English is the principal language of both the United States and Canada, but many people in both countries speak other languages. Some people

think that new immigrants should be strongly encouraged to learn English instead of relying on the language of their homeland. Others think that immigrants should be encouraged to keep on speaking their native languages and that printed matter and other materials distributed by the Canadian and United States governments should be provided in many languages.
