Rome invaded and conquered Israel

Jews grew tired of foreign rule

Wanted to re-create the Kingdom of Israel.

A group that refused to obey anyone but God were Zealots (a rebellious group)

Zealots urged fellow Jews to rise against the Romans

The Jews revolted – led by the Zealots

Revolt was unsuccessful - lasted for 4 years

Romans burned the Second Temple

Jews lost their will to fight

A group of 1,000 Zealots locked themselves in a mountain fortress – Masada

very difficult to reachZealots refused to surrenderFor 2 years, Roman soldiers built ramps to reach this fortress

When the Romans broke through, the Zealots took their own lives.

Some Jews were taken to Roman as slaves

Since the Jews no longer had a single temple to worship, synagogues became more important.

Rabbis (religious teachers) increased Over time, Jews began moving

throughout the world. In most cases, Jews were forced out

by other religious groups.They settled in Asia, Russia, and

later the United States.
