The President’s Report
The year 2015 - 2016 will be a time when our association looks to both the past & the future.
Commemoration of historic moments in Australia’s military history commenced with the largest ever number of association members stepping out under our banner at this year’s Sydney Anzac Day March. It was particularly pleasing to see so many attend an event which marked the centenary of one of the most significant events in Australia’s history. It was also significant that, for the first time in 40 years, a banner commemorating 3rd Division AIF artillery paraded beside that of our association.
2
In keeping with the commemorative theme, our annual reunion will feature as guest speaker Colonel Graham Fleeton whose topic will be the July 19-20 1916 battle of Fromelles. Colonel Fleeton is very well versed in the history of Australia’s involvement in WW1, with his speech promising to give insights into a battle in which more Australians were killed in one day than in any other engagement in the nation’s history. The reunion will be held at Chatswood RSL on Friday, 13 November.
With commemoration again the concept, a gala dinner will be held on March 19 next year to mark the centenary of the raising of the 7th. Australian Field Artillery Brigade, the antecedent unit to our old regiment and now to 7 Light Bty. A subcommittee has planning well in hand with details being advised closer to the date.
Remembrance and commemoration of relevant events is important to any organisation for it gives substance and meaning to the place it occupies in time and space.
However, if an organisation ceases to exist there can be no commemoration of anything - consequently your committee will over the next few months discuss projects aimed at ensuring our association continues on far into this century.
Proposals up for consideration include changes aimed at seeing our website update news and images as quickly as circumstances allow. The setting up of an association Facebook page will also be discussed. If agreed to, the page will be designed as a “closed page”, accessible only to association members and invited guests and will provide a forum for comments, suggestions and queries. Anything except the unacceptable will be more than welcome.
Changes to technology are vitally important if the association is to keep up with the world as it is today but recruiting new members is the primary way, the only way, to keep our association alive. Your committee intends to move in that direction as a matter of priority.
It is proposed that direct approaches be made to members of 7 Light Battery and more general approaches made to former members of the Regiment. I would particularly ask our younger members to become more active in association affairs and use their best efforts to recruit as
many of their comrades as possible. Our association is not an association of people of a particular age or of those who served at a particular time - it is for all those eligible to join, for all those who wish to join. An updated online application form should be available soon. Until then all applications may be addressed to the secretary, John Balfour at PO Box 206 Frenchs Forest 2086.
We are the members of an association of Australian ex-service personnel and carry with us the duty to look out for each other. With that in mind, Chris Bowen (ex. Sgt. 26 Bty) has assumed the role of welfare officer, taking over from Barney Flanagan who filled the position for many years. If anyone happens not to feel OK and needs to have a yarn about anything, Chris is the man to contact. He is available on (02) 9487 6931 or (mb) 0411 014 676. Barney is now Chris’ back up and is contactable on 9419 8285 or 0408 424 978.
I will close with three personal observations and comments.
First, I sincerely believe that last year’s committee, headed by Steve Flower, was one of the most effective I have ever served on. People worked well together, got along well on a personal basis, put ideas into effect, got things done and done on time. A great job all round by Steve and his detachment. I must also give mention to John Balfour OAM. His work as association secretary is the glue that holds the whole structure together.
Second, I am honoured to be Association President for this year. It was not a position I sought, gaining it mostly by default, and, for a variety of reasons, I do not intend to seek re-election next year. That said, I am aware of the responsibilities that come with the job and will do my best to fulfil them. Third and finally, if any member wishes to talk about association matters I am more than willing to listen. My phone number is (02) 9457 9146 or email me at [email protected].
Jim Nash, President.

EX-PRESIDENT’S REPORT
As you are all now aware, my tenure as President of the 7 FD REGT RAA Association has come to an end after serving three years in that role. It has been a challenging time, particularly with the transition of the Regiment to 7 Light Battery and the changing of the Association's constitution to include members of the Light Battery.
Thank you to all members of the committee for their work and dedication in running our Association. I
extend my congratulations to Jim Nash on his election as the new President and give him my full support in my new position of Vice President. Jim has been a long serving and hard working committee member for many years and he brings a new enthusiasm and fresh ideas to the role. I look forward to working with him over the coming year, particularly as the committee organises both the annual reunion, and the centenary of the 7 Field Artillery Brigade early next year.
Particular mention must be made once again to the tireless efforts of John Balfour as Secretary. John, your work is greatly appreciated by us all.
Thanks must also go to Barney Flanagan for his good humoured support as Patron over the last three years. I would like also to recognise the work of our honorary Auditor Bill Neill and Legal Officer LTCOL Graham Barter for the work they do behind the scenes.
As a final sign off, I would encourage you all to maintain the centenary momentum - we showed incredible support for the Centenary of ANZAC with a record turn out to honour those who fought and I would love to see a record turn out for the Centenary of our Regiment to honour those who served. Please save the date and I trust I will see many of you there.
Ubique.

FROM THE CO’s DESK
This year has proven to be a big year for 7 Lt Bty as it transitioned from the "Readying" phase of Army's Force Generation Cycle to "Ready" as of 1 July 2015. As the lead element of Battlegroup Waratah's Light Battery (which also comprises members of 23 Lt Bty), 7 Lt Bty has experienced the highest exercise tempo it has had in several years, matched with a corresponding increase in the readiness levels of personnel within the Lt Bty. Activities and events this year have included: Australia Day SaluteExercise Funnelweb Combat 15-1 (Feb - W/E: Singleton Range)Exercise Blue Diamond (Mar - 16-days: Gallipoli Barracks, Enoggera Queensland in spt of 7 Bde)Mortar Basic Operator Course (Mar - 9 days: Dee Why & Singleton Range)Exercise Polygon Wood 15-1 (Mar - 4 days: Singleton Range)Anzac Day Ceremonial Duties (Manly, Dee Why, Forestville, Gosford, Newcastle)Exercise Polygon Wood 15-2 (May - 9 days: Singleton Range)Queen's Birthday SaluteExercise Diamond Strike 15 (Jun - 16 days: Shoalwater Bay Training Area, Queensland in spt of 7 Bde) Exercise Funnelweb Marksman 15 (Aug - W/E: Singleton Range)
These have been on top of more routine activities of individual training, parade nights, support to operational deployments and unit admin. In addition, the Lt Bty will also be deploying later this year to the Jungle Training Centre in Canungra Queensland for 9 days on Exercise Funnelweb Combat 15-2. The contribution to Army's capability is real - Of the 57 positions to be filled in the Battlegroup Waratah Light Battery deploying on Exercise
Diamond Strike in support of the Regular Army's 7th Brigade, as well as undergoing certification and evaluation (ARTEP), 53 positions were filled - all by rank and trade qualified personnel, including AIRN compliance. During the exercise, the Lt Bty fired just under 900 rounds of 81mm ammunition - HE and Red Phosphorous (RP) - during evaluation and in support of Live Fire Combat Team Attacks being conducted by combined arms elements of Battlegroup Waratah. In addition, Joint Fires Teams from the Lt Bty coordinated the engagement of targets by 155mm Artillery from 1 Regt, who fired 800 rounds of HE in support of Battlegroup Waratah elements during their live fire attacks. One Joint Fires Observer (JFO) from the Lt Bty was also fortunate enough to work with a Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) deployed from the Airspace Coordination Element of HQ 7 Bde to direct live engagements by a pair of F/A-18F Super Hornets from the RAAF, including dropping Mk-83 and Mk-84 bombs (1000lb & 2000lb HE) and firing 20mm Prac during strafing runs. Together, the capability demonstrated in these activities by the Lt Bty comprises a remarkable achievement by any organisation - Regular or Reserve - and one that speaks to the dedication and commitment to service displayed by the Gunners in developing their skills and proficiencies to take their place in the Reinforcing Battlegroup during the "Ready" phase. The Lt Bty is, and continues to be, a credit to the Royal Australian Artillery and its proud heritage.

LIGHT ARTILLERY IN 2 DIV 2015 AN UPDATE
This has been a very busy period for the Gunners of 2nd Division. We have finalised the transition to the Light Artillery Concept with the Light Batterys (Lt Bty) under Command of ARes Infantry Battalions equipped with the 81 mm Mortar providing the Joint Fires capability to the ARes Battle Groups (BG). The Light Artillery concept has been tested and proved fit for purpose on three major exercises over the past 18 months. These exercises included Light Artillery Gunners from 7 Lt Bty providing Fire Support with their Mortars supported by their Joint Fire Teams coordinating Guns from the ARA RAA Regiments and F18 Fast Jets delivering 500lbs bombs. You will be pleased to know all rounds fell safely on target.

Gunners from 7 Lt Bty at Singleton
The Lt Btys in the Division are now paired to provide the Joint Fires effects as follows:
2/10 Lt Bty - 5/6 RVR (4 Bde) and 6/13 Lt Bty – 10/27 RSAR (9 Bde) form part of BG JACKA to reinforce 1 Bde and work with 8/12 Regt RAA
3 Lt Bty – 11/28 RWAR (13 Bde) and 5/11 Lt Bty – 25/49 RQR (11 Bde) form part of BG CANAAN to reinforce 3 Bde and work with 4 Regt RAA
7 Lt Bty – 2/17 RNSWR (8 Bde) and 23 Lt Bty – 4/3 RNSWR (5 Bde) form part of BG WARATAH to reinforce 7 Bde and work with 1 Regt RAA
The highlight for 3 and 5/11 Lt Btys who worked together with 4 Regt RAA was a deployment to Townsville on Exercise HAMEL 14. During this exercise the ARes BG including its Lt Bty performed to a very high standard to achieve its certification under the new PLAN BEERSHEBA concept. BG CANNAN was the first ARes BG to gain a ready for purpose certification.
As the Force Generation Cycle turned, the focus moved to BG WARATAH. The 5 and 8 Brigade BG formed mainly from 2/17 RNSWR, 7 and 23 Lt Btys which provided the Joint Fires Effect during all training activities, numerous CPXs and FTXs until it deployed to Shoalwater Bay in June 2015 where it successfully participated in EX DIAMOND STRIKE and has now been deemed Ready.
The 2nd Division is now focusing on the 4 and 9 Brigade BG, BG JACKA, which will be based on 5/6 RVR and its Lt Bty with Gunners from Victoria, SA and Tasmania. There is still a lot to learn and things we can always do better but we are starting to influence the Infantry and ensure the RAA is maintaining a high profile and even higher standards.

Finally, towards the end of this year the Mount Schanck Challenge Trophy will be awarded to the best Lt Bty in the Division. It has not been awarded for the last ten years with the last Field Battery to win being 7 Field Battery from WA. As part of the reinstating of the award, Batterys can compete individually for
7
assessment or agree to be assessed as part of the Force Readying Cycle, thus sharing the award if winning.
The winning Battery will be announced during this year’s RAA CPX at the School of Artillery in November and will hold the Mt Schanck Shield until the results of the next competition are promulgated.

ROYAL AUSTRALIAN ARTILLERY HISTORICAL COMPANY 18 POUNDER GUN PROJECTA project involving the restoration of an 18 Pounder gun and the training and kitting out of a horse team and gun detachments has seen fruition with its appearance at the Anzac Day Parade at the Australian War Memorial this year.
Anzac Day Parade, Australian War Memorial
The Quick Firing (QF) 18 Pounder has a calibre of 84 mm and the ammunition combined with the cartridge weighed 18 pounds, hence 18 Pounder. Australia began using the gun in 1906 and it saw service at Gallipoli and on the Western Front during World War One. Its main function was to lay down a screen of fire to protect infantry soldiers as they advanced, especially against enemy machine gunners.
The 18 Pounder was restored at North Head by a team led by carriage-maker Jim Frecklington. The Sydney Harbour Federation Trust provided facilities for the restoration.
While the gun and limber were being restored a team of ex-harness horses were being trained in Goulburn with Max Pearce and Gerard Hogan who also took the responsibility of sourcing the harness. A combination of original leatherwork and replica pieces were used. Six horses are used to tow the gun and limber with a driver allocated to each two-horse team, riding the left horse of each pair.
Logistics for transporting the gun, limber and horses also had to be considered. Dean Trailers in Bowral built a purpose-designed trailer; the canopy was constructed by A1 Marine and Auto Trim in Mittagong and sign writing was completed by Bowral Signs.
The Team was officially welcomed to Canberra by the Governor-General, Sir Peter Cosgrove at the Canberra Airport, Fairbairn on 15th April 2015. The airport has provided ongoing support by providing a display space in the departure hall for the gun and limber. The horses are agisted close-by.
The team will be seen at various commemorative functions up until 1918.

EXERCISE DIAMOND STRIKE
In June 2015, 7 Light Bty participated in EX DIAMOND STRIKE at Shoalwater Bay as part of the 600 strong Battlegroup Waratah (BGW) made up of personnel from 8 and 5 Brigades. This exercise was the culmination of a period of highly intensive lead up training to certify BGW as being operationally ready to be the reinforcing BG as part of the ARA's 7 Brigade.
The exercise consisted of live fire offensive and defensive activities in an all arms environment and enabled the gunners to fire numerous high explosive 81mm rounds - so many rounds in fact that at one point the mortars were beng loaded from the prone position - so far had the base plate sunk into the soft ground! The fires were co-ordinated by 7 Lt Bty's FO parties and included 155mm medium guns and even an FA-18 air strike, something that few reserves will ever experience live.
Over the 2 weeks that the Bty were deployed, numerous testing was conducted, and by the end 7 Lt Bty was certified ready. The result of this certification is validation for the future of reserve artillery as light gunners and as BGW moves into the Ready phase of the training cycle, many deployment and operational opportunities may open up for those gunners who formed part of the BG.
Most soldiers who attended reported the exercise as challenging - boring at times (as is the nature of large activities with many moving parts - to say nothing of the travel), followed by periods of high intensity but all in all an amazing experience.
The gunners can now look forward to a period of lower tempo, while looking forward to doing it all again in 2018.
