The Greek Crisis and the elections of 20125:30pm Tuesday 12 th June, Seminar Room A On 17 June 2012, Greece will face its most important general election of the lastdecades. Elections in this small country have acquired an unexpected world-widesignificance that is very rare in comparable situations. As it happens, some analystspredict that the whole future of the European idea depends on the outcome of this

vote. The previous, inconclusive polls of May 2012 demonstrated that predictions of increasing political instability which might eventually derail the Greek bail-out process

    were unfortunately all too correct.

Since 2010, Hughes Hall has hosted a series of annual public lectures, reviewing theevolution of the Eurozone sovereign debt crisis. Demetrius Floudas, revisits thetopic, which has been at the top of the agenda of political and economic analysts in

deeper analysis of a number of issues, based on analytical prediction models as well asthe speaker's own experience from his observations of the political undercurrents inGreece.

How likely is it that Greece will default? What will really happen if it does? How will a Greek collapse affect the UK, Europe and the rest of the world? Why did Greek voters reject the European bail-out in May 2012? What are the predictions for the June 2012 Greek polls? Is instability/riots/civil war a possible danger for the country? What are the myths propagated on the European sovereign debt crisis and where can we find explanations closer to the truth? What are the scenarios for the 'day after'?

Rio+20 Earth Summit: a series of short talks (& a chance to ask JulianHuppert questions!)

Where? Riley Auditorium, Clare College When? Friday 15 June, 2.30-4.30pm (after exams, not even during May Week, sothere's basically no excuse not to come!)Facebook page:https://www.facebook.com/events/346436018763433/ (please click attending if youplan to come)Price: FREE

Strange as it may seem, May Week is happening at the same time as the Rio+20 EarthSummit - 'one of the largest and most important gatherings in the history of the UN,'according to Ban Ki-Moon.

If you're interested in any of these:- Oceans - Water - Food - Disasters - Cities - Energy - Jobs ......then good news - they're the 7 'critical issues' highlighted by the Summit, and

Energise Cambridge and the Cambridge Hub are organising a series of short (10-15min) talks by experts from Cambridge, covering a range of those topics. That'll befollowed by a quick talk by Julian Huppert, who will have met Nick Clegg just 2 daysbefore this, about the Rio Summit, and a chance to ask questions.

Out of the first Earth Summit in 1992 came the UN conventions on both ClimateChange and Biodiversity. That was around the time that many of us now studying inCambridge were born, and it's odd to think that we're now old enough to engage inthe global issues that will shape our futures. After the talks, there'll be time fordiscussion, and refreshments outside afterwards if the weather's good!

Speakers confirmed so far include Prof. Andrew Balmford, head of ConservationScience, talking about food security and sustainable agriculture can be reconciled withthe conservation of biodiversity, Dr. David Reiner, who has advised government, industry and NGOs on energy and environmental policy and will be talking aboutenergy and climate change, Dr. Andrew Coburn, who been involved in developing several disaster mitigation plans in a wide range of countries, will be talking aboutdisaster preparedness (again subject to confirmation). Other speakers will beannounced nearer the time.

NUCLEAR POWER: CLEAR OR UNCLEAR?Sustainability, policy and prospects Tuesday, 26-06-2012Faculty of Law, University of Cambridge

Nuclear power is playing an ever more fundamental role in energy strategies, providing about 15% of the world's electricity. In addition to the on-going debateabout the sustainability of nuclear energy, nuclear power has come under thespotlight following last year's accident at the Fukushima-Daiichi Nuclear Plant andGermany's decision to shut down all its nuclear reactors by 2022. After these events, experts, as well as common people, are eager to discover the truth about thesustainability of nuclear energy from an objective perspective. The goal of the CUEN2012 annual conference is to deliver this perspective to its audience.
