Lesson 27: Short Essay #1

Shaving Cream

As you drive along Becker Road in Spafford, you'll see

them. A series of little red wooden signs with white

lettering on them that say:

Within this vale

Of toil and sin

Your head grows bald

But not your chin

Burma-Shave

If you were born after 1955, you're probably too young

to remember either Burma-Shave or the signs that

dotted the American landscape for almost 40 years. But

from 1925 until 1963 this brand of shaving cream was

advertised by using roadside signs like these:

The bearded lady

Tried a jar

Now she's a famousMovie star

Burma-Shave

Each set of signs ended with the name of the sponsor,

which of course was Burma-Shave. But by the mid 1940s

the signs were so well known that this set went up:

Boy, was this ever true!

In the Beginning

The year was 1925 and the Odell family's Burma-Vita

company had just come out with a new product; a pre-

mixed, brushless shaving cream. This may not seem like

such a big deal to those of you who are used to seeing

shelves of products like Barbasol and Edge at Price

Chopper, but back in 1925 this really was something.

Back then, when a guy shaved, he had to make his own

lather with a bar of soap, a shaving brush, and ashaving mug. As if that wasn't messy enough to begin

with, the brush often sat around damp in the bathroom

and would begin to smell. A shaving cream that came

already mixed up in a jar, and that you could just

spread on with your hands, was definitely a good idea.

The Odells had a great product, but sales were slow

because no one knew their product even existed, and

the company was in danger of going under. In

desperation, Allan Odell put up a set of signs along

the road to Albert Lea that said:

Shave the modern way

Fine for the skin

Druggists have it

Burma-Shave

While this set of signs didn't exactly have the

rhyming pattern and snappy wit that the later ones

would, it did the job. People heard about the product,

started buying it, and came back for more. At six

million jars a year, the Odells were on a roll.

Later on they'd put up this set of signs:

Shaving brush

All damp and hairy

I've traded you for

Sanitary

Burma-Shave

Everyone Loves Burma-Shave

Well if not the product itself, they definitely loved

the signs. They had become a major part of American

popular culture.

Long before there were Volkswagen Beetles for kids to

play "Punchbug" with, families were scouting the roads

for the next set of Burma-Shave signs. Sometimes

they'd even assign one kid the job of looking out the

rear window for signs meant for the other side of the

road. The result was often something like:

Burma Shave

Go Homeo

If You won't shave

To Romeo

Said Juliet

As the Allies invaded Europe in World War II, Burma-

Shave signs went with them. They were often planted

along the way by the advance troops in order to cheer

up those who came after, and to remind them of home.

One puzzled set of sailors on a Navy training ship

steaming through the Bering Sea found a set strung

along a large ice floe written in Russian. These were

the result of a practical joke by the helicopter crew

that had flown on ahead of them.

And people loved the Burma-Shave signs so much that

they wanted to get in on the act by entering the

yearly jingle contests. With a $100 prize if your

jingle was one of the 25 selected, thousands of people

sent in entries.

One entry that was deemed to risque for signs was:

A Trip To Mars – Part 1

Rip a fender

For a half pound jar

The Odells ran this set of signs making fun of the

popularity of coupon offers. The joke was on them,

however, when the Burma-Vita office in Minneapolis was

buried in scrap metal from the fenders people had sentin. But they made good on their offer, and gave each

person a free jar of Burma-Shave.

With the fender incident in mind, you'd think that

they would've known better than to put up a set of

signs that read:

Free, free

A trip to Mars

For 900

Empty jars

When Arliss French, of Appleton, Wisconsin, wrote them

asking where he should send the jars, the Odells wrote

back: If a trip to Mars you'd earn, remember, friend,

there's no return.

Undaunted, Mr. French sent the Odells back a letter

that said: Let's not quibble, let's not fret, gather

your forces, I'm all set.

The Odells sent out one more response: Our rockets are

ready; we ain't splitting hairs; just send us the jars

– and arrange your affairs.

They also sent someone out to Appleton. Something very

strange was going on in Wisconsin, and the Odells

wanted to know just what it was.







A Trip to Mars – Part 2

After the Burma-Shave rep got to Appleton to check

things out, he immediately called the home office with

his report. It seems that Mr. French was the manager

of the local Red Owl, and was in a unique position to

collect 900 empty Burma-Shave jars.

Frenchy, as he was known, had set up an elaborate

display in his store with flying saucers, little green

men, and a huge banner that said "Help Send Frenchy to

Mars" surrounding a huge stack of empty Burma-Shavejars. Whenever a customer bought a jar of Burma-Shave,

the contents would be scooped out into an empty ice

cream carton to be taken home, and the remaining jar

would be added to the display.

This guy was serious, and something had to be done.

Fortunately, everyone involved had a sense of humor

about things. It was also turning into a great public

relations bonanza for both Burma-Shave and Red Owl, as

newspapers and magazines across the country picked up

the story.

At first the Odells thought of sending Frenchy to

Chicago, to visit the Mars Candy factory. But then

someone from the Red Owl main office came up with a

better idea. Together they'd send Frenchy and his wife

to Mars, Germany.

An armored truck arrived in Minneapolis, carrying

Frenchy's 900 empty jars. When Frenchy himself

arrived, wearing a space suit with a big red owl on

the front, the Odells gave him a few full jars to use

during his trip.

Not only was it a big deal when they flew out of

Minneapolis, but it was an even bigger deal when they

arrived in Germany. The town made a three-day festival

of the visit, and everyone had a wonderful time.

You can rest assured that the Odells never ran that

set of signs again.







The End of the Road

The Burma-Shave signs worked well back in the days

when a fast car was going maybe 45 mph. But times

changed as roads got better and cars got faster. The

beginning of the end came in the mid 1950s. That was

when the Federal Highway Act was signed into law, and

the building of the Interstate Highway System began.

These new roads would take people off of the old

county, state, and US routes where the Burma-Shavesigns had flourished for years. And while these new

roads made it possible for people to get from place to

place much faster, trying to place Burma-Shave signs

on these roads presented a special set of problems.

While increased driving speed presented its own set of

problems, perhaps what really did in the Burma-Shave

signs was the nature of the Interstate Highways

themselves. No longer were these little roads that

passed closely by many pieces of private property on

which the Burma-Shave people could negotiate to placetheir signs. Not only did these new roads have buffer

zones that could extend the equivalent of a city block

to the left and right, but the state highway

departments often prohibited advertising signs on

their property.

Finally, in 1965, the Odells sold the company and the

decision was made to take down the signs that had

entertained American drivers for 40 years. The

"Saturday Evening Post" lamented the passing of the

beloved Burma-Shave signs with this verse:

Gone, But Not Forgotten

Even though the last official Burma-Shave signs came

down in 1965, they weren't forgotten. The Smithsonian

Institution asked for a set almost immediately after

the decision was made to take the signs off the road.

The set they got, the Odell's favorite, is the same

set of signs that can be seen along Becker Road in

Spafford.

The publication of Frank Rowesome's "The Verse by theSide of the Road" that same year, not only helped to

keep the signs in people's memories, but over the

years introduced whole new generations of people to

them. It's been continuously in print for almost as

long as the original signs were on the road. This is

the book that introduced me to Burma-Shave.

Many people have taken up collecting old signs or

making replicas. You can find them in certain

catalogs. But that's not all, when I was in first

grade I saw a set of neon signs along the New JerseyTurnpike that said something along the lines of:

Stay awake

Stay alive

Keep your speed

At 55

I now know who inspired these signs.

And references to them keep popping up. My favorite is

from the college comic strip "Eyebeam," where a set of

signs on the beach says:

Her boyfriend's face

Was gray and ashen

Hair has no place

In swimwear fashion
