RECOHHENDATIONS:
DECLASSIFIED
• CCTA:jcs Al2 Ser: 1 May 1.9.53
1. It is recommended that this unJ."t; oe furru.sned a "SEARCHLIGHT", 24", Model 1942 with qualified personnel designated as operators.
MISSION
1. Primal'ily illuminate night close air support targets with a "Pencil beam light".
2. Battlefield illumination
CONCEPT
1. The experiment of' using search lights in coordination with night close air support strikes has proven very effective. At the same time it has posed problema as to how the lights should be controlled, at what echelon their supplies should be drawn, and the procurement of trained persorwel to form s$arch light erews.
2. The Be_ttalion Commnnder feels that the problem cnn be solved by consolidating the light and crew with the battalion WEAPONS Co. This would place the search light and a trained crew in it's rightful role as a support weapon in addition to other supporting weapons ot the battalion.
3. The employment of this light in ottensive and defensive roles would be as directed by the Battalion Oommender, and coordinated through the supporting arms center.
4. Specifically, when the search light is in position, land lines would be run into the artillery switchboard in the SAC bunker, and one member of the crew at the light would monitor VHF frequencies on a HAiv radio. This gives the search light crew the necessary communicaltions to receive instructions not· o11ly from SAC, but also from an airborne controller. In addition to the lines into the SAC bunker, there should be lateral land lines oo!"..neoting all l:!.g..hts along the front. ·
.5. Two battalions situated on a regimental front using the above listed system could coordinate their search lights to cross the most advantageous targets from either SAC b~er, or two adjacent battalions situated in two different regimental .sectors could coordinate their lights on targets to their M~tual advantage.

6. The search light with the reserve battalion could be utilized as a spare, while the battalion is in reserve:. It is tel t that two search lights along a normal regimental tront, properly placed could cover necessary targets, with due consideration tor peou!iar terrain £eatures. ·
1. 1-lith the advent of accelerated night operations it becOllles apparent that every available weapon-must become proficient on a 24 hour basis.
' 2. The use of "Pencil beam" search lights has enabled aircraft to conduct night close air support missions with gre~ter aoouraoy than that obtained with the present MPQ gear. Night close air support being in an embryo stage requires 1mprovment and perfecting •. To assist in this mission a well organized seal'ch light component is mandatory. A search light properly placed in a battalion sector is advantageous in that it oan, on call, illuminate and change darkness into a daylight battle field.
3. It is the Battalion Commanders opinion that, by placing the search light and crew in the WEAPONS Co. the problems of supply, maintenance, personnel training and relief can be taken care of as easily as the needs ot other tYPe weapons presently in WEAPONS Co. It is also noted that this places the control of the light at the echelon at which the light is to be used, eliminating the time' consumed by havi?g to go to a higher echelon for authorization.
REC01·1I·illNDATIOUS
1. Each Ri:f'le Battalion of the let Marine Division be authorized one (1) Search light, 24", Model 1942, with accessories.
2. The ~resent weapons company TO and TE be moditie.d to include a five (5} man search light crew, and ~he above listed search light with accessor-y equipment. ·
