commu-
nist party, Nikita Krushchev, gave this painting to her and her husband, the Danish Prime Minister
Jens Otto Krag in 1964. The auction also includes Empress Maria Alexandrovnas silver vase from
1871 a present from the city of Kursk.
Porcelain enthusiasts are advised to pay close attention when Ulla Gregaards private collection is
offered for sale. She was married to Peer Gregaard, theatre manager first at Det Ny Teater and later
at Det Kongelige Teater. Through the years she managed to establish this fine collection of predomi-
nantly Danish 18th century porcelain.
One of the absolute highlights of the auction is a profusely inlaid Louis XVI bureau from the late
18th century by German cabinet-maker David Roentgen whose furniture adorned royal residences
all over Europe. A set of consoles and mirrors from the same period and made by the Danish sculptor
Christopher Friderich Kppen also merits attention. Singular provenances are also to be found in the
furniture section featuring an enormous crystal drop chandelier more than two metres tall, formerly
a part of the interior of the honorary residence at Carlsberg where physicist and Nobel Prize winner
Niels Bohr lived for 30 years.
Four fabulous tiaras from Amalienborg Castle have turned up in Bredgade. These hair jewels
were designed by the Danish jewellery artists Josephine Bergse, Marlene Juhl-Jrgensen, Diana
Holstein and Maya Bjrnsten for the tiara exhibition at Amalienborg Castle earlier this year. Another
distinctive lot consists of a platinum diamond ring with a padparadscha sapphire a precious stone
that is named after the lotus flower and considered to be one of the worlds rarest gems.

"Pigen, der fletter sit hr". The model catrine Nielsen, called Trine, is plaiting her hair. Signed and dated A. Smith 1839. Oil on canvas. 74 x 60 cm.
Exhibited: Bruun Rasmussen Kunstauktioner, "Krop og Kunst, Golden Days in Copenhagen", September 2009.
The exhibition catalogue: "Den ngne guldalder", Den Hirschsprungske Samling, 1994, mentions C. W. Eckersberg's art school for painting the nude. C. W. Eckersberg started a special summer school in August-September 1839 at the Charlottenborg Academy. Cathrine Nielsen, called Trine, sat as a model for 75 hours. Eckersberg writes in his diary about the painting ses-sions week after week during the summer. The 1th of August: "Seet i Akademiet et par unge Piger, som ville vre Modeller". (Seen in the Academy young girls who want to be a model). The 5th of August: "I Skolen begyndtes et Billede af en quindelig Modell". (We started to paint a female model). Many working days followed.

The 31th of August: "Paa Malerskolen, hvor den quin-delige Modell var sidste Gang". (The last day for the female model in the painting school). C. W. Eckersberg himself painted Trine in a position similar to this one, the model was placed near a source of light (a window). His painting was bought by Super-intendent Borch.Eckersberg writes in his diary on the 29th of Septem-ber: "Tilsendt Forstander Borch det lille Maleri, en ung Pige som fletter sit Haar". (Sent a small painting of a girl plaiting her hair to Mr. Borch). This painting is today owned by Muse du Louvre. Reproduced in the exhibition catalogue: "Den ngne guldalder" p. 109. Unfortunately, Eckersberg does not mention the names of the other summer school participants of 1839 in his diary. Today we know that another Eckersberg pupil painted Trine, almost en face. The work was reproduced in the exhibition catalogue: "Den ngne guldalder" p. 111, and sold at ABR auction 663, 1999 no. 322 for 100.000 kr. L. A. Smith also took part in the session, presum-ably standing quite close to master Eckersberg himself, although Trine is seen a bit more en face in L. A. Smith's version. Kryer Skagen 92. Oil on canvas. 61 x 43 cm.H. Chr. Christensen, A Catalogue Raisonn of the Works of P. S. Kryer no. 503. Numbers 502 to 509 in the Catalogue Raisonn are all studies for no. 510: "Badende Drenge" (Boys bathing). Exhibited: Kunstforeningen, "P. S. Kryer 1851-1909", 1910 no. 219. Literature: Alba Schwartz, "Skagen", 1912 and 1913, p. 214.Provenance: L. Zeuthen, Lawyer. In the summers 1891-1893, Kryer rented a former post office and inn in the North Jutland town of Skagen. There he could enjoy the festive gatherings of the artistic colony and take advantage of the many op-portunities for plein-air painting. It was at this point that he began to experiment with the colour range of blue, which dominated many of his atmospheric pictures in the 1890s. Among the well-known works from this period, with predominating range of blues, are, "Badende Drenge en Sommeraften ved Skagen Strand" (Boys Bathing on a Summer Evening at Skagen Beach) 1892; the large double- portrait "Sommeraften ved Skagen Strand. Kunstneren og hans hustru", 1899 (The Hirschsprung Collection, Copenhagen); and lastly "Sommeraften p Skagen Snder-strand" (Summer Evening at Skagen Beach), 1893 (The Skagen Museum), with the two white-clad artist's wives, Marie Kryer and Anna Ancher. Kryer's paintings of children bathing can be seen in the context of the widespread interest in Vitalism which developed in the 1890s. Vitalism was a broad European current of ideas which cultivated the beautiful, the vigorous, the nude body, health, strength, the masculine hero, the emancipated woman, light and Nature in all its glory. Besides captivat-ing interest of painters such as Kryer and Willumsen, Vitalism was also adopted and interpreted by a number of the period's sculptors, archi-tects, composers and writers. The painting being auctioned here is a bril-liant example of both Vitalism and Kryer's use of the blue colour scale.

When his sister married Vilhelm Hammershi in 1891, Ilsted became better acquain-ted with Hammershi's paintings and was inspired by both Hammershi's art and his sense of quiet interiors. The atmosphere in the interiors by Ilsted is largely created by the play of sunlight on the walls and furniture. Room. On the right against the yellowish-white back wall, a yellow bureau on tall legs. Above the bureau, a square mirror in a mahogany frame. On the right, a white door with brass furniture. In the foreground left of centre, a young woman dressed in black with her back turned against the beholder. 1893. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 40 x 37 cm.Sophus Michalis and Alfred Bramsen, A Catalogue Raisonn of the Works of Vilhelm Hammershi no. 135. Yet (cb. the text above) described partly reverse. Exhibited: De Frie Studieskoler (Independent Study Schools) at Char-lottenborg, Copenhagen, 1896. A photo of the painting hanging in that exhibition can be seen in the exhibition catalogue from the Royal Academy of Arts, 2008, p. 163. Kunstforeningen, "Arbejder af Vilhelm Hammershi", 1916 no. 111. Provenance: Bought by Kunstforeningen in 1894. Later in the collection of Alfred Bramsen, the painter's dear friend and patron. In an interview given to the magazine "Hjemmet" (Home) in 1909, Hammershi states: "If people would only recognize that a few good pieces of furniture in a room give a far more beautiful and fine look than do many mediocre things", and further: "If you could just get rid of all the 'rubbish', what an improvement it would be for the look of the homes!". (Paul Vad, "Hammershi", 1988, p. 402-403). This 'matter of fact' statement does not, at first, reveal any deep metaphysical reflections concerning the interior decoration of Hammershi's home. However, the 'naked' lack of ostentation is an essential component in the fascination that Hammershi's art arouses. In a Hammershi, it is as if time has stopped and the moment is in a trancelike state. Hammershi has been famous internationally for a long time. More recently, the globetrotting British comedian and actor Michael Palin can be found searching for the key to Hammershi's art in the 2005 BBC documentary, "Michael Palin and the Mystery of Hammershi". Along with so many others Palin is fascinated with the mysterious silence in Hammershi's paintings. In 2008, The Royal Academy of Arts, London and The National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo, exhibited more than 70 paintings by Hammershi.

Rich family members wanted to help the poorer members of the family. Servants were sent dressed up as kings, boys with a star, street performers and jesters, so that they were not to be recognized. It was such a popular custom that also prostitutes, pickpockets and beggars joined the party, until finally these gatherings were forbidden. 118 Ivan Constantinovich Aivazovskyb. Teodosia, crimea 1817, d. s.p. 1900
"The deluge". Study for the painting at The Russian State Museum in St. Petersburg. Signed and dated Aivazovsky 1864 (in cyrillic). Oil on paper mounted on canvas. 27 x 38 cm.Provenance: From a Swedish collector. Bought in Mos-cow 1916-1917. Ivan Constantinovich Aivazovsky was famous in his day and has remained famous ever since, mainly be-cause of his eminent ability to depict the sea in all its often awe-inspiring manifestations. Ships engulfed by greedy waves and castaways clinging to driftwood, hoping to be rescued from a fate waiting in the deep. What we see here is a romanticism, in which human frailty is shown in contrast to the colossal forces of nature. Artistically, Aivazovsky is akin to the English
118
painter William Turner (1775-1851) whom he met at the beginning of his career. Turner was so carried away by Aivazovsky's art that he wrote a poem in praise of this young painter in 1842. Another kindred spirit can be found in the world of literature where the American author Edgar Allen Poe (1809-1849), like Aivazovsky, has Man perish in abysmal maelstroms in god-forsa-ken places. The present motif is a preliminary study for the masterpiece "The Deluge", painted in 1864 (246 x 319 cm.), today located at The Russian State Museum in St. Petersburg and formerly a part of the Impe-rial collection. Biblical scenes are rare in Aivazovsky's work, but the motif of "The Deluge" could hardly find a more dramatic expression than in this artist's rendition of the all-consuming flood.

"Where the desert was". Still life with several flowers and fruits. Signed and dated M. Saryan 1951. Oil on canvas. 81 x 100 cm.Provenance: Denmark's late Prime Minister Jens Otto Krag and his wife, actress Helle Virkner. Ac-cording to her information, the couple received the painting as a present from Nikita Khrusjtjov, First Secretary of the Communist Party of the So-viet Union, when he visited Denmark in 1964. The title of the painting "Where the desert was", re-fers to the postwar revival times, where Soviet repu-blics came out of destruction and developed new fer-tile lands. This metaphor points to reclaim deserts as part of the process of creating the socialistic Garden of Eden on Soviet soil.
