The school grounds came alive once again as old friends reunited and new friends were welcomed. The school year started off with a special worship focusing on the theme ‘Inside Out’, by our new Chaplain and Student Counsellor, affectionately known to students as ‘Chappy Terry’. The ‘Inside Out’ theme will be a year long focus and underpin the teaching of our core values – Respect, Compassion, Integrity and Success. If you are a fan of Dr Seuss, you will have heard or read the following; ‘You have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. Oh.. the places you will go!’ Teachers and support staff this year will be encouraging all students to choose to embrace and develop the core values mentioned in all circumstances. Encouraging students to realise that they choose their own path in life; it’s not just an unlucky hand dealt to them. This year we have back, Miss Thompson and Mrs Terry Litcheld, School Chaplain and Student Counsellor will be joining our team. Having spent the last two weeks planning together for the new school year, I am excited about the passion and skill the two new staff are bringing to the team. As principal of the school, I am looking forward to the many blessings, challenges and positive life- long friendships that we will build as a Christian learning community. Chaplain’s ChatI’m very excited and feel very privileged to be invited to join the journey of the young people at Henderson College. As I spend recess walking through the grounds, the poten al of these beau ful young people is obvious and it dawns on me that we, the teachers, school support team, parents and families all have a role to play in helping these young people to be all that they can be. As the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child and as part of the school community, I will be walking alongside these young people through this year as their Chaplain/Student Welfare Offi cer. I will be someone who will be there to listen, to guide and encourage not only the students, but their parents and teachers as well. My offi ce is

always open and you are always welcome for a chat.Talking about cha ng ... it’s well known that as we are becoming more connected via social media and the internet, we are becoming less connected as families. One of the key causes of rela onship breakdown, in couples and families, is communica on or rather, the lack thereof. Developing healthy communica on in your family will not only strengthen your family but also provide a wonderful template for your children to work from as they grow into adults and have families of their own. Over the next few weeks we’ll start talking about … talking! In the mean me, why not set aside the phones, tablets and laptops and schedule some face-to-face family me. Laughter really is the best medicine, go do it with your kids!

HENDERSON COLLEGE PROMOTES HEALTHY EATING

It has been proven that without steady, nutritious food options health issues develop.

Youngsters can get chronic diseases such as diabetes or heart issues without a healthy diet.

These health issues can make kids less productive and increase health-care costs for parents.

We encourage you to provide less packaged and more raw foods for school lunches.

Please note that ‘sometimes foods’ such as biscuits, chocolate, chips, cakes and lollies will be

discouraged by teachers. Below are some helpful ideas
