Information Affairs Minister, Ali bin Mohammed Al-Rumaihi

yesterday lauded the patriotic role played by the Bahraini media in defending national and Arab issues, professionally and objectively.

The minister also voiced deep pride in the Qatari citizens, being the cornerstones of the social system of the peoples of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

Meeting the representatives from the Bahraini Press and media, including editors-in-chief of local newspapers and columnists, Al-Rumaihi extended sincere thanks to journalists and media professionals in Bahrain, stressing that they have set the example in loyalty, national belonging and patriotism thanks to their unwavering keenness on national, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Arab unity.

“What the national press and media outlets are doing is exactly the patriotic role that they are

expected to play in responding to allegations, fallacies and fabricated reports disseminated by biased and tendentious media against the Kingdom of Bahrain,” he said.

“The reports and coverage by the national media in Bahrain are not directed in any way against the brothers in the State of Qatar, but against Qatar’s terrorism-supporting policies and in response to the false accusations made by its media, particularly Al-Jazeera channel.”

The Bahraini media are also exposing Qatar’s media policy which has, for years, strove to distort facts in the Kingdom of Bahrain by disseminating false and baseless accusations under shiny, misleading and inaccurate pretexts, such as freedom of expression and opinion and inclusive opinions, he added.

The minister affirmed the pride of Bahrain –leaders, government and people- in the Qatari people who represents a cornerstone in

the social system of GCC peoples, and even the Arab people to which everyone is proud to belong.

He asserted that the “poisonous” pens in the Qatari media have been trying to exploit the current crisis to drive wedges between GCC peoples, and try to show that what is happening is directed against the Qatari people, without paying heed to the keenness of the leadership on the security, stability and interests of the brotherly Qatari people, as clearly reflected in the royal order to ensure easy procedures for joint families and to take humanitarian cases into consideration.

Al-Rumaihi re-affirmed the national fundamentals on which Bahrain’s cultural and humanitarian message is based, which has turned the kingdom, throughout history, into a beacon of freedom, tolerance, peaceful and mutual acceptance.

He stressed that Bahrain, while proud of its GCC and Arab dimensions, contributes effectively to the global humanitarian message.

The Independent Ombudsman for the National Security Agency

(NSA) yesterday met the husband of Ebtisam Al Saegh as part of an ongoing investigation into the allegations of mistreatment and sexual assault doing rounds on social media channels.

Reports circulating on various social media channels also raised concerns regarding the condition of Bahraini national Ebtisam Al-Saegh, who is under trial in a terror case.

Responding to the reports, the husband of Ebtisam Al Saegh said that he had been very upset with the allegations that his wife had been raped, something she had not mentioned to him at any point.

The NSA Ombudsman said that

such allegations, if founded, will result in strict adherence to the law and guidelines governing professional behaviour.

The case was opened proactively by the NSA Ombudsman to investigate claims of violations. As part of the investigation, NSA has dispatched investigators and commenced interviews with relevant parties. The investigators also gathered and reviewed documents and material such as arrest records, statements, and CCTV footage from the point of arrest.

Separately, National Security Agency (NSA) Inspector-General Mohammed Rashid Abdullah Al Rumaihi held discussions with the husband of Ebtisam Al Saegh to find out the truth behind such reports,

although no official complaint has been filed in this regard. Council of Representatives First Deputy Speaker Ali Al Aradi and Member Khalid Al Shaer attended the meeting.

Al Rumaihi stressed that while NSA has the right to take legal action against those behind any baseless allegation, the Public Prosecution is the investigating body and people with evidence should submit it to it, instead of posting allegations on websites and on social media, which is in itself a crime punishable under Article 364 and 365 of the Penal Code that stipulates a jail term and a fine.

Ebtisam Al-Saegh’s husband appreciated the NSA’s initiative and resolve to probe all complaints and praised the Inspector-General for his assurance to protect rights.

Protests by the ex-employees of a construction company over unpaid wages took a more intense

turn yesterday with the workers now claiming that the company has misled the ministry by making false claims, including that on payment assurances.

According to the protesting workers, the company owners did so to get rid of the travel placed on them by the court for failing to clear the dues it owes to suppliers.

“He is trying to get the travel ban removed,” a protesting worker  told DT News adding: “If the ban is lifted he might leave and will not return to the Kingdom.”

The company owners, according to the workers, assured the Ministry of Labour and Social Development that they had paid salaries to majority of their employees and rest of them were given assurances.

However, one of the protesting workers, on condition of anonymity, told DT News that they were given “no such assurances.”

The company has paid salaries to 35 of their Bahraini employees and given assurances to some of the expatriates staff members, “but most of us didn’t receive any thing,”claimed the protesting workers.

“In fact, they even refused to speak to us,” a protesting worker said adding: “Every attempt to communicate with them failed.”

The workers also told DT News that they were even refused entry to the company premises when tried reaching the officials for clarifications.

“So it is quite astonishing that they even make such claims,” an ex-employee said

“We are looking for a clear response on our payments.”“We understand the financial difficulties they are

in, but we need at least to be informed about their intentions,” the protesting workers said.

McDonalds says it will start globally rolling back use

of antibiotics in its chicken products from 2018 as part of efforts to curb microbial resistance to drugs and the rise of superbugs.

The decision follows a similar move undertaken in the US market in 2016.

It applies to drugs that are also used in human medicine, called Highest Priority Critically Important Antimicrobials (HPCIA) by the World Health Organization (WHO). “Starting in 2018, we will begin implementing a

new broiler chicken antibiotics policy in markets around the world,” the company said in a statement issued Wednesday.

By 2018, HPCIAs will be eliminated in broiler chicken for the Brazil, Canada, Japan, South Korea, the US, and Europe. An exception will be made for the antibiotic colistin

for Europe only. The policy will be extended

for Australia and Russia by the end of 2019, when the colistin exception for Europe will be made phased out.

It will be fully implemented globally by January 2027, although the firm said: “Our goal is to have this policy

implemented before this date.”Scientists have for decades

argued there is a link between antibiotic use in animals and the dwindling effectiveness of these drugs in human medicine.

Industrial-scale poultry farmers often use antibiotics not to treat outbreaks of disease in their flocks but to prevent it from occurring.

Some also use the drugs to help birds gain weight more quickly. Certain antibiotics destroy bacteria in the gut, which means that the chicken can convert feed to muscle faster.

Scientists have for decades argued there is a link between antibiotic use

in animals and the dwindling effective-ness of these drugs in human medicine.

1.4m pilgrims arrivein Saudi before hajjRiyadh

More than 1.4 million Muslims have so far

arrived in Saudi Arabia for the hajj, authorities said Thursday, with the annual pilgrimage marked by the return of Iranians after Tehran’s boycott last year.

More than two million people are expected to participate in this year’s hajj, a pillar of Islam that capable Muslims must perform at least once in their lives, which starts next week.

“So far 1,313,946 pilgrims have arrived by air, 79,501 by land, and 12,477 by sea -- an increase of 33 percent

compared with the same period last year,” the state-run Saudi Press Agency said, citing passport officials.

That includes more than 400 Qatari pilgrims, local media reported. All Qatari pilgrims arrived through the Salwa border crossing with Qatar.

The  ministry added it was equipped to handle the additional crowds after the completion of expansion works at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the most revered site in Islam.

More than 1.8 million faithful took part in last year’s hajj.

Samsung unveiled a new model of its Galaxy Note as it seeks to mount a renewed challenge to Apple and its soon-to-come iPhone 8. The “phablet” was revealed at an event in New York City, which left some analysts underwhelmed

by its lack of new features beyond a dual-lens camera for telephoto zoom -- already available on the iPhone7 Plus.

Apple is expected to unveil a 10th anniversary version of the iPhone in September. Nandan Nilekani back at Infosys

New Delhi

Infosys cofounder Nandan Nilekani will take over immediately as the

company’s nonexecutive chairman, the Indian software giant said yesterday, a move to calm investor unrest and steady the share price.

His return comes in the wake of chief executive Vishal Sikka’s surprise decision last Friday to quit amid tensions between the company’s board and its founders.

The turmoil saw shares plunge as much as 15 percent in the past week.

Nilekani, one of the cofounders of the company, ran the business from 2002 to 2007 and remains highly respected in the technology world.

He also led the implementation of a key government programme holding biometric data on over a billion people.

“Nandan is the ideal leader for Infosys at this stage in the company’s development. His appointment will allow Infosys to focus on the strategic changes it needs to make,” outgoing chairman R. Seshasayee said in a statement.

Co-chairman Ravi Venkatesan, as well as two board members have resigned as part of the restructuring, the company said.  Infosys veteran UB Pravin Rao remains interim chief executive.

Sikka had come under fire in recent months from some of the founders of the company on issues related to corporate governance and salary increases for its top executives.

“Over the last many months and quarters, we have all been besieged by false, baseless, malicious and increasingly personal attacks,” he said in his resignation.

Analysts said Nilekani’s return would help end “the risk of the distraction in the business” because of the internal conflict.

“It might even pave the way to attract a good CEO going forward,” said a Mumbai analyst who is not authorised to speak to the media.

Last month Infosys reported an increase of 1.4 percent in consolidated net profit year-on-year for the first quarter, marginally beating analysts’ expectations.

India became a back office to the world in the early 2000s as companies subcontracted work to firms such as Infosys, taking advantage of the country’s skilled English-speaking workforce.

The $150-billion IT sector remains one of the country’s flagship industries, but it is facing upheaval in the face of automation and US President Donald Trump’s clampdown on visas.(AFP)

July US existing home sales lowest of 2017Washington

US existing homes sales fell in July for the second straight month

as high prices and tight supply kept would-be homeowners from signing on the dotted line, industry figures showed Thursday.

The National Association of Realtors said prices continued to rise faster than incomes in much of the United States, with most homes selling in less than a month.

The drop in sales came the same week Commerce Department figures showed sales of new single-family homes also fell in July amid rising prices.

“Realtors continue to say prospective buyers are frustrated by how quickly prices are rising for the minimal selection of homes that fit buyers’ budget and wish list,” Lawrence Yun, NAR’s chief economist, said in a statement.

Researchers in the United States and South Korea

have invented a new kind of yarn that can generate electricity when it is stretched or twisted, said a study yesterday.

The material, called “twistron,” could be used to harvest energy from the motion of ocean waves, or from changes in temperature, said the report in the journal Science.

“The easiest way to think of twistron harvesters is, you have a piece of yarn, you stretch

it, and out comes electricity,” said co-author Carter Haines, associate research professor at the University of Texas, Dallas.

The yarn is built from carbon nanotubes, which are hollow cylinders of carbon 10,000 times smaller in diameter than a human hair, according to the report.

In order to generate electricity, the yarns must be either submerged in or coated with an ionically conducting material, or electrolyte, which can be as simple as a mixture of ordinary table salt and water.

“When you insert the

carbon nanotube yarn into an electrolyte bath, the yarns are charged by the electrolyte itself,” said co-author Na Li, a

research scientist at UT Dallas’s NanoTech Institute.

“No external battery, or voltage, is needed.”

The research is still at an early stage, and scientists caution that the technology is not meant for large-scale electricity projects, at least not yet.

Instead, lab experiments have shown that “a twistron yarn weighing less than a housefly could power a small LED, which lit up each time the yarn was stretched,” said the report in Science.

Another experiment showed that when sewn into a shirt, the yarns served as a self-powered breathing monitor.

“There is a lot of interest in using waste energy to power

the Internet of Things, such as arrays of distributed sensors,” Li said.

“Twistron technology might be exploited for such applications where changing batteries is impractical.”

Other researchers involved with the project are affiliated with Hanyang University in South Korea.

The research was funded by the US Air Force, NASA, the Office of Naval Research, the Robert A. Welch Foundation, the Korea-US Air Force Cooperation Program and the Korean Ministry of Science.

A 53-year-old Massachusetts mother of two yesterday

came forward to claim the largest single jackpot win in US history -- $758.7 million -- and promptly quit her job of 32 years at a hospital.

Mavis Wanczyk said she played the lottery as a “pipe dream,” never believing that it would one day be possible for her to retire early from the Mercy Medical Center, where she has worked for decades.

On Thursday that dream came true.

“I’ve called up and told them I will not be coming back,” she said to laughter at a news conference hosted by the Massachusetts State Lottery.

“I’m going to go hide in my bed!” she added when asked how she planned to celebrate, wearing black-framed spectacles, a zip-up hooded black sweater over a grey lace top, necklace and shoulder-

length thick auburn hair.Wanczyk selected the

winning numbers -- including a blend of family birthdays -- and bought the ticket from a convenience store in Chicopee, a small town 100 miles (160 kilometers) west of Boston, calling it “a chance I had to take.”

“I was there just to buy it for luck,” she explained, chewing gum and grinning. Accompanied to the news conference by her mother and two sisters, she was still dazed after her monumental win.

Powerbal l ca l led Wednesday’s draw “the highest jackpot won on a single ticket and the biggest lottery prize ever awarded to one single person.”

She now has the choice of taking the jackpot as an annuity spread over 30 years or a one-off cash lump sum of $480.5 million, depending on state taxes.

“First thing, I just want to sit back and relax,” Wanczyk said.

‘I’m scared but I’ll be ok’She said she found out she had won from a colleague when they were leaving work overnight and promptly went into shock.

“I couldn’t drive anywhere, I couldn’t do anything,” she said. “So he followed me actually to make sure I was safely home.”

“Now it’s like, ‘I am a winner,’ and I’m scared, but I’ll be ok.”

Wanczyk, who has a 31-year-old daughter and 26-year-old son, said she previously been “OK” financially and had yet to work out how to spend her millions, other than paying off the car she bought last year.

She said she now wanted to be alone to “figure out what I want to do.”

While she could have remained anonymous, she said she came forward so quickly

because she wanted to “get it over,” hoping that everybody would leave her alone.

The $758.7 million jackpot is Powerball’s highest since a January 2016 world record of $1.6 billion, which was split between three ticket holders from California, Florida and Tennessee. Each took home $528.8 million.

A mad rush for tickets had propelled the bonanza up from an originally announced $650 million as lines formed out of shopping malls and grocery stores.

The winning numbers from Wednesday night’s draw were 6, 7, 16, 23 and 26, from five white balls, and 4 as the so-called Powerball number on a red ball.

Powerball is played in 44 states, Washington DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The draw takes place every Wednesday and Saturday nights. (AFP)

The 25-year-old actor said she had this epiphany when she was working for Democrat leader Bernie Sanders at last year’s U.S. Presidential Elections. “There was a point last year when I was working for Bernie Sanders where I thought, ‘Huh, may

be I’ll run for Congress in a couple years.’”

“And you know what? I’m not going to rule it out. Who knows? Life is big, and I’m young,” Woodley said. (TOI)

Jason George has been hired to write the script about a man named Allan(Ferrell) who manages to escape his nursing home on his 100th birthday. “My character, Allan, knows the art of being funny just by being. A friend could seem distant today, and probably won’t be communicating with you much. Don’t jump to the conclusion that your friend is upset with you. If anything, this person is probably worried about his or her job. Just be your usual friendly self, don’t push, and go about your business.

Are you picking up on some unsettling feelings from a friend who lives far away? You may wonder if there’s something wrong in this person’s life. Perhaps you’d better give your friend a call. You’ll probably find out that whatever is troubling him or her is minor and nothing that can’t be dealt with. Anyway, it will be good to catch up!

Is the stock market taking a nosedive again? Is this causing you to worry about your investments? Relax! The situation is likely temporary, and your stocks and bonds will probably regain their former value, if not surpass it. However, this isn’t a good day to make new investments or even to open a bank account. Wait a few days.Your love partner may be experiencing some minor conflicts with colleagues today, and may seem distant and preoccupied. The problem could well pass by tomorrow, but your friend isn’t likely to listen to any reassurance. Just make it clear that you’re there if needed and then do something else. Your beloved may have to come to terms with this alone.

Recent overindulgence may have you to feel a bit under the weather this morning. Avoid coffee and other stimulants. Try to sleep in if you can. Too much stress in your life certainly isn’t helping. This malaise could pass by noon, but if you’ve been doing this a lot lately, you need to ask yourself why and find a way to quit doing it.

Feelings of love for a romantic partner could be so overwhelming today you might be moved to tears. You will experience a lot of sensual passion, so an intimate evening together is definitely called for if you can arrange it. If it isn’t possible, don’t jump to the conclusion that your friend doesn’t desire you anymore. If your friend claims to be busy, it’s probably true.

Today the walls may seem to be closing in around you, and you’re anxious to get out for a while. Your significant other could want nothing more than to stay in. Don’t let this turn into a major issue. Find a compromise. Go out to dinner and then come home and watch TV. Enjoy your time together! If single, get out and mingle.

Some wonderful news may come to you today, and this could send you into such excitement that it’s difficult to concentrate on the situation at hand. This is OK for a while. Your friends and loved ones will probably understand. But at some point you need to come down to Earth! Take a walk and work off the excitement. That might be just what you need.

Money worries may plague you today. There might not be any real reason. You may just be fretting over possible troubles that could come up. This is a pointless exercise. Cross that bridge when you come to it. Take steps to avoid this contingency if you wish, but don’t waste time worrying. The stress isn’t worth it.

A friend or colleague may pay you back a small sum of money that’s owed to you. You’ll be thrilled, but you might feel a little guilty that you plan to spend it on something frivolous instead of putting it toward your bills. This isn’t worth the guilt. It isn’t that much money, and you’re entitled to a little frivolity now and then. Go for it!

Your home may seem lonely today, and love may seem to be absent. A family member, perhaps your love partner, could be away for the night, making the place seem far colder and emptier than it is. This isn’t a good night to stay home. Go out and visit a friend or go to a movie. You need to keep yourself occupied until your partner returns.

Are you preoccupied today? Something that means a lot to you could require some careful consideration so you might be quieter than usual. Loved ones may think that you’re ill, upset, or even angry. Talk to them about what’s on your mind. Let them know why you’re quiet. That should relieve their fears and they might even be able to help.

Hualien

As night falls on a square in the

village of Matai’an, young women cast critical eyes over a dancing circle of

men in embroidered skirts and feathered head dresses as part of an ancient match-making ritual.

Known as “Lovers’ Night”, it is the grand finale of the annual harvest festival in the settlement which belongs to the Amis tribe, the largest of the 16 recognised indigenous groups in Taiwan.

Near the island’s rugged east coast, the village -- also known as Fata’an, the name of a local plant, in the Amis language -- is a collection of basic, low-lying houses along meandering streets, located in a valley between two mountain ranges.

The harvest festival -- which usually runs between June and August, with each village holding it at a different time -- is the biggest and most important celebration for the Amis tribe, and in Matai’an it culminates with single women taking their pick of eligible bachelors.

The centuries-old custom is a reflection of the tribe’s matriarchal system, which sees women make key decisions including managing finances and men marry into their wives’ families.

As the singing and dancing men pick up their pace, the women move in behind their chosen love interest and tug on a multicoloured cloth bag slung on their target’s shoulder.

To spark interest, the men wiggle and flex their muscles, the most popular among them accruing a queue of interested women.

If a man reciprocates the approach, he will give his bag -- known as an “alufu” -- to the woman, marking the beginning of a courtship.

In the past, the ritual would commonly lead to marriage and even now still sparks relationships, but it is also a chance for Amis community members who are working in the cities to return and socialise.

“Lovers’ Night is to make friends,” said Cheng Ying-hsuan, 22.

Dressed in a red traditional outfit adorned with green beads and her own sequined alufu, she had returned to the village from the city of Hualien, where she now lives, an hour’s drive away.

When asked if she hoped to find a boyfriend, she laughed and said coyly: “That’s also a possibility.”

Matai’an is one of the biggest Amis settlements and is home to around 500 people -- mostly elders and children.

Time to reconnect “We like the feeling of everyone coming back together and reconnecting. For us this is the most important,” said Liao Ching-tung, 28, who lives in the capital Taipei.

Each harvest festival, hundreds who have moved away to work or study return to join in the festivities.

The indigenous community -- which remains a marginalised group in Taiwanese society -- has seen its traditional culture eroded since immigrants started arriving from China centuries ago.

Since President Tsai Ing-wen came to power in May 2016, her government has been pushing for greater indigenous rights and preservation of tribal languages and culture.

But some groups have criticised Tsai for not going far enough and have clashed with authorities over land rights policy, demanding their ancestral areas be returned.

In Matai’an, tradition is alive and kicking.

Lamen Panay, 41, who goes by her tribal name, says the matchmaking event is still meaningful to her even though she is no longer single.

She has a collection of lovers’ bags from past harvest festivals, but has since settled down with her long-term boyfriend, living with him in Taipei.

The couple are both from the village and Lamen still makes a point of picking him out during the matchmaking ritual.

“We are both usually very busy with work,” she said.

“It’s necessary to rekindle the flames.” (AFP)Members of the Amis indigenous group dancing during the

Macau

The death toll from Severe Typhoon Hato

rose to at least 16 yesterday after the storm left a trail of destruction across southern China, blacking out Macau’s mega-casinos and battering Hong Kong’s skyscrapers.

Eight died in the gambling hub of Macau, where images showed cars underwater and people swimming along streets. The enclave’s famed

mega-casinos were running on backup generators.

Macau’s leader made a public apology after his government came under fire for its delayed storm warning, while the head of the weather bureau resigned.

A man was killed by a wall that was blown down, another fell from a fourth-floor terrace and one was hit by a truck.

Danish prosecutors said yesterday they will seek

a murder charge against the self-built submarine inventor who was last seen with Swedish journalist Kim Wall before her headless torso was found floating off Denmark.

“At latest on September 5, we will try to hold him in custody on a murder charge ... after her (dismembered) body was found,” special prosecutor Jakob Buch-Jepsen said, referring to Peter Madsen.

The 46-year-old inventor has been held in formal custody since August 12 on suspicion of “negligent manslaughter”, in a case that has shocked and intrigued people around the world.

Prosecutors have until September 5 to request an extension of his custody.

Madsen, who has denied the allegations against him, has insisted Wall died in an accident on board and that he dumped the body in the water at an undefined location in Koge Bay, south of Copenhagen.“Believe me, if we

have to close down our government, we’re building Mexico wall,”

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said yesterday the

United States was committed to helping Ukraine’s military, and sanctions against Russia would remain in place until Moscow stops supporting rebels and returns Crimea.

Mattis accused Russia of seeking to “redraw international borders” by force and said a new military aid package agreed with Ukraine would help Kiev defend itself.

“Mr President, we continue to support Ukraine and remain committed to building the capacity of your armed forces,” Mattis said

after meeting Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko for talks.

He said Washington had recently approved delivery of military equipment worth $175 million (148 million euros) to Ukraine that would boost its defence capacities.

This brings total military aid to $750 million since 2015, although the issue of lethal weaponry is still under consideration, he added.

“On the defensive lethal weapons, we are actively reviewing it,” he said.

“Defensive weapons are not provocative unless you are an aggressor. And surely Ukraine is not an aggressor.”

India’s Supreme Court ruled yesterday that

citizens have a constitutional right to privacy, a landmark decision that could jeopardise a government programme holding biometric data on over a billion people.

Privacy is not explicitly mentioned in the Indian constitution and the government has argued that the country’s 1.25 billion people have no absolute right to it.

But the top court said the right to privacy was enshrined in the constitution, a ruling which civil liberties campaigners hailed as a

milestone.“The right of privacy is a

fundamental right,” the nine judges deciding the case said in a unanimous ruling.

“It is a right which protects the inner sphere of the individual from interference from both State and non-State actors and allows the individuals to make autonomous life choices.”

The Supreme Court had set up a special bench to rule on the issue after a legal challenge to the government’s Aadhaar biometric programme, which has recorded the fingerprints and iris scans of more than one billion Indians.

Prashant Bhushan, one of

the lawyers working on the Aadhaar challenge, said the ruling was a blow to the right-wing government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“It is a big jolt for the government because they argued that privacy is not a fundamental right,” he told reporters outside the court.

Aadhaar was set up as a voluntary scheme to streamline benefit payments to millions of poor people and reduce fraud.

But in recent years it has become compulsory for a growing number of services, including opening a bank account and paying taxes. (AFP)

Bangladesh police declared yesterday that rampant

piracy in the Sundarbans was a thing of the past, crediting a gun buyback scheme for reducing crime and tiger poaching in the vast mangrove forest.

Police said more than 130 pirates operating in the forested delta region had surrendered their weapons and ammunition in exchange for cash, legal aid and mobile phones since the programme began just over a

year ago.The scheme had virtually

eradicated the lawlessness once rife in the world’s largest

mangrove forest, a natural habitat for Bengal tigers, said a spokesman for the Rapid Action Battalion police unit.

Russia’s ambassador to Sudan, who was found

dead in a swimming pool at his residence, died of a heart attack, the Russian foreign ministry said yesterday. He was 62.

“Everything happened around 6:00 pm local time.

The Russian envoy was found in his residence with evidence of an acute heart attack,” spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told reporters.

Sudanese officials had announced the death of Mirgayas Shirinsky on Wednesday evening, saying that a preliminary investigation

pointed to a natural death. Shirinsky is the fourth

Russian ambassador to die on the job over the last year, including the UN envoy Vitaly Churkin and India envoy Alexander Kadakin.

The ambassador to Turkey Andrei Karlov was shot by an assailant in December 2016.

Embassy staff called an ambulance but “Shirinsky could not be saved,” Zakharova said.

He was a “great professional,” she added.

“He dedicated his life to diplomacy. We express sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Cairo

Egypt criticised a US decision to freeze $195

million in military aid on Wednesday, as a US delegation including presidential adviser Jared Kushner visited Cairo for meetings on the Middle East peace process.

The decision to withhold some financial and military aid in response to Egypt’s poor record on democracy and civil liberties came as a surprise, after President Donald Trump pledged strong tries with the key US ally after they had deteriorated under his predecessor Barack Obama.

The US delegation met Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on Wednesday, his spokesman said, after the meeting had earlier been dropped with no explanation from the minister’s schedule sent to reporters.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi also met with the delegation, his spokesman Alaa Youssef said.

The presidency and foreign ministry, in statements after the meetings, said the talks focused on efforts to boost bilateral ties and reviving Israeli-Palestinian peace talks, without mention of the aid cuts.

US military plans to install radar in Palau

Koror

The United States has announced plans to install

radar systems in Palau, a move that will increase its monitoring ability in the western Pacific region recently rocked by threats from North Korea.

In a joint statement, the US Defense Department and the Palau government said they were working to finalise the location of radar towers on the archipelago nation.

“The radar systems will provide Palau enhanced maritime law enforcement capability... while also providing the US with greater air domain awareness for

aviation safety and security,” they said.

While Palau is an independent nation, it has no military and the US is responsible for its defence under an agreement with Washington.

Under the deal, the US military has access to the islands, although it currently has no troops stationed there.

Palau is about 1,300 kilometres south-west of Guam, the US Pacific territory that Pyongyang threatened to fire missiles towards earlier this month, sparking rhetoric of “fire and fury” from President Donald Trump.

Egypt criticises US decision to cut aid

Panchkula

Tens of thousands of supporters of a

controversial Indian guru marched yesterday on a city where he is standing trial for rape, alarming state authorities who redoubled security and suspended mobile internet services.

A court at Panchkula in the northern state of Haryana is expected Friday to deliver a verdict in the case against Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, dubbed the “guru in bling” for his penchant for garish clothes and jewellery.

Indian investigators allege Singh, the charismatic spiritual head of the Dera Sacha Sauda sect, molested two female worshippers, a charge he and his supporters deny.

More than 100,000 of his supporters have thronged cities across Haryana and Punjab in a show of solidarity, prompting authorities to deploy 15,000 paramilitary officers and block internet services.

“A meeting was held today and we made a decision to suspend mobile internet and data services for the

next 72 hours,” Ram Niwas, Haryana’s additional chief secretary, told reporters.

Roads into Panchkula, where a special court will issue a judgement into the allegations stretching back to 2002, were blockaded, and three stadiums set aside as makeshift prisons in case of trouble, officials said.

But tens of thousands of Singh’s supporters were already camped out across the city, where schools and offices were closed as a precaution.

Ravi Kumar, 25, said he wanted to ensure “nothing unfair” was done to Singh,

who has featured in action movies and music videos.

“He does so much good for humanity and they still trouble him by calling him here without a reason,” Kumar said.

The self-styled “godman” urged his supporters against violence and said he would personally appear in court today.

“I have always respected the law. Even though I have a backache, still, abiding by law, I will go to court. I have full faith in God. Everyone should maintain peace,” Singh posted on Twitter yesterday. (AFP)

Japan’s military began three days of live-fire drills near

Mount Fuji yesterday, an annual exercise that comes as regional tensions have flared following a war of words between the US and North Korea.

Around 2,400 soldiers, as well as tanks, field guns and helicopters were deployed at training grounds in the foothills of the iconic mountain, about 80 kilometres (50 miles) west of Tokyo.

Airborne troops parachuted from planes, anti-aircraft cannon were fired and F2 fighter jets whizzed overhead in a display of force by one of the world’s best-equipped militaries.

The drills are meant to prepare Japan’s Self-Defence Forces to repel an attack on its remote islands.

But North Korea’s recent threat to fire missiles at the US Pacific territory of Guam and territorial disputes with China and Russia are also concerning Tokyo.

“There are various issues and uncertain factors such as China’s forceful attempt to change the status quo in the East and South China Sea areas, North Korea’s promotion of ballistic missile development and nuclear weapons and Russia’s display of its presence in the Far East,” GSDF Chief of Staff General Koji Yamazaki said in a statement.

“The severity of the security situation surrounding our country... is increasing,” he added.

Four-time Olympic champion Mo Farah ended his track career in

thrilling fashion yesterday with victory in the 5,000m at the Diamond League final in Zurich while world 100m

champion Justin Gatlin slumped

to defeat.The 34-year-

old Farah, also a six-time world champion who will now switch to road running, clocked 13min 06.05sec to defeat Paul Chelimo of the United States and Muktar Edris of Ethiopia.

Victory was particularly sweet as Edris had defeated him in

t h e

5,000m final at the world championships in London two weeks ago, ending his streak of 10 gold medals dating back to the 2011 world championships.

It was also Farah’s first career Diamond League trophy.

“I wanted to win, and it’s amazing that I have won, but it was hard work,” said Farah.

“I will miss the track, the people, my fans. I have enjoyed running in stadiums for a lot of years, but now first of all I will enjoy being with my family.”

While Farah took the applause of the Zurich crowd, it proved a night to forget for controversial American sprinter Gatlin who captured the world 100m title in London.

Gatlin, who served a four-year doping ban from 2006-2010, wasn’t jeered as he was in London, where he gatecrashed Usain Bolt’s farewell party, but was beaten into fourth place in 10.04sec with Britain’s Chijindu Ujah taking victory in 9.97sec.

Ujah, part of Britain’s 4x100m relay title-winning squad at the world

championships, finished ahead of Ivory Coast’s Ben Youssef Meite (9.97sec) with Ronnie Baker of the US completing the podium (10.01sec).

Schippers, Thompson beaten Bahamas’ Shaunae Miller-Uibo

stunned world champion Dafne Schippers and Olympic gold medallist Elaine Thompson to win the women’s 200m.

Miller-Uibo, who was only third in the event at the recent world championships in London, won in a time of 21.88sec ahead of Thompson (22.00) and Marie-Josee Ta Lou of the Ivory Coast (22.09), the silver medallist in London.

Schippers struggled home in fourth place (22.36).

It was the second shock failure of the season for Thompson, the Jamaican sprinter who captured Olympic gold in the 100m and 200m in Rio in 2016.

In the 100m at the world championships, she finished in a lowly fifth place. (AFP)

Roads into Panchkula, where a special court will issue a judgement into the allegations stretching back to 2002, were blockaded, and three stadiums set aside as makeshift prisons in case of trouble, officials said.

Marczynski claims stage 6

Sagunto, Spain

Poland’s Tomasz Marczynski claimed

stage six of the Vuelta a Espana yesterday as Chris Froome withstood a day of five categorised climbs and counter-attacks to maintain the overall race lead.

Marczynski edged out compatriot Pawel Poljanski and Spaniard Enric Mas on the line to claim the 204.4km stage from Vila Real to Sagunto in 4hrs 47mins 02secs.

Froome finished eighth, alongside most of the general classification favourites 26

seconds back.However, the Briton

extended his lead by one second to 11 seconds as Esteban Chaves leapt into second following a nightmare stage for Tejay van Garderen. The American suffered two crashes and a puncture as he lost 17 seconds on the race leaders’ group to fall to fourth overall.

A huge early breakaway group of 37 riders was kept in check by the pace set by Froome’s Team Sky teammates in the peloton.

Yet, it wasn’t until the fifth and final climb up the Puerto

del Garbi that the general classification favourites began to fight it out as Alberto Contador attacked and was followed by Froome and Van Garderen.

As Contador and Froome briefly opened up a 15-second gap on their rivals, Van Garderen suffered his first crash of the day.

The chasing group containing Vincenzo Nibali, Fabio Aru and Chaves neutralised that advantage on the descent to the finish line. Up front Marczynski, Poljanski and Mas were the only three remaining from

the breakaway and fought it out in a sprint finish for the stage win.

“I came here very motivated, I thought I could achieve something and today was the day,” said Marczynski after the biggest win of his career.

“It was a very tough stage, a big breakaway. We went up the last climb very quickly.

“I said I was going to give it my all and it went perfectly.”

The drama wasn’t over for Van Garderen as he then suffered a puncture and in his desperation to get

back to the peloton hit the ground again upon breaking as he entered a roundabout too quickly. He did at least minimise the damage to fall just 30 seconds behind Froome overall.

Ireland’s Nicholas Roche took advantage of his BMC racing teammate’s misfortune to move up to third just 13 seconds back on the four-time Tour de France winner.

Today’s seventh stage contains another three categorised climbs on the 207km from Lliria to Cuenca. (AFP)

India beat Sri Lanka by three wicketsPallekele

Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Bhuvneshwar Kumar anchored

India’s chase after a stunning batting collapse as the visitors edged past Sri Lanka by three wickets in the second one-day international yesterday.

Leg-spinner Akila Dananjaya returned career-best figures of 6-54 to make India stutter at 131-7 while chasing a Duckworth-Lewis revised target of 231 in 47 overs in Pallekele.

Dhoni, who scored 45, then put on an unbeaten 100-run stand with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who made 53, to steer the team home in 44.2 overs and take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

India lost seven wickets for 22 runs after a 109-run opening partnership between Rohit Sharma, who hit 54, and Shikhar Dhawan, who missed out on his half-century.

Dananjaya turned on the heat with his googly as he picked three crucial wickets, including skipper Virat Kohli for four in an over, to take some steam off the Indian chase.

But ice-cool Dhoni kept the chase on track with a gutsy partner at the other end in Kumar, who had gone wicketless during his spell as the team’s pace spearhead.

While Dhoni kept picking the singles and twos, Kumar was happy playing

second fiddle before unleashing his power and register his maiden ODI fifty.

Earlier Milinda Siriwardana hit a gritty 58 to lift Sri Lanka to 236-8 in 50 overs after being put into bat.

Siriwardana put on a crucial 91-run sixth-wicket stand with Chamara Kapugedara, who made 40, after the hosts were in trouble at 121-5 against a disciplined Indian attack. (AFP)

Mick to drive in Spa tribute

Spa, Belgium

Michael Schumacher’s teenage son will drive

one of his father’s cars before Sunday’s Belgium Grand Prix to mark the 25th anniversary of the seven-time world champion’s first Formula One victory.

According to the organisers, Mick Schumacher, 18, who currently races in Formula Three, will drive demonstration laps on the Spa circuit in a Benetton car before the showpiece Formula One race.

“There was no hint of a doubt in my mind that I wanted to do this,”

said Schumacher Jnr in a statement. It will mark the 25th anniversary of his father’s first victory in Formula One, at Spa, before he went on to win 90 more races in an illustrious career.

Michael Schumacher, 48, has not been seen in public since suffering serious head injuries in a skiing accident in 2013.

After two world titles with Benetton in 1994 and 1995, the German won five in a row with Ferrari from 2000 to 2004, then retired in 2006 before making a comeback with Mercedes, but could not repeat his earlier success. (AFP)

Cristiano Ronaldo was named UEFA Player of

the Season for 2016-2017 yesterday after a campaign which saw the Portuguese superstar help Real Madrid to the La Liga

and Champions League double.

It was the third time that Ronaldo had won the award which was presented on the sidelines of the Champions League group stage draw.

His great rival Lionel

Messi has won the prize on two

occasions and could pave the way for him to

capture a fifth Ballon d’Or title.“There are the same goals every

year, to meet the same challenges, win everything if possible, qualify for the World Cup with my national team,” said Ronaldo.

“This trophy will give me the motivation to keep working hard, never to give up. I am blessed and delighted to be with Real

Madrid.”Ronaldo won the UEFA award

in 2013-2014 and 2015-2016 and in the Champions League last season, where Real defeated Juventus 4-1 in the final, he finished as top scorer with 12 goals.

Ronaldo, who finished top scorer in last season’s UEFA Champions League with 12 goals, including two in the final against Juventus in Cardiff, received 482 points in the poll, with Messi (141 votes) and Buffon (109 votes) finishing second and third respectively.

The gifted front-runner has enjoyed a remarkable goalscoring

career, finding the net 530 times in 721 matches overall. He has scored 407 goals in 396 appearances for Madrid – including 90 goals in 88 UEFA Champions League outings. His 15 goals in 52 Champions League appearances for United mean that he is the overall top scorer in Champions League history. He has top-scored in the competition, either jointly or outright, a record six times – including for a record five consecutive campaigns.

Ronaldo has also netted 75 times in 143 appearances for Portugal, and was an inspirational figure in the team. (AFP)
