THE SHOOT FROM JESSE (11)

The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him. The spirit of wisdom and understanding The spirit of counsel and might

The spirit of knowledge and fear of the Lord

His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord (11:2–3)

Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give your daughters and sons new birth, cleanse them from sin, and raise them to eternal life. Laying both hands on the head of each of the newly baptized, the minister prays for each: Sustain name with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Amen.

THE SHOOT FROM JESSE (11)

He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his loins.

As you bring your children to receive the gift of baptism, you are entrusted with responsibilities: to live with them among God's faithful people,

bring them to the word of God and the holy

supper, teach them the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and

the Ten Commandments,

place in their hands the holy scriptures,

and nurture them in faith and prayer, so that your children may learn to trust God,

proclaim Christ through word and deed,

care for others and the world God made,

and work for justice and peace. Do you promise to help your children grow in the Christian faith and life? Response: I do.
