turn at trying to rescue a 2-month-old pup from the bottom of a
drywater well.Ideas by the dozen were offeredby newspaper readers
and radiolisteners.It an began nine days ago when5-year-old Teresa
Curtis pushedtwo pups into a hole in her backyard. It'sabout 10
inches wide atthe top and 38 fee t deep.Her cousins, Dan Hardin,
15, andPoe Hardin, 12, rescued one ofthe pups. They lowered a
burlapsack and the pup walked into it.But the other little mongrel
shiedoff.The Hardin boys have been keep-ing the trapped pup alive
by low-ering bowls of milk and cereal.Yesterday a couple of Boy
Scouts
v tried unsuccessfully to drop a ropeloop over the pup and haul
him tosafety.New Mexico newspaper and wireservice offices were
beseiged with
suggestions for rescue. One of the'plans came from a woman
whosaid:*Send the other puppy down ina basket. The trapped puppy
may jbe so glad to see him he'll climbin the basket too."A
fisherman: "Drop a piece ofnet the size of the bottom of thehole to
the bottom with ropes tiedto the four corners. When hereaches for
the piece of meat inthe center, jerk him out like acatfish."One man
asked, "Why all thefuss?kick the hole in on top ofhim.'Another
offered, "Fill the wel l ;to a depth of two or three f e e t!with
corks. Do it slowly so thepup can crawl on top. Then fillthe well
.with water so hell floatto the top."Lower a little boy in a
stoutpair of coveralls on a rope,' sug-gested a woman, "and et
himbring the puppy back."An elderly lady suggested build-ing a
lattice work ladder and let-ting the pup climb out.
